Covington Laura Sudler EX OFFICIO Michael P. Kelly AT THE CHICAGO ACADEMY OF SCIENCES / PEGGY NOTEBAERT NATURE MUSEUM, EDUCATION IS EMBEDDED IN OUR DNA. For nearly 160 years, our commitment to education has never wavered. Whether it is an exhibit opening inside the walls of our museum or at some of the most under-served schools in the city, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum is committed to championing a connection to nature and science for people of all ages. Chicago has grown immensely since our founding in 1857, but no matter how urban the city becomes or how much sprawl populates the region, people will always yearn to experience authentic nature. Throughout this annual report, we will feature examples from each of our departments that highlight the ways “we teach.” Those two words are the foundation of everything that we do. Our commitment to education throughout the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum was recognized by the Illinois Association of Museums; the Association selected the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum as the Leader Institution of the Year. Doug Taron, PhD, Curator of Biology and Vice President of Conservation and Research, was selected as the Professional of the Year. For us to realize these types of accomplishments, it takes the commitment of every staff member and all of our volunteers. Their dedication and passion drives us forward each day. And of course, none of our work would be possible without the generous support from the Chicago Park District and gifts from individuals, foundations and corporations, as well as the support of every Museum member and guest. As always, we thank you all for your continued support and commitment to the Chicago Academy of Sciences/Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, the urban gateway to nature and science! Susan Whiting, Chair Board of Trustees Deb Lahey, President & CEO THE PEGGY NOTEBAERT NATURE MUSEUM STRIVES TO FIND THE INNER SCIENTIST THAT RESIDES IN ALL OF US THE CHICAGO ACADEMY OF SCIENCES was the first museum to loan materials to schools to enhance their science learning. Today, we reach more than 70,000 Chicago-area students and teachers a year inside the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and in schools across Chicago. In 2015, more than 750 classes enjoyed field trip workshops at the Nature Museum. But our teaching doesn’t end with the education department. Teaching is infused in everything that we do. From bringing live animals into the classroom to make nature and science come alive, through programming, research and conservation and citizen science initiatives, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum strives to find the inner scientist that resides in all of us. Read on to see some of the examples of the way that the Nature Museum teaches and connects across a diverse range of departments and platforms. /4/ EDUCATION THANKS TO THE GENEROUS SUPPORT of Motorola Solutions Foundation and a number of other valued funders, the Nature Museum’s School Science Partnerships program is coming to Chicago Public Schools. This comprehensive program—piloted in private schools—gives Nature Museum educators the chance to impact an entire school’s science classes in a holistic way. It is tailored to meet the needs of each specific school, integrates Next Generation Science Standards and incorporates Nature Museum resources into the curriculum to provide authentic learning experiences. One of the principals whose school was transformed by this partnership said that while his students speak a dozen different languages, “science has become a universal language.” A RECORD 31 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS participated in our TEENS program in 2015, thanks to support from After School Matters and Hive Chicago. The teens spent their time immersed in scientific discovery, learning environmental monitoring techniques, collecting data and sharing it through digital mapping and open source websites. They also contributed to citizen science projects and embarked on projects of their own, such as identifying trees suffering from Emerald Ash Borer damage and observing and recording dragonfly behavior. One particular highlight for the group was interviewing farmers at the Green City Market about using local ingredients, sustainable farming and conservation practices. Then, they enjoyed a delicious potluck lunch of market items including fresh bread, tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, fruit and apple cider. AT THE NATURE MUSEUM, we teach teachers as well. After a Science Teaching Network program focused on the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), feedback included: I understand NGSS so much better. Everything was so well organized which makes me feel prepared to implement the curriculum. We have no science curriculum and very few resources at my school. This is so helpful. I feel excited and ready to teach. I now have a better understanding of the NGSS. THIS COMPREHENSIVE PROGRAM GIVES NATURE MUSEUM EDUCATORS THE CHANCE TO IMPACT AN ENTIRE SCHOOL’S SCIENCE CLASSES IN A HOLISTIC WAY. /6/ SCIENCE HAS BECOME A UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE BIOLOGY THE ENDANGERED SWAMP METALMARK BUTTERFLY has a new lease on life at Bluff Spring Fen in Elgin, Illinois. For the second time in three years, our scientists released Swamp Metalmarks that that were reared at the Nature Museum in an effort to repopulate a species that is at risk of extinction. This ongoing effort marks the first time in more than 70 years the Swamp Metalmark and its glittering, silver-gold wings have flown in Northern Illinois. The Swamp Metalmark now has an opportunity to repopulate in its natural environment and add diversity to our urban ecosystem. THE NATURE MUSEUM’S DOUG TARON was one of two American scientists invited to participate in a meeting in Germany to develop global frameworks for butterfly monitoring. The meeting was sponsored by Geo Bon, an organization that provides a global, scientifically robust framework for observations on the detection of biodiversity changes. The group focused on a limited number of monitoring techniques that could be coordinated throughout the world to bring uniformity to data collection. Doug shared monitoring techniques and best practices from the Nature Museum’s Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network with the participants. The end goal is that these uniform frameworks and techniques will provide structure to the people starting and managing monitoring programs along with producing more consistent, meaningful data. Doug also was the lead author for a chapter in the book Butterfly Conservation in North America: Efforts to Help Save our Charismatic Microfauna. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN MORE THAN 70 YEARS THE SWAMP METALMARK AND ITS GLITTERING, SILVER-GOLD WINGS HAVE FLOWN IN NORTHERN ILLINOIS. /8/ MUSEUM EXPERIENCE OUR EXHIBITS INSPIRE and foster a connection to the natural world. The self-produced exhibit Nature’s Struggle: Survival & Extinction earned praise from the Chicago Tribune (“...the exhibit, made in-house at the Notebaert, strikes a superb balance between speaking to children and adults.”) and was selected for an Exhibit Merit Award by the Illinois Association of Museums. They wrote: “The exhibit highlights an important topic, and using the points of view of children to tell the story with the added feature of multiple interactive areas certainly makes the exhibit an interesting place to visit.” THE EXHIBIT RAINFOREST ADVENTURE opened to rave reviews and made a star of Iggy, a Blue-Throated Macaw. Unlike many natural history museums, the Nature Museum features live animals in most exhibits and its living collection resides throughout the Museum. Chicago Parent wrote, “Head to the Notebaert Nature Museum’s new exhibit, Rainforest Adventure, which reminds families just how important it is to have a little lush green in their lives.” Programming that complemented the exhibit included “A Word About Birds” and “Venomous or Poisonous.” PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT THE CHICAGO ACADEMY OF SCIENCES INVITED THE COMMUNITY to participate in scientific research a century before it was called citizen science. Today, we feature nationally-recognized citizen science programs such as the Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network, Project Squirrel and The Calling Frog Survey. In fact, the Illinois Butterfly Monitoring Network is regarded as the model for all other butterfly monitoring programs. ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENT QUESTIONS FROM PROSPECTIVE VOLUNTEERS is how to connect with the right organization. A little more than one week after Valentine’s Day, the Nature Museum once again proved to be a volunteer matchmaker extraordinaire. More than 1,000 people had the opportunity to meet with more than 90 non-profit organizations throughout Chicago. The volunteers engaged in one-on-one conversations with organizations’ representatives to help identify which non-profit’s mission aligns best with their passions and interests. THE WINTERS ARE TOUGH IN CHICAGO for even the hardiest of us. That’s why when summer rolls around, we love to celebrate it at the Nature Museum. On four Thursdays during the summer, beginning with the Summer Solstice, the Nature Museum hosted extended hours featuring family-friendly activities happening inside and outside the Museum. Our final Summer Thursday drew a crowd of nearly 600 who enjoyed the opportunity to connect with nature and interact with live animals. /10/ RAINFOREST ADVENTURE OPENED TO RAVE REVIEWS AND MADE A STAR OF IGGY, A BLUE-THROATED MACAW. A BANNER YEAR IN FISCAL YEAR 2015, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum set a new attendance record of 287,590 visitors in the museum. Our 14 percent growth in attendance was double the growth of the average increase for Museums In the Park institutions. THE 17TH ANNUAL BUTTERFLY BALL welcomed our largest ever gathering of 760 and the signature fundraiser raised a record $1.85 million to support the Nature Museum’s essential science-education initiatives. During the cocktail hour, guests explored the museum and had the chance to see many of the hands-on methods that the Nature Museum uses to educate and inspire schoolchildren and guests. Highlights included interacting with live animals such as an albino Burmese python and Lilac-Crowned Amazon parrot, as well as interactive stations with preserved and taxidermied specimens. The Motorola Solutions Foundation received the Nature Museum’s award for Leadership in Support of Science and Education. IN FISCAL YEAR 2015, THE MUSEUM SET A NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD OF 287,590 VISITORS IN THE MUSEUM. /12/ RESULTS FROM OPERATIONS FISCAL 2015 AMOUNT FISCAL 2014 PERCENTAGE AMOUNT PERCENTAGE REVENUES Public Support Contributions Contracts and Grants Earned Admissions Other Earned Income Investment Income Total Operating Revenue $ 1,087 2,984 925 321 809 4 $ 6,129 17.7% 48.7% 15.1% 5.2% 13.2% 0.1% 100.0% $ 1,055 3,036 1,027 310 745 3 $ 6,177 17.2% 49.5% 16.8% 5.1% 12.2% 0.1% 100.0% Program Services Management and General Fundraising Total Operating Expenses $ 3,946 1,281 497 $ 5,724 68.9% 22.4% 8.7% 100.0% $ 4,293 1,125 416 $ 5,835 75.0% 19.7% 7.3% 100.0% Gain From Operations $ 405 Depreciation Expense Net Operating Loss $ 694 (289) 924 $ (582) Other Non-operating Income (Expense) Increase (Decrease) in Net Assets $ (19) (308) 96 $ (485) Total Unrestricted Net Assets at June 30 $ 10,354 EXPENSES $ 343 NON-OPERATING ITEMS $ 10,662 Results in 000s 2014–2015 FINANCIALS YEAR ENDING JUNE 30, 2015 OVER 1,000 HOURS Jessica Bernstein Judith Brenner Ross Capaccio Doris Devine Lalainya Goldsberry Cindy Gray Marina Hanes Lorraine Kells JoAnne Kempf Dee Kenney Vickie Lau Claire McPartlin Joan Rathbone Valerie Sands Dick Scheiberle Sheri Thomas 500 HOURS TO 1,000 HOURS Alan Barney Robert Bernstein Joan Bledig Claire Bolton Catherine Collins VOLUNTEER HOURS REPRESENTING THE NATURE MUSEUM WITH KNOWLEDGE AND A SMILE; WELCOMING GUESTS; TENDING TO LIVE ANIMALS; LEADING WALKS ALONG THE NORTH POND; STAFFING FESTIVALS AND NUMEROUS PUBLIC PROGRAMS; MONITORING THE JUDY ISTOCK BUTTERFLY HAVEN; THIS IS ONLY A PARTIAL LIST OF WHAT OUR VOLUNTEERS DO.
