EVENING AUTHOR LECTURE
7:30 P.M................Joseph Kanon, The Good German and Alibi: A Novel
Joseph Kanon joins us before the movie premiere of The Good German, starring George Clooney.
Kanon’s gripping thrillers set a powerful love story and an intriguing mystery against a palpable
historical moment, thus revealing the ambiguities of human relationships and the nature of moral
responsibility. They demonstrate the complications of morality—a secret may not be secret, a lie
isn’t a sin, and murder might be acceptable. Each novel begins with a place that suggests the
story– the Manhattan Project’s Los Alamos in late WWII, post-apocalyptic pockmarked 1946
Germany, 1947 Venice shell-shocked by the nearness of evil, and 1950’s Washington during the
McCarthy Red Scare. Kanon probes the “hinge of the 20th century,” a pivotal time when events
created the world we’ve inherited.

7:30 P.M................Senator Barbara Boxer, A Time to Run
Senator Barbara Boxer brings her insider’s insight to this compelling novel about political
backbiting and power mongering. Boxer and novelist Mary-Rose Hayes recount fictional
Senator Ellen Fisher’s rise to power. Assuming office after the accidental death of her liberal
husband Josh, Ellen stands at the precipice of her career. On the eve of a controversial Supreme
Court nominee vote, Ellen’s former lover — conservative journalist Greg Hunter — delivers
incendiary documents that could alter history. This exciting tale of friendship and betrayal,
idealism and pragmatism, in-fighting and public spin is “a story [she] has long wanted to tell.”

3:30 P.M................Simcha Weinstein, Up, Up, and Oy Vey! : How Jewish History,
Culture, and Values Shaped the Comic Book Superhero
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5
The early comic book creators were mostly Jewish immigrant children tapping into deep Jewish
spiritual beliefs. Fighting for truth, justice and the American Way, the superheroes they created
are descendants of a Jewish tradition of hero-stories from Samson to the Golem of Prague.
Rabbi Weinstein chronicles the Jewish role in the creation of the All-American comic book —
from Krypton to Captain America, Spiderman, and the X-Men. Oy Vey!
AUTHOR LECTURE AND BREAKFAST
9:30 A.M...............Moshe Waldoks, The Big Book Of Jewish Humor,
2006 Edition
The Torah came down from Sinai, but Jewish humor came down from the
Catskills. Humorist Moshe Waldoks offers a broad collection of Jewish jokes
— from the Wise Men of Chelm to Woody Allen, from the Marx Brothers to
Mad Magazine. Jews developed comedy as the art form of social critique,
and 70% of American comedians are Jewish.

Astronomer Isabel Benveniste stirs the soul of Rabbi Kalman Stern, but it takes a
mystical message passed down through the ages in the kabbalistic Zohar to help

over a dozen books on Jewish mysticism and spirituality, reveals the answer to one
of the heart’s eternal questions in his debut novel.

Rabbi Harold Kushner (When Bad Things Happen to Good People) shows us how to be our best selves
when life does not unfold as planned, because “nobody gets everything he or she yearns for.” Vignettes
from the lives of Moses —and other historical and literary figures —teach us the requisite lessons
of strength and faith for facing life’s disappointments both great and small. We learn how to
respond to heartbreak with compassion and understanding, rather than bitterness and despair.
This practical and inspiring book of spiritual wisdom will help us keep our dreams alive.

Early childhood educator and gay issues advocate Jonathan Silin draws upon his professional
skills and personal experiences to help his elderly parents cope with failing health. The inherent
role reversal evokes a lifetime of memories and radically transforms what had been a distant and
emotionally fraught relationship. This nakedly personal and coolly philosophical memoir explores
issues of childhood and parenting, privacy and control, aging and death, betrayal and forgiveness.

Emma Lazarus was a woman ahead of her time–a feminist, Zionist, and Jewish American writer
before such categories even existed. Her compassion for downtrodden Jewish immigrants inspired
her poem that gave a voice to the Statue of Liberty and helped redefine the meaning of America
itself. Drawing upon a cache of personal letters discovered in 1980, Esther Schor brings to life
this vital woman in all her complexity.

Lawyer and politician David Brog goes behind the headlines and beyond conventional politics
to find the truth about Christian Zionism. He details the views and motives that drive leading
Christian Zionists, spotlights the Jews forming an alliance with these Christians, and explores
American Jews’ discomfort with these two groups. Brog’s work helps further the two-millenniain-the-making Christian/Jewish reconciliation he seeks to chronicle.

Who Fled Hitler and Changed the World
In The Great Escape, acclaimed journalist, best-selling author and human rights advocate
Kati Marton describes how nine extraordinary Jewish men from Budapest fled Fascism
and anti-Semitism in Hungary and found sanctuary in England and the USA. Marton’s factual
account of human survival as well as triumph against great odds shows how “magic in their
pockets” helped these nine unique individuals truly change the world.

So often we want our congregations to be more than they are. The time is ripe for a congregation
to be a sacred community where relationships are paramount, worship is engaging, everyone is
learning, healing is offered, and repair of the world is a moral imperative. Dr. Ron Wolfson,
president of Synagogue 3000, University of Judaism Professor, and acclaimed author, has written
a handbook for turning today’s synagogue into a “kehillah kedoshah” where personal and

American in the Israeli Army
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7
When American citizen Adam Harmon joins the Israel Defense Forces’ elite paratrooper recon
unit, he becomes a “chayal boded” – a lonely soldier. With an intimacy the media lacks, he takes
us through the tough training with strict standards that defines Israeli combat. An observant
Jew and ardent Zionist, Harmon embodies essential soldierly virtues while maintaining his
individual moral ethic, in a military that constantly adapts to ever-changing threats.

10:00 A.M.............Laurie Gunst, Off-White: A Memoir
Born into an affluent Southern Jewish family, Gunst recalls her special relationship with
caregiver Rhoda Lloyd in a compelling memoir that acknowledges her black “maid” as the
spiritual mother who shaped her life. Seeing herself as part white, part Jewish and part black,
Gunst explores the shame of her family’s racially intolerant past and her outrage at the racial
discrimination that consigns this beloved woman to a lesser status.

3RD ANNUAL MURRAY GOODMAN MEMORIAL LECTURE
Mothers and daughters go through so much — but when do they sit down to cooperatively
write about their experiences? The Klasses, daughter Perri and mother Sheila, explore the
joys and pains, the love and resentment, and the irritation and respect in the differences and
commonalities that bind them together. This memoir in two distinct but parallel voices is a
resonating duet that all mothers and daughters will recognize.

HADASSAH
Soon after 9/11, Richard Satloff moved his family to Rabat, Morocco, and launched a search
for Arab heroes of the Holocaust. We follow Satloff over 4 years through 11 countries, from
the Sahara to Tunis, London and Paris, as he seeks Righteous Gentiles from the Muslim world.
This cinematic story includes heroes and villains, but the biggest surprise is why so few Arabs
or Jews want this story told.

What happens when 28 prominent Jewish women speak out about guilt? They blast away
hackneyed stereotypes and offer a hilariously moving collection of lessons in assuaging guilt.
Balancing the obligations of heritage with their individual needs and interests, the writers
capture all that is complicated and wonderful about being a Jewish woman at the dawn of the
21st century. Trust me, you’ll feel guilty if you miss this presentation!

3:30 P.M................Denise Epstein presenting, Suite Française
Written by Irene Nemirovsky
As Nazis rolled across France, Russian-born Jew and best-selling French novelist Irene Nemirovsky
wrote two movements of a five-part symphony, a novel to rival War and Peace. Irene and
husband Leon perished in Auschwitz in 1942. But daughters Denise and Elizabeth were hidden
along with the suitcase containing the unfinished manuscript, written in miniscule barely-legible
ink-saving handwriting. Transported to freedom after the war, Suite Française is a gifted account
of foreign occupation, history written as it occurred, imaginatively evoking chaos, fear, humiliation,
and courage.
Daughter Denise Epstein will join us to share her mother’s, and her own testament to occupied France.

3:30 P.M................Rich Cohen, Sweet and Low: A Family Story
This amazingly bittersweet and hilarious story recounts the history of the sweet tooth and
the Machiavellian American family that tamed it. Patriarch Ben Eisenstadt was the short
order cook who invented the sugar packet and Sweet’N Low, converted his Brooklyn cafeteria
into a factory, and amassed the great fortune that destroyed his fractious Jewish clan. Using
those pink packets as a metaphor, Ben’s disinherited grandson Rich Cohen paints a dysfunctional
portrait of the American dream that, in his family’s case, was as devoid of nourishment as
any artificial sweetener.

Fighting his way out of Chicago’s Jewish ghetto, Barney Ross began boxing to earn money to
free his siblings from an orphanage. He earned three world titles, joined the Marines to defeat
compulsive gambling, won a Silver Star, battled morphine addiction, and ran guns for the nascent
Jewish state. Journalist Doug Century offers us a moving biography of one of the most colorful
boxers of the 20th century.

MID-MORNING AUTHOR LECTURE
What began as a correspondence between Dr. Akiva Tatz, an Orthodox Rabbi,
and David Gottlieb, a man seeking a path back to his Judaism, has culminated
in Letters to a Buddhist Jew. This compilation of letters plumbs the
depths of Jewish knowledge and answers the questions disaffected
Jews have sought for decades. The correspondents show us why
Jews are drawn to other faiths and what can draw them back.
10:00 A.M.............Devyani Saltzman, Shooting Water: A Memoir of
Second Chances, Family and Filmmaking
At the age of 11 when her parents divorced, Devyani Saltzman was forced to choose between
her Jewish American father and her Hindu Indian mother. Eight years later, she traveled to
India and rekindled her relationship with her filmmaker mother during the production of
Water, Deepa Mehta’s most controversial movie. This lush evocative memoir of separation
and reconciliation shares the ways that art and life converge.

EVENING AUTHOR LECTURE
Nonie Darwish
Aiming to make the world a better place, scholarly Rabbi Joseph Telushkin helps readers
translate Jewish learning into ethical behavior. You Shall Be Holy distills over 3,000 years
of Jewish teachings on improving one’s character to become honest, decent and just. In a
time of encroaching darkness, this gift to humankind demonstrates that the light of Torah
leads to a life of wholeness while advancing humanity and civilization. Says Sir Jonathan
Sacks: “Read it and you will be inspired. Live it and you will be transformed.” This outstanding
contribution to understanding Jewish ethics has relevance for people of all faiths.
