Greetings from the Board President and CEO 2 014 was a fantastic year for Camp Twin Lakes! I am thrilled to step into the position of Board President in the midst of such wonderful progress and achievement. I am grateful to lead an organization which is so strongly supported by our generous community. This past year, Camp Twin Lakes saw an increase in individual donor donations — specifically in the growth of our Camp Counselor Circle Major Donor Society who make an annual gift of $2,500+. We continue to work hard as an organization to cultivate relationships with our supporters, community leaders, foundations and corporations. Each and every donation, regardless of size, makes a difference by allowing Camp Twin Lakes to provide life-changing camp experiences to 10,000 campers through a weekend, week-long or hospital-based day camp program each year. Elizabeth C. Richards President Board of Directors In 2014, Camp Twin Lakes launched a Strategic Investment Initiative to make improvements and programmatic enhancements to our campsites that will help ensure every camper served will have the opportunity to experience similar signature CTL programs, regardless of which campsite they attend. We’re proud to report that to date, we’ve reached $2.7 million of our $2.9 million goal, which includes 100% participation from the Camp Twin Lakes Board. We are working hard to complete the majority of our Strategic Investment Initiative campsite improvements and program additions in time for summer 2015 programming! In addition to investing in our campsites, CTL’s recent strategic plan reaffirms our commitment to invest in ongoing professional development of its full-time staff. Several employees are participating in reputable leadership development programs, including: Bridgespan, ACA conferences and LEAD Atlanta. 2014 was also an exciting year for notable recognition. Eric M. Robbins, CTL’s CEO, was named among Atlanta’s “50 Most Influential Nonprofit Leaders 2013 - 2014” in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. In February, CTL’s Camp-To-Go program received the American Camping Association’s Edie Klein Award for Program Excellence given in recognition of exceptional programming. As Board President, I look forward to helping CTL continue its reputation of ensuring that “Every Camper Deserves All We Have” by focusing on the growth and development of every partner group who comes to camp. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a high quality, impactful, fun and safe camp experiences for children from across the state of Georgia who have a serious illness or other life challenge. I look forward to leading Camp Twin Lakes strongly into 2015, with a firm focus on expanding our successes and continuing to make a meaningful investment in our campers, campsites, professional staff, Camp Partners and our local communities. I hope to do all this while wearing great shoes and having fun! I n 2014, we doubled down on what we do well and invested in our campsites in accordance with our 2013 - 2018 Strategic Plan entitled “Every Child Deserves All We Have.” At CTL-Will-A-Way, we’re adding an equestrian program and a camp farm to mirror programs currently offered at CTL-Rutledge. At CTL-Rutledge, we completed construction of a new team ropes course and an accessible canoe/kayak dock in time for summer. We’re adding seven flexible family and summer staff housing to accommodate even more campers and families this year. In partnership with Jewish Family & Career Services (JF&CS), we’re constructing a new group home to house four residents with developmental disabilities. This endeavor will create opportunities for adults with disabilities in a county where those services don’t exist currently. Continued innovative thinking extends to our Sustainable Teaching Farm at CTL-Rutledge where we continue to incorporate locally-grown beef and produce in camper meals to encourage healthy eating habits. We proudly partner with nearly 60 organizations, each serving a different population across Eric M. Robbins the state of Georgia, to provide customized, medically-supported camp programs for children, Chief Executive Officer teens and adults with serious illnesses, disabilities and other life challenges. We served more than 3,700 campers through our week-long summer camps, and more than 6,000 campers through year-round weekend retreats for a record number of 10,000 campers served. Our expanded Camp-To-Go hospitalbased day programs served 1,200 campers at children’s hospitals and outpatient clinics in Atlanta, Augusta, Macon and Savannah. Since our doors opened 21 years ago, we’ve served more than 100,000 campers. We are so grateful for your investment into our mission, and we’re looking forward to your continued partnership as we strive to make Camp Twin Lakes better than ever. 2 0 14 Ca m p P rogra m s Camp AcheAway Arthritis Foundation: Georgia Chapter For kids with juvenile arthritis and related issues Camp AIM High Foreverfamily, Inc. Statistics are from Summer Camp Partners that reported data. Celebrate Differences. We welcome everyone with an open heart and treat people with respect and consideration. We embrace the ethnic, religious and cultural diversity of our campers, staff, volunteers and donors. When we model our value of embracing differences, our campers learn from our example. My son, Kyle, is 15 years old and has Prader-Willi Syndrome. Most people have never heard of it.There are just over100 documented cases in Georgia. In the simplest terms, his brain doesn’t register that he is full, and he lives in a state of constant hunger. There are other effects of PWS, including an inability to regulate body temperature, low muscle tone which affects Kyle’s speech and motor skills, global development delays, learning disabilities and increased anxiety. There is no cure, and available treatments only treat the symptoms. With all of these issues, I couldn’t send Kyle to the camps my daughter attended. I wanted to give him that opportunity, but I had to be mindful of the obstacles. This summer, he attended Camp Infinity* at CTL. My son who had never had the opportunity to go to camp got his chance. Celebrate the Small Stuff...(and the big stuff, too). CTL embraces opportunities for campers to learn and grow. We know the camp experience is nothing short of transformational for campers to gain independence, have fun, learn to self-manage their challenge, and overcome misconceptions about what they think they are capable of accomplishing. At Camp Twin Lakes, challenges often become triumphs. When we went to pick him up, we were met by three camp counselors who sang Kyle’s praises for being so helpful and considerate with the wheelchair-bound campers. At CTL, away from the stresses of the world with the regular kids all doing regular things, Kyle shines. He doesn’t see the things he can’t do, but he sees the things he can do for others. The love, patience and support of the counselors and staff of both CTL and Camp Infinity is the most touching thing to witness.Tears of joy stemmed from the blessing of knowing that for one glorious week, my kid was in an environment where he was accepted and supported. At camp, he got to go canoeing, horseback riding, and zip lining. Kyle enjoyed bonfires, pool parties and crafts. He even played the piano at the talent show. Most importantly, he felt like a normal kid who got to experience summer camp. –Tammy, parent of Kyle, a Camp Infinity camper *Camp Infinity is a camp for teens with disabilities Bui ld i ng for Tom orrow CTL-Will-A-Way CTL-Rutledge Implementation of our Strategic Plan calls for deepening our impact on each camper, deepening our relationships with our Camp Partners, growing and enriching our sites, and building on our expertise to serve as a leadership institute for our campers, staff and Camp Partners. In 2014, we launched a $2.9M Strategic Investment Initiative to enrich our campsites through adding the following improvements and programmatic additions: CTL-Rutledge is located within rural Morgan County where there are very few opportunities for adults with developmental disabilities. In partnership with Jewish Family & Career Services (JF&CS), the group home is located on site and managed by JF&CS, providing residents with meaningful opportunities to live and work at CTL.The group home is scheduled for completion in Spring 2015. Construction on the new team ropes course at CTLRutledge was completed in time for summer 2014 programs. The ropes course is central to our programming and one of the activities that nearly every camper looks forward to. Like all other program elements at CTL, the ropes course has a customized harnessing and hydraulic system that allows campers in wheelchairs or with other physical challenges to participate in team-building activities. In 2013, Georgia’s Department of Natural Resources annexed 45 additional acres for CTL’s use within Fort Yargo State Park. This new land provides ample space to establish an equestrian program as well as a new farm. Our accessible riding program at CTL-Rutledge is one of our most beloved programs among campers and staff. Not only do our campers learn horseback riding techniques, but the act of riding has been shown to be beneficial for children with specific physical, social and emotional challenges. Over the past two years, our Sustainable Teaching Farm at CTL-Rutledge has been an overwhelming success. Our goal is to replicate the successful farm programming at CTL-Will-A-Way. By establishing a second farm, we aim to provide campers at CTL-Will-A-Way with the same meaningful educational and therapeutic experiences themed around food and gardening, nutrition, environmental stewardship and sustainability. Additional investments in CTL’s programs and campsites include: • • • • • Playground resurfacing at CTL-Will-A-Way Gymnasium Upgrades at CTL-Will-A-Way Storage Units for Camp Partners Multi-Use Housing at CTL-Rutledge Accessible Dock at CTL-Rutledge • • • Weather Monitoring Stations Site improvements and additions at CTL-Camp Dream Technology Upgrades CTL Farm at Rutledge 5,200 4,000 lbs. of grass-feed beef eggs 4,000 70 lbs. of organic produce lbs. of honey Harvested from our Sustainable Teaching Farm and incorporated into daily camp meals in 2014. Make your Mark. CTL is committed to being good stewards of the world around us and our sustainable approach reflects this value. We inspire our campers to become self-confident leaders by advocating for themselves, helping others and contributing to their communities. Vested in Leadership Development Due to the organization’s dedication to long-term development and success, CTL programs, employees and board members have received notable recognition this past year. Several members of CTL’s management are participating in The Bridgespan Group’s Leading for Impact Course. In 2013, The Goizueta Foundation awarded us a $1 million grant to expand our Sustainable Teaching Farm Program at CTL-Rutledge and to establish the Goizueta Foundation Endowed Fund for Institutional Capacity Building over the next three years. The Goizueta Foundation Endowed Fund for Institutional Capacity Building gives us the opportunity to further develop the natural talents and passions of CTL staff members and continue to strengthen the organization’s infrastructure as a whole. For the second year, Camp Twin Lakes’s Farm is featured in Madison-Morgan County Conservancy’s FARMeander — a map-based tour guide that spotlights local producer farms. Eric Robbins, CTL’s CEO, was named among Atlanta’s “50 Most Influential Nonprofit Leaders 2013 – 2014” in the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Josh Cagliani, Camp Dream Coordinator, was selected as a member of the incoming 2015 class of LEAD Atlanta, an eight-month leadership development and community education program. In February, CTL’s Camp-To-Go program received the American Camping Association’s Edie Klein Award for Program Excellence given in recognition of exceptional programming. Elizabeth C. Richards, CTL’s Board President, was selected to attend an intensive social enterprise endeavor, “Governing for Nonprofit Excellence” at the Harvard Business School in Boston. Pamela Stewart, CTL Board Member and Chair of the Communications Advisory Committee, was selected as a member of the incoming 2015 class of Leadership Atlanta, a signature nine-month, executive-level series. Leadership is in our DNA. Camp Twin Lakes strives for excellence in every facet of our organization and we are committed to deepening our impact with each camper and building on our expertise as a leader within our field. As we venture into new programs, we move with confidence knowing that we have been diligent in maximizing resources and best practices before taking the next bold step.
