This image of the Jizo deity was found in
the Shirakawa River in 1954.
This shrine faces Higashiyama Street and the
Old Tokaido Road. The Awata Festival, which
features a grand parade of decorated floats, is
held in October.For the festival, Awata Daitoro
(a float adorned with many lanterns) revived in
2008 after 180 years. The festival committee was
awarded the Higashiyama 3K grand prize in 2012.

This temple was founded by Nene, the wife of
Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who had brought Japan
under unified rule in the Sengoku period.
The temple includes some of the remains of
Fushimi Castle. The Kodai-ji maki-e scroll,
which hangs in the Shumidan, is a superb
example of art in the Momoyama period.

The Gion Odori, a dance performed by Maiko
in the Gion Higashi District is performed
here in November. Usually, it is used for the
Yoshimoto Gion Kagetsu comedy stage.
This temple is famous for its garden
created by Soami and the sculpture of
the Buddhist deity Fudo-myoo and his
attendants is a National Treasure.

Chion-in's gate is a National Treasure; the
Mieido and Daishoro are famous. Chion-in
also boasts seven mysterious things.
Ishibe-koji is a narrow stone path that runs
from Shimogawara-dori to "Nene-no-michi."
The path gives the appearance of a stone
landscape with elements of restaurants and
inns surrounded by stone walls.

This is the mausoleum for Nishihonganji Temple. It is known for the Meganebashi
Bridge, and the large Toribeno cemetery,

9 Yasaka Kaikan (Hall) B2
This temple is the entrance to the Toribeno,
one of the ancient crematoriums in Kyoto. The
sculpture of the Yakushi-nyorai (the Medicine
or Healing Buddha) was made by Saicho. There
is also an ancient well from which it is said that
Ono-no-Takamura (a Heian scholar and poet)
passed between this world and the other world.
The statue in the temple's hall is of the
Buddhist deity Fudo-myoo, also known as
the "Juman Fudo." He is 2.65 meters tall and
wears an expression of calm.

This ancient temple was established by
Prince Shotoku(Shotokutaishi), the first
Regent of Japan. The five-story pagoda is

Buddhism and features the living quarters
for priests built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi and
many other cultural assets.

when she was a hundred years old.

Kashiwaya merchant family and numerous
cultural treasures from the Edo period are
displayed twice a year.

There is a dry landscape garden with beautiful
moss, Chinese bellflowers, and bush clover. It is
said that the writing on Hoko-ji's famous temple

This theater, built in 1937, is an Important
Cultural Treasure. Visitors can enjoy the
traditional theater arts at Gion Corner.
It was here that priest Honen popularized the
Nenbutsu chant and taught another famous
priest, Shinran. It was also a well-known meeting
place for the Ako warriors who participated in
the Adauchi Revenge in Edo period.

to be located in this temple. Temple
treasures will be opened to view for the
Shorai-mukae ceremony (welcoming the
spirits of ancestors) from August 8th.

This is the grave of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
About 500 stone steps lead to a ninemeter high, five-story stone pagoda. The
arrangement of the path is beautiful.

Nobutada. Gionkaku is in the shape of
a yamahoko, or float used in the Gion
Festival. The grave of Ishikawa Goemon, a
chivalrous thief, is in this temple.

the tale of Genji and the Heike Clan and also
has the most famous statue of the priest
Kuya and many superb Buddhist images.

The roof of this three-story vermillion pagoda is
covered with Japanese cypress bark. It houses
the Koyasu Kannon, which is believed to have

wooden building in the world. The principal

This unique shrine offers good luck for
marriage and traffic safety, and has been
collecting votive tablets since the Edo period.

The grave of the priest Shinran is located
here. The Kyoto night is lit up during the
summer Obon Festival of the Dead with
some 10,000 paper lanterns (mantoe) here.
The forest of Juuzen-ji is an historic site
that appears in the legend of Benkei and
Ushiwakamaru. It is said that if you wash
Arai Jizo with water, your sickness will be
cured.

This is operated by the Kyoto Pottery
Association and sells Kyoto-style ceramics
and Kiyomizu Ware products. You can find a
large number of Kiyomizu Ware pottery from
traditional styles to modern styles on sale.

The main image of this temple is of the
Buddhist deity Fudo-myoo. Hoju-ji is
famous for its association with Oishi Yoshio
(leader of the 47 ronin). There is also an
image of the Ako-roshi (the 47 ronin, or
masterless samurai).

This shrine is well known for the protection
of children. There is a rare votive tablet
here that shows a flying fish.
