Source : Météo msn and Météo France Protected Areas Frontignan sits between two major nature reserves: the Gardiole hills, to the north, and the lakes. The Palavasian lakes, lying between Sète and Montpellier, are a designated wetland, internationally recognized in October 2008, following France’s signature of the Ramsar convention in 1986. International recognition acknowledges the investment made by local authorities in the preservation of these sensitive nature areas with their exceptional fauna and flora. In France, 25 sites have obtained this label together with more than 1,400 world sites. Lakes, lagoons, saltwater marshes, rivers, peat lands... And then there is World Wetlands Day, celebrated on 2 February, the anniversary of the Wetlands Convention, known as the Ramsar Convention, after the Iranian city where it was signed on 2 February 1971. Web site: www.siel-lagune.org Walking in the Gardiole hills 7 My Mediterranean From its position on the seashore, Frontignan has playground! You’ve here for fun, aren’t you? Well, make the most of the water activities you have always dreamed of, enjoy the thrill of a sea excursion on a catamaran or a windsurfer, try a jet-ski or wake-board, why not go kayaking or underwater diving on the Plateau des Aresquiers, a unique world site... Nowhere else does the Mediterranean offer so much fun, protected by the majestic curves of the Gulf of Lion, nowhere else will you find such pleasure in the Great Sea and the marvellous thrill when in the early morning you visit the market stalls offering fish fresh from the night’s trawl. And there is the marina, with its 600 places - of which 60 are kept for visiting yachts. The Mediterranean offers unlimited pleasures. And this is why Frontignan works so hard for its preservation. This is also glinting in the golden sun and offering its unique Our territory is blessed with maximum sunshine and a cooling wind, two secret ingredients of Muscat de Frontignan. But it needs the passion of winemakers to release its true nectar. Winemakers repeating the same gestures, generation after generation, to nurture a wine that has delighted palettes throughout the centuries. Their efforts were rewarded in 1936, when Muscat de Frontignan was awarded the coveted Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC), one of the first wines in France to receive this label. With its characteristic twisted bottle, the Muscat de Frontignan is famous for its golden glints, explosive taste, and unique aromas. And then there is the local gastronomy: try a squid rouille, a macaronade, stuffed mussels, a bourride of monkfish, a tielle, an olive tapenade, biscuits flavoured with aniseed from the garrigues, Muscat bonbons, and rosemary jelly... a magnificent palette of tastes awaits you! 12 Gourmet tours through the Muscat vineyards liday true of our Muscat, product of an exceptional territory, flavour. It is an excellent wine for an aperitif or as an accompaniment for foie gras, marbled cheese, melon or strawberries. Serve at 7° or 8°. DRY MUSCAT A dry white wine made from grapes on 3 year-old vines and picked early in the season. It has a lovely aroma and is less sweet while keeping the Muscat taste. It can be served with all types of seafood: fish, shellfish, or tielles, but also with asparagus and white meats. Serve very cold as an aperitif at 9° to 10°. LIQUEUR WINE Very rich and smooth, with a long finish, it tastes of candied orange and honey. Ideal for chocolate desserts, fruit salads, etc. Serve at 8°. EAU DE VIE DE MARC Through distilling, all the bitterness usually found in marc is removed and the wine becomes smooth and sweet with a fine strong taste. WINE TASTING Free entry at all vineyards. Frontignan’s town centre 17 My historic holiday There are places that inspire emotional reactions, a town founded back in Roman times. Wandering around the narrow streets of Frontignan’s old town, you can easily imagine its history. From the Gallo-Roman era to the Kings of Aragon, Frontignan is proud its glorious past with its ramparts and fortifications, ancient façades and stone buildings... The Frontignan Museum, located in the 17th century Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs, gives you an opportunity to learn about the town’s history from prehistoric times to the present. St Paul’s Church is the town’s other jewel. Classified as a Historic Monument, it was built as part of the town’s ramparts out of limestone extracted from the nearby Gardiole during the 12th to 14th centuries. Inside you can see a painted beam showing scenes of chivalrous tournaments and the jeu de mail. All this gives Frontignan its unique character, its profound Mediterraneanness, which can be enjoyed just by strolling in its alleys and marketplace or sitting on the sunny terraces of bistros. 18 St Paul’s Church places with a real history… like Frontignan, Cultural Activities THE MUNICIPAL MUSEUM Since 1974, the Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs (1642) is home to the Museum now recognized as a “Musée de France”. The Museum has a very varied collection covering all Frontignan’s history. Most of the objects and works of art have been donated by the local population or deposited by institutions such as the State or the Catholic Church. The collection contains works of art, prehistoric relics from the La Coste cemetery, objects found in underwater archaeology, and a series of objects and furniture linked to our local identity: the famous Muscat de Frontignan and Languedoc jousts, collections of fauna from the Languedoc coastal area. It regularly organizes temporary exhibitions for artists or on the town’s history. Rue du Député Lucien Salette, Town Centre. Around the Thau basin, at a stone’s throw from Frontignan, there are the towns of Balaruc-le-Vieux, Balarucles-Bains, Gigean, Marseillan, Mireval, Vic-la-Gardiole and of course Sète, which is a must. Balaruc-le-Vieux is an old medieval town, with its ‘circulade’ road system. Balaruc-les-Bains, the second largest spa town in France and the only one located on the southern coast. Gigean is a dynamic town, 85% of its territory is covered by natural landscape. Set between the Lake of Thau and the Mediterranean, Marseillan has a privileged position. Mireval is a true Southern village with its own Muscat de Mireval. Sète is exceptional: called the “singular island”, and recognized as an important cultural centre. Vic-la-Gardiole is a typical Languedoc village with forest-covered hills, vines, lagoon and shoreline all contributing to its special attractions. Welcome to the Hérault For discovering the Hérault coast and also its high country full of amazing contrasts, Frontignan is your “base camp”. Far from agitated city life, Frontignan is only 30 minutes from Montpellier, the capital of Languedoc-Roussillon, 1 hour from the Pont du Gard and Carcassonne. Once in Frontignan, you can travel in all directions to the Hérault high spots with all their diversity and wealth of experiences. The Hérault is there for you, totally: there are beaches, of course, but also incredible nature areas that give this region all its charm. East of Frontignan, the Camargue is a magnificent wildlife sanctuary. Dozens of bird species live only in this ecosystem here which is unique in Europe. Lakes line the coast - Golden Lake, Lake of Thau, etc. are all equally fascinating. Mediterranean Vue sur le littoral, à partir du massif de la Gardiole.
