Eggs & Issues Breakfast
On Thursday, September 3 at Heroes Restaurant nearly 60 Chamber members
gathered for our annual “Eggs & Issues” Breakfast, sponsored by CenturyLink, to
hear updates from our local legislators.
Among several other topics, Senator David Pearce spoke about the legislation he
worked on regarding coverage for those suffering from eating disorders, a bill
brought forth thanks to the dedication of Coach John Culp, on behalf of his daughter Laura.
Representative Denny Hoskins addressed some of the challenges that have faced
the House of Representatives this past session, as well as the election of House
Speaker.
Representative Dean Dohrman spoke about HB 170 to create a Military Liaison for
the state, a role designed to preserve our state’s strong military tradition.
New members in attendance had
an opportunity to introduce themselves and say a few words about
their business or organization.
Clockwise from top are: Chris Medina of Homes for Heroes, Fr. Joe
Miller from Sacred Heart Parish
and Preschool, and Eva Rose
Zamora with Financial Education
Service.

Central Missouri Speedway will reach an historical milestone on Saturday, September 5th when the track hosts its 50th Modified Special
Payout Event since 1998. The big three summer holidays always
bring added excitement to the speedway for drivers and fans with
extra money and bragging rights on the line and this year’s Labor
Day weekend special events will add to the track’s legacy and contribution to Modified racing in the Greater Kansas City metro. The
weekend serves as the final night of action for the 2015 season.
This year, the Labor Day Weekend of events also serves as the final two race nights of the 2015 season.
USRA Modifieds headline the weekend action with a pair of $1,500-to-win main/$180-to-start events on Saturday the 5th and Sunday the 6th. The events are two separate programs featuring two complete payouts! In addition, Track Champions will be crowned on Saturday night for the Street Stock, B-Mod, and Pure Stock divisions while the Modified title will be decided Sunday night.
All Labor Day weekend information is easily accessible at www.centralmissourispeedway.net. Look for the
“Labor Day Weekend Race Info Headquarters” tab from the main page. There you will find a frequently asked
questions document, an event flyer, admission, race program, and car class payout information along with
much more general information about racing on both nights.
Pit Gates open at 4:30, Admission Gates open at 5, driver's pill draw cutoff is at 6:15 (no passing points awarded to driver if late draw), Drivers Meeting at 6:30, Hot Laps at 7, and Racing at 7:30! Special event pricing is in
effect for September 5th and 6th with General Admission Adults $15, Military/Students w/ID $12, Seniors 65
and over $12, Kids 6 to 12 years $5, all children 5 and under free! Permanently confined to wheelchair, free! All
weekend pit passes are $35.
CMS is located just past the round-a-bout on Hwy 13 three and a half miles north of Warrensburg, Missouri
from the junction of Highways 50 and 13. From the Interstate 70 Higginsville/Warrensburg Hwy 13 exit, the
track is located 12.5 miles south on Hwy 13.

The Birds of
Pertle
Springs
Missouri bird watching and feeding, often called Missouri birding, has quickly become the most popular
spectator sport in Missouri, second only to gardening as
Missouri's favorite outdoor pastime, according to the
River Valley Region Associ-a-tion. Of the over 800 species found in North America, over 400 different kinds of
birds have been identified in Missouri.
Improve your bird watching skills at Lifelong Learning’s
“Birds of Pertle Springs” program on Tuesday, Sept. 15
at 9:00 a.m. under the guidance of Kurt Dean, PhD and
assistant professor of Biology and Agriculture at
UCM. We will meet at Pertle Springs (first parking lot
on the left from the main entrance) for an easy hike
around the Pertle Springs grounds as we search for
birds. Bring your binoculars! In case of bad weather,
meet in UCM’s W. C. Morris Bldg, Room 118.

Answering the
Universal
Networking
Question
Guy Kawasaki shares great advice from Bill Reichert
of Garage on how to write compelling executive summaries. We're borrowing three of these nine
points because they are also great components for
answering that universal networking question, "So
what do you do?" Here are three ideas to consider
when answering the question:
PROBLEM: What's the problem your business solves
for others? SOLUTION: How do you solve this problem, and keep it short and simple? And of course,
Guy (or Walt) would ask--What’s your UNDERLYING
MAGIC? What makes your company and the people
special?
Our favorite visual is from Bill Reichert, "Avoid 'purple
farts'—adjectives that sound impressive but carry no
substance. 'Next generation' and ‘ dynamic' probably
don’t mean anything…Everybody thinks their software
is ‘intelligent' and ‘easy-to-use,' and everyone thinks
their financial projections are ‘conservative.' Explain
your company the way you would to a friend at a
cocktail party (after one drink, not five)."
End the E-Mail See-Saw
This September try
this solution for the
never-ending email
see-saw. Phil Simon,
author of "Message
Not Received: Why
Business Communication Is Broken And
How To Fix It" says, if
the person (or people) with whom you
are emailing needs more than three emails to complete, understand or agree on the communication,
pick up the phone or meet face-to-face.
Remember, there is a general negativity skew to
email. Your positive email is often seen as neutral by
the receiver and there is a tendency for your neutral
email to be thought of as negative. Turn over a new
leaf this autumn by instituting the Three-Email Solution and see what happens.
