From the Editor...
This summer will be more exciting than most. Well, at least as
exciting as it was four years ago when the Fierce Five took home
team gold for the Women's Artistic Gymnastics team. I for one
cannot wait to see how the returning and new team members
perform under the unimaginable amount of stress associated
with the entire world watching to see if you'll earn a 10. Umm, I
mean code of points.
Watching the Olympics is a great time to spend with family and
friends cheering on the good old red, white and blues in any of
the over 40 events. Let's all go for gold this summer!

Executive BOARD PRESIDENT
The Presidential Address
The Sokol Eye – Sokolským Okem
There is this overwhelming rush of emotion that comes over me when something happens in our organization
that connects the past with the present. One of those “things” that makes you go, “hmm.” I get the chills and feel
as if Tyrs, or “someone” is watching over us. We are so connected to each other with our love and passion for
Sokol, there is no doubt, our souls are somehow connected.
As you have been reading, our Library Archives and Museum Committee has actively taken action to digitize
our collection, find a physical location, and develop a fully working museum and library with programs and
displays. For the summer we hired Julie Barcal to begin the digitization process and access the inventory. Some
of you remember her father, Stanley Barcal who lived for the Sokol organization, contributed in more than
amazing ways, collected his own Sokol artifacts and truly cared about preservation of our history. When I asked
Julie if she would begin the process with our collection, she was nearly speechless and very emotional. Julie
said to me, “you know Jean, this was my dad’s dream as well… to see that American Sokol build a museum and
library… and here I am continuing his dream. I can’t believe this is really happening.” It was at that moment that
I not only felt Stan Barcal in our presence but felt his pride through his daughters eyes. Again, that moment gave
me new energy to know that we are doing a very good thing. Keeping our history alive, not by collecting alone
but by giving it a destination and purpose for others to see. Our story should be told and available to others. It is
up to us to make this happen. It will not happen just sitting in a room. It is a grand collection and is important in
United States history. We will bring this collection digitally and physically to others through our new efforts and
Julie will be a great asset helping to keep the momentum going. If you ever wonder how things happen or why
they happen, you must believe that it comes from your own will to make it happen, chance that it can happen,
and sometimes there is a part that gets a little extra push from those before us who are watching over us. Thanks
Stan for your contributions, for Julie’s knowledge and preservation of your collections and for giving me another
push to keep a good thing going. I hope you all agree that we are on a good path with our efforts.
The new “Sokol Museum & Library”
We have changed the name of our collection to the “Sokol Museum & Library”! We feel this is a simpler name
that will be marketable and internet-friendly. We also decided that it defines our collection better because we
have items from all Sokol organizations around the world. We hope to showcase different Sokol collections
from outside organizations as well as personal collections someday soon. We have also finalized our mission
statement and goals as you will find below. We look forward to more progress this summer.
MISSON STATEMENT
The Sokol Museum and Library is dedicated to preserving the history and accomplishments of the Sokol
movement that was based, from its origin in 1862 in the Czech lands, on a program of systematic gymnastic
training that cultivates a healthy body, sound mind and responsible citizenship. Sokol became a historic
organization that established the Czech culture and Czech identity. The goal of the museum and archives is to
demonstrate Sokol’s contributions to society as well as to gymnastics, physical fitness and sports.
PURPOSE
The not-for -profit museum is formed exclusively and strictly for educational, cultural, and scientific purposes
as stated in the Articles of incorporation. Such purposes shall be carried out for the benefit of the public not for
the special benefit of any private entity or group. The specific goals of the mission are to 1) provide, preserve and
operate a library, museum, and an archives collection, and 2) restore and display artifacts, books, documents,

Summer Safety
As you head off and begin summer fun in the sun, here are 10 tips for keeping kids (and adults, too!) safe this
summer, courtesy of American Family Children’s Hospital.
Block the Sun
The sun's intensity is at its peak during the summer, so it is more critical than ever to apply lotion before
going outside. Not just on sunny days either; the sun's rays can still damage your skin when it’s cloudy. Be sure
to apply sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher) at least 20 minutes before going outdoors.
Stay Afloat
Teach your children never to enter the water without an adult, and watch them at all times when you are near
a pool or beach. Don't allow floaties or other flotation devices to take the place of close supervision.
Wear a Helmet
Unfortunately, many parents still do not insist that their children wear a helmet every single
time they ride their bike. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, 85 percent of
bicyclists killed in 2003 reportedly were not wearing helmets.
Roll with Caution
In addition to helmets when inline skating, skateboarding and scooting, kids should always
wear elbow, wrist and knee pads to prevent injuries associated with falls.
Get Moving
Childhood obesity is rising at an alarming rate. According to the American Obesity
association, more than 15 percent of Americans ages six to 19 are obese. Summer is a
wonderful time to head outside and get some exercise.
Practice Car Care
Don't ever leave your kids (or pets) in the car while you are running errands, even for just a few minutes.
Stay Hydrated
If spending time outside in hot weather is necessary, have your child drink plenty of fluids and take frequent
breaks in the shade.
Watch for Traffic
To promote safe pedestrian habits in your children, first set a good example. Your children learn from your
actions, so if you walk out between parked cars, jaywalk or cross against a light, it is likely your kids will too.
Prevent Bug Bites
Never use insect repellent on infants. For older children, bug spray can be used sparingly, but wash it off as
soon as your child comes indoors.
Play Safely
Always supervise your kids when they are playing on equipment. Teach them safe play habits, including
sitting on the center of a swing and not twisting the swing chains, which can reduce their strength.

A Library, Archives and Museum committee (LAM) was
formed by our ASO President, Sis. Jean Hruby. To understand a
bit of "why?", here are two You Tube videos from the 1941 ASO
Slet, and another from the trip to the 1938 slet by members
traveling across the Atlantic to participate to that final for
decades, now thankfully over. Thanks to Sis. JuliAnn Barcal for
her good work in publishing them. Once you see them, I am
sure you will join us in wishing LAM success in preserving this
awesome history.

I don’t know about you, but I LOVE watching the Olympics! Artistic gymnastics is my all time favorite, but I enjoy
watching every event, game, match, meet and race! I also do some research before so I know some stats and who are
the athletes to watch! Here are some things to get excited about! KP ;)
Here are the TOP 17 (of the Top 100)
Storylines and Athletes to Watch in Rio
From: Sports Illustrated
The 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are fast approaching.
The world’s greatest sporting event will feature new faces (Simone Biles, Katie Ledecky), and old (Usain Bolt and
Michael Phelps). And whether it’s in the pool, on the track, in the sand, on a balance beam or on the roads, one
thing is for sure: history will be made.

Swimming and gymnastics will be

Here are the top 100 storylines and
members
athletes to watch in Rio from SI staff
1. Refocused Phelps Returns To Pool
For so long, Michael Phelps's name has
been synonymous with success in the
pool. The incredibly gifted swimmer has
won more Olympic medals than any
other athlete and easily could have walked away on top after the London Games in 2012. Out of the pool, Phelps
has managed his fair share of problems, including a DUI, which resulted in a six-month suspension by USA
Swimming and a 45-day stay in rehab. Since then, however, he's refocused to prepare for his fifth--and likely last-Olympics. "I think we're going to see him go faster than he's ever gone," longtime coach Eddie Reese told Tim
Layden. "He's going to be very, very hard to beat." - Bette Marston
2. Bolt's Last Stand
Rio will be Usain Bolt's last Olympics, and he will be trying to win the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100-meter
relay for the third consecutive time. (It had never been done twice.) He has been getting ever slower and will
turn 30 on the day of closing ceremonies. Does he have one more show-stopping performance left? The sport
beseeches him. - Tim Layden

3. The Next Great American Gymnast
You may not know her now, but you will. Simone Biles is the favorite to succeed fellow American Gabby Douglas
for all-around gold at the Rio Games. Already the most decorated
female gymnast in history, Biles is ready to add an Olympic gold
medal to her collection.
- Chris Chavez
4. The most-watched Olympics ever?
Here's an Olympic-sized guarantee: The Rio Games are going to be
the most-watched television event in U.S. history. More than 219
million people viewed the London Olympics--the current record
for a single event--but Rio offers a much more television-friendly
climate. Why? First, there's the huge swath of established Olympic
stars (Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps, to name two) competing in
Rio. And then there's the advantageous time zone. Unlike London
(five hours ahead of the East Coast) and Sochi (nine hours ahead), Rio is just one hour ahead of the Eastern
Time Zone). Enjoy live, Olympic fans. - Richard Deitsch
5. Catch Her If You Can
Katie Ledecky made waves in 2012 when she won the 800-meter
freestyle at just 15 years old. And she's only gotten better since.
Arguably the most dominant swimmer in the pool right now,
Ledecky is the first swimmer to ever sweep the 200m, 400m,
800m and 1500m frees in a major international competition. Only
Debbie Meyer has swept the 200m, 400m and 800m free events
at the Olympics before, so Ledecky will be chasing history--and
world records--in Rio. - B.M.
6. A Rare World Cup/Olympic Double
Rio 2016 is the sixth Olympics to feature women's soccer, and
none of the previous five have seen the reigning World Cup
champion win the gold medal. The U.S. has as good a chance as any team to become the first, having triumphed
in four of the five Olympic tournaments. - Grant Wahl

7. Coach K Era Comes To A Close
Following a bronze medal at the 1988 Olympics, USA basketball went pro,
filling the roster--and coaching staff--with NBA stars. But after a bronze at
the 2004 Games, the first third-place medal for the U.S. since that defeat to
the Soviets, the team went back to school, hiring Mike Krzyzewski after a run
of three NBA coaches. Coach K helped turn Team USA around, compiling a
nearly perfect record en route to becoming the first coach to win two straight
golds. He'll look to make it three straight in Rio, his last Games before turning
it over to Gregg Popovich.
- Deantae Prince
8. Golf Returns To The Games
After a 112-year absence, golf returns to the Olympic games, but not without
controversy. During construction of the course--built specially for the event--environmental protesters created
several stops and starts, but American architect Gil Hanse was eventually able to complete a stunning new track

that will stage the men's and women's competitions. Following the Olympics, the course will remain open as the
nation's second public golf course, though plenty are skeptical that a golf boon will happen in soccer-mad Brazil.
- Jeff Ritter
9. (Not Going) Viral
The Zika virus began in Brazil and now carries the World Health Organization's designation as a "global health
emergency." With the disease now implicated in birth defects, women athletes either pregnant or considering
childbirth are likely to skip the Games. Indeed, the U.S. Olympic Committee has signaled to domestic sports
federations that any athlete with misgivings can opt out. How high will the no-go count mount? - Alexander
Wolff
10. More Hardware For Serena?
World No. 1 Serena Williams will be defending a gold medal in singles and a gold medal in doubles with her
sister, Venus, when she returns to the Olympics this summer in Rio. Serena and Venus have not played doubles
together since the 2014 U.S. Open and Serena has said that
she may want to play mixed doubles as well. The 33-year-old
currently holds 21 Grand Slam titles, but depending on her
performances at the French Open and Wimbledon, she could
pass Steffi Graf 's mark of 22 major titles ahead of the Games.
- Jamie Lisanti
11. Still The World's Greatest Athlete
Ashton Eaton enters Rio as the prohibitive favorite to become
the first two-time decathlon gold medalist since Daley
Thompson of Great Britain in 1988 and '92. The only question
is whether he takes a run at his own world record, which he
first established in 2012 and broke last summer at the worlds in
China. - T.L.
12. Brazil Taps Neymar To Lead Gold Push
Remarkably, the Olympics are the only soccer trophy that has eluded five-time World Cup champion Brazil.
That's why the host country has enlisted superstar Neymar to end
the drought on home soil. - G.W.
13. The Waters Of August
As part of Rio's bid, officials touted plans to reduce water
pollution by 80%. Seven years later that promise is in shambles.
Will sailors on Guanabara Bay, open water swimmers off
Copacabana Beach, and rowers and canoeists in the Rodrigio
de Freitas lagoon be at risk? Will events be moved, or will drier,
cooler winter weather mitigate worst-case scenarios? And will
organizers finally relent and conduct viral testing to go with
bacterial testing, or simply whistle past the cesspool? - A.W.
14. Don't Sleep On Gabby
Four years after winning all-around gold, Gabby Douglas is
aiming to make her second Olympic team. A silver medal at the 2015 world championships and victories at the
American Cup and Jesolo Trophy to open 2016 prove the comeback is no joke. The competition with Simone
Biles will be tight, but another win would make Douglas the first all-around champ to compete at back-to-back
Olympics since Nadia Comaneci did it in 1976 and '80. - C.C.

15. Toughest Cuts Around
You won't find a roster in the world with tougher
cuts than the 2016 USA Dream Team. With the
NBA booming with homegrown talent, there simply
isn't enough room in Rio for every franchise talent
interested in representing his country. LeBron James,
Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, James Harden, Russell
Westbrook, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson, Carmelo
Anthony, Paul George and Kawhi Leonard are locks. So
is Anthony Davis if he's healthy. Chris Paul's decision to
bow out (prior to his injury) opens up a guard spot, but
competition will be fierce with Damien Lillard, John Wall
and Kyrie Irving all fighting for the position. - Matt
Dollinger
2012 NBA Dream Team, photo credit: www.haterfans.com
16. Breaking Barriers
It doesn't always take a medal to make history at the Olympics. Ibtihaj Muhammad will do just that in Rio as she
will be the first U.S. athlete to compete in the Games in a hijab, a headscarf worn by some Muslim women. The
fencer has also been very vocal about state of Islam and Islamophobia in the U.S. - C.C.
17. Did You Miss Missy?
At just 17 years old, Missy Franklin stole the show in London with her performance--she
won four gold medals and a bronze, and set a world record--and lively personality. Almost
four years later, Franklin remains a force in the pool, having competed at Cal for two years
before turning pro and taking time off from school to focus solely on the Olympics. She
took home two medals in individual events at the 2015 world championships; can she
better that tally in Rio? - B.M.

DAKOTA SYMONS
submitted by Charity Ruhl,
Director of Falcon Gymnastics (Sokol USA Monessen)
Dakota Symons started Sokol gymnastics at Falcon Gymnastics (Sokol USA Monessen Lodge #47) in
Pennsylvania when she was 8 years old and quickly made the competitive team. She decided to retire from
competitive gymnastics after reaching USA Gymnastics Level 7 at the age of thirteen, however, she never left
the gym. Dakota started as a junior coach and is now responsible for several gymnastics classes ranging from
beginner to advanced. She inspires many young students to share her passion in the sport.
Dakota is currently a senior at Belle Vernon High School. Over the years, she has juggled honors classes and
coaching with several extracurricular activities like Powderpuff football, MIC/SADD, Relay for Life, bell ringing
for the Salvation Army and Fells Methodist Church food bank. She is also became a member of the National
