“Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me … Dessert?”
by Jenna Beason
Life, liberty and the pursuit of extraordinary
food. Liberty Bistro, located in the basement of the former 1929 New Braunfels
City Hall building, was created out of
founder/partner Darren
Scroggins’ desire to
operate his own restaurant and his passion for
our nation’s history.
“My inspiration for this
concept comes from my
love of food, wine and
people, as well as my
fascination of the foundation and history of this
great nation, the beauty
Darren Scroggins,
of black and white photography and the power of faith,” said
Scroggins.
Black and white portraits of former presidents, and a few first ladies, look down
from their frames on the walls, as diners
debate which is more delicious; the smoked
salmon pizza with capers and red onions or
the crab cakes with garlic aioli and smoked
paprika sauce.
The contemporary,
American cuisine consists of everything
from wood-fired pizzas and specialty sandwiches to fire-roasted lamb and juicy filets,
ranging in price from about $10 to $27.
Everything is made in-house including all
breads, pastas and desserts. Scroggins is
especially proud of his environmentally
friendly “green” kitchen, featuring a woodburning pizza oven. "We are pursuing a
green angle in the choice of our equipment,
to-go containers, recycling and local sourcing of produce and proteins," said
Scroggins.
Many items on the seasonally changing
menu are tagged with liberty-inspired
names such as the Thomas Jefferson
Tomato Bisque, the Johnny Appleseed
Salad and the Forty-Ninth State Wild
Salmon. "Basically, the menu is a reflection of our diverse culture in the United
States, and the concept is a soft reminder of
what made this country great, its ideals and
the courage of our forefathers, as well as
their foresight," said Scroggins.
Each room at Liberty Bistro sports its own
theme. In the main dining area, dubbed the

Supreme Court, patrons sit under what was
created to resemble a waving American
flag, with bare bulbs dotting the overhead
bent, red conduit. The bistro also features
two semi-private rooms of equal size called
the House and Senate. The Treasury room
is an actual vault from 1929 which houses
the wine cellar and historic American documents and is also available for private dining. A sketch of Mount Rushmore adorns
the main wall of the Executive Branch – a
fully private room designed for meetings,
parties and wine dinners of up to 28 people
– which has quickly become a favorite spot
for Trade Universities. There is also a patio
at street level, where diners can gaze across
the downtown street and observe the folks
strolling in and out of the busy courthouse.
Liberty Bistro boasts a full bar and is open
for lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. "We
are value and quality focused,” Scroggins
said. “A more perfect union of food, wine,
service and atmosphere." So get a taste of
Liberty. It’s your civic duty.

How Trade Works for...
The Travel Industry
An empty hotel room, timeshare, or condo is revenue lost forever. Your overhead expenses continue however; there
is no going back and making up that void or reclaiming that lost revenue. Tradebank's barter professionals assist
you in maintaining maximum occupancy without resorting to deep discounting.
As a Tradebank client you are able to turn empty space into valuable purchasing power. Our Tradebank clients
travel for both business and leisure which will provide you with the additional financial resources you need to do
advertising & marketing campaigns designed to bring in new customers, property and building maintenance, printing, as well as incentive and benefit programs for your employees.

Up, Up and Away!
by Jenna Beason
If you are looking for an experience that is out
of this world, Helicopter Tours of Texas is the
place to go. Well, ok, technically, passengers
never leave the earth’s stratosphere, but
owner/pilot Steve Van Buren does ensure a
memorable experience for all.
Helicopter Tours of Texas uses a state-of-the-art
Robinson R-44 helicopter that can carry three
passengers in air-conditioned comfort. “Air conditioning is pretty unusual in the helicopter
world,” said Van Buren, a pilot with more than
30 years of experience. The Robinson even
has four-way communication for interaction
between the passengers and the pilot, as well as bubble windows for optimum viewing and picture-taking opportunities. The
company offers a variety of tours to show off the Texas hill country, including aerial views of Schlitterbahn, historic Gruene,
the Guadalupe and Comal rivers and breathtaking views of Canyon Lake. Van Buren also handles custom flights popular
with local realtors and landowners. He holds
a license from the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department that allows for predator eradication. Passengers that are hunters at heart can
even try wild or exotic game netting.
When Van Buren opened his business a year
ago, he immediately became an asset to the
city in more ways than one. “We fly many of
our helicopter tours along both the Guadalupe
and Comal rivers,” said Van Buren. “So, when
we opened, I contacted the river officers of the
New Braunfels Police Department to let them
know that, if they ever needed our help with
anything, we’d be more than willing to do what
we could to help.” Van Buren has since been
involved with assisting in many incidents, at
no cost to the city. With his aerial view, he is
able to help save valuable time and resources
by allowing the ground personnel to accurately
pinpoint the locations of people in danger.
Van Buren has proven to be an invaluable
resource to the police department, and ultimately the citizens of New Braunfels and
Comal County.
Van Buren says that he is enjoying his new
Photos courtesy of Helicopter Tours of Texas
career in New Braunfels. “Flying at about 500
feet overhead gives you a whole different perspective – it’s a unique way to bring the natural beauty of the New Braunfels
area to life,” Van Buren said. “Our passengers are kids and adults of all ages. Everyone loves it, and we’re looking forward
and upward to bigger and better things over the next few months.” Specifically, Van Buren has plans to travel with one of his
helicopters to different areas of the United States and offer tours at special events, such as, air shows, motorcycle rallies and
state and county fairs. It will take a large trailer to haul the helicopter across the country, and Van Buren will offer advertising
opportunities (on trade!) on the trailer itself. So, be on the lookout for Helicopter Tours of Texas at the next major event that
you attend. Just present your Tradebank card, and take an unforgettable ride on trade!

yet they appeal to all ages.
Feel free to contact Kitty Keller

Tria Jewelers
by Jenna Beason
Tria Jewelers is a picture-perfect, family jewelry store that provides the kind
of customer service rarely seen anymore. Owners Michael and Monique
Presley opened shop in New Braunfels two years ago, but are not new to
the jewelry business by any means. Michael has been a jeweler for over 20
years, and previously owned stores in Austin. Tria prides themselves on the
fact that jewelry brought in for repair never leaves their store, so customers
can rest assured that their treasures are always in good hands.
Michael, who holds an Arts degree, has the amazing ability to transform a
pencil drawing into a beautiful piece of jewelry. He creates true, one-of-akind, custom pieces designed specifically to his customers’ visions. His talent is truly cutting-edge in terms of design.
Tria Jewelers is pleased to offer this spectacular bracelet up for sale.
Crafted by Navajo jeweler Herbert Joe, this piece, titled “The Long Walk,”
won him "Best in Show" at the 6th Annual Indigenous Peoples Art Market in
Mt. Pleasant, Michigan in August 2006. This work of art took Mr. Joe many
years to create and is comprised of a sterling silver channel inlay bracelet
with turquoise, jet, coral and dumortierite and is laced with 14K gold. The
inside of the bracelet honors and depicts the long walk of the Navajos in the
1800s. It is available for T$18,000. Tria also stocks smaller pieces of
Herbert Joe’s creations at their store. Michael and Monique can be contacted at 830.625.5552.

...to the heart of the Texas Hill Country
and you'll find New Braunfels.
Founded in 1845, New Braunfels is a
quaint, German-settled town overflowing with old world heritage and small
town charm. German names can be
seen on the billboards and street names
throughout the city. New Braunfels has
a population of over 51,000 and is
growing at a steady pace – a great balance between the charm of a small community and the convenience of a large
urban area. New Braunfels is an easy
drive from major Texas cities. Austin is
40 miles to the north, San Antonio is 25
miles to the south and Houston is 160
miles to the east.
With the Comal and Guadalupe rivers
running through the city, visitors and
the local folk enjoy a variety of water
recreational activities. Both rivers are
famous for their exciting rapids, scenic
beauty and sparkling clear waters. The
rivers draw thousands of tubers,
canoeists, fly fishermen and other river
enthusiasts to their cool and refreshing
waters each weekend in the summer.
New Braunfels can offer a true firstclass experience to any Tradebank
client. Let a sleek limousine pick you

major attractions as well.
New Braunfels is home to many worldfamous tourist attractions including the
Natural Bridge Caverns/Wildlife

the
top-rated
waterpark,
Schlitterbahn (German for “slippery
road”), which is the most popular summertime waterpark in the United States
and has been voted World’s Best
Waterpark by the Travel Channel. The
park has over three miles of tubing
adventures, seven children’s water playgrounds, 17 water slides, the world’s
first surfing machine, and three uphill
water coasters spread over 65 acres of
fun. The waterpark boasts free parking
and allows customers to bring in their
own picnic. This is a rare feature
among modern amusement parks.
The nationally registered Historic
District of Gruene draws record crowds
each year for its great shopping, wine
tasting, dining and charming Bed &
Breakfasts. Make sure to put on your
dancin’ shoes and scoot over to Gruene
Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas.
Gruene Hall has played host to such
acts as Willie Nelson, George Strait,
Jerry Jeff Walker and Lyle Lovett.
You’d be hard-pressed to find a place
with more character than Gruene.

Speaking From Experience
by Marcy S. Yaffe, National Trade/Training
Director
Tradebank’s website is a vital component to
managing your trading activity. All clients
are encouraged to login to www.tradebank.com.
If you haven’t already done so, here are
simple step by step instructions:
Go to www.tradebank.com.
Step 1. In the top right corner you will see
the log-in box. There you will enter your
log-in information. If this is the first time
you are logging in, use your 16-digit
account number as your “User name”. Your
password will be the 4-digit PIN given to
you when you joined Tradebank. If you do
not have your account number or your PIN,
please contact your local Tradebank office.
First time Users see an automated notification that their User name/Password needs to
be changed. You will be asked to enter your
account number and then it will prompt you
to create a new User name and Password.
(When creating a User name consider your
business name, or something related to your
business because this will be how other
clients in the system see you and your User
name will be attached to your account.)
Write down your new username/password
for future reference.
Step 2. After you enter this customized
information, a confirming email will be sent
to you. This confirming email lets you know
that you can now receive Tradebank emails.
The system will ask you to respond to the

confirming email. The process of sending
and receiving completes the cycle and you
now have the ability to communicate with
Tradebank. If you do not receive a confirming email, it is an indication that there is a
communication error. The most common
reason for the cycle not being completed is
your computer is not set to allow emails
from Tradebank. Please set your permission
levels to allow Tradebank correspondence
to be directed to you.
Step 3. Next, you can go in and update your
profile information, add photos, view your
statements online, choose your categories,
print directories of regions, shop and post to
the Classified Ads. Take this opportunity to
promote your services and products through
descriptive words and images.
Once you establish your Tradebank website
presence you will find a wealth of trading
information that will assist your Trade
Brokers and the Tradebank staff in maximizing your barter experiences.
