When Michael Phipps took to the stage to play the part of a De La
Salle Christian Brother during a high school variety show, he wasn’t
expecting that role would foreshadow his ultimate vocation. He was
only a freshman at La Salle High School in Yakima, Washington—
and just starting to break in his dancing shoes—but his reverence for
the Lasallian life had begun to take hold.
Throughout his schooling at the University of Northern Colorado
Michael remained involved with Lasallian Student Leaders and Lasallian Collegians. He met Marilyn Paquette (99-01), an alum of
Lasallian Volunteers and former chair of the Lasallian Volunteers
Advisory Board. Marilyn would become one of the most influential
people along his vocational path.
Marilyn admits she can be “annoyingly Lasallian sometimes.” But
she noticed that same fervor in Michael.
“To see him as a Lasallian for life was a given for me,” Marilyn says.
And her certainty was just the encouragement he needed to agree to
join the Lasallian Volunteers in 2009.
The Christian Service program at Saint Raymond High
School for Boys’ strives to bring young men out of the
classroom and engage the Bronx in a whole new way. Each
student is asked to complete a reflection paper to serve as a
way for them to process experiences and show me that they
are meeting the learning outcomes.
Freshmen serve at the St. Augustine Food Pantry. It challenges these young Ravens to step out of their comfort zones
by seeing, smelling, touching, and speaking to the food
pantry clients as they come into the pantry. I love witnessing
my students’ transformation as they overcome their preconceived notions and take their faith deeper.
A student’s reflection (on the following page) meets the
learning outcomes I set from his very first sentences. His
experience left him feeling humble and willing to serve in
the future. In recognizing his inexperience and willingness to
open up, he senses authentic happiness that does not come
from material possessions. Most importantly, he draws a
connection to Christ calling him to serve the least among
him in the future. He questions food distribution inequalities and links it to Jesus providing for the masses when they
do not have enough to eat. His faith is the catalyst drawing
him to those society often marginalizes. It makes me proud
to see a student (a freshman in particular) grasp his service
learning experience with the faith and zeal that each Lasallian strives for.
My service experience as a Lasallian Volunteer closely
resembles this Christian Service novice’s—I came to St.
Ray’s to push myself to be uncomfortable. Each day, I call
Jesus to live in my heart forever, that prayer is answered

nearby, but was still
unsure what to expect.
“I was scared to death the entire summer,” Michael remembers.
It wasn’t until after a few weeks in Rhode Island, and several long
conversations at the beach with his fellow Lasallian Volunteers that he
felt at peace. “It was authentic,” he remembers, “I felt like these people
I had known for less than a month, I could trust.” His volunteer experience played an integral role in helping him to explore and strengthen
his spiritual life, within a familial environment.
“It’s a welcoming environment of being in this family, to allow someone to fully express themselves,” Amanda says. She remembers Michael’s fear that he may not pray correctly. Yet, with encouragement
from his community and the Christian Brothers, Michael developed
his passion for liturgical dance during this time,
often leading the group in an improvised prayerful dance.
With a background in ballet, modern and classical dance, Michael was overjoyed to use his gift
to connect with his community, and with God.
He also remembers discovering an unexpected
joy in teaching, in witnessing his students succeed and creating bonds with them. He remembers one student he taught in 7th grade, whom he
helped apply to get into high school, and whose
graduation he will attend this spring.
“Very often as educators, we don’t get the chance
to see the fruits of our labors,” Michael says.
“There are rare glimpses of that … that’s the cross
between ministries becoming prayer and prayer becoming ministries.”
After serving two years in Rhode Island, Michael became an LV Scholar at Lewis University. For the first time, he began seriously discerning the brotherhood. He reached out to Brother Stephen Markham,
FSC about joining the Midwest District Contact program for men interested in potentially becoming a De La Salle Christian Brother.
“He was one of the men at the top of the list,” Br. Stephen remembers.
“Community is a very powerful experience,” adds Br. Michael Reis,
FSC, Michael’s former Community Director. “We all listen for God’s
call to each of us. Community helped Michael to hear that call.”
Surrounded by other men who were also considering a religious vocation, Michael finally felt he could open himself up to the possibility,
despite any trepidation. “When I thought about becoming a Brother,”
Michael remembers. “I had complete peace. I had questions but I was
okay with the questions.”
Michael Phipps will enter the Novitiate in August, after which he will
profess first vows as a De La Salle Christian Brother.

as my students open my eyes to a world self discovery and
social justice. Reflections like this challenge me to humble
myself because of the growth and example of these wonderful
students. I hope to finish my time as a Lasallian Volunteer
following God’s command in Deuteronomy to “be open
toward your brother and toward the poor.” Only when doing
this, can Jesus live in my heart, forever.
After completing a service learning experience through the Christian Service program at Saint Raymond High School for Boys in
the Bronx, LV Steven Patzke’s student wrote this inspired reflection for class.
THE STUDENT REFLECTION
by Saint Raymond Student
The service that I provided was serving food to the homeless
in a soup kitchen. When I went there, I felt very nervous. I
did not know what to expect. I never served food to anyone
except my family.
We were a group of students and we all went to different
spots that were assigned to us.
“When I started,
I felt I wanted to go home”
When I started, I felt I wanted to go home—this is not for
me. But as time passed I realized that I was doing something
very good. I forgot about the feeling I had.
I saw how lucky I was. I don’t have to worry about my next
plate of food. My parents make sure of that.
During this time, I thought of the thousands and thousands
of people dying of hunger worldwide.
How can this happen?
I thought the universe is supposed to provide enough food
for the whole world. I was wrong.
One of the challenges I needed to overcome was not to
be judgmental. First I thought why don’t these people stop
spending money on useless things, but when I saw seniors and
children, I stopped. I thought many things, many thoughts
rushed through my mind.
Why is this happening?
Is this what I have to look forward to when I get older, to
walk around this country seeing the people in the thousands
suffering from starvation? For a moment I wished I was Jesus.
I remember the story when Jesus multiplied the fish to feed
the mass crowd of people before him. “God,” I said in my
head, “please Lord help these people so they don’t have to suffer and worry where their next meal will come from.”
While I was distributing the food, one old lady said to me,
“God bless you.” It made me feel that I was doing something
important. I was so involved with what I was doing that for a
moment I felt like a monk or priest in the wilderness helping
and protecting the less.
I decided right then and there I will continue to do this every time I can. This whole experience has humbled me. It has
taught me to be less arrogant.
Deuteronomy 15:11, “There will always be poor people in
the land, therefore I command you to be open handed toward
your brother and toward the poor and the needy in your land.”

MISSION
Called to
Education
The Lasallian Volunteers, a program of the De La Salle Christian
Brothers in the Lasallian Region of North America, provides dedicated, well trained volunteers
for one or more years of service to schools and agencies of the Brothers whose mission is
to serve the poor. Acting out of faith, rooted in the Gospel, and sharing community with the
Brothers and other Lasallians, the volunteers empower the poor by personalized service
primarily through education.
VISION
We will be an expanding movement of volunteers, alumni and friends
serving the poor in association with the De La Salle Christian Brothers and sharing community and faith in the tradition of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. LVs will transform the lives of
impoverished children and families in all Lasallian ministries to the poor nationwide that request our help. To be effective in their outreach, current volunteers will benefit from the most
appropriate training and support network possible. Formed spiritually during their service
years, alumni will continue in the Lasallian mission to the poor. We will continually develop
appropriate structures for cultivating among all our members service to the poor, community
and faith. The Lasallian Volunteers movement will accompany the Brothers as they return to
their founder’s mission to the poor and form effective communities that make this possible.

When I was in grad school I taught at a public school in
Manhattan. There were a lot of parts of it that were really
awesome and helped me grow immensely as an educator.
But over that year I felt like something was missing.
I loved the kids and really enjoyed the content that I was
teaching, but I didn’t feel like I belonged in comparison
to my years as an LV at San Miguel School in Tulsa, OK.
What I realized was missing was the faith and community that was such a crucial part of my experience in Tulsa. Thankfully those elements are very present at Cristo
Rey in Brooklyn, NY, where I currently work. Faith and
community are a huge part of why this has been a second
home to me over the past three years.

When I joined Lasallian Volunteers I was not sure what
I truly was being called to do. I knew I enjoyed working
with youth and had flirted with the idea of pursuing a
career in education, but I was far from certain. In fact, my
initial request was to work in a campus ministry setting or
in a student services role.
Thankfully there were other plans in store for me and I
spent two years teaching middle school social studies at
San Miguel. It was during that time that I truly learned
of my passion for urban education and the experience has
been a guide for my career path since.
I think we can all agree that although education is incredibly rewarding, it is not necessarily a low stress career.
I have stayed up late nights, given up weekends for retreats
and service projects, and on a daily basis I depend on a
group of 17 year olds to define whether or not a lesson is
successful.
There have been many times that I can relate to St. La
Salle in saying that if I had seen my entire path when I
started on my vocational journey, then I might not have
had the courage to pursue it at all. It is at those moments
I think of the words of the people I met through the Lasallian Volunteers: whether it is Brother Chris Baker telling me to pray over difficult students or Principal Anne
Edwards reminding me of the importance of laughing at
myself and situations, the experiences and connections I
made while an LV have served as a sustaining force during
my vocational journey.

From the Desk of Chris Swain (04-06)
Regional Coordinator for Lasallian Vocation Ministry
In reflecting on my vocational journey, the experience I had as a
Lasallian Volunteer played a foundational role in recognizing how
God calls me through others for others.
Like many Lasallians, the founding story of St. John Baptist de La
Salle and the first Brothers resonates with my own experience, particularly the movement down a path I may not have foreseen at the
beginning. At present, that movement has taken shape in my new
role as Regional Coordinator for Lasallian Vocation Ministry, being
charged to promote Lasallian vocation in its diversity of expressions,
especially to the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Part of my new ministry has been the privilege of walking with current Lasallian Volunteers. It has been both humbling and inspiring
to witness their service advancing the Lasallian educational mission
across the United States.
The Rule of the Brothers offers “firsthand experience of the poor
through voluntary service, and living and working with them, offers
young people the opportunity to understand the value of a vocation
and the service of others.”
The value of a vocation discerned through voluntary service is
expressed not only through educational ministry, but also through
single, married and ordained and vowed religious life, especially
as Brothers of the Christian Schools. We can all give
thanks for our personal vocational journey rooted in
our shared Lasallian charism and mission.
I am struck that over 700 women and men are alums
of Lasallian Volunteers and of those 20% work in Lasallian ministries while many others continue working
with underserved youth in a variety of settings.
Through their year of service, each LV is given the opportunity to
reflect not so much from the perspective of what am I called to do?
but rather, from the perspective of who am I called to serve?
Grounded in our mission and values of faith, service and community, we are invited to the understanding that to be Lasallian
is to have a vocation, and also that the entire people of God is
responsible for awakening vocations in the Church.
Each of us are invited to accompany and invite young people into
experiences of faith, service and community, and to affirm their gifts
and talents to provide a setting in which life’s meaning is understood
as a personal call to serve the community. May we all be challenged
to invite and accompany young people in this way, that we may
continue to be blessed with Lasallian vocations in all their forms.
Living the Values Beyond Lasallian Volunteers
CARRIE DAVIS (96-00)
How has your Lasallian vocation to live the values of
faith, service and community taken shape over time?
It used to be that living out a life of faith, service and community
were wrapped into one all-consuming experience—Lasallian Volunteers. You live where you work, where you pray, and where you
eat. Now that I am married and a mother of a three-year-old, I find
that I am still able to incorporate those values into different aspects
of my life. I no longer live in community, but I find community
among my work colleagues and my play date mom friends. I no
longer participate in community prayer each morning and evening,
but I experience it at church and with my young families church
group. I am not a long term volunteer but I’ve found a way to serve
through my educational vocation as a middle school teacher for 14
years, and now as a coordinator of the Lasallian Service Internship
program at Saint Mary’s College.
How was the LV experience a foundation for your continued deepening of your vocation over time?
I knew from my first year as an LV that I wanted to be involved

in the Lasallian mission for the rest of my life, and I am so fortunate that has been the case thus far. There are few things that I am
surer about than that I love the Brothers, their tradition, and how
the mission continues to manifest itself differently as it constantly
strives to meet the needs of the people it serves. I am honored to
work alongside the Brothers and my fellow Lasallian partners, and
to have been invited to become more deeply knowledgeable and
involved in the mission through opportunities such as LLI (now
Johnston Institute) and as a member of the district mission council.
I am more sure than ever that this is where I am meant to be!
How has your LV experienced shaped your vocation
as an educator?
As an LV at San Miguel, Back of the Yards in Chicago, I had my
first experience as a middle school teacher. And I quickly learned
it is so much more than teaching math, English, etc. It is teaching
self-esteem, perseverance, social skills - and being a cheerleader as
they try, fail, and try again. It is being a coach to a team that wins
no games, yet going out for a celebratory dinner at the end of the
season anyway. And so much more. I find that in my current role
instructing college students, that most of the same principles apply.
Of course, I have to hold students to high academic standards, but
am also interested in their spiritual and personal growth and I want
them to know that through how I interact with them.
What from your LV experience continues to nourish
your vocation?
I think that many of the relationships I built during my time as
an LV have done the most to nourish my vocation. Many of those
people with whom I lived, worked, and prayed are not geographically near to me—although I am lucky that some are - but that
community of people (almost 20 years later!) continues to inspire
and support me.

An implicit agreement binds communal life for Lasallian Volunteers.
Despite the dishes left in the sink from the dinner prepared after a long,
stressful day, the prayer that persisted just a little longer than patience
demands, the only community TV tuned to a football game when everybody knows it’s time for Keeping up with the Kardashians, LVs know
that more than the individual is at stake—more than our good intentions and selfish motives, more than success and missteps. For my year of
service during the 2011-2012 school year, and certainly for every LV I’ve
ever met, self-sacrifice in the pursuit of something greater than ourselves
motivated every day’s toils and joys.
That’s a powerful thing. Small wonder, then, that quite a few LV alumni have chosen to continue their lives in a smaller community: since the
program’s founding, some 60 former volunteers have walked down the
aisle with a fellow LV. In the words of Chris Giangregorio (02-04), marriage is “about putting the needs of others before your own.” His wife
Kristen (02-04) agrees. “We take care of each other. Our commitment to
each other is like our commitment to the mission.” The vocation of marriage, like our one-to-two years of service, is a commitment to something
greater than oneself, a daring step toward solidarity in Christ. Sharing
that sense of purpose with a man or woman formed in the LV experience
can only render a stronger partnership.

Lasallian Volunteers
Celebrating 1,000 years of service
Orientation is a 10 day experience that
prepares and energizes volunteers for
the upcoming year of service. It builds a
foundation for the three core values of
faith, service and community.
Orientation includes sessions like: community life, peace and justice,
cultural awareness and diversity, introduction to St. John Baptist
de La Salle, Lasallian spirituality, the Lasallian charism today, the
Catholic Mass, and multiple prayer workshops and experiences.
Other topic areas also offered include: professionalism, supervisor/
supervisee relationships, lesson planning, classroom management,
social services, tutoring, campus ministry, mentoring, elementary
school, middle school, and high school aged learners. Additionally,
time is spent on details like program procedures, insurance concerns,
and related topics.
