Master bathroom renovation, Portland, Oregon The desire for a personal spa in a colonial home is fulfilled when a guest bedroom is transformed into a state-of-the-art master bathroom. During some of the initial design meetings, the clients decided they wanted a urinal, in addition to a toilet, in the master bathroom suite. “Though you don’t often see a urinal in a residential setting, that was perfect for this project,” says Murray, “because Geberit makes a carrier for the urinal, and Duravit makes beautiful urinal fixtures that match their water closets. There isn’t a more cuttingedge look you can get with this application than by pairing a Geberit Concealed Tank and Carrier system with a Duravit fixture.” The Challenge Liz Murray, a prominent interior designer and space planner who has designed some of the Northwest’s finest homes, was approached by clients to remodel their colonial 1940s-style home in Portland, Oregon, with characteristics similar to their contemporary home in Brazil. ↑ Liz Murray, Interior Designer The objective was to remodel all three floors of the home to be more open and streamlined—with wall-hung cabinetry and sinks in all bathrooms—while retaining some of the vintage characteristics, such as the fireplace, windows, and hardwood floors. While Murray’s clients desired a spa-like master bathroom, it was equally important to make the home function more efficiently. “It’s always a challenge to take an older home with vintage attributes and give it a more open, streamlined design while having the two concepts blend well together,” says Murray. “Of course, you want to have form follow function, so it needed to look great but perform really well.” When Murray’s clients told her they really liked the look of wall hung, she asked them if they had wall-hung toilets in their Brazil home. When they told her they didn’t, but would love to have them in their Portland home, she knew exactly what she wanted to do. The Solution “Right away the light bulb went off that I could easily use the Geberit system with Duravit fixtures for a great way to address the bathrooms,” says Murray. “Geberit is the best on the market. It performs well year after year. I’ve specified the product because I can pair it nicely with other fixtures, including Duravit.” The Geberit system provides unlimited possibilities for bathroom design by hiding the toilet tank behind the wall and taking the plumbing fixtures off the floor. Bathroom design is transformed through the technology of in-wall components, allowing for unique style while improving reliability, performance, installation flexibility, and maintenance. “It was a very complex master bathroom project,” Murray recollects. “We had a 12½' x 14½' guest bedroom to work with that my clients didn’t need to use, so instead of remodeling the master bathroom in its current location, we used the guest bedroom for the new master bathroom. We wanted a symmetrical layout. It was a bit of a challenge to keep everything lined up so that your eye could move around the space really well.” With a little help from Geberit, Murray met the challenge, turning the guest bedroom into a state-of-the-art master bathroom suite. “We used a flat white paint for the walls that is really beautiful,” says Murray. “White and iridescent mosaic glass tiles with a handmade look provide added interest to the room. The heated flooring and walls feature mocha crème limestone tiles from Portugal in a larger 18-inch format. Matching counter slabs with the wall-hung cabinetry, sinks, and fixtures complete the look. It’s very spa-like.” Murray proposed adding separate rooms within the master bathroom suite, one for the urinal and one for the toilet. “The way the room is laid out, we didn’t have to change the entire floor plan,” Murray explains. “Around the corner in the room, we converted a small closet into the urinal room, and then created a small room for the toilet.” Since the Geberit system can be adjustable from 14 to 19 inches in height and adds about 5 inches of space in front of the toilet just by placing the tank behind the wall, it worked well for both the water closet and the urinal room. “My clients love it!” says Murray. “Everything works very well for them. They say it’s their dream home and they look forward to retiring there. Maybe it’s because, they said, they have plenty of space to use the bathroom together, without getting in each other’s way.” Geberit 2100 S.
