WELCOME TO We are excited to have you participate in our STARTING POINT class. This class has been designed to give you a better picture of who we are as a church. We want to explain to you the beliefs, practices, direction and values of BBC. As a Church family, we want to be a part of this journey God has you on as He grows and develops you in the faith. Thanks for being here. & www.BruceFrank.org Follow Pastor Bruce @brucefrank1 35 Clayton Road • Arden, NC 28704 828.687.1111 • www.biltmorebaptist.org @biltmore search Facebook for Biltmore & specific ministries T H E B I LT M O R E FA M I LY Over 100 years ago a small group of people organized Fern Hill Baptist Church on land close to the Biltmore Estate. The church later moved its meeting place to Summit Street in Biltmore and changed its name to Biltmore Baptist Church. After years at a location on Hendersonville Road, we relocated to our present site in April 2000, celebrating our first service here on Easter Sunday. Since then several expansions have taken place, including added space for children and students, increased parking spaces and Worship Center seating, and the addition of athletic fields. Dr. Bruce Frank was called to Biltmore in 2008 as our Lead Pastor. He came from Houston, TX with his wife Lori and their two sons, Tyler and Conner. Pastor Bruce has a strong conviction about the Word of God, combined with a burden for lost people. His messages are heard in eight states on The Vertical Life on WMIT 106.9 each Sunday morning. Biltmore has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top 100 fastest growing churches in America. Biltmore Baptist now averages over 6,000 worshippers each weekend on three campuses. Biltmore became a multi-site church in 2012 with the opening of an East Campus to serve the East Asheville/Buncombe area, and launched another campus in Franklin, NC, at the Smoky Mountain Center for Performing Arts in August 2013. In addition, Biltmore has a church plant, Journey Church, located in Morganton, NC, as well as two college venues – one at WCU in Cullowhee and another at UNC-Asheville. Throughout the year, BBC volunteers serve and minister to 22 local mission partners across WNC and numerous foreign mission partners. Our foreign mission focus is currently centered on continuing commitments in Kenya and Guatemala. We are praying about and researching another possible campus launch for 2015. exists TO GLORIFY GOD by DEVELOPING DISCIPLES WHO DISCIPLESHIP Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:18-19 3 MY WORSHIP corporate & private Why Do We Reach Up through Worship? We believe that God desires for us to worship Him and is worthy of it. (John 4:23-24) God commands it. Ascribe to the Lord, O families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. (Psalm 96:7-8a) It will bring the worshipper into a life-changing and dynamic experience with the living God. (Hebrews 10:24-25) “God’s Son ferverently worshipped in spirit and truth brings down His glory at church.” Biltmore’s Style of Worship Vertically directed and culturally relevant Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 96:1 • Built on the Word of God 2 Timothy 3:16 – 4:2 • Built on Prayer 1 Thessalonians 5:16 –18 • Built on Music Psalm 81:1– 4 Biltmore music seeks to honor and please God first. We use contemporary worship styles but also value and incorporate the depth that hymns bring to worship. Sundays at 6 pm My Private Worship and Time with God 1. What is a Quiet Time? A quiet time is my daily time alone with God to get to know Him better through prayer and reading the Word of God. It is my time of private worship. 2. Why have a Quiet Time? • You were created to have fellowship with God. (Genesis 1:27, 2:7, 3:8) • Jesus, through His death, made it possible for us to have a relationship with God. • Jesus made it a priority to spend time with the Father. • You cannot be a healthy Christian without spending time with God. (Matthew 4:4) 3. How Do I Begin? Choose a specific….. TIME. If possible, have your quiet time in the morning before your day begins. Night time is better than not at all. PLACE. Choose a place where there are the least amount of distractions. Keep it special. RESOURCE. Choose a Bible that best fits your ability to understand what the writer is communicating. Have a notebook and pen for journaling. How Do I Get Started? “Fifteen Minutes with God” Relax (1 minute) Be still and be quiet! Slow down! Prepare your heart. Take a few deep breaths and wait on God. Read (5 minutes) Begin reading where you left off the day before. Read until you feel God has told you something. Then stop and think about it. Reflect (3 minutes) Think about what the passage means to your life. Write down your thoughts. Write (2 minutes) Write a personal application statement that is practical. Talk to God (4 minutes) Conclude your quiet time by talking to God about what He has shown you and making requests from your prayer list. DEVELOPING COMMUNITY WHY? HOW DO I GET CONNECTED? You were not designed to walk through life alone. Whatever you are going through, life is better when you are connected with others. One of the best ways to get involved in a new church is to connect with a group of people who are in a similar lifestage and who often share common experiences. A. You will have an opportunity to sign up for a Connect Group at the conclusion of this class. “The Christian life is not a solo sport it’s a team sport.” Connect/home Groups… At Biltmore, groups of people gather weekly to grow spiritually, be encouraged, develop friendships and experience life together. The smaller groups that meet on Sunday mornings are called Connect Groups. (Schedules for each campus are noted below.) Other groups meet in homes throughout the community at various times and days, and are known as Home Groups. Regardless of when or where they meet, each group welcomes new participants. • Arden Campus Connect Groups meet on Sunday mornings at 8:00, 9:15, and 10:45 am. Home Groups meet Monday-Thursday evenings. • East Campus Connect Groups meet Sunday mornings at 9:30 am. Ministry and missions are the fruit of our consuming passion to glorify God as we seek to fulfill the Great Commission. God made you to make a difference in your world. He has gifted every believer with talents, experiences, resources and spiritual gifts in order to be a blessing to others. Ephesians 2:10; 1 Peter 4:10 Two ways we serve the Lord are through: 1.Ministry through the local church 2.Ministry through outreach, both locally and globally MINISTRY THROUGH THE LOCAL CHURCH There are thousands of volunteer opportunities each week at Biltmore. They come in all shapes, skill levels and time commitments. (Ex. - greeters, musicians, webcast, teachers, coaches, hospital, children’s ministry, prison ministry, etc.) Each Biltmore member is asked to participate by contributing their time to one ministry. To serve: • Fill out the Personal Action Plan tonight • A staff member will call soon to provide additonal information. • Participate in training to do your ministry well or use PLACE to discover your gifts. MINISTRY THROUGH MISSIONS “…and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 The gospel of Christ is a global gospel and each church has a role in spreading it from across the street to around the world. Biltmore’s strategy includes: You Every follower of Christ has an opportunity and calling to influence people for Christ (2 Corinthians 5:20). This includes many ways such as lifestyle, inviting others to church or a special event, prayer, sharing the gospel, etc. Local Partners We have many ministry partners in our local communities who offer opportunities to serve meals to the homeless, sort baby clothes, use administrative skills, help needy families with minor construction repairs, or work with orphans. Some of our ministry partners include: Western Carolina Rescue Ministry, Asheville Pregnancy Support Services, Athletes Outreach Ministry, Celebrate Recovery, Craggy Correctional Center, Operation Christmas Child, Military Care, Bethany Christian Services, Crossfire, Disaster Relief, Black Mountain Home for Children, Truth Action, ABCCM, Youth for Christ and SPAN. Periodically throughout the year, strategic LOVE LOUD service projects are coordinated through Connect Groups with local mission partners and in our communities. National and Global Partners Short-term mission trips are planned throughout the year to work with our national and international missionaries and mission partners. A five year strategy has been adopted to focus our efforts in areas of great lostness and church planting. Our international focus is Guatemala and Kenya, where we have ongoing commitments that include: church plants; training facilities and opportunities for pastors; help in providing for the needs of orphans and destitute children; child prostitution rescue and training for the girls; securing clean water and providing agricultural assistance and periodic medical and dental clinics. For more information go to biltmorebaptist.org/missions WHO WE ARE AS A CHURCH The ministry structure and philosophy helps us focus on the main things. We exist primarily to be an instrument of the Holy Spirit in order for Him to bring people into a saving relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ and then develop them into a growing disciple (“follower”) of Christ. We attempt to evaluate all our ministries through this perspective. The continual assessment of “why we do what we do” is what gives us direction and allows us to be focused. Ministry Structure Our structure is built around the purpose of equipping the saints for ministry (Ephesians 4:1116). God has blessed you with unique gifts and abilities, and desires for you to be used for His glory and honor. Our goal is to help you find that PLACE of ministry and equip you to minister for others’ good and God’s glory. Our Church Government In accordance with Colossians 1:18, Christ is the Head of the Church. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. Biltmore Baptist is a Pastor-led/staff-led, teamfacilitated, deacon-served church. (1 Peter 5:1-2; 1 Timothy 3; Acts 6) We are a Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) church. Every SBC church chooses its own pastor, owns its own buildings and assets, and determines its own programs. STEWARDSHIP OF RESOURCES “Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the firstfruits of all your crops;” Proverbs 3:9 Giving helps me express my thankfulness to God. God proves Himself faithful when I give. “How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me?” Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed; Psalm 116:12 Giving strengthens my faith and blesses me. “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 “A generous man will himself be blessed.” Proverbs 22:9 2 Corinthians 9:6–8 Giving is an investment in heaven. should I give? Initially the church that you “Do not store up for yourselves treasures Where attend. on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, where thieves break in and steal. that there may be food in my But store up for yourselves house. Test me in this,” says treasures in heaven, where the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open moth and rust do not the floodgates of heaven destroy, and where thieves and pour out so much WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN do not break in and steal.” blessing that you will not Matthew 6:19-20 have room enough for it.” What should I give? “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops” Proverbs 3:9 “Tithe” means “a tenth part” or 10% of all I earn. Malachi 3:10 Offering Offering envelopes are mailed quarterly to all Biltmore members. We encourage you to use them as you give, or you may give securely online at www.biltmorebaptist.org/give. WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT... 1. God God is the Creator and Ruler of the universe. He has eternally existed in three personalities: The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. These three are co-equal and are one God. Genesis 1:1, 26, 27; 3:22; Psalm 90:2; Matthew 28:19; I Peter 1:2; II Corinthians 13:14 2. Jesus Christ Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is co-equal with the Father. Jesus lived a sinless human life and offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of all people by dying on a cross. He arose from the dead after three days to demonstrate His power over sin and death. He ascended to Heaven’s glory and will return again someday to earth to reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. Matthew 1:22-23; Isaiah 9:6; John 1:1-5, 14:1030; Hebrews 4:14-15; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Romans 1:3-4; Acts 1:9-11; I Timothy 6:14-15; Titus 2:13 3. The Holy Spirit We believe in the total deity of the Holy Spirit and that His ministry is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. John 16:14 The Holy Spirit regenerates the sinner upon belief in Christ, baptizing the believer into the body of which Christ is the head. The Holy Spirit indwells, guides, instructs, fills, comforts and empowers the believer for godly living. The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, of God’s righteousness and of coming judgment. While we believe that the Scriptures do not teach that certain gifts have ceased, they indicate that use of the gifts vary according to the need that each gift meets. Biltmore Baptist Church does not encourage the use of “sign gifts.” Instead, we seek to emphasize the more excellent way of love as well as zeal for the more edifying gifts. John 16:8, 13:15; Titus 3:5; Ephesians 1:22, 4:11-12; Romans 8:9-17, 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 3:16, 12:4-5, 12:11-13, 12:19; Galatians 5:25; Hebrews 4:1-4; 2 Corinthians 12:12 4. The Bible The Bible is God’s Word to us. It was written by human authors, under the supernatural guidance of the Holy Spirit. It is the supreme source of truth for Christian beliefs and living. Because it is inspired by God, it is the truth without any mixture of error. II Timothy 3:16; II Peter 1:20-21; II Timothy 1:13; Psalm 119:105, 160; Psalm 12:6; Proverbs 30:5 5. Salvation Salvation is God’s free gift to us, but we must receive it. We can never make up for our sin by self-improvement or good words. Only by trusting in Jesus Christ as God’s offer of forgiveness can anyone be saved from sin’s penalty. When we turn from our self-ruled life and turn to Jesus in faith we are saved. Eternal life begins the moment one receives Jesus Christ into his life by faith. Romans 6:23; Ephesians 2:8-9; John 14:6; John 1:12; Titus 3:5; Galatians 3:26; Romans 5:1 Mark 13:11; John 14:26; John 16:13; Romans 5:5; 1 Corinthians 3:16; John 16:8-11 For more detailed theological statements see www.biltmorebaptist.org/beliefs ORDINANCES WE CELEBRATE Baptism The Lord’s Supper Why every believer should be baptized... Jesus never asked His disciples to remember His birth. He did, however, instruct them to remember His death and resurrection. 1.Jesus commanded it. Matthew 28:19; John 14:21 2.Baptism is an act of obedience. Mark 1:9; Acts 2:41; 8:38 3.It’s a picture of what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross, was buried, and rose again. Romans 6:4 4.Baptism is a public testimony of your faith and presents a picture of the change from your past to your new life in Jesus. Acts 2:41 Why baptism is by immersion in water... The word for baptism in Greek is “baptisma,” which translated means “to immerse.” Baptism is the complete submersion of the person in the water. At Biltmore it’s a membership requirement that every member must have been baptized the way Jesus demonstrated, even though many of us were “confirmed” as children. • Object lesson of great Spiritual Truth. • Bread represents the Body of Christ. • Juice represents the Blood of Christ. • It is a Reminder. 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 • It is a Symbol. 1 Corinthians 11:25 • It is for Believers only. 1 Corinthians 11:27-29 BECOMING A CHRIST FOLLOWER There’s a lot of confusion in our world today about the true meaning of Christianity. Even in our churches, opinions vary on how to obtain salvation. The Bible is very clear on how to get to heaven. God Wants You to Know… “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” 1 John 5:13 …that He loves you. Because of His love for all people, He sent His only son to die on the cross. John 3:16; Ephesians 2:4-6 …that you’re a sinner. All of us are sinners in that we disobey God. Sin is choosing to go your way versus God’s way. Isaiah 53:6; Romans 3:10 …that sin separates you from God. Sin separates you from having fellowship or a relationship with God. God is holy. Isaiah 59:2; Romans 3:23 …that you can’t save yourself. People often think that good works will get them to heaven. There is nothing you can do to earn God’s salvation. It is a gift from God. Ephesians 2:8-9; Titus 3:5; Romans 4:4-5 …that God sent His Son to bridge the gap of separation. Jesus’ death allows us access to God. God did for you in Jesus what you could not do for yourself. Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21 …that you receive Jesus Christ through faith. Faith is trusting in Jesus Christ and what He has done for you already, rather than trusting in your own efforts. Faith is complete reliance on Christ and allowing Him to live His life through you. Faith also involves repentance and willingness to turn from our sin.
