Many of our members have
expressed curiosity about the
Jewish holidays and the origins
of our fall 2012 holiday hours.
All Jewish holidays begin in
the evening, because a Jewish
“day” begins and ends
at sunset.
Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year.
It is observed for two days — this year,
beginning on the evening of September
16. Unlike the secular New Year, the
Jewish New Year is a more solemn time
of reflection and self-assessment.
Yom Kippur means “Day of Atonement.”
It is the holiest and most solemn day of
the Jewish Year on which Jews refrain
from eating or drinking in order to
focus solely on atonement. This year,
Yom Kippur begins on the evening of
September 25.
Sukkot means “booths.” The festival of
Sukkot is observed for seven days and
commemorates the Israelites’ journey
in the desert from slavery in Egypt to
freedom in the Promised Land. Jews
commonly build and decorate “sukkot”
— small booths that remind them of
the temporary booths built by the
Israelites wandering in the desert. This
year, Sukkot begins on the evening of
September 30.
Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah
immediately follow the seven-day
festival of Sukkot. The two-day festival
of “Rejoicing in the Laws” celebrates
the completion of the annual reading of
the Torah. Simchat Torah concludes the
fall holiday season. This year, Shemini
Atzeret begins on the evening of
October 7, and Simchat Torah begins on
the evening of October 8.

Dear JCC Members and Friends,
We at the JCC work to fulfill our commitment to the values of Community (Kehilla), Charity (Tzedakah) and
making the world a better place (Tikkun Olam) in many ways. One of these ways is to expand our presence
in the Jewish and secular community through the enhancement and development of new and rewarding
relationships and partnerships. We are humbled by the commitment and camaraderie of our community! We
thought that you would be interested in learning about some of these partnerships. In an effort to bring you rich
cultural arts programs, collaborations and partnerships have been established with a myriad of organizations
including TYKEs Theatre, TheatreROCS, Cultural Classic, the Arts & Cultural Council for Greater
Rochester, PUSH Physical Theatre and Rochester Children’s Theatre. Through our Jewish Film Festival we
collaborated with Jewish Senior Life™, George Eastman House/Dryden Theatre, The Little Theater, The Reel
Mind Theatre and Film Series, Polish Film Festival and High Falls Film Festival.
We recently hosted an exhibition from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum entitled “Nazi
Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945.” This project became a community collaboration including the
Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, Temple B’rith Kodesh, Jewish Federation of Greater Rochester, Nazareth
College, Temple Sinai, WXXI, ImageOut, Mark Siwiec & Associates, Oasis Rochester, PFLAG, VisitRochester,
Brighton Memorial Library and Monroe Community College.
We are proud to be in our third year of providing physical education classes for eighth graders from the Urban
Choice Charter School and completing our third year of summer programs for approximately 50 foster
children through EnCompass. With our partnership with Upstate New York Families for Effective Autism
Treatment (UNYFEAT), parents and their children to come to the JCC each week for programs in the
In Zone.
Finally, we are extremely thrilled to announce our newest collaboration. Commencing this October, the JCC
and Jewish Family Service will establish a Family Resource Center on the Edgewood Campus of the JCC. In
keeping with the mission of both institutions, our primary goal is to create a program that promotes a more
age-integrated Jewish community by encouraging improved communication, understanding, and quality of life
among older adults, families and youth.
The Resource Center will provide counseling services, case management and programs designed to:
• Enhance opportunities for adults and youth to interact and learn from one another while fostering respect
between generations and appreciation of diversity;
• Arm teachers, counselors and families with tools to create safe and positive learning environments for JCC
children who struggle to learn, have developmental delays, or other special needs; and
• Afford senior adults and their caregivers with person-focused, coordinated programs and services designed to
enhance independence and wellness, including healthy eating habits through nutritional education, cooking
demonstrations and promoting of cooking clubs.
We will be sending you additional information about the Family Resource Center within the next couple of
months. As always we encourage your feedback and ideas about all of our programs and services.
Finally, as we approach 5773, the Jewish New Year, please accept our best wishes to you and your family for a
happy, healthy, prosperous and peaceful Shanah Tova!

Congratulations to the Employees of the Month!
MEGAN TAYLOR (May)
Megan took the initiative to train our Coffee Shop staff, which lead to better
customer service and consistent product preparation. She quickly covered an
opening shift and volunteers to work when needed. JCC members and staff alike
praise Megan for helping members in various ways, suggesting new Coffee Shop
offerings for customers, and so much more.
SUSAN LAROSA (June)
Susan has done an amazing job revamping the JCC website over the past few
months. The new site is beautifully designed, much more user-friendly, and jampacked with information on all of our programs and services. Susan continues to
market the JCC’s programs, classes, and events to our members and community
in the most innovative, efficient, and cost-effective ways through print, TV, and
social media. She has implemented twice-a-year open houses, established
Groupon accounts for JCC membership and camps, and provided area schools
with promotional materials.
EILEEN HAJDUK (July)
Eileen was very helpful in assisting the two-year-old lead teachers by creating
Teacher Work Schedules for their classrooms. She created a chart for staff to use
in order to see when teacher coverage was needed the most. Eileen was asked
by our Assistant Director to compile class lists for each room, outlining drop-off
and pick-up times. This project required plenty of work, but Eileen is the type of
person who is always happy to lend a helping hand!
Eat Well, Live Well for Healthy Blood Pressure
New JCC Program Promotes Health and Wellness
Research shows that one out of three adults in our community has high blood pressure. An
estimated 33 percent are at risk of developing this condition, which causes stroke, heart disease,
kidney disease, and other serious illnesses. Known as the “silent killer,” high blood pressure often
has no warning signs or symptoms and is a leading cause of death.
The concern about this serious illness prompted the formation of the Eat Well, Live Well for
Healthy Blood Pressure program. It is funded by the Wegman Family Charitable Foundation and
overseen by the Rochester Business Alliance (RBA) and Finger Lakes Health Systems Agency
(FLHSA). The program works with physician practices, businesses, faith-based organizations, and
community groups — including the JCC — to raise awareness and educate people about high
blood pressure, and also to provide free screenings.
Ruby Bowers, a JCC
employee, sings praises
of the Eat Well, Live
Well for Healthy Blood
Pressure program.
“I chose the program
because I needed to
become more aware
of my daily sodium
intake.” At Stage 2
hypertensive, she knew
that healthy changes
were necessary. Ruby
notes, “After learning
the basics of managing
my blood pressure,
reading nutrition
facts and choosing
low-sodium foods, I
now feel I have more
control over my blood
pressure.” Ruby’s blood
pressure is now at
Stage 1 and continues
to decrease!
“It’s great to work with health-minded community organizations like the JCC,” said Wade
Norwood, director of Community Engagement at FLHSA. “It’s thanks to our collaboration with
organizations like the JCC that we can make a difference to improve the health of people in
our community.”
The JCC joined Eat Well, Live Well in March of 2012 when it began offering classes designed
to help members achieve healthy blood pressure. Led by Phyllis Jackson, R.N., community
engagement specialist at FLHSA, the nine-session course informed participants about the lifestyle
choices that help control blood pressure, including stress reduction, diet, and regular exercise. A
JCC member, Sharon Stall, R.D., also provided counseling and support to participants.
Art Moore and his wife, Linda, participated in the first course. “I joined the group because Linda
twisted my arm,” said Moore. “I figured I knew as much as I needed to know about high blood
pressure. Boy, was I wrong!” The Moores found the small group setting ideal and were able
to apply what they learned to their daily lives. Their efforts have paid off: diagnosed with prediabetes, Linda was able to reverse the diagnosis in a few short months!
What is
Blood Pressure?
Blood pressure is the force of blood against the walls of the
arteries. It rises and falls throughout the day. Blood pressure
that stays elevated over time is called high blood pressure
or hypertension.
A blood pressure check will help determine if you have
normal blood pressure, prehypertension, or hypertension.
Many factors influence a person’s chance of having high blood pressure:
• Family history
• Ethnicity (more common among African Americans)
• Age (more common among older individuals)
• Weight
• Lack of physical activity
• Smoking
• Diet
• Alcohol
• Stress
More information about blood pressure health is available at eatwelllivewell.org.

Farash Foundation
supports the JCC’s
Programs and
Services
The JCC is honored to share that it has received
four very generous grants from the Max and Marian
Farash Charitable Foundation totaling $285,000, to
support a variety of programs this fiscal year. The
Foundation places its highest priority on endeavors
designed to transform the lives of individuals and
the work of organizations. In recognition of the
exceptional work that the JCC does the Foundation
is supporting the following programs:
• In partnership with Jewish Family Service, the
JCC will develop a Family Resource Center that will
serve to assist, educate and empower individuals,
families and all members of the community
by providing and coordinating comprehensive
resources and programs under one umbrella and
in a manner consistent with Jewish values. We will
create a warm and inviting space at the JCC that will
support the wide array of programs of the resource
center and where all ages feel comfortable.

• Through a generous grant to support the ongoing
efforts of the JCC’s Judaic Educator, the JCC
will continue to serve individuals and families of
all Jewish backgrounds and affiliations. The JCC
challenges itself to create and deliver programs that
impact Jewishly each and every Jewish member in a
way that is “just right”. (see p.4)
• By supporting cultural arts at the JCC in 201213, the Center is able to provide the high quality
programming delivered to the Jewish and non
Jewish communities alike. A generous grant for
cultural arts will support the CenterStage Season
and the 20th Anniversary of the Lane Dworkin

Leaving
a Legacy
Leon Posen and Bernie Newmark had little in common
during life, but after death, their shared values became
clear; both left significant bequests to the JCC.
Leon, a holocaust survivor, was a modest man of
modest means. He came to Rochester in the 50’s and
worked as a delivery man for a grocer on Park Ave
before working at the Rochester Public Market. He was
active in synagogue life and in Jewish causes.
Predeceased by his wife, Paula, he is survived by a
community of friends. The
concept of Jewish space and
Jewish life was very important
to him. His significant bequest
to the Center ensures that a
vibrant Jewish community with
Leon at the Rochester Public Market. Jewish life and Jewish space
remain available to this and the
next generation.
Bernie was a bomber pilot of B-24’s during World War
II. He was very proud that his entire crew
returned safe and intact after each of
the 30+ missions he flew. After the war
he continued to educate the community
about his experiences and the war. He
was an avid water and snow skier who
taught countless people the joys of
water skiing. Known as the “Pied Piper” Bernie Newmark
of Canandaigua Lake, Bernie was active
in the “Bay Rats” - Aqua Snow Skiers. Bernie was also
well known
as the host of Bernie and the Moose Ski Report on
WHAM. His love of the lake and passion for the water
translated into a significant bequest for Camp Seneca
Lake, preserving camp and the opportunity for children
to enjoy the lake’s resources for future generations.
