Pittenger Ex-Officio NationalAquariumFoundation Mr. Neal D. Borden I joined the Aquarium in the hectic days leading up to our opening in 1981. At the time, we were creating something brand new, and aquariums were largely unknown as attractions. In the intervening 30 years, our success has inspired many other cities to build aquariums in their own urban renewal plans. Now the National Aquarium is two venues in two cities, and is known around the world for beautiful displays, our commitment to conservation and our education programs. It has been personally and professionally gratifying to work with a great team of colleagues (paid and unpaid) and an honor to steer this organization. A leadership search is well underway, and I will remain at the helm until the Aquarium’s new executive director is named. the National Aquarium you are creating lasting memories of your own with your loved ones—of times together among our exhibits, of volunteering at a planting event, or perhaps of joining the animal rescue team on a beach to release a rehabilitated seal or turtle. The Aquarium offers so many ways to help our aquatic world, and I invite you to explore the options that membership opens for you. Watermarks readers, you’ve journeyed with us from ocean depths to rain forest tree tops, interacting with our cast of 16,000 colorful characters; witnessed the heart-warming release of previously injured animals to their aquatic homes; learned important lessons about the health of aquatic ecosystems; and come along for the ride as we restored, protected and preserved the Chesapeake Bay watershed. CenterforAquaticLifeandConservation Mr. Neal D. Borden With blossoms all around us and warmth in the air, spring brings a feeling of renewal, change and fresh beginnings. As we look back at 2010 and ahead to a summer of events celebrating our 30th anniversary, there is change in store for me: this will be the last annual report I will have the pleasure of sharing with you. After 15 years as executive director and nearly 30 years with the National Aquarium, I have decided it is time to turn this great institution over to new leadership. The Aquarium has returned tenfold whatever I have contributed,” says Pittenger, when asked to summarize his three decades. Pittenger’s involvement with zoos and aquariums goes back to his very first job, selling balloons at the Philadelphia Zoo at age 14. Pittenger began his professional zoo and aquarium career when he joined the National Aquarium in 1979. As the Aquarium’s first education director, even in those early days Pittenger was laying the foundation to expand the Aquarium beyond its walls. He established outreach programs to Baltimore City public schools two years before the Aquarium opened its doors, and implemented several youth education programs, including the Henry Hall scholarship program. These programs set the precedent for the future quality and scope of the National Aquarium’s educational programming. Pittenger became the Aquarium’s executive director in 1995, taking on a long to-do list. Remembers Founding Board Chair, Frank Gunther, “[Dave’s] primary role was to shepherd the construction of the Marine Mammal Pavilion.” It was no small project, but the pavilion was a huge success, and the dolphin show remains a much loved part of a National Aquarium visit. Since that time, the dolphins have remained one of Pittenger’s personal favorites, particularly the many dolphin births through the years. He’s been here for all of them because, as Gunther notes, “Dave has been in the role of executive director longer than anyone.” Bringing dolphins to Baltimore was only the first of the large projects led by Pittenger that expanded the physical footprint of the National Aquarium. “During his tenure we voted as a board to go ahead with the Australia project,” explains another long-time board member and former board chair, Rand Griffin, “and at the same time we got involved in acquiring the DC venue and also acquiring the Middle Branch site.” These projects significantly expanded the size and reach of the National Aquarium. The addition in 2005 of the glass pavilion that houses Animal Planet Australia: Wild Extremes expanded Seeing Aquatic Animals in a New Light Henry Horenstein’s Renowned Photography Comes to the National Aquarium More than glass separates us from the strange and wondrous world of water. While aquatic animals share our planet, their world is profoundly 6 WATERMARKS | SPRING 2 011 the Baltimore venue to three buildings. After partnering with the National Aquarium in Baltimore in 2003, the National Aquarium in Washington, DC underwent an extreme makeover. It now features exhibits representing America’s Aquatic Treasures™, and plans are well underway to continue improving and expanding that venue on the National Mall. And by cleaning up the once-toxic brownfield property at the Middle Branch, and designating it for a 12.5 acre publicly-accessible park, the National Aquarium is reclaiming another of Baltimore’s prized waterfronts. But perhaps Pittenger’s biggest job was evolving public perception of the National Aquarium. Though known as a successful attraction, the National Aquarium truly has conservation at its core. In 2010, with the help of many Aquarium partners, that push to Though his departure is bittersweet, Pittenger expects he will always be working toward the National Aquarium’s mission. emphasize conservation culminated with the formation of the National Aquarium Conservation Center, an entity dedicated to field conservation and advocacy for aquatic species and environments. “With this new National Aquarium affiliate, we’ve moved past the aquarium just being viewed as an economic engine for the state to something that’s really on the cusp of being a global leader,” says Griffin. “And when we look back on it, it will really be [that all began] under Dave’s watch.” different from ours in ways we are just beginning to understand. Even so, we search for some connection to our aquatic relatives. see aquatic life in an entirely new light. And in doing so, reawakens in us our ancient and often enigmatic relationship to the world of water. Photographer, teacher and author of more than 30 books, Henry Horenstein magically transcends the boundaries between our world and theirs. His warm, light-infused images focus on rarely-noticed patterns and textures— organic forms at once strange and yet mysteriously familiar. He invites us to In professional tribute to departing Executive Director Dave Pittenger, and in celebration of our 30th year in the Inner Harbor, the National Aquarium welcomes Horenstein’s beautiful photography to the Baltimore venue. Though his departure is bittersweet, Pittenger expects he will always be working toward the National Aquarium’s mission. In a final challenge as he concludes his tenure Pittenger reminds us, “It’s very important to become actively involved with those who connect to the Aquarium on the mission side. The attraction is our glue, and we are heavily invested in education. We have the tools to connect people to conservation, and we can do more.” Pittenger’s departure opens a new chapter for him and for the National Aquarium. Still, within the National Aquarium community, his leadership will be missed. Aquarium board member and current chair of the National Aquarium Conservation Center Mike Batza captures the collective feeling most succinctly, stating: “He’s a hard act to follow.” Horenstein’s work has been displayed in museums, galleries and public art installations around the world. But this is the first time that images from his collection, Animalia, will be displayed in an aquarium setting. on level one of the Glass Pavilion, Horenstein’s images are a striking complement to the light-infused area of the spacious Harbor Overlook. These wonderful aquatic animal images will grace the Overlook walls until Fall 2011. This temporary, unique photography exhibition is designed to engage our visitors with the wonder and magic of the underwater world. WATERMARKS | SPRING 2 011 7 Responding to Disaster National Aquarium Experts in Action in the Gulf of Mexico BY TRACEY LYNN SHIFFLETT, MOLLY SHEEHAN On April 20, 2010, a fatal explosion on the offshore drilling rig Deepwater Horizon damaged the rig’s wellhead, which began leaking oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The oil spill rapidly became the most devastating environmental disaster in history, as thousands of gallons of oil per day gushed into coastal waters. National Aquarium leadership sought ways to help. With experience caring for stranded and injured marine animals, a nascent research group ready to tackle a pressing environmental issue and years of proven success improving coastal habitats around the Chesapeake Bay, the Aquarium offered hands-on response and lent scientific expertise to solving and mitigating damage. The Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) partnered with the many government and non-government groups on the ground at the Gulf and mobilized 220 zoos and aquariums to provide animal care experts who could help. As one of its members, the National Aquarium made room for stranded sea turtles, offered to transport animals needing long-term rehabilitation and provided veterinary support in the Gulf. Aquarium veterinary technician Christine Steinert spent up to twelve hours a day, for fifteen days, as one of those workers. Steinert administered medications, extracted and processed blood samples, took radiographs, recorded weights and tended to mild shell debridements on 143 rescued sea turtles—a group of animals at particular risk. Every individual sea turtle counts toward the protection of its species. There are only seven living species of sea turtles globally, and all are endangered or threatened, at risk of being wiped out completely. As the spill continued unchecked, Aquarium scientist Erik Rifkin, Ph.D., interim executive director of the National Aquarium Conservation Center (NACC), partnered with Mote Marine Laboratory 8 WATERMARKS | SPRING 2 011 and Johns Hopkins University and sprang into action to initiate a comprehensive study in the Gulf designed to ensure that the oil spill impact is documented as rigorously as possible. This research will enable scientists to demonstrate causality between the release of oil and injured resources and lost human use of those resources and services. Closer to home, Brent Whitaker, MS, DVM, the National Aquarium’s deputy executive director of biological programs, collaborated with the AZA and Congressional staff to encourage legislative movement and organize public response. As a result of industry input, in September 2010, the U.S. House of Representatives considered a legislative resolution to recognize and utilize zoos and aquariums as animal experts in environmental disaster responses. That resolution was referred to the House Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans and Wildlife, where it currently remains. On the Senate side, Dr. Rifkin lent his valuable scientific insight about the lessons learned from the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster when he testified before a Senate subcommittee examining the process of assessing the natural resources damage in the Gulf. The Aquarium’s strong connections to national leadership are the result of years of conservation work around the Chesapeake Bay and its watershed. This connection to coastal action made the National Aquarium a natural fit to host a press conference where U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Barbara Mikulski and U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings publicly addressed federal, state and local plans for the oil spill. Explained National Aquarium Executive Director Dave Pittenger at the event, “We believe the stakes are too high not to invest the time and resources to help.” Christine Steinert, National Aquarium Veterinary Technician, Gulf of Mexico 200 million gallons of oil had spilled into the Gulf. While there is relief that the gush of oil has been stopped, there is very little good in this tragic disaster. But some things give encouragement in this bleak situation: A strong and vast network of passionate zoo and aquarium professionals acted quickly to give thousands of imperiled animals worldclass care and a second chance at life. The research initiated by NACC will provide deeper insight into the true long-term damages to that ecosystem. And the opportunity to educate and advise our country’s leaders as they consider decisions about regulation and cleanup will have an impact on this and future emergency environmental response. See page 36 for more on the NACC study in the Gulf of Mexico. LEARNINGFROMMARINEMAMMALS National Aquarium animal care staff work with the scientific community to support research on aquatic animals. Combining data obtained from collection animals and wild populations gives conclusive longitudinal studies that help scientists, and the Aquarium, further advocate for these species. Dolphin scientist Dr. Diana Reiss continued to work with National Aquarium dolphins in 2010. For the past three years, Aquarium dolphins have supplemented Reiss’ investigations in marine mammal complex cognition research. Reiss’ research revealed that dolphins, like humans and a few other species, recognize their own mirror images. Reiss also documented that dolphins make their own objects for play by creating bubble rings in the water; and is currently working with the Aquarium’s marine biologists to develop a sophisticated analysis system that will advance scientists' understanding of how dolphins use their whistles in social communication. 10 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 CARINGFORANIMALS THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 11 TEAMWORKINTHEGULF EVERYTURTLECOUNTS NAMETHATPUFFIN SHIPWRECKTREASURES TONSOFWORK SHARINGKNOWLEDGE In August 2010, National Aquarium vet technician Christine Steinert was one of many industry professionals who stepped up to aid the oil spill relief efforts in the Gulf of Mexico. She spent fifteen days administering medications, extracting and processing blood samples, taking radiographs, recording weights and tending to mild shell debridements of 143 sea turtles rescued from contaminated Gulf waters. The National Aquarium marine animal rescue team was called on by the New England Aquarium to help five endangered cold-stunned Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. In December 2010, the turtles were flown from Boston to Baltimore, where they continue to receive care. The team plans to release them from a Maryland beach when local waters become warm enough this year. Last spring, the second successful puffling hatched at the National Aquarium. National Aquarium online social media followers were invited to give the chick a proper name. Nearly 1,200 people voted, choosing “Vinny” to complement the names of the chick’s parents, Victor and Vixen. Vinny is thriving and now almost indistinguishable from the adult puffins in Baltimore’s Sea Cliffs exhibit. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary exhibit in DC is getting a facelift. Work began last year to create a 2,000-gallon exhibit that will feature historical shipwrecks and highlight the issue of invasive species in the Great Lakes. Residents will include a common snapping turtle, walleye, yellow perch, chain pickerel and multiple species of sunfish. Built in 1981, the concrete structures in and around Baltimore’s Wings in the Water exhibit are corroding from 30 years of contact with salt water, and the wear and tear of 1.4 million visitors each year. In May 2010, a temporary bottom beam was added to the 250,000-gallon exhibit’s steel platform. More than 40 animals live in this exhibit, including stingrays, sharks and a green sea turtle. The National Aquarium Biological Programs team participated in eleven research and behavioral studies in 2010, six of which were published in industry trade journals. The team also supported eight university case studies, presented at 28 industry events all over the country and received more than a dozen achievement recognitions. 12 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 13 I'm so glad that we bought a membership so we can share with our grandchildren all the treasures hidden at the [National] Aquarium. – NATIONAL AQUARIUM VISITOR ECO-CONSCIOUSDINING SLEEPINGWITHTHEFISHES SPEAKINGFORSHARKS The Baltimore location continued its popular Fresh Thoughts Sustainable Seafood Dining Series last year with celebrity chefs from Top Chef. In September 2010, explorer, inventor and Emmy Award-winner Greg Marshall took attendees on an underwater journey that was filmed with his revolutionary CritterCam®, during a special Marjorie Lynn Bank Lecture Series event at the Baltimore location. Fifteen happy couples took their vows at the National Aquarium's Baltimore venue in 2010. Together with nearly 200 other catered events throughout the year, more then 22,000 people celebrated milestones at the National Aquarium. Nearly 700 people celebrated birthdays with live entertainment at the National Aquarium, Washington DC venue, last year. Nine other special occasions, including corporate receptions and dinners, welcomed 2,500 revelers to the nation’s first public aquarium. Each year, crowds gather at the National Aquarium to celebrate world cultures through music, art and dance. Nearly 14,000 visitors enjoyed festive Cultural Series events at both venues in 2010. 16 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 17 853 volunteers contributed nearly 117,000 hours to Aquarium operations, which represent an overall workplace value of approximately $2.4 million dollars. AQUARIUMVOLUNTEERS Throughout our four buildings in two cities, among the crowd members on the shore as a rehabilitated animal is being released and alongside team members digging, planting and clearing the Chesapeake Bay watersheds, there are hundreds of people in recognizeable National Aquarium uniforms. What is not plain to the eye is that many of these helpful and knowledgeable people are generously volunteering their time to the National Aquarium and its mission to enjoy, respect and protect the aquatic world. Hundreds of dedicated volunteers work side-by-side with National Aquarium paid staff members each day, and we couldn’t function without them! They are a diverse team, ranging in age from 14 to 91; there are 18 individuals hailing from the first class of volunteers trained 30 years ago; and 40 percent of National Aquarium volunteers have donated their time for more than five years. 18 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 GIVINGTHEIRTIME THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 19 When asked, 83 percent of visitors said their interest in conservation was increased as a result of their National Aquarium experience. TOTHERESCUE SAVETHESHARKS NATIONALHONORS The National Aquarium marine animal rescue team responded to 52 animal rescue calls, admitted 12 animals for rehabilitation and released five of the animals back to their natural habitats in 2010. In December 2010, National Aquarium staff and cartoonist Jim Toomey delivered 6,000 letters from Aquarium visitors to Capitol Hill in support of the Shark Conservation Act, which closes loopholes in the ban on shark finning in the U.S. Congress passed the bill and President Obama signed it into law on January 4. The National Aquarium received the Presidential Coastal America Partnership Award for its efforts to restore tidal wetlands at Hail Cove on Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge. National Aquarium teams have planted more than 15,000 native marsh grasses on this eroding isthmus. 20 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 MAKINGADIFFERENCE THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 21 2010: By The Numbers IntheField The National Aquarium Conservation Team (ACT!) spent another year in Chesapeake Bay watersheds putting its mission to “enjoy, respect and protect the aquatic world” into action. 731 Volunteers 1,605 Student volunteers 3,786 Volunteer hours 25.67 Acres of restored habitat 50,030 Native grasses planted 33,674 Pieces of debris removed IntheAquarium The National Aquarium continually employs green business practices in all of its buildings. 105,280 pounds of waste were diverted from landfills THOUGHTFULCHOICES In 2010, the National Aquarium introduced Thoughtful Choices options for refuse disposal in its cafés and concession areas. Bins designated for composting, recycling and landfill guide visitors on discarding trash, and signs prompt thought about the need and quantities of lids, straws and napkins. Offering visitors these options is part of an ongoing greening initiative, which also includes a new composting program for kitchen waste at the Baltimore venue, further reducing the amount of materials sent to landfills. 22 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 HOPEFLOATS RECLAIMINGTHEWATERFRONT Last summer, the Aquarium introduced a man-made floating wetland to the Inner Harbor. The island is part of a pilot project that aims to improve the harbor’s water quality and habitat for the dozens of aquatic species that live there. The Aquarium is collecting data from water samples and using an underwater camera to monitor the island’s efficacy. In May 2010, the National Aquarium unveiled plans for a publiclyaccessible waterfront park on its property on the Patapsco River. The Aquarium remediated the once-contaminated and underused property so that Baltimore City can transform it into an asset for the community and the environment. Through various internal conservation efforts, 460 pounds of techno trash, 2,577 pounds of E-cycled material and 550 pounds of batteries were also diverted from landfills; 31,050 pounds of food waste were composted into soil; 1,967 gallons of waste cooking oil was recycled to biodiesel; and 79 trees were saved by using eco-conscious office supplies. THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 23 [The Aquarium] world feels private and mysterious; their work is loaded with unique... possibilities. It’s something few outsiders get to see. – JOHN LEWIS, BALTIMORE MAGAZINE, MAY 2010 ITTAKESAVILLAGE Excellence in animal care is something we never compromise, and sometimes our animals require focused, time-intensive care. Last year, National Aquarium staff rose to the sudden special challenge of hand-raising an orphaned 8-week old, two-toed sloth. Young sloths remain dependent on their mothers for food and comfort during their first year of life, so our animal care staff knew the baby sloth would need extra special care to grow into a successful adult. After determining the youngster was male, the sloth was named “Xeno,” which derives from the scientific name Xenarthrans, the group that contains sloths, anteaters and armadillos. Over several months, staff consulted with sloth sanctuaries around the world, and gave Xeno 24-hour care that included a special diet, daily veterinary checkups and lots of coddling to mimic the natural behavior of baby sloths physically clinging to their mothers. Xeno is now thriving in Baltimore’s rain forest exhibit with the Aquarium’s three other sloths. 24 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 ALLABOUTANIMALS THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 25 ROMANCINGTHECORAL NEWLIFE RISINGSTAR BABYBOOM NEWRESIDENTS SUSTAINABLESEAFOOD In May 2010, the DC venue debuted the Buck Island National Park exhibit, which features a number of endangered Elkhorn coral colonies. National Aquarium staff collected the species from Puerto Rico through an international partnership program aiming to preserve coral reefs through coral breeding and reef restoration. The National Aquarium white-tailed trogons continued to successfully breed on exhibit last year, bringing the total to 19 chicks since 2000. The National Aquarium was the first aquarium or zoo in the country to successfully breed these birds. Last year, the National Aquarium’s 2-year old dolphin, Bayley, joined her Mom, Chesapeake, in the Our Ocean Planet dolphin show. Her favorite behavior is the high jump. With her small size, Bayley only jumps about 10 feet out of the water right now, but as she grows bigger and stronger, she’ll be able to hit the buoy almost 20 feet in the air! The DC venue was booming with new life in Spring 2010. Four young American alligators, two baby loggerhead sea turtles and a 2-year old polka dotted stingray pup were among the aquatic youngsters drawing crowds to the nation’s capital. Early last fall, Baltimore’s Atlantic Coral Reef exhibit began getting an infusion of color with new fish species. Fish often adapt the colors of their environment, so the new species mimic the bright hues of coral in yellow, red and pink. Red lionfish are striking to behold, with their red and white coloring and flowing fins, but they are also a danger to aquatic ecosystems in the Caribbean. In 2010, the National Aquarium continued its partnership program aimed at controlling and researching this invasive species. The DC venue held a dining event to introduce the lionfish as a sustainable seafood option. 26 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 27 As a result of their Aquarium field trips, 97 percent of teachers surveyed said they are better able to engage their students in conservation actions. More than 133,000 students, teachers and chaperones from 29 states and two foreign countries visited the Aquarium in 2010. In 2010, the Maryland State Board of Education created an Environmental Literacy Graduation Requirement for all Maryland public schools. Schools are required to infuse core subjects with conservation lessons. More than 750 teachers got a jump on this curriculum with National Aquarium training programs last year. National Aquarium Homeschool programs feature environmental themes, interactive presentations, classroom activities and discovery labs. Nearly 300 people gathered at the National Aquarium in June 2010 to commemorate the 92 program awards, plus 8 college scholarships, given through the Henry Hall program last year. The National Aquarium has awarded more than $400,000 in scholarship funds since the program began in 1981. Aquarium ambassadors shared our mission with an estimated 400,000 people at community events in the Baltimore area last year. More than 750 Baltimore City Public School 4th and 5th grade students attended the annual AquaPartners Family Night in June 2010 to celebrate this National Aquarium science and environmental education program. The Mid-Atlantic Marine Educators Association held its annual sleepover and mini-conference at the National Aquarium, Baltimore venue, in March 2010. Both National Aquarium venues were closed for three days, but the animals still needed 24-hour care. Essential Aquarium staff stayed at nearby hotels to ensure all the animals were fed and water systems were flowing, while security staff offered safe transportation. In 2010, Baltimore voters showed their continued support of the National Aquarium by approving a $1 million grant to aid aging infrastructure renovation projects. The National Aquarium received a $480,000 grant last year supporting its participation in a national coalition of aquariums educating the public about climate change. The initiative, which was awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, is a climate change communication program with youth training at its core. The iconic—but aging—neon blue wave on the south side of the National Aquarium’s main Baltimore building went “green” last summer when it was replaced with Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs), which use 70 percent less energy. In 2010, The Maryland General Assembly granted the National Aquarium $3.5 million in capital funding to support improvement projects to the Baltimore buildings over the next year. In April 2010, the National Aquarium advocated for living collections of marine mammals in U.S. attractions. Entering written testimony at a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee hearing, the Aquarium explained the role zoos and aquariums play in effective education, research and conservation of marine mammals, and how these initiatives help protect wild populations. 34 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 THEBESTPHOTOSOF2 010 | SPRING 2 011 35 The Future is Bright Green 2010 Marks Launch of National Aquarium Conservation Center Though the threats to our planet’s waters continue, we are at a unique moment of opportunity to save our oceans. There is renewed concern about our natural environment. American and global publics are focusing on our oceans’ health and the threats against marine life, and there is increased openness to conservation, the future of the oceans and stronger environmental policies. Against this backdrop, in 2010 the National Aquarium established the National Aquarium Conservation Center. Led by marine scientist Erik Rifkin, Ph.D., this new entity was formed to give the Aquarium a larger platform from which to expand handson conservation work, research and environmental policy and advocacy. This is a major step in the Aquarium’s evolution from a successful attraction with conservation as a primary message, to a nationally recognized and respected conservation organization that measures success through its positive impacts on people, the environment and aquatic life. The Conservation Center immediately faced its first opportunity to tackle a pressing environmental research need. In the wake of the catastrophic Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Dr. Rifkin quickly collaborated with Mote Marine Laboratory and Johns Hopkins University to lead a research study in the Gulf that will provide concerned government agencies and others with data necessary to quantify the chronic damages to natural resources in the Gulf. This research involves the deployment of “virtual fish” that provide data on levels of petroleum contaminants in the water and sediment. This data is already helping scientists assess the long-term ramifications of the spill, including potential mortality rates of aquatic life and lost natural resources. Under Dr. Rifkin’s leadership, the Conservation Center has also partnered on research efforts that will increase understanding of mercury levels in wild and captive dolphins, quantify sediment contamination in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and protect spotted eagle rays. In 2011, the Conservation Center will hold its first symposium, convening scientists, policymakers and other advisors to identify opportunities and gaps in our understanding of the damage caused by the Gulf oil spill. The Center will also be an advocacy voice for work the Aquarium already has underway, such as protecting precious coral reef ecosystems, controlling invasive lionfish and expanding Chesapeake Bay and wetland initiatives. Explained Executive Director Dave Pittenger at the exciting September 2010 kick-off event, “For 30 years, the National Aquarium has sought to inspire people, and, in particular, our next generation, to celebrate and nurture the world’s aquatic environments. Through the establishment of the National Aquarium Conservation Center, we reconfirm our commitment and our promise to leave as our legacy to future generations a world in which aquatic habitats are preserved and restored.” July 4th Pier Party 7 – 10 p.m. Enjoythebestviewofthefireworksandlive entertainmentforthewholefamily.Bringapicnic basketorpurchasesnacksattheparty.Reservations arerequiredforthissell-outevent.
