ANNUAL REPORT 2012/2013 NORTHAMPTON.EDU IN MORE WAYS THAN ONE … “I’m impressed by how everyone I meet has a ‘students-first’ mindset.” “Everyone works together to get the job done.” “The employees are highly competent. Lots of smart and interesting folks here.” faculty and staff reflect on many aspects of working at NCC with observations like: “The work environment is one in which everyone is encouraged to bring their ideas to the table.” NUMBER ONE … … in best workplace NCC faculty and staff started celebrating when The Morning Call reported that Northampton was named one of 30 “Top Workplaces in the Lehigh Valley” based on a survey conducted by the national research firm WorkplaceDynamics. When the final survey results were tabulated and announced, Northampton emerged not just in the top 30, but as No. 1 among large employers. Faculty and staff rated NCC above regional and national norms in almost every category. They gave the college the highest marks in the following areas: 1) going in the right direction, 2) effective leadership and 3) operating by strong values and ethics. President Mark Erickson earned the highest ranking among leaders of workplaces with 500 plus employees. The family atmosphere was in evidence when faculty and staff at NCC Main and Monroe campuses and at the Fowler Family Southside Center gathered to celebrate NCC’s ranking as a top employer. And then it was back to serving students, all working together toward that common goal. Note: Two of the other top 30 workplaces are also led by NCC graduates: David Shaffer ’77 is co-CEO of Just Born and William Leiner ’80 and ’93 is director of New Vitae, Inc. “NCC has a family atmosphere.” NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 /1/ … in helping students stay in college Northampton Community College became one of seven community colleges across the nation participating in a pilot project to increase the number of students who earn post-secondary credentials. The Benefits Access for College Completion program is a three-year, $4.84 million initiative funded by the Ford Foundation, the Kresge Foundation, Lumina Foundation and the Open Society Foundations. The purpose is to help low-income students receive coordinated income support so they can stay in school longer and complete their studies more quickly, then move into jobs earning familysustaining wages. According to the College board, the average full-time community college student had more than $6,000 in unmet need during the 2011-12 school year. The result is that 66 percent of young community college students work more than 20 hours per week to help pay for school, home and family obligations. About 58 percent attend college part time to accommodate their work. Among the initiatives of the program is integrating existing online benefitsscreening tools into on-campus activities and informing students about publicly available support through existing meetings with college advisors. … … in volleyball with a perfect season With their first-ever fully recruited group, the Spartans finished their regular season with a perfect 19-0 record and went on to claim the Region XIX and EPAC championships. Led by EPAC Coach of the Year Adrian Yaguez, the team’s season ended with 22 wins and one loss, but not before Kelly Yagerhofer became NCC’s first-ever Region XIX Player of the Year and NCC broke into the NJCAA national top 10 rankings at No. 9. in Pa. computer networking competition NCC student Michael Schoenagel earned the No. 1 position in a statewide computer networking competition. Two other NCC students, Timothy Clegg and Matthew Glenn Mitchell, came in third and sixth, respectively, in the CISCO Networking Academy’s NETRIDERS Competition. This was the second year in a row that Northampton had a student finish in the top two in Pennsylvania, said Kevin Manna, associate professor of computer science at Northampton Community College. In the competition, students demonstrate their networking and information technology skills through a series of online exams and simulation activities designed to enhance classroom learning and to encourage students to further their career development in information technology. NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 /3/ NUMBER 1 … … in national run for women’s basketball The men’s basketball team claimed its inaugural EPAC championship in February and finished the regular season at 20-9 overall, climbing to No. 5 in the NJCAA national poll and ending as a Region XIX runner-up. The Lady Spartans, who were ranked No. 1 in the country for six consecutive weeks, finished the season at 24-2. Sophomore Tiara Aziz finished her career with 908 points. Aziz was named the EPAC Player of the Year and Region XIX Player of the Year and was honored in May 2013 by having her jersey hung within the Ring of Honor at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. editor PAUL JOLY art director TRACI ANFUSO-YOUNG ‘87 production coordinator MARIANNE ATHERTON proofreader KELLY LUTTERSCHMIDT contributing photographers DOUGLAS BENEDICT RANDY MONCEAUX JOHN STERLING RUTH COLIN SCHWAGER BRIAN SHAUD PHILIP STEIN HUB WILLSON … president DR. PALMER ‘77 publisher NORTHAMPTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE FOUNDATION 3835 GREEN POND ROAD BETHLEHEM, PA 18020 Both transition and continuity characterized the 2012-13 year. It was a year of transition as we thanked and honored Dr. Arthur Scott for his impressive accomplishments as NCC’s third president and as I began my term as his successor. It also was a year of continuity and progress as we moved forward with some ambitious ongoing projects: construction of the Monroe Campus, the College’s “We the People” NEH grant programming and many initiatives in academic program development, technology and student service. Some of these initiatives and developments are represented in the pages of this annual report that follow. In October we embarked on an important journey to identify the areas of strategic focus that will be the most critical over the next three years as we build on the College’s extraordinary success to serve students and this community even better. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our partners in this mission of service: our community partners, our faculty, staff and, of course, our enthusiastic students themselves. You are the ones who make our work so meaningful; you challenge and inspire us to rise to new heights each day. Erickson began his presidency on July 1 after spending the past seven years as president of Wittenberg. Dr. Erickson’s inauguration ceremony was the highlight of a week of events to celebrate Northampton Community College’s 45th anniversary, activities that included the President’s Tennis Challenge, Official 45th Anniversary Celebration for Students, Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Alumni Awards Mixer and the Community Fabric Awards. Five hundred guests were on hand for the inauguration consisting of students, faculty, staff, delegates from other colleges and universities, local business leaders and politicians, and community members. The Liberty High School Grenadier Fanfare Team and Pipes and Drums added excitement as well as pomp and circumstance to the proceedings as they accompanied the processional and recessional. NCC’s community chorus performed the national anthem before Dr. Charles Rinehimer, professor of biology and master of ceremonies, began the program. Robert Fehnel, vice chairman of the NCC Board of Trustees, welcomed the audience. Beloved third president Dr. Arthur Scott brought well wishes from the first NCC president, Dr. Richard Richardson, and the second, Dr. Robert Kopecek, who was too ill to attend and died earlier this year. Dr. Scott then offered his own congratulations, saying, “I was delighted when you were chosen to be the next president of Northampton. Delighted because I know of your values, I know how you have lived your life, a life filled with acts of kindness and care for others.” Karl Stackhouse, chairman of the NCC Board of Trustees, then swore in Erickson as the fourth president of NCC. After sharing how honored, humbled and excited he was to be selected as NCC’s fourth president, Dr. Erickson focused on the opportunity that lies ahead for the College in his inaugural address. Higher education is facing declining public resources, “reducing the state’s share of the budget and the school district’s ability to support the College at the very time when more students than ever find themselves unable to afford tuition because they or family members are out of work. This perfect storm could result in more students being excluded from higher education than at any time in recent history. We simply cannot let that happen. In fact, part of what brought me here was my firm belief that the most innovative, exciting and important work of the next decade will happen at places like Northampton,” he said. Dr. Erickson described his goal of seeing NCC as nothing less than the finest community college in the country, not for glory or ego, but “because it will ensure we are making the greatest difference in this community and the lives of our students.” He said he plans to build on the strong foundation put in place by Scott, Kopecek and Richardson to achieve this dream. “Faced with a changing and challenging landscape, various colleges will choose to navigate these times differently. Some will hunker down like a driver in heavy traffic putting on the brakes,” Erickson said. “But others like us will make tough decisions, go further with less fuel and invest strategically, finding new routes in the face of traffic jams and passing others by.” Veteran Students Given High Priority For recently discharged veterans, the transition from the military’s highly structured and disciplined style to the more independent atmosphere of a college can be difficult. Many also are balancing school, work and family life. During the past year the College began an emphasis on identifying and assisting veteran students. A new veterans information website at northampton.edu/veterans was created. Special military veterans orientation sessions were offered, and the registration and financial aid process was simplified for veterans. The Band of Brothers club has become increasingly active on campus, connecting veterans with similar backgrounds and experiences and promoting goodwill within the community. The club placed and dedicated a memorial to NCC veterans in the Susan K. Kubik Tribute Garden. NCC is offering programs about veterans and for veterans with the 2013-14 humanities theme: Off to War and Coming Home: Historical Perspectives on Military Veterans During and After Their Service, 1946-Present. Off to War and Coming Home will be a multidisciplinary exploration of the history of American war veterans during their service and upon reentry to civilian life, with two events in the fall giving veterans an opportunity to tell their stories to the campus and the community, as well as a special Veterans Day observance event. NCC is a Service members Opportunity College (SOC) that functions in cooperation with the Department of Defense (DoD) and military services, including the National Guard and the Coast Guard, to help meet the voluntary higher education needs of service members. For veterans returning to civilian life to begin or continue study, civilian SOC Consortium institutions provide appropriate evaluation of their training, experience and prior study as well as other services similar to those afforded service members. / 10 / NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 “WE THE PEOPLE” Year 2: The American Presidency Continuing programming and building on a multi-year National Endowment for the Humanities grant, the focus in the second year broadened from Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War to the American Presidency. The NEH grant is among the largest the organization has ever made to a community college. It earned NCC a “We the People” designation, placing it among a selective group of projects associated with an NEH initiative aimed at strengthening the teaching, study and understanding of American history and culture. The first year, the NEH challenge grant enabled NCC to lead a yearlong discussion of “The Meaning of Freedom: 1865 to Today” series, inspired by the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, probing the progress that we have made as a country and the goals of nationhood to which we still aspire. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and author Doris Kearns Goodwin gave the keynote address for “The Meaning of Freedom.” Events for the American Presidency year included: George Washington: The Forging of a Nation. Washington was portrayed by Dean Malissa, the official historical portrayer of Washington for Mount Vernon. ❚ A showing of Thomas Jefferson, the PBS film by Ken Burns. ❚ John Quincy Adams. Dr. Brian Alnutt gave a presentation on our sixth president, who led the country from 1824 to 1828. ❚ A showing of the PBS film, Andrew Jackson, Good, Evil and the Presidency. ❚ A debate, Federal Government: A Strong Vision or Limited Power? ❚ Michael Beschloss discussed his book Presidential Courage. ❚ The American Presidents Photo Exhibit: Associated Press photographs of U.S. presidents. ❚ Book discussion led by Dr. Brian Alnutt, Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris. ❚ Theodore Roosevelt as portrayed by Joseph Wiegand. ❚ Film clips & discussion: Gabriel over the White House. ❚ NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 / 11 / Leadership Lehigh Valley Merges Dental Center Opens The College’s new dental center opened in Southside Bethlehem with a mission to provide low-cost care to thousands of area residents who do not have access to dental health services. In 20 immaculate stations staffed by dental hygiene students, patients can have their teeth cleaned and scaled, obtain sealants and fluoride treatments, and get screened for blood pressure, oral cancer, tooth decay and gum disease for $25 per visit. If more extensive care is needed, including fillings, dentures, crowns, veneers, implants, root canals, extractions or therapies for teeth grinding, snoring and sleep apnea, dental residents from St. Luke’s University Health Network are partnering to provide treatment. “This is truly a win, win, win situation,” said NCC President Dr. Mark Erickson. Dr. Bonnie Coyle, St. Luke’s community health director, said, “Look how far we have come.” When the first community health assessment identified dental health as the No. 1 priority back in the mid1990s, Coyle and Terry Sigal-Greene, then director of NCC’s dental hygiene program, came up with the idea of bringing children from two Bethlehem elementary schools to NCC for sealants to prevent decay. The dental facilities at the Fowler Family Southside Center bring services previously provided at NCC’s clinic in Bethlehem Township and St. Luke’s Union Station together under one roof in a location easily accessible by public transportation. Dr. Arnold Cook, who rallied dentists to raise money to start a dental hygiene program at NCC in 1969, called the new clinic “amazing” and the people involved “phenomenal.” / 12 / NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 In June 2013 the Leadership Lehigh Valley (LLV) program was merged with NCC’s Leadership and Executive Development initiative under the College’s Center for Business and Industry. “We began evaluating our model in late 2012 to determine how we could sustain the organization while expanding the breadth of services available to class members and alumni,” said Michael Drabenstott, president of LLV’s board of directors. “Northampton Community College’s unwavering support of the program since its inception and its highly regarded leadership development programs are an ideal fit to perpetuate and develop the program.” The 10-month LLV program introduces up to 35 students each year to societal issues such as education, healthcare, human services, the judicial system, economic development and the arts. They attend presentations and panel discussions from current community leaders and conduct site visits to see firsthand how the region operates. Upon graduation, they commit to a three-year term on a not-for-profit board, though nearly all graduates continue to serve on boards for the decades that follow. Community Service Honor Roll For the seventh consecutive year, Northampton Community College was named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. The designation recognizes higher education institutions that reflect the values of exemplary community service and achieve meaningful outcomes in their communities. NCC achieved honor roll status based on a wide variety of campus/community partnerships. In the past year close to 600 Northampton Community College students participated in service learning projects, contributing the equivalent of $129,214 in support of a variety of civic projects. If volunteer work done by clubs and individual students were included, the numbers would be significantly higher. Monroe Campus Rises in the Poconos It was a year of site preparation followed by rapidly rising construction on the 72-acre new Monroe Campus in Pocono Township. The campus, scheduled to open in 2014, will include science and computer labs, meeting rooms, art studios and galleries, a state-ofthe-art library, child care center, food court, student activity areas, faculty and staff offices, service areas and athletic fields, among other amenities. It will accommodate 5,000 students and double the amount of degree and certificate programs available, as well as provide space for cultural and community events. The new campus — with its footprint composed of three modern buildings — is being constructed with materials and technologies with the lowest environmental impact, following LEED (U.S. Green Building Council) Silver standards. It will have energyefficient lighting and use a geothermal heating and cooling system. Students enrolling at the original Monroe Campus this fall and completing their studies in two years are expected to become the first class to graduate from the new Monroe Campus. NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 / 13 / RICH IN CULTURE & EXPOSURE STUDENTS DIG INTO THE NCC EXPERIENCE Esther Bauer talked about her experiences as a Holocaust survivor on March 5 at Northampton Community College. She survived three concentration camps, including Auschwitz, and nine months of forced labor in a German aircraft factory during World War II. Bauer pleaded with the student audience, “You have to see to it this never happens again. You are the future.” Far left: A showcase of Flamenco and Mexican dance, featuring performers from the Alborada Spanish, was sponsored by the NCC Hispanic Caucus, the College Life Committee and the NCC Dance Department. The Deja Brew Coffee House, the annual night of coffee, music and friends, drew a large crowd at NCC Monroe. The acoustic duo SideArm, performing in an open mic atmosphere, encouraged audience members to perform with them. Sense and Perception Student Media Art Exhibition: Through the use of shadow play, lights, mirrors and complex mathematical equations, Northampton Community College artists created paintings and sculptures. A cold day didn’t stop Spartan Fest. Students gathered in the Student Life Zone to open the start of spring semester. They warmed up by dancing, sampling international foods, hula-hooping and participating in a hot wingeating contest. Left: Pulitzer-Prize winning play Angels in America was staged by NCC Theatre students as one of several productions in the College’s program schedule for the year. Quadfest, an annual welcome back party held in August, saw record-breaking crowds. Students, staff and faculty came out on a beautiful day to eat and browse more than 40 club and 30 community tables. President Erickson joined in on the fun. NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 / 17 / Students took the knowledge they learned in their architecture and design programs and applied it to a real-world project as part of the capstone class Community Design Studio. Their plans for the South Side Bethlehem neighborhood known as the Eastern Gateway were unveiled on April 24 at an open house. Live entertainment, food, games and a synchronized color toss left some vivid memories at this Color Blast event hosted by the Hospitality Management Club. International Week on Main Campus featured exhibits representing NCC’s multicultural and diverse student body. The event culminated with a party where students enjoyed food, dance and a flag celebration in Lipkin Theatre. Far right: The high caliber of competition in the National Junior College Athletic Association makes every game exciting for spectators and players alike. / 18 / NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 Monroe Campus students enjoyed ethnic food, music and traditions from around the world at the student-organized D’Versapalooza. The International Student Organization held a fashion show featuring international students dressed in traditional clothing, while attedees enjoyed music and food from around the world. Earth Day: Student clubs and organizations came out into the sunshine on Earth Day to give demonstrations and recruit new members. Sister Simone Campbell from NETWORK, a national social justice lobby group, spoke on campus about income inequality and her quest for a fair federal budget that includes the needs of the 100 percent in the United States today. She is a religious leader, attorney and poet with extensive experience in public policy and advocacy for systemic change. / 20 / NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 Right: The annual holiday concert performed by Northampton Community College's community chorus is always a wonderful way to enjoy the season. This year's concert was extra special. The monetary proceeds from admission were donated to an NCC employee and chorus member who was recovering from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. We have much to celebrate! After completing a successful campaign last year, we are building a state-of-the-art campus in Monroe to be completed next year. We raised a record number of dollars from a record number of donors compared to the past five years. We were able to complete a $1.6 million campaign to match the $800,000 National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Challenge Grant, creating a $2.4 million endowment to support the humanities. In April we welcomed Michael Beschloss, the nation’s leading presidential historian, as the second keynote speaker for the NEH lecture series. Student success is the College’s No. 1 priority, and the Foundation plays a large role in providing scholarship support to students in need. More than $583,000 in scholarships as awarded to 493 students this year, securing our No. 1 spot as the largest, private scholarship program at any community college in the Commonwealth. In partnership with Sands Bethlehem, we once again celebrated the success of the Lehigh Valley Food & Wine Festival, hosting two festivals in one year. The festival has evolved into a three-day event and netted almost $350,000 this year, exceeding our goal. To date the festival has netted almost $700,000 for the College — an astounding amount in just four years. Foundation Board members Bob DeSalvio and Mike Molewski are co-chairs for this event and have done an exceptional job. The festival continues to grow and recently received national coverage as the lead story in the Community College Times. Of course, other colleges and nonprofits are calling to learn more. As usual, Northampton leads the way. The College continues to grow and the need for additional on-campus housing is even more critical. The Foundation has agreed to support the construction of a new residence hall to be completed in 2015. The new residence hall will add 300 beds and will allow the college to enroll more international and out-of-county students, further adding to the diversity of our campus. Over the past year, President Erickson engaged the Northampton community to help identify the top five strategic priorities for the College for the next few years. Once again, the Foundation played a key role by providing over $2 million to support the College and its strategic initiatives. In November, my term as chair will end, but I will be handing the gavel to Diane Martin, a capable leader who is very committed to Northampton. Diane will do an outstanding job at leading the Foundation Board into its next successful phase in partnership with the College. We are a college of the community, and our communities have supported us for more than 45 years — not only supported, but embraced. We are in the business of changing lives, and your support not only changes the lives of our students, but our communities as well. Thank you. Whitehouse NCC annual report 2012 . 2013 / 55 / A donor bill of rights Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. To assure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the not-for-profit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights: Our responsibility to you I. To be informed of the organization’s mission, of the way the organization intends to use the donated resources, and of its capacity to use the donations effectively for their intended purposes. II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization’s governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities. III. To have access to the organization’s most recent financial statements. IV. To be assured gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given. V. To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition. VI. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law. VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature. VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors. IX: To have the opportunity for their name to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share. X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers. The Foundation has the responsibility to be accountable to our constituencies: to our board of directors, who serve without remuneration; to Northampton Community College and its leadership, faculty, staff and students; to donors; to our volunteers; and to our own staff. One of the ways in which we do so is to make accessible materials that we believe should be available to those who care about the mission and success of the Northampton Community College Foundation.
