Dear Fr iend of the SPCA of Anne Arundel County,
As the last line of defense for animals in our community we take great pride in the work we do to offer all
animals the best opportunity for a happy and meaningful life in a home dedicated to their welfare surrounded
by love and affection. We welcome animals that have been turned away, left abandoned, abused, medically
needy and those with difficult behavioral issues. I am grateful for your support in transitioning this Shelter into
a “no-kill” shelter and I am confident in saying we are accomplishing our goals.
This is not a transition that is without its obstacles. Most of our animals fly out our doors to great homes, still
others face bigger challenges and linger with us. Our challenged animals may have personalities and behaviors
that could preclude a safe existence. As we carefully decide a course of action for these animals we have a
unique and often conflicting responsibility of protecting the animal and the public. We error on the side of
caution but provide a tremendous opportunity with skilled staff, volunteers and trainers that give our animals
the best hope of a future. We have many successes that empower our efforts. This is a huge commitment by
the SPCA and would not be possible without the generous donations of our sponsors.
Through your efforts the SPCA is now widely recognized throughout the region for its great work. The
accolades mount and the community is bustling with animals that have passed through our doors. As the
doldrums and cold weather of winter fade and the blossoms of spring appear, let’s take this moment to rejoice
in our successes, be respectful of our challenges and recommit to unite in a common cause of “no animal
without a home”. As your President I could not be more grateful for your efforts and look forward to your
continued support.
Sincerely,
Kelly Brown
President, Board of Directors
P.S.
Please share this newsletter with family and friends, so we can continue to
rescue and rehabilitate animals in Anne Arundel County.

BULLETIN BOARD
Riley (Chico)
We love our Riley (Chico).
~ Beth and Ron
Simba is nearly 11 years old and a
great ambassador for the adoption
of the “mature” feline. Playful yet
mellow, mannerly, confident and
content.
Margaret Anne came to us through
your barn cat program for our horse
stable. She loves jumping from hay
bale to hay bale and sleeping in her
“cozy cat cuddler.”
She is 5 years old, a sweet natured
beauty and has become a good
friend to our otheR barn cat, Charlie.
We really want to thank all of the
staff at the SPCA and especially Raven
who was very knowledgeable and
helpful in assisting us with selecting
our newest family members.
Thank you for all the excellent work
you do!

Oreo
A couple of months ago I adopted
Oreo, a small and loveable cat.
I wanted to thank you from the
bottom of my heart for the love
and affection she has brought to my
home and family.
Thank you for everything you do.
Ben
Thanks to you, Ben has been my
dearest companion for 6 years. When
people ask “who saved whom?” I
know what they mean! Thank you
for helping us find each other and for
all that you do for the animals.
going for walks in the park. She hates
the rain. Nellie is an extremely loyal
and is a good dog. Thanks again for
allowing me to adopt her.
~ Steve C.
Herbie
Here is my little cross-eyed Herbie.
He enjoys a mad dash after his toy
mouse on a string following dinner!
~Ursula V.
Ziggy
Ziggy says she misses all of her
friends at the SPCA. She knows what
you did for her to make her healthy
enough for adoption. You saved her
life. We cannot thank you enough.

Simba and Margaret Anne
I just wanted to send an update on
how well our recently adopted cats
Simba and Margaret Anne (formerly
Angel) are doing. Simba has adjusted
very well to his new home. He is
really flourishing in his new routine.

Little Nellie Kellie (Kaori)
I adopted Little Nellie Kellie (Kaori)
on September 11, 2009. She is a
wonderful dog who loves people and
Adopt a Friend
for life!
Deacon
e adopted Deacon at 8 months old in September 2006. We could not
W
believe our wonderful fortune of finding our guy there, as who in their
right mind would give up a Dobie? We soon found that his
energy level was only exceeded by his intelligence level. He
blossomed into the smartest, most loving guy you can imagine.
A year after we adopted Deacon, my husband, Mark was
diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis and decided on early
retirement from his job. This is where the story gets even
better. At that point, Deacon was acclimated pretty well we
thought. But, once Mark retired and spent his days at home,
Deacon flourished. Over the last 7 years, he has been Mark’s
constant companion. He has literally helped to re-do our
home, installing hardwood floors, refurbishing a bath, all
while being at the elbow of Mark and ready to lend a paw
or at least generate a heartfelt belly laugh with his attempts
to help or to inject comic relief when something was
challenging. His timing was uncanny in offering up his favorite
“baby” (toy) to Mark or anyone who was showing stress.
Sadly, we lost our Deacon to cancer. We asked him to be free
to be Deacon again on the other side.
Thank you, again, for all that you do, and for giving our
family the opportunity to have had this
wonderful guy in our lives!
~ Shawn B.
Kitty Girl
ur new family member is our SPCA cat, Kitty Girl. She has soft sensitive eyes
O
and with a tilt of her head she shows curiosity and interest in everything
around her. She purrs and lets us know that she is happy with us as her new
family. She is so soft that you may think that she is a gold teddy bear. She loves
lying in the windows in the sunlight. She watches the birds from morning until
night and enjoys their songs and bright colors. She sleeps in the master bedroom
at the foot of our double bed. Her blanket is soft and fluffy and she curls up
and is asleep at the same time we go to bed. She loves her new toys, especially
her sticks with fluffy toys attached. She makes us feel younger and we have
never laughed so much to watch her play. The SPCA staff has helped us pick
the perfect addition to our family. We feel lucky to have found such a gentle
soul, so full of wisdom, very intelligent, a quick learner, and full of joy and fun.
We THANK you SPCA Annapolis for this greatest gift, “our Kitty Girl”.

Olive (Venus)
e adopted Venus (renamed as Olive) a couple weeks ago and just wanted to
send an update on how she is doing. She’s been such a joy to have. She loves
attention and follows us around all the time. She even greets us at the door when
we come home from work! She loves to have her tummy rubbed and purrs all the
time. I think the only thing she loves more than attention is food! She wants to eat,
eat, eat all day! It’s hard to not feed her treats and snacks all day :) We play with
her and get her to run around to work off some of that food. She LOVES to chase
the laser pointer. She’s such a wonderful cat and we can’t believe how lucky we are.
Thank you so much!

Fos“Kitten
Season” ...
... as most shelters call it, is when most kittens are born. Unlike dogs, which breed year-round, cats generally
reproduce in spring and summer. However, in warmer weather, kitten season can be year round. Last year,
we had 118 kittens in foster care and expect to have more
this year.
Our Foster Program relies on volunteer fosters and donations
to care for the youngest, most vulnerable cats. Items such as
bottles, kitten formula, blankets, and beds help our foster
parents prepare for caring for a litter of kittens.
The best way to help alleviate the influx of kittens is to spay
and neuter your cat. To schedule an appointment to spay/
neuter for your pet , contact the SPCA’s Spay & Neuter Clinic
at 410-268-4388 x123 or at Clinic@aacspca.org
Have you thought about fostering with the SPCA?
Fostering is a rewarding and enriching experience, and a great volunteer project for families or individuals who love
animals but cannot commit to having a full time pet. To learn more on how you can help, please contact our Foster
Coordinator at Foster@aacspca.org
SPCA Pet Food Bank Program
Families suffering financial hardships are
sometimes faced with the prospects of
giving up their beloved dogs or cats because
their care is too costly. The Pet Food Bank
is a program aimed at assisting those who
need support in providing food and supplies
for their pets. Last year, the Pet Food Bank was
proud to serve 85 families. Those clients were
offered free nutritious food, benefitting both the
pets that had the opportunity to stay in loving
and familiar homes as well as providing peace
of mind for the families that love them. Do you
know anyone who may benefit from this program?
Please contact Rita Melvin at rita.melvin@aacspca.

Marley N. adores cats and wanted
to make the lives of the cats at
the SPCA more comfortable. She
visited our shelter, and during her
tour saw that one of our cat areas
needed sprucing up. The room,
while clean and comfortable,
could use some work! So Marley
undertook a fundraising project
to raise money to purchase paint
and other supplies to make the
cat area beautiful. As you can see,
the cats are very happy with the
results. Marley, we thank you!

The Pasadena Big Vanilla Athletic
Club’s Angel Tree was, once again, a
huge success. Donors bought a gift,
then pulled an adoptable angel from
the tree, and attached the angel to
their gift. There was only one angel left

Farewell beloved friend
It is with a heavy heart that we had to say
goodbye to our beloved office cat, Tic Tac.
Years ago, Tic Tac sneaked her way into
the SPCA and refused to leave...declaring
herself the official office cat. Depending
on whom you ask, Tic Tac was anywhere
from 15-20 years old. She came to us as
a stray, claimed her spot in the office, and
there she stayed. We will greatly miss our
beautiful, fluffy friend, but will always
remember the wonderful times we had
with her over the years.
Sponsor an animal at our shelter through our
Guardian Angel Program!
For a minimum donation of $50,
you can sponsor an animal for yourself or as a gift in honor or memory of a friend or loved one.
Simply:
• Choose an adoptable animal (cat, dog, kitten, puppy, or other) or let us choose for you!
• Provide us with your name and the gift recipient’s name and address (if applicable).
• With each sponsorship, the recipient will receive a personalized SPCA of Anne Arundel County
Guardian Angel Certificate with a picture of the sponsored animal.
Your generous contribution will go towards shelter, bedding, food, veterinary care costs, toys, and treats
for that specific animal. Additionally, you will receive the satisfaction of knowing that specific animal will
live a good life because of your kind sponsorship.
Gift sponsorships can be purchased by mail, phone, or in person at the SPCA of Anne Arundel County. For
more information, please call Rita Melvin Development & Programs Manager at 410-268-4388 x121
Make a positive impact in the lives of the animals in our care!
Hearts & Hounds
Dare to C.A.R.E & SPCA of Anne Arundel County is
pleased to announce that over $68,000 was raised at
their New Year’s Eve Hearts & Hounds Gala. The Gala
was held at the Westin Annapolis on Wednesday,
December 31st. Over 200 guests rang in the New
Year while enjoying dinner, dancing to the music by
Highway Star, memorable photo booth, a raffle, and a
silent auction. The funds raised will support life-saving
programs that educate, increase awareness, and build
communities for better health
Dare to C.A.R.E. & SPCA of Anne Arundel County
gratefully acknowledges and thanks its 2014 Hearts &
Hounds Sponsors and community supporters: Bright
Key, Inc., Verizon, Graul’s Market, Medstar, Spoiled
Rotten Dogs, Anne Arundel Medical Center, WRNR,
Medtronic, and its auction donors and attendees for
their generous support.
