Make Wise Energy-Saving Choices
Are you interested in investing wisely in your future or in the future of the
planet? The management of your monthly electric bill can certainly be considered a wise investment. It could be a simple investment to help monitor your
daily electric usage, a larger investment in technology to increase the value
of your home, or even a personal investment to lower your carbon footprint
(the amount of carbon dioxide released into the air from combustion of fossil
fuels, such as gasoline). For whatever reason, you are investing to lower your
energy use, and the first step to a successful investment is to define your
goals and objectives.
Different technologies can provide varying results in reaching your goals,
and some technologies may not be viable in Rutherford EMC’s service area.
For some members, solar or photovoltaic (PV) generation (technology that
produces electric power directly from sunlight) may be the best choice. Or
it could be just a simple change to LED (light emitting diode) lighting, a
properly installed programmable thermostat or home energy monitor may be
the best option. A combination of any or all of these technologies may even
be best to help meet your personal goals.
Rutherford EMC does not sell or recommend any specific energy-saving
technology. As best we can, we will recommend the technology needed to
meet your projected goal. Two of the seven principles that govern cooperatives include education-training and information, and concern for community. Here at Rutherford EMC, we strongly believe in providing you with both.
We spend many hours reading, listening and learning about cutting edge programs so that we can inform you with confidence. We are here for you! As you
start determining how to invest wisely in your energy future, make Rutherford
EMC your first contact and a partner throughout your journey.
— Thomas M. Haire, P.E., is a system engineer for Rutherford EMC.
Meter Tampering Costs Everyone!
Breaking a meter seal, opening a meter base, removing a meter or altering
an entrance cable in any manner is “meter tampering.” Meter tampering is
extremely dangerous and can result in electrical shock or even death. It is
also illegal, punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.
Not Worth the Risk...
• It is dangerous.
• It is stealing from fellow co-op members.
• It risks the lives of your neighbors, our co-op workers and others.
• It can cause serious injury or death from electrocution, explosion or fire.
Everyone Pays
Electric use that goes unbilled and/or unpaid increases the cost of electricity for all paying members. If you suspect meter tampering in your area,
please contact Rutherford EMC immediately at 828-245-1621 or 1-800-5210920 to report it. All information can be given anonymously.
North Carolina law specifically prohibits altering, tampering with or bypassing electric meters.
If meter tampering is proven, Rutherford EMC does prosecute.

Co-ops and a Culture of Safety
His rubber gloves have been checked, his harness is secure, his mind and
body are nourished, and his comrades stand below. A lineman begins his
climb, inching farther from the ground and closer to the power line above
while the wind whirls. He’s confident in his training and in his experience,
but the dangers of the job are always in his mind.
The U.S. Department of Labor ranks electric line work as one of our country’s most dangerous jobs, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be safe. Safety has
been a fundamental part of Rutherford EMC’s culture for the last 79 years.
It’s something we expect from our employees whether they’re in the field
working to maintain the lines and equipment that deliver electricity to your
home, or they’re in the warehouse or even in the office. It’s a part of who we
are.
As members of Rutherford EMC, you are a part of our cooperative family,
and we want safety to be a part of who you are, too. May is National Electrical Safety Month, and it’s a good opportunity for all of us to reconnect with
simple practices that will help keep our homes and families free from common and often-overlooked electrical hazards.
Inside the Home:
• Inspect electrical cords often for broken connectors or fraying. Throw away
any worn cords to eliminate the possibility of shock, short circuit or fire.
• Don’t overload power outlets.
• The wattage of the bulbs you use in your home should match the wattage
indicated on the light fixture. Overheated fixtures can lead to a fire.
• When trying to unplug something from an outlet, pull on the plug, not the
cord.
24 MAY 2016 Rutherford EMC Carolina Country
• Keep in mind that turned off appliances are still connected to electricity until they are unplugged. To clean or repair these appliances always
unplug them first.
• Use extension cords only for short-term purposes, and make sure the cord
is adequately suited for the amount of electricity it will be transferring.
• Turn off and unplug all portable electrical appliances, like hairdryers,
irons and shavers, when you’re finished using them.
• Be familiar with the location of your breaker box and make sure the
switches are clearly labeled so you can shut off electricity quickly in the
event of an emergency.
Outside the Home:
• If there is a downed power line nearby, leave the area immediately and
notify our office or call 911. If others are around, let them know that they
need to stay away.
• “Call Before You Dig.” Dial 811 before starting a digging project, and
workers will be sent to your home to mark utility lines in your yard. This
service is free, and it has the potential to save your life.
• Never use electrical equipment near any wet areas, such as pools or ponds.
These tips may seem basic, but they are important. Please participate
in our culture of safety by recognizing May as National Electrical Safety
Month. Take a few moments to identify, understand and correct the potential electrical hazards in your home, and as always, please visit our website
at www.remc.com for more safety and energy information.
