HOUSE SALES IN GTA ROBUST
18.4% increase in sales in June
compared to same period last year
TORONTO: Toronto Real Estate Board President Mark McLean
announced that Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® repor ted
11,992 sales through TREB's MLS® System in June 2015. This
result represented a new record for the month of June and an 18.4 per
cent increase over the June 2014 result of 10,132.
"As I begin my term as TREB President, I think it is impor tant
to point out that our region continues to grow in response to
our diverse economic, ethnic and cultural bases. The GTA
consistently receives international accolades as one of the
best places in the world to live and do business. As the
number of households grow, many of them will take advantage
of the diversity of affordable home ownership oppor tunities
that exist in Toronto and the surrounding areas," said Mr.
McLean.
Selling prices were up markedly on a year-over-year basis in
June, for all major home types. The MLS® Home Price Index

MARKHAM - The all-new 2016 Honda HR-V subcompact
crossover arrives at Honda dealerships ahead of the originally
announced on-sale date of July 10. Its blend of SUV-like versatility with a car-like drive wrapped in bold exterior styling puts
the HR-V in a leadership position in one of the fastest growing
segments in Canada.
Available in LX, EX and EX-L Navi trims, the 2016 HR-V is
powered by a highly refined and efficient 1.8-litre 4-cylinder 16valve SOHC i-VTEC® engine producing a peak 141 horsepower
and 127 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is paired with one of two
efficient and responsive Honda transmissions, a seamless and
spor ty continuously variable transmission (CVT), available on
all models, or an engaging, shor t-shifting 6-speed manual
transmission, available on LX and EX models with 2WD.
The HR-V also targets class-leading safety ratings and features
Honda's next-generation Advanced Compatibility Engineeringā„¢
(ACEā„¢) body structure for enhanced frontal collision protection.
The car has an attractive design that lends it a spor ty look and
priced to fit any pocket. It is more solid- and substantial-feeling
than that the Fit Subcompact. The interior is pretty wide with the
windshield right there.
(HPI) Composite Benchmark was up by 8.9 per cent in comparison to June 2014. The average selling price was up by 12.3 per
cent over the same period to $639,184.
High-end homes have accounted for a greater share of overall
transactions this year compared to last year. This is the key
reason why the average selling price has increased at a greater
annual rate than the MLS® HPI Composite Benchmark.
"It is encouraging to see that new listings have edged upward
so far this year, as homeowners have reacted to strong home
price growth and have looked to take advantage of increased
equity in their homes. However, the annual rate of sales growth
continues to far outstrip listings growth, which means that there
remains a lot of willing buyers in the marketplace who haven't
found a home that meets their needs. As long as this situation
persists, expect home prices to trend strongly upward," said
Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis.

TRY HOMEMADE SCRUBS DURING MONSOON
New Delhi (IANS) Regular exfoliation helps to remove excessive oil and dead skin cells. So gear up to explore kitchen ingredients like oatmeal, milk and more for glowing skin in monsoon season, says Blossom
Kochhar, chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies.
Kochhar, a pioneer in the Indian beauty and cosmetic industry, shares how to make your own scrubs at home:
* Take crushed oatmeal and mix it with a small amount of milk. Make it into a paste and use it to exfoliate your skin. Apply and scrub it with dry finger tips for two to three minutes and leave it on
for 10 minutes. Then rinse it off.
* Make a paste by mixing sandalwood powder in orange peel and Fuller's Ear th (multani mitti). The paste will help in exfoliating dead skin cells, and bring a glow to the skin.
* Prepare a homemade scrub by mixing two tablespoons of baking soda, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder, juice of half a lemon and five tablespoons of honey. Apply the paste and rinse off after five minutes.
Make sure not to use it more than twice a week as over usage of baking soda can harm the skin.
* Detoxification of the skin is essential during monsoon season as it prevents allergies, puffiness and skin diseases. Rather than using harsh soaps that have a drying effect, make your own special powder.
Mix equal amounts of green gram powder and Bengal gram powder and half the quantity of fenugreek seeds. Prepare a paste by mixing all these in rosewater and apply the paste generously on the entire body.
The method deeply cleanses and refreshes the body.
* Mix together Fuller's Ear th, gram flour and sandalwood powder in equal quantities. Store in an air tight container. For applying, mix one tablespoon of the powder in water to make a paste. Apply evenly on
the face and leave it on to dry then rinse with cold water. The homemade face mask will help remove flakes and dust.

HOW TO TAKE CARE OF SILVER
JEWELLERY IN HUMIDITY
New Delhi (IANS) Silver jewellery needs extra care
in monsoon as it has a tendency to turn black. Try to
store it away from humidity and polish it well with a
soft cotton cloth. To prevent silver jewellery from getting tarnished, Ashutosh Sharma, designer and managing director of Shreem Jeweller, has shared easy tips.
* Storage: The more moist the climate, the faster it tarnishes. To keep your silver shining bright, store silver
jewellery in a cool and dry place as exposure to air will
tarnish it. It is advisable not to store multiple
jewellery pieces in the same bag as silver is a soft metal, so the individual
pieces can scratch each other. Just
make sure that the storage area has
low humidity. You can also place a
piece of chalk or a container of silica
gel in the storage area to minimise
tarnish as they useful in absorbing
moisture in the air.
* Avoid exposure: Exposure to humidity,
cer tain acids and cosmetics such as lotions
and per fume or contact with rubber bands can
cause tarnish due to the existence of sulphur in
the rubber band. Some of the household items like
mayonnaise, eggs, mustard and onions contain sulphur.
So, it's a good idea to remove silver jewellery while doing
household chores. Make sure to avoid wearing any silver
metal jewellery piece when you go for swimming and sunbathing
as direct sunlight also causes silver to tarnish.
* Homemade cleaning style: You can clean your silver jewellery just by using ingredients from your
kitchen. Dip it in warm soapy water and clean it using a soft brush and then thoroughly rinse it under
running water. After this, dry it with soft towel or a clean damp cloth.
* Polishing: Polish it with a soft cotton or muslin cloth regularly.

UNIVERSAL FLU VACCINE
COMES A STEP CLOSER
New York, (IANS) In a major step towards a single flu vaccine
that is effective against a broad range of the flu viruses, researchers have identified a strategy to improve existing vaccines against this ever-mutating virus. It may be possible to
harness a previously unknown mechanism within the immune
system to create more effective and efficient vaccines against
this virus which may ultimately result in a vaccine that provides life long immunity against flu infections, the results said.
Current flu vaccines are only must to be given yearly, there is
no guarantee the strains against which they protect will be the
ones circulating once the season arrives. "While the conventional flu vaccine protects only against specific strains, usually
three of them, by including modified antibodies within the vaccine it may be possible to elicit broad protection against many
strains simultaneously," said senior study author Jeffrey
Ravetch, professor at Rockefeller University in the US.
"We believe these results may represent a preliminary step
toward a universal flu vaccine, one that is effective against a
broad range of the flu viruses." The new strategy revolves around
antibodies, and immune proteins that target specific foreign
proteins, called antigens. One end of the antibody latches on to
an antigen, the other end, called the Fc region, binds to immune
cells and helps coordinate the immune response.

TYPES OF SKIRTS YOU SHOULD
HAVE IN YOUR WARDROBE
New Delhi (IANS) Skir ts have always been a summermonsoon favourite with most women because of their
versatility and comfor t, but choose it right according to your
shape, mood an occasion. An A-line skir t sits snugly at the
waist and a pencil skir t is a fitted skir t that clings to the
body and follows its natural shape, says an exper t.
Here are five types of essential skir ts shared by a Myntra
LookGood Advisor:
* Shor t skir t: Sequins, lace or leather, there's no dear th of
variety for this number. Whether it's the peak of summer or
the middle of winter, a denim skir t is one of those allseason skir ts that you can wear throughout the year.
* The demure A-line: An A-line skir t sits snugly at the waist
and gradually widens towards the hem. Not only does it
highlight the smallest par t of your waist, it also flares out at
the hip, minimising the width of the lower half of your body.
* Full skir t or maxi skir t: A full skir t or a circle skir t is
snug at the waist and widens dramatically at the ankles.
Fuller than an A-line skir t, it is equally flattering for women
with a relatively heavier bottom and this one's great also for days
when your heart wants to go the boho way.
* Bell-shaped skir t: The bell-shaped skir t, as the name
implies, resembles an inver ted bell. It is typically made
from heavier fabrics that can hold the shape of the skir t.
The flounced skir t can be paired with a fitted top that
accentuates your waist.
* Feline pencil skir t: A pencil skir t is a fitted skir t that
clings to the body and follows its natural shape. If you're
an hourglass (cur vy, with a well-defined waist), you will
look fantastic in pencil skir ts. A simple black pencil skir t
is per fect for lending you a slim and structured look for
office.
EXTRACURRICULAR SPORTS
MAKE KIDS MORE ATTENTIVE
Toronto, (IANS) Regular, structured extra-curricular spor ts help
children develop self-regulation and stay focused in the classroom as they grow up, says a study. "By the time they reached
the fourth grade, kids who played structured spor ts were identifiably better at following instructions and remaining focused in
the classroom," said lead researcher Linda Pagani from the
University of Montreal.
"There is something specific to the spor ting environment - perhaps the unique sense of belonging to a team to a special group
with a common goal - that appears to help kids understand the
impor tance of respecting the rules and honoring responsibilities," Pagani said.
The researchers worked with information provided by parents
and teachers to compare kindergar teners' activities with their
classroom engagement as they grew up. The researchers reviewed the data on 2,694 children who were born in Quebec,
Canada between 1997 and 1998. "We found that those children
who were specifically involved in team spor ts at kindergar ten
scored higher in self-regulation by time they reached four thgrade." The researchers believe that spor ting activities and attention skills go hand in hand and can be addressed simultaneously in school planning. The study appeared in the American
Journal of Health Promotion.

POOR SLEEP MAY MAKE YOU
MORE IMPULSIVE
New York, (IANS) Sleep deprivation may put you at increased
risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, inattentiveness and
questionable decision-making, says a study. The researchers
found that poor sleep habits can have a negative effect on selfcontrol, which presents risks to individuals' personal and professional lives.
"Our study explored how sleep habits and self-control are interwoven and sleep habits and self-control may work together to
affect a person's daily functioning," said one of the study authors June Pilcher, professor at Clemson University in the US.
"Exercising self-control allows one to make better choices when
presented with conflicting desires and oppor tunities. That has
far-reaching implications to a person's career and personal life."
Poor sleep habits, which include inconsistent sleep times and
not enough hours of sleep, can also lead to health problems,
including weight gain, hyper tension and illness.Studies have
found that sleep deprivation decreases self-control but increases
hostility in people, which can create problems in the workplace
and at home," Pilcher said. "Many aspects of our daily lives can
be affected by better-managed sleep and self-control capacity."
"Improved health and worker per formance are two potential
benefits, but societal issues such as addictions, excessive gambling and over spending could also be more controllable when
sleep deficiencies are not interfering with one's decision making," Pilcher said. The study appeared in the journal Frontiers in
Human Neuroscience.
How to style up for college life
London, (IANS) Are you finding it tough to tackle the scorching heat? Lets take a look at simple tips from exper ts on
staying cool during summer.
"Closing windows and doors during the hottest par ts of the
day to stop the hot air from outside entering and also closing
cur tains, blinds and shutters during the day in order to
minimize solar gain inside the building," said Chris Goodier
from School of Civil and Building Engineering, Loughborough
University. "Open windows and doors, cur tains, blinds and
shutters when the temperature drops outside in order to let
the cooler air in, usually at night," Goodier said.
This helps lower the core temperature of the building overnight which will then help keep the room temperature lower
the following day. If you are concerned about how to keep
your kids cool and hydrated, give them good food. "There are
some great foods that you can give your children to help
boost their water intake on hot days," said Emma Haycraft
from the School of Spor t, Exercise and Health Sciences.
"Fruits, such as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and
watermelon all contain lots of water and are a summery,
healthy snack. If your little ones are tired of drinking water
offer them ice cubes instead, or make your own ice lollies
from fruit and vegetables. Yoghur t also contains more than
80 percent water and is packed full of calcium so great for
young children," Haycraft said.
Other foods good to eat in hot weather are cucumber,
tomatoes, celery and butternut squash, which all have high
water content. If you want a good sleep at night stick to
your routine. "Comfor t and routine are the guardians of
good sleep," said sleep exper t professor Kevin Morgan.
Here are his tips for sleep management in very hot
weather:
"
Try to keep to your usual bed time and routines do the things you normally do before bed. Take sensible
precautions to ensure your bedroom is as cool as it can be
at night - draw the cur tains and close the windows against
the sun during the day, but open the windows at night.
"
Reduce your bedding - but remember that however
hot it is in your bedroom your body temperature will fall
during the night so keep covers handy.
New Delhi, (IANS) If you want to put your best foot forward with
your fashion sense in college, but have a limited budget, take care of how
you shop. Go for unbranded products and fetch online deals.
Sheena Agarwaal, director, Urbanista Image Consultancy, has shared some
tips on how to look fashionable without burning a hole in your pocket.
* Define your style: Looking fabulous with scarce resources is
very much possible. You have to define your fashion style. You can
meet all the fashion standards without spending on such extravagant things. Moreover, you have to understand that using more
fashion stuff at a time is not the key to looking fabulous.
* Chalking out your fashion budget: Money is yours and so is the
choice, but I just want to advise you to allocate your finance for the
purchase of things that you really need. Also prefer quality stuff that
can last for at least a few months. We recommend that you look at
every fashion pick as an investment. * Choose unbranded things
over branded: Irrespective of whether you love branded clothing
stuff or not, you have to understand that wearing named brand
clothing is not the only way to look good. Look for quality. And you
can find them even on the streets if you have the eye for it. Look
around, there are some other companies which produce high
class clothing at a much more reasonable price. All we need
to realise is that we can live without brands.

HEADSET THAT TURNS YOUR
PALM INTO KEYBOARD!
New York, (IANS) What if the palm of your hand can work as a keyboard? A Google patent aims to turn the
skin on your palm into a vir tual keyboard. It describes a Google Glass-like headset that beams an
interactive vir tual keyboard directly onto a person's palm. A camera in the headset tracks the
movement of the fingers to know which keys are being pressed before feeding the information to a
website or an app, Daily Mail repor ted.
The patent was filed in June 2012 and was awarded to Google early this week. The present application discloses systems and methods for a vir tual input device, in one example, the vir tual input
device includes a tiny projector and a camera. In the vir tual keyboard, numbers could be assigned
to a forefinger, while symbols could be assigned to a middle finger. Alternatively, letters could be
plotted across the fingers and palm from top to bottom.
Users would then use their thumb to "press" the various keys on both hands. The projector can be
mounted on an arm of a pair of eyeglasses and the camera may be mounted on an opposite arm of
the eyeglasses. The users can also watch videos on the palm of their hand rather than having to
hold a device in front of them. The patent also suggests that the device could project a trackpad onto
a body par t which would allow for finer control.

Live in serenity in Vastu-perfect home
New Delhi, (IANS) The interior of your home plays a crucial
role in its serenity. By simply making a few changes in your
home, you can definitely live peacefully and with more
happiness, says an exper t. Prasad Kulkarni, CEO, MahaVastu,
Mumbai, suggests how:
* Wind chimes: The common decorative items in most homes
can be placed in nor th, nor thwest and west vastu zones. In
the nor th, you can place a wind chime made up of five rods;
this will attract new oppor tunities in your career. A seven-rod
wind chime in the west brings overall gains for you.
* Location of dressing table: Placement of your dressing table
in the right direction can help in improving your relationships.
It should be kept adjacent to your bedroom, but avoid placing
it on the southern wall in the southwest zone because then it
will increase expectations from your spouse, which will
create problems in the relationship. Ideally, placement of the
dressing table should be decided keeping in mind the effect
of mirror in Vastu.
* Statues or idols or paintings of Buddha: If you have a
figure of Lord Buddha, place it in the nor theast Vastu zone of
your house. According to the directions of alchemy in
Mahavastu, nor th-east zone is responsible for your connectivity with yourself. When you place a symbol of spiritually
elevated person like Lord Buddha, it sends a message to
your house that you want to get connected with your higher
self. Accordingly, the space energies star t programming
your subconscious mind and you feel connected. The
connectivity in turn facilitates new ideas, creativity and
clarity of your mind.
* Pair of white horses: You can place a sculpture of a pair of
white horses in the nor thwest zone of your home. It will
facilitate financial suppor t, like a bank loan, for you.

EATING CITRUS FRUITS MAY
INCREASE MELANOMA RISK
New York, (IANS) Frequent consumption of citrus fruits -- whole
grapefruit and orange juice -- may be associated with an increased risk of melanoma, a type of skin cancer, says a large
study. Analysing dietary patterns among more than 100,000 people
in the US, the researchers found that melanoma risk was 36
percent higher in people who consumed citrus fruit or juice at
least 1.6 times daily compared to those who consumed them
less than twice per week.
Consumption of grapefruit and oranges was not associated with
an increased risk for any other non-skin cancers.
"While our findings suggest that people who consume large
amounts of whole grapefruit or orange juice may be at increased
risk for melanoma, we need much more research before any
concrete recommendations can be made," said lead study author Shaowei Wu, postdoctoral research fellow at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.
"At this time, we do not advise that people cut back on citrus -but those who consume a lot of grapefruit and/or orange juice
should be par ticularly careful to avoid prolonged sun exposure,"
Wu noted. The apparent link between melanoma and citrus fruit
consumption may be due to high levels of substances called
furocoumarins found in citrus fruits, the researchers pointed out.
Prior research showed that furocoumarins make the skin more
sensitive to sunlight, including to melanoma-causing ultraviolet
(UV) rays. The new study involved over 100,000 men and women
in the US. Over a follow-up period of up to 26 years, 1,840 study
par ticipants were diagnosed with melanoma.
Higher overall citrus fruit consumption (the total number of servings of whole grapefruit, whole oranges, and juices from those
fruits) was associated with increased risk of malignant melanoma in both men and women. The association was strongest
for grapefruit, followed by orange juice. The study was published
online in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
EVEN TODDLERS LOVE TO USE IPAD
New York, (IANS) Small babies are quite adept at using and
mastering the latest technology, so much so that many toddlers
can use an iPad when they are just one, and most of them master the
gadget by their second birthday, reveals a new study.
Researchers from University of Iowa analysed hundreds of YouTube
videos of babies trying and quickly mastering the technology.
They found half of toddlers can use an iPad when they are just one, with
90 percent mastering the gadget by their second birthday, Daily Mail
reported. The researchers admit they were stunned by the results.
"By age two, 90 percent of the children in the videos had a moderate
ability to use a tablet," Juan Pablo Hourcade, associate professor of
computer science was quoted as saying.
"Just over 50 percent of 12 to 17-month-old children in the videos had a
moderate ability," Hourcade said.
Hourcade and his colleagues defined "moderate ability' as needing
help from an adult to access apps but being able to use them while
displaying some difficulty with basic interactions.
