USA Basketball FIBA Women’s U19 World Championship Team History (1985-2011) 2012 FIBA AMERICAS U18 CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WOMEN Gurabo, Puerto Rico August 15-19, 2012 Despite starting the tournament with just 10 players and finishing with nine after a knee injury sidelined Jannah Tucker in the second game, the 2012 USA U18 National Team overcame adversity to claim the gold medal with a perfect 5-0 slate at the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. In claiming the USA’s sixth-straigh gold at the event, the U.S., guided by University of Miami head coach Katie Meier, qualified for the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship. Opening against Dominican Republic, the USA reeled off the second quarter’s first 31 points and ran away with the 99-26 victory. All 10 players scored no less than five points apiece, including a game-best 23 points from Connecticut freshman-tobe Morgan Tuck, while incoming Notred Dame freshman Michaela Mabrey dished out a USA U18 single-game record 10 assists to go with her nine points and four blocked shots. Behind game-bests of 17 points and 12 boards from Connecticut-bound Breanna Stewart, the USA downed Argentina 68-28 on Aug. 16. Tuck added 13 points and Mabrey scored 12. In its final preliminary round contest, Baylor-bound Alexis Prince scored a game-high 19 points to lead the USA past Colombia 87-36 on Aug. 17. In addition to Prince, who shot 8of-14 from the field, 3-of-6 from 3-point; Tuck shot 7-of-10 from the field and contributed 17 points; while Mabrey tied a U.S. U18 3-point field goal percentage record after netting 83.3 percent (5-6 3pt FGs) of her long-range attempts for 15 points. Stewart and Tuck combined for 42 points and 11 rebounds to lead the U.S. to a 95-46 victory over Canada in the semifinal game on Aug. 18. Tuck shot 9-of-12 and led the way with 22 points, while Stewart shot 8-of-11 from the floor and and finished with 20 points and a game-high eight rebounds. Finding itself in unfamiliar territory, USA never panicked and fought back from a double-digit deficit to claim the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championship gold medal with a 71-47 victory over Brazil on Aug. 19. A trio of players posted doubledoubles, including tournament MVP Stewart, who had 13 points and 10 boards and was the tournament’s second leading scorer (14.0 ppg.) and third leading rebounder (7.8 rpg). Tuck, who topped the tournament charts and set a new USA U18 record for scoring average (17.8 ppg.) had a team-high 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds; while Bashaara Graves had 10 points and 11 boards. After trailing for just 1:44 combined in its first four games, and never by more than three points, the U.S. found itself in the position of having to come from behind by double digits as Brazil held an 18-7 lead 38 seconds into the second quarter. However, the USA turned up its defense, which helped fuel the offense and went ahead by a 29-24 margin at halftime. Upping its lead to 50-31 with the help of a 21-7 third quarter output, the U.S. cruised in for the eventual win and gold. Argentina edged Canada 53-49 in the bronze medal game. 2012 USA WOMEN’S U18 CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM ROSTER NAME Candice Agee Lexie Brown Kendall Cooper Bashaara Graves Moriah Jefferson Michaela Mabrey Alexis Prince Breanna Stewart Morgan Tuck Jannah Tucker POS C G C F G G G/F F/C F G HGT 6-6 5-9 6-3 6-2 5-7 5-11 6-2 6-4 6-2 6-0 WGT 190 145 190 185 122 135 170 175 190 175 AGE 18 17 17 18 18 18 18 18 18 17 SCHOOL Silverado High School North Gwinnett High School St. Anthony High School Clarksville High School Texas Home Educators Sports Association Manasquan High School Edgewater High School Cicero-North Syracuse High School Bolingbrook High School New Town High School HOMETOWN Victorville, CA Suwanee, GA Carson, CA Clarksville, TN Glenn Heights, TX Holmdel, NJ Orlando, FL North Syracuse, NY Bolingbrook, IL Randallstown, MD HEAD COACH: Katie Meier, University of Miami ASSISTANT COACH: Nikki Caldwell, Louisiana State University ASSISTANT COACH: Kelly Graves, Gonzaga University TEAM PHYSICIAN: Dave Weinstein, Colorado Springs, Colorado ATHLETIC TRAINER: Anne Marquez, University of Notre Dame 2012 USA U18 RESULTS (5-0) USA 99 Dominican Rep. 26 USA 68 Argentina 28 USA 87 Colombia 36 USA 95 Canada 46 USA 71 Brazil 47 52 2012 FIBA AMERICAS U18 CHAMP. Featuring a young team loaded with talent, all 12 members had previously won gold medals, including seven at the inaugural 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship and five from the 2010 FIBA Americas U18 Championship. The American women got down to business from the start as they defeated Japan 85-63. Bria Hartley was 3-of-4 from 3-point land to pace the U.S. with 18 points. Diamond DeShields poured in a game-high 16 points to lead the USA in its second game, a 76-53 victory over Russia. The USA, paced by 12 points from Breanna Stewart, ran away with a 83-49 victory over Argentina to close preliminary round play atop Group B. In a game that went down to the wire, the U.S. remained undefeated as it clipped a determined China squad 80-77 to open the second round. The USA was paced to the win by Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Hartley, who scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, on a combined 9-of-16 from beyond the arc. The Americnas opened up a 31-13 lead in the first quarter and went on to produce a lopsided 94-60 victory over Italy. This time it was Cierra Burdick’s turn to lead the team as she came off the bench for a game-high 17 points. Turnovers and cold shooting plagued the U.S. from the start as Canada handed the U.S. its first loss, 64-52, to close second round play. Ariel Massengale was the only U.S. player to score in double digits and finished with 17 points. The U.S., which fell behind by double digits early, finished the game with 24 miscues and a 36.1 shooting percentage, its lowest of the tournament. Despite the setback, the U.S. was still in the medal hunt and was paced by 21 points, including 10 in the fourth quarter, from Stewart, as it came from behind for a 70-64 victory over France in the quarterfinals. Down by 13 points early, the U.S. never gave up, took a two-point lead on a pair of Stewart free throws with 1:04 to go and pulled out the six-point win. The U.S. took the lead in the first quarter and never looked back as it knocked off Brazil 82-66 to advance to the gold medal game. Hartley led the U.S. for the second time in the tournament with 20 points. The USA wasted no time in jumping out to a 25-15 early advantage and rolling to a 69-46 victory over Spain for the gold medal. Stefanie Dolson, Mosqueda-Lewis and Elizabeth Williams shared game-high scoring honors with 15 points apiece; while Massengale and Stewart were named to the fivemember All-FIBA U19 World Championship Team. Brazil nipped Australia 70-67 for the bronze medal, its first medal of any kind in U19 World Championship history. 2011 USA WOMEN’S U19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM ROSTER NAME POS Jordan Adams G Cierra Burdick F Diamond DeShields F Stefanie Dolson C Bria Hartley G Malina Howard F/C Alexis Jones G Ariel Massengale G Kaleena Mosqueda- Lewis F Breanna Stewart F/C Morgan Tuck F Elizabeth Williams C HGT 6-1 6-2 6-1 6-5 5-10 6-4 5-8 5-6 6-0 6-4 6-2 6-3 WGT 165 160 155 210 142 205 150 149 180 170 185 195 AGE 17 18 16 19 18 18 17 17 18 16 17 18 SCHOOL Mater Dei High School Butler High School / Tennessee Norcross High School University of Connecticut University of Connecticut Twinsburg High School Irving MacArthur High School Bolingbrook High School / Tennessee Mater Dei High School / Connecticut Cicero-North Syracuse High School Bolingbrook High School Princess Anne High School / Duke HEAD COACH: Jennifer Rizzotti, University of Hartford ASSISTANT COACH: Sue Semrau, Florida State University TEAM PHYSICIAN: Dave Weinstein, Colorado Springs, CO 2011 USA USA USA USA USA USA Canada USA USA USA 54 RESULTS (8-1) 85 Japan 76 Russia 83 Argentina 80 China 94 Italy 64 USA 70 France 82 Brazil 69 Spain 63 53 49 77 60 52 64 66 46 HOMETOWN Irvine, CA Matthews, NC Norcross, GA Port Jervis, NY North Babylon, NY Twinsburg, OH Irving, TX Bolingbrook, IL Anaheim, CA North Syracuse, NY Bolingbrook, IL Virginia Beach, VA ASSISTANT COACH: Joi Williams, Univ. of Central Florida ATHLETIC TRAINER: Summer McKeehan, Duke University 2011 FIBA U19 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS 1.
