FROM PROVIDING cost savings, making a positive contribution to climate change to increasing economic stability and ensuring the long-term appeal of a destination, responsible tourism practices simply make good business sense. And yet there is no doubt that the industry could do better! Travel and tourism is a topsy-turvy, fast-pace, ultra competitive business and as professionals it is our job to keep ahead of the game. Despite the amazing work by some, there is still a great deal to be done. In fact, we have hardly scratched the surface. That’s why World Travel Market is an important four days in the global industry calendar. The public and private sector of today and the business leaders of tomorrow need to understand the issues at stake. Even in a super high-tech world where technology has made travel processes almost instantaneous, there is still a need to meet face-to-face, to understand about the new trends and developments and to confront and discuss some of the difficult and challenging issues that face the industry today – and tomorrow. World Travel Market has a very specific, major global focus on all things green this year. In order to prosper, middle and senior management need regular, year-round businessto-business in-depth intelligence gathering, analysis and delivery. You need to be inspired, to learn from others, exchange ideas. When developing future strategy, product development plans, resource allocation and sector focus, it is essential to be one step in front, embracing and understanding the environment clearly. Making Meetings Measure Up A major worldwide initiative was launched earlier this year to ensure that everyone working within the meetings, conference and incentive industry (now called the meetings industry) recognises the importance of adopting a form of Tourism Satellite Accounting, measuring the economic global importance of the meetings industry. Only by understanding precisely what is the contribution from this high yield sector, can we hope to generate a universal improvement in its status. On Tuesday - the eve of WTM’s World Responsible Tourism Day – World Travel Market is hosting the UNWTO Ministers’ Summit on Tourism and Climate Change. Up to 300 Government Ministers, senior aides and eminent speakers will come together at World Travel Market to try and agree on a Global Declaration on Tourism and Climate Change. What ever the outcome, it will be presented to the United Nations Climate Change Summit in Bali in December. meetings industry does command the attention that it undoubtedly deserves. The partners, who have been working together for more than three years, have published a groundbreaking report ‘Measuring the Economic Importance of the Meetings Industry. Developing a Tourism Satellite Account Extension’. The report recommends that the industry adopts a form of Tourism Satellite Accounting as a viable means of achieving official universal industry recognition as a major economic driver. To this end, the partners have now appointed a dedicated economist with experience in statistics and economic analysis. He will be working on a number of selected case histories where detailed data on the meetings industry is already known to exist, such as Austria, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Spain and South Africa. It will take some time to adapt TSA, but it will certainly be worth it. The brave new world is here. And we are ready to welcome it with open arms! Tom Nutley Chairman Reed Travel Exhibitions Reed Travel Exhibitions is working with the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to ensure that the World Travel Market Official Catalogue 2007 The first ever WTM World Responsible Tourism Day on Wednesday, in association with the UNWTO, will unite the planet and the industry in a way that has never been done before. The day has already won many supporters, including PATA, the WTTC and well known figures such as Sir Richard Branson and environmentalist Prof. David Bellamy. Whether companies, organisations and individuals are at World Travel Market or not, we want everyone who works in and, like me, has a passion for the international travel and tourism industry, to stop just talking about this crucial aspect of our very future. We need to plan now for a simpler, saner, more sensible hand-over to the next generation by taking action. Serious, long term, committed action. Action that transforms the lives of people and communities; that helps to eradicate poverty; and saves this beautiful, everchanging planet of ours from further destruction by mankind. Above all, we need to be able to hold up our heads with dignity and demonstrate that the industry recognises its responsibilities and is working towards making a real difference. This is indeed the most ambitious project that we have ever undertaken at World Travel Market, but our aim is to catalyse the international industry to make a real World Travel Market is unashamedly, unreservedly, wholeheartedly about successful global business. What ever your interests, we hope that you will find much to help you take your business on to a new chapter of profitability. May I wish you a productive and enjoyable week. contribution and demonstrate action to consumers, by taking a lead on what is the most fundamental issue of our time. Just think what we can do to sustain our world if we work together as an industry. Fiona Jeffery Chairman World Travel Market 5 It is a tremendous challenge but World Travel Market is well placed to help drive this vision of a better kept world. For the past 13 years, we have pioneered the importance of environmental issues, initially with Environmental Awareness Day and latterly with Responsible Tourism Day. WTM’s now World Responsible Tourism Day is designed to inspire everyone working in the industry, pushing the boundaries to a new humanity. That is why the day will reflect some of the brilliant work that is being carried out with the publication of a magazine called Spotlight, provided free to all delegates and will offer many opportunities to get to grips with the difficult issues that remain in responsible tourism. The programme, including debates, presentations, workshops and seminars as well as a networking event at the end of the day, tackles four key environmental subjects: water, poverty reduction, destinations and carbon offsetting. All the main events will be free and located in World Travel Market’s Conference Set, Platinum Suite 4, Level 3. Further more, as we all know, Climate Change is a reality and will eventually impact the industry. The Global Event for the Travel Industry www.wtmlondon.com PRELIM SECTION 17/10/07 13:59 Page 8 What’s new at World Travel Market 2007 The Most Ambitious Universal Day of Action for the Industry The Awards, the biggest of its kind in the world, are again organised by online travel agent responsibletravel.com, in association with The Times, World Travel Market and Geographical Magazine – the magazine of The Royal Geographical Society. THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A YEAR with more focus, more urgent challenges or more competition at World Travel Market. WTM World Responsible Tourism Day will be held every year on the Wednesday of World Travel Market. In 2008, WTM World Responsible Tourism Day will fall on Wednesday 12 November. Because of the sheer global scale of the event, it is inevitable that delegates will be served up a generous helping of information, products, contacts and choice on whatever geographic or sector interest they desire. But in addition to a jam-packed event programme, this year is notably different – with more new worldwide initiatives, speakers, campaigns and top level meetings than ever before. 8 It is designed to provide every World Travel Market attendee with a vital international business backdrop, fuelled by fresh insight, the very latest market intelligence plus an opportunity to confront two of the most critical and pressing issues ever to impact the long term future of the industry: Climate Change and Responsible Tourism. World Travel Market 2007 will see the first ever WTM World Responsible Tourism Day on Wednesday 14 November – a measure taken by the global industry to reduce its footprint. This is the most ambitious initiative ever where the aim is to take real action that makes a difference. The day is being organised in association with the UNWTO and is supported by leading organisations such as PATA and the WTTC as well as leading industry figures such as Sir Richard Branson and well known international environmentalist Prof. David Bellamy. Too often in the past, environmental and responsible tourism has been given no more than “lip-service” with good talk – but very little else. Now the industry is beginning to heed the demands of a growing army of consumers who are calling for a more caring, responsible industry. An industry that helps to save the planet as well as improve the lives of millions. Four key topics have been identified for the day where experts from across the world will be involved in discussion, debate and advice on changing the way we do business. The subjects are Water, Carbon Offsetting, Destinations and Poverty Reduction. Ensure that you also pick up your free full colour magazine, ‘Spotlight’, on Wednesday from the Central Boulevard. The publication, marking the first WTM World Responsible Tourism Day, is designed to inspire delegates with case histories from around the world of excellent responsible tourism work linked to this important initiative. If your company or organisation has not been involved with WTM’s World Responsible Tourism Day this year, ‘Spotlight’ is an invaluable tool to help you to plan and participate in 2008. International Explorer Opens WTM World Responsible Tourism Day The day will be formally opened on Wednesday at 10.30 hrs by international environmentalist, Pen Hadow, one of the world's most accomplished Polar explorers and the first person to sledge alone from Canada to the North Geographic Pole without any re-supplies. The launch will be held in World Travel Market’s Conference Set, Platinum Suite 4, Level 3, venue for the major WTM WRTD programme of events throughout the day. The opening will be followed by the presentation of the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards. The Awards celebrate tourism ventures that make a positive contribution to conservation and the economies of local communities while minimising any negative impacts of tourism. World Travel Market Official Catalogue 2007 For more information on WTM World Responsible Tourism Day, log onto www.wtmwrtd.com. This gives full details of how the industry can get fully involved and how to apply for the WTM World Responsible Tourism Day logo. Additionally a hotline service has been set up to help and advise on +44 (0)1892 535943. Ministers will be asked to consider and ratify a Declaration recommended by environmental experts at the UNWTO’s Summit on Climate Change in Davos, Switzerland in October. The Ministerial Declaration is to be put to the UNWTO’s General Assembly at the end of November and will be a major aspect of the organisations submission to the UN’s Bali Climate Summit in December 2007. UNWTO Secretary General Francesco Frangialli has called the summit “the most important and intensive tourism industry analysis on climate ever undertaken and a key component of the overall global response to an issue, which is, together with Poverty Alleviation, the challenge of our times.” Spa, Health and Wellness Focus World Travel Market’s Spa, Health and Wellness focus, now in its second year, has a new expanded programme to help delegates “tap into” the phenomenal growth of spa holidays. Ministers’ Summit On Tuesday – the eve of WTM World Responsible Tourism Day – World Travel Market attendees will be able to share one of the most important global meetings to ensure the long term future and status of the industry. As part of World Travel Market’s Ministers’ Programme, now in its third year, WTM will be hosting the UNWTO Ministers’ Summit on Tourism and Climate Change. The summit, expected to bring together over 100 Government Ministers, senior aides and environmental experts, will be held at WTM’s Conference Set, Platinum Suite 4 and broadcast to delegates via giant screens in the Central Boulevard as well as to a special Media Room in the International Press Centre, at ExCeL London. Research shows that the industry has grown 40% in the past three years alone. The sheer size of the market is extraordinary. There are now more spas in the US alone (15,699) than there are Starbucks coffee shops in the world (13,728)! ultimate guru of cool – will be at World Travel Market to help businesses make more money from travel and tourism. He is the guest speaker at World Travel Market’s Captains of Industry Lunch on Monday and will also take a free seminar on Tuesday in North Gallery Rooms 6/7 12.30 – 13.30 hrs. Levine claims that the travel and tourism industry has been left behind as the agenda has moved on, while other sectors have been quick to embrace change. Levine, executive director of US consultancy the Avant-Guide Institute, working with a plethora of top international brands, including MasterCard, Samsonite and Deutsche Telekom, believes the secret to businesses making more money, in whatever sector, is being more innovative in the way they respond to cultural trends. He says that as part of the most timedeprived generation in history, it’s very rare to take a step back and look at the way culture is heading, but by doing this the industry will have a better chance of engaging with your customers. World Travel Market is featuring three seminars on the subject and is also encouraging spa activities by exhibitors on their stands. The free Spa, Health and Wellness seminar programme includes: I Sustaining spa credibility – avoiding customer disillusionment. Humanity is currently witnessing - and shaping the most significant paradigm shift in human history – a shift of major demographic, economic, ecological and geo-political dimensions. The world population will increase by three billion people in the first 30 years of the 3rd millennium to 9 billion. Ninety percent of this growth will be in developing countries where the world’s least developed countries are sliding deeper into poverty. A robust global World Travel Market Official Catalogue 2007 economy combined with unprecedented population growth is resulting in an ecological footprint that is over 23% larger than what the earth can regenerate in a given year. This is leading to global climate change, species extinction, insecure energy supplies, water shortages, crop failures and depleted fisheries. To meet the challenges presented by these and other global issues, both world leaders and humanity as a whole must work together in a spirit of solidarity and collaboration. Industry leaders will debate the role of tourism in ‘Building Bridges of Understanding’ as a prerequisite foundation for this human journey into the 3rd Millennium. Just a Drop are also finalising other projects in Sudan, Zimbabwe, Bolivia, Uganda, Phillipines and Chile. Over 4 million children die every year from water borne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and diarrhoea caused by either the lack of access to fresh water or polluted water. Polluted water is the biggest killer of children under the age of 5 in the world. For although we can survive a month without food, we can only survive 3 days without water. It is the very essence of our being. Working with respected organisations such as the Scientific Exploration Society, Excellent Development, Kids for Kids and Hospital Kafue, the Trustees of Just a Drop consider proposals from a wide diversity of organisations from around the world every year. Each potential project is checked in its country of origin and every aspect carefully scrutinised, prior to money being committed. The completion of a project receiving money from Just a Drop is also carefully monitored.
