“Salute to a Vision” Celebrates 35 Years of the JCCCNC
Executive Director Paul Osaki to be Recognized for 20 Years of Leadership
The JCCCNC
presents Salute
to a Vision, the
2008 Annual Event
celebrating the 35th
Anniversary of the
Japanese Cultural
and Community
Center of Northern
California, in
recognition of Paul
Osaki for his 20
years at the JCCCNC
and serving the
community for 30 years.
A “Tribute and Roast” from celebrities, political officials and
members of the community will highlight Salute to a Vision – an
evening of fun and friendship acknowledging the great leadership
and dedication Paul Osaki has made to the JCCCNC and the
Japanese American community.
Celebrating the occasion as Honorary Co-Chairs of the event
are Paul’s long-time friends whom he has worked with for many
years: Former Secretary of Transportation Norman Mineta,
His Excellency Ambassador of Japan Ryozo Kato, Former
Ambassador of Japan Shunji Yanai, United States Senator Dianne
Feinstein, United States Representative Mike Honda and Consul
General Yasumasa Nagamine.
Paul’s influence reaches far beyond the Bay Area, covering
California, reaching Seattle, Washington D.C., Hawaii and

crossing the ocean to Japan. As an
exceptional visionary, he has brought
the JCCCNC to the forefront of
cultural and historical preservation,
helping to build bridges across the
Pacific, and creating a welcoming
place that many people call their
second home — the home that the
Nisei envisioned over 35 years ago.
Using the dream of those Nisei pioneers to guide him to this
momentous occasion, we hope that you will help us honor Mr. Osaki
for all that he has accomplished so far. Salute to a Vision will be
held on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at the Westin St. Francis
Hotel in San Francisco. For more information, please contact Joy
Iwasa at (415) 567-5505 x235 or e-mail jiwasa@jcccnc.org.
Nikkei Family Legacy Project
One of the JCCCNC goals for this year is to initiate new and
innovative programs that will engage youth to take an active role in
preserving our history and culture. In response, the Nikkei Family
Legacy Project was created and thanks to a generous $30,000
grant from the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program
(CCLPEP), and support from the Henri and Tomoye Takahashi
Charitable Foundation, this project will now be realized.
The Nikkei Family Legacy Project (NFLP) will empower young
Nikkei with the confidence, the training and the tools to interview,
video document and share the untold stories of their parents,
grandparents and great-grandparents, before their family histories
are lost forever. By learning about the Japanese American experience
in a very personal way and documenting it, history will become real
and relevant, youth will become more aware of their identity and
they will have produced a lasting video to share with and educate
generations to come. While many documentaries, books and oral
histories have been produced, thousands of Japanese American

stories still remain untold and undocumented. Author Maureen Taylor
once said, “Discovering family history is a great way to teach people
history locally, nationally and internationally, it provides a sense that
history is real, it’s my history!”
NFLP will include a comprehensive interview guide, technical
training guide, a series of hands-on workshops and a website with
downloadable training materials. The JCCCNC will be working with a
team of professionals to develop and produce the training program,
including Dianne Fukami, President of Bridge Media; Jan Yanehiro,
President of Jan Yanehiro, Inc.; Wendy Tokuda, Bay Area KRON 4
anchor and reporter; and Boku Kodama of Urban VOICE, with video
equipment and materials available for loan to participants. Upon
completion of the documentary projects, the JCCCNC will host a
community film-screening to showcase the untold stories.
If you are interested in documenting your family history
please contact Ali Kagawa at (415) 567-5505 or e-mail

Message from the Executive Director
The National Japanese American Yellowpages
JAYellowPages.com
The Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Northern California
(JCCCNC) is proud to announce the upcoming launch of the National
Japanese American Yellowpages website sponsored by AT&T in August 2008.
The Japanese American (JA) Yellowpages website is an updated
on-line version of the original Japanese American Community Directory first
published in 1997 by the JCCCNC with support from AT&T.
Although 1997 was not that long ago, back then very few knew of
the Internet, had very little access to e-mail and had no idea how
big the World Wide Web would become. It is amazing how in just a
decade, our world and our community has evolved.
I remember how facsimile machines were all the rage, an
incredible invention that changed the world and how we
communicated. I remember cell phones weighed about five
pounds and looked like bricks.

communicate. Our hope is that the JA Yellowpages will help
people better understand the vastness and wealth of our
community organizations throughout the United States.
JAYellowPages.com
In the first phase, we will launch the directory with about 400
organizations and the ability to continue to add many more. In
our second phase, we plan to feature various organizations as well as highlight community
programs and events. Our third phase will include a National Japanese/Japanese American
business directory which will further enhance our ability to share with the world what our
community has to offer.
Communicating who we are, what we do and why we do it is an important part of helping to
preserve and promote our Japanese American community. The JA Yellowpages is another
important way for the JCCCNC to meet the pressing needs of our changing community and the
way that we communicate with others interested in our culture and community.
We are extremely grateful to AT&T for their support of the original Japanese American
Community Directory in 1997 and also for their continued support of the National Japanese
American Community Directory JAYELLOWPAGES.COM.
Sincerely,
Paul Osaki
Executive Director

Courtney Okuhara

Bara Kawasaki
Development Associate
Courtney Okuhara is the
newest member of the
JCCCNC team. Courtney,
originally from San
Diego, was introduced
to the JCCCNC in
2006 while visiting
San Francisco’s
Japantown with the
Nikkei Community Internship Program
(NCI). “Touring Japantown and learning
about the community’s history helped me
to understand even more the importance of
cultural preservation, especially since we
do not have a Japantown back home.” This
understanding motivated Courtney to apply
for the Membership Associate position at
the JCCCNC and soon after graduating
from U.C. Riverside with a B.S. in Business
she moved to the Bay Area.
As a member of the Intercollegiate Nikkei
Council, Courtney has made a commitment
to increase youth involvement saying,
“Nikkei youth have a unique responsibility
to preserve our culture and I want to help
make sure they have the opportunities to
get involved.” She is currently managing
the JCCCNC Spring Membership Drive and
is working with the Programs Associate to
plan new and innovative programs that are
of interest to young people.
As a San Francisco
native, Bara Kawasaki
would occasionally
stop in at the Center
during her visits to
Japantown, but she did
not become involved
in the Japanese
American community
until recently. When the new Development
Associate position was created at the
JCCCNC, she saw it as more than just a
way for her to gain experience working in a
nonprofit organization, but “as an opportunity
to utilize my Japanese language skills and
learn more about my heritage.”
Since she began in February, Bara
has been helping to organize the Annual
Support Drive and the 2008 JCCCNC
Annual Event. She also represented the
JCCCNC at events, including the Northern
California Cherry Blossom Festival and
the Asian Heritage Street Celebration.
“My work in the Development office is
meaningful to me because I am able to
contribute to a cause that I believe in while
giving others the opportunity to get involved
with the Center and the community.”
Bara graduated from U.C. Davis with a
degree in Japanese language and a minor
in women and gender studies.
Mika Shimizu
Office Manager / Receptionist
Meet Mika, the JCCCNC
Office Manager and
Receptionist. Born and
raised in Hiroshima,
Japan, Mika Shimizu
moved to the United
States to study
English and women
and gender studies at
the University of Oregon. In 2003, Mika
moved back home to become a junior
high school teacher but in 2006 decided
to return to the States, this time to San
Francisco.
“I didn’t realize the importance of
learning about my Japanese culture
until I moved away from Japan,” Mika
shares. “It was here in California that I
learned the Japanese tea ceremony and
Japanese calligraphy, and I am happy to
maintain my connection to Japan.” As a
bilingual Shin-Issei, Mika has become an
integral part of our Japantown community
and she hopes to help other Shin-Issei
adjust to living in America. “Living abroad
can be a challenge; I especially miss
my grandmother in Hiroshima. But I am
so fortunate to have met so many new
friends; the JCCCNC has become like a
new family to me.”

Over 1,700 Attend Kristi Yamaguchi’s Children’s Day Festival
On Saturday, May 3, 2008, over 1,000 people crowded the Japantown Peace
Plaza in San Francisco to celebrate Kristi Yamaguchi’s Children’s Day Festival in
Japantown. Co-sponsored by the JCCCNC, the San Francisco Japantown Foundation
and Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream Foundation, the event featured Japanese
crafts, games and food booths for children, as well as dance and music performances
by youth. Children enjoyed catching goldfish with paper nets at the Koi Katch station,
learning to dance Soran Bushi with the UC Berkeley Nikkei Student Union and taking
pictures with Totoro and Sailor Moon. A free raffle was conducted hourly, with prizes
from Sanrio Inc., Japan Video and Media
and Okasan and Me.
The theme of this year’s art and essay
contest was friendship, in recognition of
the 50th Anniversary of the San FranciscoOsaka Sister City Relationship. The 2008
Northern California Cherry Blossom Court
selected entries to be added to our sister
city time capsule robot, scheduled to be
reopened for the 100th Anniversary in 2057.
The festival was the culmination of a two
week Children’s Day celebration in which the
JCCCNC offered kimono dressing for kids
and hosted free school visits for over 725
children and teachers from San Francisco
public school classes, kindergarten through
2nd grade. Children recognized their favorite
Disney characters alongside the traditional
Hinamatsuri (Girls Day) and Tango no Sekku
(Boys Day) doll displays and were able to create their
own origami dolls and paper koi to share what they
learned with others.
The JCCCNC is proud to present these annual
events in honor of children, where they are able to
discover and celebrate Japanese culture in a way
that is meaningful to them.
Children’s Day School Visits and Kimono Dressing
were provided in cooperation with the San Francisco
Japantown Foundation, the Consulate General of
Japan in San Francisco and many volunteers.

Inside the JCCCNC
Get Involved
Way! Support JCCCNC!
Any amount and type of giving makes a difference – it’s what keeps the JCCCNC energized and active. Here are just a
few of the ways you can support the JCCCNC!
• Become a Member.
Join us today. Your membership provides support to the JCCCNC to
carry out its educational, cultural, recreational and social programs. Be a
part of the Center where future generations will learn about our community,
culture and traditions.
• Give a Gift In Memory or In Honor. Giving on behalf of someone
special or someone who has passed on is a heartfelt way to ensure to pay
tribute to unique people in our lives. If you would like to donate a gift on
behalf of someone you know, please send us your donation and contact
information and we will send out a personal thank you to the family or
individual letting them know of your gift to the JCCCNC.
We’ve made it easy for you to
give to the JCCCNC. Give safely
and securely online at
www.jcccnc.org. Or if you
prefer, drop a check to us, or call us if you would like to set up recurring
payments with your credit card.
• Have Your Employer Double Your Donation - Corporate Fund
Matching Programs.
Did you know that most corporations offer to match their employees’ donations
to non-profit organizations? Consult your human resources department to find
out how to increase your individual donation (often 100% match) through your
employer’s fund matching programs.
• Volunteer. Give us your valuable time and assist us with special events,
programs and administrative duties. Examples of volunteer work are teaching a
class or assisting with organizing our annual community events. University students may also be eligible for course credit
for completing community service at the JCCCNC.
• Attend our 2008 Annual Event “Salute to a Vision” – September 13th at the Westin St. Francis Hotel. This year’s
event, in recognition of Executive Director Paul Osaki for his 20 years of vision and leadership at the JCCCNC, will begin
with an incredible cocktail reception and silent auction, scrumptious dinner and
entertaining program highlighting programs and classes from the JCCCNC.
Individual tickets are $175. Tables and sponsorships are also available.
• Stay in the loop!
Sign up for our monthly e-newsletter! Get
up-to-date information about the latest JCCCNC
programs, events and member only deals. It’s
easy to sign up—just click on the “sign up for our
e-mail newsletter” button on our website and enter
