We have much to offer from a business and family recreation standpoint as well as being a great community to retire to. A solid agricultural and energy economic base means that the Town of Taber continues to enjoy growth and prosperity. We have excellent schools; modern recreational and medical facilities; reasonable tax and utility rates; safe neighbourhoods; clean air and water; and affordable housing make us the envy of other communities in North America. Strategically located just thirty minutes east of Lethbridge, Taber is a regional center that offers a full range of financial services, shopping, recreation, and entertainment. With all the amenities of a larger city, Taber can offer its residents a quality life with the safety, friendliness and hospitality of a small community. When you combine these features with our competitive retail services and excellent recreational opportunities, including the Aquafun Centre, a new skateboard park, and hiking trails; Taber has everything residents desire to fully enjoy life. Maybe that is why our residents display such a great sense of community spirit. The long hours of sunshine make the growing season in the Taber area ideal for agriculture. Potatoes, sugar beets, and of course corn, are only a few of the products Taber agriculture excels at. A strong, stable economy, our central southern Alberta location and our close proximity to the United States are only a few reasons why companies like Lantic Inc. (Roger’s Sugar), Lamb Weston, Lucerne Foods and Hostess Frito Lay are proud to call Taber and area home. In addition to this, we are also a major service area for the oil and gas industry, and now offer a new and growing industry in the servicing of wind power generating facilities. “Taber is open for business and we will do everything to assist you in meeting your needs.” As Mayor of the Town of Taber, I would like to extend a warm welcome and invite you to explore our innovative community. I am sure that once you have been here you will agree that Taber is a great place to grow, to live and to work. The citizens, elected officials and staff of Taber honor our pioneering past, respect and enjoy the community of today while utilizing our vision and skills to lay the groundwork for an exciting future. Located within the South Central Region of the Province, Taber’s trading and economic influence extends in a large radius around the Town and includes massive agricultural tracts, numerous hamlets and villages within the Municipal District of Taber. This centric trading relationship ensures that Taber enjoys a competitive retail sector, is able to offer comprehensive financial and legal options and recreational opportunities that are unavailable elsewhere within our trading area. Taber’s population is approximately 8,000 with an approximate trading area of 25,000 people. As with all communities, our people are the greatest asset. Taber is defined as a rural small town by Statistics Canada. Over the past 5 years, the population in rural Canada has decreased by 0.4 per cent. Taber contradicts this trend and continues to grow in line with it’s own population projections. As of the 2006 federal census, Taber is the fourth youngest small town in Canada with a median age of 35.2 and over 30% of our residents are under the age of 15. The Town of Taber has comprehensive medical care options and an active arts community. Our town boasts eight schools, a hospital, 911 emergency services including a town fire department, emergency medical services and the Town of Taber Police Department. Recreational opportunities abound and include an 18 hole golf course, parks, sports fields and a town owned inclusive community recreation centre. With a comprehensive infrastructure, first rate community services and recreational facilities, the Town of Taber can capitalize on the economic prosperity of today to build a Town ready to face the future. We aspire to achieve a minimal negative impact on our environment and hope to leave a legacy of responsible environmental management to our successors. The citizens of Taber have the skills, spirit and drive to continue to make Taber ... ~ A Great Place to Grow ~ Education Taber provides a number of excellent educational services, from early childhood services to adult education programs. The Town also boasts a strong retail sector as it acts as a service centre for the surrounding rural areas. The Town of Taber lies within the center of a rich irrigated diversified farmland belt, high in heat units and frost free days, with transportation links to major markets. Taber is located only 60 miles (98 km) north of the United States border and is situated 32 miles (50 km) east of Lethbridge and 169 miles (272 km) southeast of Calgary. Evidence of economic growth can be found in Taber’s value added processing industries. Taber and district is home to a number of companies such as: • Lantic Inc. (formerly Roger’s Sugar) • Lucerne Foods • McCains • Alberta Pool Bean Business Unit • Hostess Frito-Lay • Lamb Weston • Gouw Quality Onions • Chin Ridge Seed Processors The Town of Taber experienced record high development in 2007 and 2008 saw new records set in total building permit values. There is no sign of an economic slow down in south central Alberta. People are looking to Taber not only as a retirement destination with great community facilities and shopping but also for the jobs available right now. This is an attractive community to all ages because there is a strong sense of community, great school systems, and a safe community. The Town of Taber not only has a tremendous indoor swimming facility (Aquafun Centre) but also boasts a challenging 18 hole golf course along with many other sports facilities. Other community facilities include a hospital, churches, curling club, skateboard park, Seniors’ Centre, ped/bike trails, and many neighbourhood parks. To summarize growth related activity in 2008, more subdivision applications were made (19) and more residential lots were registered (109) in 2008 than in any other previous year. There was no sign of a slowdown in 2008 as 139 development permit applications were received after a record year in 2007 when 162 applications were submitted. In addition to new areas for residential growth, the Town continues to experience a revitalizing of its older residential areas as new housing stock is constructed to replace older buildings. The Town modified its Land Use Bylaw in 2006 to encourage this form of redevelopment and the local building industry has responded well to the opportunity. The new bylaw also allows new apartment buildings in the downtown and one project is already underway in response to this new opportunity. In addition to the volume of activity, the value of this activity reached a record high of over $22 million, surpassing 2005 (over $17 million) when Wal-Mart, Boston Pizza, and Tim Horton’s began construction on their new buildings in Taber. In 2009, permits have already been issued for a new Frito Lay expansion and preliminary inquiries have been received from another local food 8 TABER LIFESTYLE “a satisfying lifestyle for all ages” processor regarding an addition at their plant. Another new residential subdivision (in addition to the three already offering lots for sale) is also expected to get underway sometime in 2009. Confidence remains high for continued success in the Taber economy despite troubling global economic news. Taber is well positioned for continued long term economic success as it continues to invest in and upgrade its infrastructure to accommodate existing and new needs while maintaining its already strong position as a centre for agricultural services, food processing, and oil and gas. Looking ahead to 2009, continued activity in the residential sector is assured and more businesses continue to inquire about development opportunities in the Town of Taber. The Town anticipates that 2009 will be another strong year. The Town of Taber has a number of choice industrial and commercial parcels available after its 2008 completion of the latest phase of fully serviced industrial lots in the Eureka Industrial Park near Hwy #36. Lifestyle Parks and Recreation Taber is a well planned community that has a number of residential neighborhood parks and playgrounds situated conveniently throughout the town. CONFEDERATION PARK This park is comprised of approximately 11 acres of land and contains a playground, picnic tables, Arts and Crafts Centre, Parkside Manor Senior’s Centre, tennis courts, two ball diamonds, a gazebo bandstand and a new Skatepark. Confederation Park is the central site for many special events such as Taber Cornfest and Canada Day. On Sundays in the summer, many families are found picnicking in the park and enjoying the musicians playing from the bandstand. Location: Corner of 50 Street and 50 Avenue TRAILS Taber residents and town administration identified the need for a walking trail system throughout the town. The Trail Committee, along with Town administration, implemented a plan for the design and construction of a trail system that links major destination areas. Construction of the trail commenced in 2003. SKATEPARK Taber’s newest recreation option, the Skatepark offers world class design that attracts visitors from throughout the region.
