NEWSLETTER - Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce
July 2016 Issue Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce 700 Main Street, Sebastian FL 3258 772-589-5969 | SebastianChamber.com Member Spotlight NEWSLETTER The Chamber Currents Angela Dickens Director of Marketing Sebastian Hospital 13695 US Hwy 1 Sebastian, Florida 772-589-3186 SebastianRiverMedical.com Angela Dickens joined Sebastian River Medical Center in 2011 as the Director of Marketing and Community Relations. She is responsible for all of the events, health fairs, physician promotion and service line advertising that you see happening in the community. Angela grew up in Maine and lived in various New England states prior to relocating to Sebastian with her husband and two children. Over her twentyyear career, she’s performed media relations for international companies as well as marketing for several large health systems. She truly loves the Sebastian community and enjoys being an ambassador for the hospital. Exciting news for Sebastian River Medical Center: final details are being prepared for construction of an entirely new 10 room operating suite and 48 additional private patient rooms designed with the patient experience in mind. When complete, the project will add nearly 94,000 square feet and more than 20,000 square feet of the existing facility will be renovated. New equipment and expansion of specialty services areas will include seven surgical suites, two endoscopy rooms and one bronchoscopy procedure room. This will increase the number and scope of procedures that can be performed at the hospital. Plans are underway to have a groundbreaking ceremony later this summer and the project should be complete within 24 months. Stay tuned for event details! If you would like to “make the front page” of our newsletter, make sure you schedule time this month at one of our networking activities, and maybe your name will be drawn for the monthly spotlight! Check out our calendar inside! July 2016 Beth L. Mitchell, President & CEO It’s Election Season, and all of the early signs that are out are a signal of more to come! For those of you who are new to the Chamber, or to refresh member memory, our Chamber is a non political chamber. Our membership has made it clear over the years that as a matter of policy we do not endorse or campaign for candidates. Our 501©(6) status with the Internal Revenue Service prohibits this type political activity as well. The Chamber is allowed to advocate for businesses on issues that may impact their ability to prosper. We do have a very active Legislative/Government Affairs Committee that is currently planning a Candidates Forum for County Commission races, which will be held in August. If you have concerns or issues and would like more information from the candidates, please forward your questions to me, and we will try to get the answers from the candidates. Also, please understand that not all Chambers operate the way we do. In fact there are State Chambers, and National Chambers, who are very politically involved. We are not involved in any way with the campaigns that may be conducted in our local area but are sponsored by different organizations that have nothing to do with the Sebastian River Area Chamber. Having said all of that, we have mailed out the ballots for our annual Board of Directors and their bios and the ballot are also included in this newsletter. Every year the membership elects three new board members who have agreed to serve for three years. We really appreciate the valuable input received from the Board, and the dedication to the organization and willingness to give time and talent to insure success. Please reciprocate, and caste your ballot, we make it easy! Our Marketing and Communications Director, Britney Melchiori, has written a column about the web banner program connected to our www.SebastianChamber.com website. Check it out! This is a great opportunity to advertise on a high traffic website. One of the most important features is the ability to track your ad, and measure the impact it is having on your business. We will be converting all of the business card ads you see in this newsletter to banner ads on the website over the next six months. We think you will be pleased with the results! The Fourth of July is upon us, and it promises to be another spectacular all day extravaganza in Sebastian! The Lions Club of Sebastian puts on this event, with the support from the City of Sebastian, and it truly reflects the values of our community. I personally have attended for over twenty two years, and still look forward to the parade, in all its glory, and the day long festivities in the park, ending the evening with a fireworks show that rivals none. The parade will of course be enhanced with all of the politicos coming out to show their support for our Country’s birthday celebration, and of course to see and be seen by the voters. This year’s celebration will probably be the best ever, but then I say that every year! Join us for lunch in July at Captain Hiram’s, we will have our annual “State of the County” from our own Commissioner Wesley Davis. This will be his swan song to our Chamber, as he moves on to new endeavors, and we want to wish him well! And join us with a long time member, Beach Cove Properties for a summer time Business and Pleasure! Have a great weekend, and enjoy the Fourth of July! Chamber Networking Events What a great turnout for the Chamber Networking Breakfast. Thanks to our host, Pelican Landing Assisted Living and Memory Care and all who attended. It was a wonderful time. Kathy McDonough and Kevin Biju cut the ribbon for Rapid Response Computer Repair at this months Chamber Business and Pleasure. Thank you all for attending. Tourism Tidbits By Nicole Capp Holbrook Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge Webcam We are very excited to announce that the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge Webcam was installed in May! It was paid for by the Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce which received funding from the Indian River County Chamber of Commerce Tourist Development Council. Pelican Island Preservation Society has graciously underwritten the monthly hosting and maintenance fees associated with the webcam. The webcam is located at the end of the Centennial Trail on the Observation Deck overlooking Pelican Island. The camera provides an overview shot of Pelican Island as well as a bird zoom and a video clip. We have a TV in our Visitor’s Center which links to the webcam so visitors can see the natural habitat and beautiful wildlife at Pelican Island. The webcam can be viewed online at pelicanislandwebcam.com. Be sure to check it out! VISIT FLORIDA 2016-2017 Advertising Grant We just found out that we were awarded the 2016-2017 VISIT FLORIDA Advertising Matching Grant that we applied for earlier this year. The purpose of the committee is to create new ideas on how to promote tourism in the Sebastian River Area that will benefit our community. The meetings are also an opportunity to brainstorm ideas and network with other tourism businesses throughout the community. At the end of the meeting, we will be drawing the Tourism Spotlights for September, October, & November. You must be present to win this FREE advertising opportunity which is featured in the Chamber Currents and in the Chamber Tourism E-blast which is distributed to our database consisting of over 5,000 email addresses. Florida Sportfishing TV Editorial Retreat Last week, Sport Fishing Television, a part of Bonnier Corporation, one of the largest special-interest publishing groups in the United States, held their editorial retreat at Capt Hiram’s. SFTV produced the awesome episode on Sebastian Inlet that aired in February so we were so excited for them to come back! Ten Senior Editors, Digital and Content Directors, Publishers, and Photographers traveled from California, Boston, Maine and the Orlando area to attend. The Chamber hosted a dinner for them upon their arrival, Capt Hiram’s provided accommodations and they fished the next morning with a few different local fishing charters. As a result, the Sebastian River Area will be featured in a 4-page story in Sport Fishing Magazine. We’ll let you know which issue it will be featured in so you can look for it on the shelves! I came to the Chamber on a temporary internship to try and gain more experience in a working field. I didn’t realize that I would be gaining so much more knowledge then just work experience. I learned more about this town in the eight weeks of being in the Chamber then the three years I’ve lived here. Being a single mother of two I thought it meant I would be stuck inside with nothing to do other than an occasional park. Well I was wrong! Being in the Chamber I learned of so many kid friendly events that go on year round. I learned how kind the people of Sebastian really are and in turn feel much more confident being part of this beautiful town. I also loved how the people I worked with were so kind and understanding. Not once was I ever looked down upon for not knowing something or ever talked down to for the way I looked or who I was. The Chamber is really a wonderful place with such great things to offer. They are the true heart and brain of Sebastian. I’m sad to be leaving the Chamber and wished greatly to stay and be a member for life but life is taking me other places. Having just completed my National Phlebotomy Technician, I am off to the medical field to hopefully make a difference in people’s lives as the Chamber does in their own way. Thank you for the experience of a life time. At 5,500 feet, you will deploy your parachute and enjoy an extended canopy flight through the sky for approximately 5 minutes allowing you to enjoy the breath-taking view. You must be 18 years of age and cannot weigh in excess of 230 pounds to do a tandem skydive. Don't want to jump? Come out and enjoy a cool beverage while having lunch at the Zoo Bar Grill and Cafe and watch the skydivers land. The observation is open to the public and is a great way to have a memorable day with friends and family! For more information, visit www.skydiveseb.com or call 772.388.5672 or 800.399.5867 (JUMP).
