How it Works
Specialized Cell Design
H2S and H2Sx both exhibit unique absorbance of
infra-red wavelengths. This allows for the direct
measurement of concentration within a liquid
sulphur sample using conventional FTIR
instrumentation and automated macros.
The heart of the analytical system is a specialized
sample cell that can accommodate both liquid and
solid samples. The new cell is indirectly heated,
using an external plate heater. This simplifies the
design and improves overall reliability and
flexibility. In addition, it removes any potential
electrical interference that may affect the FTIR.

Proven Methodology
The analytical system was pioneered by Sulphur
Experts and Alberta Sulphur Research Ltd. at the
University of Calgary. It is recognized as the
fastest, easiest and most reliable method to
measure total dissolved H2S and H2Sx in liquid
sulphur. Each unit is individually calibrated and is
shipped with all required components including a
dedicated computer and associated software.
Quick Results
Results are obtained by our one button macro operation. Simply press the H2S/H2Sx icon in the supplied
software to initiate the analysis. Once the macro
run is complete the spectra is displayed along with
the total concentration of H2S in ppmv.
A typical scan takes less than a minute to complete
and the absorbance spectra associated with each
analysis is saved for future reference.
The minimum reliable detection limit is 5 ppmv with
a typical accuracy of ± 5 to 10 %. The normal operating range is 5 to 500 ppmv, covering all possible
process streams in a sulphur recovery process.
To conduct an analysis, simply add the sample to
the cell through the integrated loading funnel and
heat the unit on the supplied, temperaturecontrolled heating plate. Place the cell in the FTIR
and initiate the analysis using the supplied
software. Once completed, the liquid sulphur is
drained from the unit via the integrated drain valve.
The drain is designed to facilitate safe operation
and minimize the potential for plugging.
