2012 Annual Report - Lee Carlson Center
. A Path to Healing ..... Lee Carlson Center FOR MENTAL HEALTH & WELL-BEING 2012 Annual Report ™ OFFERING HOPE AND HEALING Dear Friends, In 2012, we continued to offer exceptional and affordable mental health services to the 3,800+ clients we served. More than half of those helped were school aged children and youth. We’re proud to say we’re the only community mental health provider in the areas we serve that sees children of all ages. We’re also one of the few providers to offer an income based sliding fee scale with no cap on the number of Medicaid/Medical Assistance clients we see. In fact, in 2012 we provided services for free or at a significant discount to more than 2,400 individuals and families. Key collaborations included: • A partnership with CornerHouse in Minneapolis to offer mental health services to children who have been sexually or physically abused. • Working with Head Start of Anoka and Washington County on their Fatherhood Partnership Project. • A wellness initiative with Allina Health to teach our Bridgeview members how to lead healthier lives by understanding the connection between mind and body. In terms of outreach and community education, we made over 35 presentations and attended 50 community events to promote our services. We also produced and aired a new episode of our cable TV show “Putting a Face on Mental Health.” The show, which aired on North Metro TV, Channel 15 and is fed to other local cable stations, featured clients, staff, community advocates and other mental health professionals with a focus on supporting friends and family members living with mental illness. On the fundraising front, we broadened community support by redesigning our Annual RoofRaiser where ‘teams’ of community leaders pledged to sleep on the roof of BoB’s Produce in Fridley if their team did not raise $5,000. The community showed their support by forming 11 teams and raising $30,000 to support our school-based programs. Support also continued to grow for Bridgeview as we also held our 2nd Annual Breakfast for Bridgeview where our theme was “Whole. Minding the Body. Healing the Mind.” In 2014, we’ll celebrate 35 years of providing high quality mental health services to Anoka County and surrounding areas. Our founder and inspirational leader, Lee Carlson, is never far from our thoughts. Although she died in 2003, her vision and her passion lives on in the work we do every day. To our many friends and advocates, thank you for keeping Lee’s spirit alive by supporting the work we do. Gratefully, Kathy Samilo Executive Director 2012 Highlights Over 200 attendees enjoyed food donated by Key's Café June 14, 2012 – Murzyn Hall, Columbia Heights Supporters Mary Kahle (former staff member) and Mandy Meisner from Financial One Credit Union. Each team was challenged to raise $5,000 during the months of August & September. Our combined goal of $30,000 was met. Local dignitaries helped by reaching out to individuals and businesses in their communities. Roof Raiser Raising $ and awareness for mental health Our valued RoofRaiser host and partner, BoB’s Produce Ranch in Fridley RoofRaiser Team representing Ham Lake, Centennial area, and Fridley. The 2012 core team: Anoka County Board Chair Rhonda Sivarajah, State Senator Pam Wolf, Spring Lake Park Mayor Cindy Hansen, State Senate candidate Dale Helm, Columbia Heights Mayor Gary Peterson, Fridley Mayor Scott Lund, Business leader Jolynn Erickson, and former Spring Lake Park Mayor and RoofRaiser founder Bob Nelson Barbara Carlson, RoofRaiser Advocate, who also provided musical entertainment with her band, Culver’s Jammers. 2012 Highlights Lee Carlson is a place where youth and families can turn to when they need help. Our Mission To provide exceptional and affordable mental health services for families, children, youth, and adults in our community. Our Story For over 30 years, Lee Carlson Center for Mental Health & Well-Being has been a beacon of hope for people of all ages who are coping with emotional and behavioral health issues. The Center is the primary provider of mental health services in Anoka County and surrounding areas, seeing more than 3,800 individuals and families each year. Lee Carlson, a Registered Nurse, founded the Center in 1979 with a focus on helping at-risk youth through support groups in area schools. The school-based peer support program remains a cornerstone of our services, providing counseling, advocacy, education, and peer mediation referrals to schools in the northern suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Over the years, we’ve expanded our services to meet the changing needs of our community. At our main clinic in Fridley we offer: •Individual counseling for all ages •Group therapy • Marriage and family counseling • Psychiatric services for adolescents and children • Play therapy for children • Psychological testing and assessments Lee Carlson Center remains one of the few providers in the area to use an income based sliding fee scale for individuals and families with inadequate insurance and limited financial resources who reside in Anoka County. PROGRAMS We also offer several programs that are unique in the county and meet a significant community need. Bridgeview Community Support Program This is Anoka County’s only psycho-social outreach program for adults living with serious and persistent mental illness. Its many life-enriching programs sustain and enhance the strengths of each participant. More than 400 adults and their families participate in Bridgeview’s support groups, social outings, and other activities. Members can also participate in Bridgeview’s award-winning art program. Membership is free and transportation is provided at no-cost to members residing in Anoka County. For families touched by domestic abuse This is Anoka County’s only family focused domestic abuse program. It’s designed to assist the batterer, their partner/spouse and children. Group and individual therapy, as well as aftercare are offered to adult men, women and adolescent participants. A Restorative Parenting program is also offered to men and women to help them rebuild broken bonds of trust in their families. Play therapy is used to help children cope with the trauma of domestic abuse. Of the more than 250 families served by our Domestic Abuse Program annually, most have household incomes below Anoka County’s median income. For at-risk youth We are the only not for profit mental and behavioral health service provider in Anoka County providing school based services. Varying from school to school, our school based services range from working with students who have severe to moderate special educational needs to providing prevention services. In total we are working with more than 1,500 students. They include more than 300 elementary, middle and high school students who are participating in our prevention and early intervention Peer Support Program. Demographics Who We Serve In 2012, we served over 3,800 clients coping with emotional health issues. Our primary focus remains Anoka County, but we continue to draw clients from Hennepin, Ramsey, and surrounding counties. Roughly 60% of our clients are between the ages of 15-22. We remain one of the few mental health providers in the northern suburbs who accepts uninsured and underinsured clients. Over 60% of those we help have insurance coverage through the State’s Medical Assistance Program or receive our services free or at very reduced rates.
