Consequently there are many more Highly Commended awards this year. In the Sets of labels there are three joint Category winners (a first in the history of the competition). The ‘Best in Show’ and the ‘Marketing/ End-uses Group winner awards go to Collotype Labels USA for its “Kenwood Artist Series label. The judges were impressed not only by the technical excellence of the label but also by its artistic appearance. Using the offset litho process along with delicate foiling. “This label is technically excellent with an almost ethereal look replicating the skin tones of the subject with great delicacy” said Tony White, Chairman of the judges. “It has an almost “old fashioned” appearance evoking the early days of theatre. The dramatic look of the label is enough to grab the consumer’s attention on the shelf”. The judging panel included well known industry experts from Turkey (Murat Sipahioglu), Switzerland (Ferdinand Rüesch), Italy (Emilio Gerboni) and the United Kingdom (Tony White, Chairman), including a packaging design expert from The Netherlands (Lianne van den Berg). FINAT YEARBOOK 2011 | 40 This year a label with an unusual design and die-cut shape caught the eye of the judges who rewarded it with a special “Jury Award”. The printer is The Marzek Group from Austria with the Hirschmugl label which, when applied to a bottle, gives the appearance of a coiled snake with its head and tail prominent. “The combination of the unusual die-cut shape and the glitter (From left to right: Ferdinand, Murat, Tony, Lianne and Emilio) pigmented ink stopped us in our tracks” continued Tony White. The trend towards the increasing number of entries for the Marketing/ End-uses Group continues with more than 200 entries received this year. The Printing Processes Group winner is Pago International from Switzerland for Just Malve – Mauve Bath, a delightfully delicate label which highlights how good UV letterpress can be. The subtle design gives the label a very feminine appeal. The Non-Adhesive Group is won by Stratus Packaging from France for a really well printed flexo sleeve for “Soupe à l’oignon”. The onions look real and the result on a PVC film is outstanding. There were more entries for the sleeves category than in previous years. A device for holding important rescue data for cars is seen not only as a new application, but also as an important contribution for shortening the time for rescuing people trapped in a vehicle accident, possibly a life saving contribution. Simple but effective this “Safety Bag” holds all the rescue data sheets for the type of car being driven. Printed by the Schreiner Group from Germany, and winning entry in the Innovation Group, this shows how the humble label can impact on emergency situations. With this being the 31st FINAT label competition it is satisfying to note that a record number of entries were received with just over 360 from 50 companies worldwide, an eleven percent increase over last year’s record numbers. The table shows the allocation of winners between the different Groups. Designed for an Austrian winery the combined use of offset litho and screen printing and accurate diecutting gives the label a technical edge. The additional use of a silver glitter pigment gives it a tactile feel and added an extra dimension to the end result. marketing and end use group a From the previous year’s FINAT winners 7 received a World Label award including the Schreiner Group, Royston Labels, Skanem Newcastle, Tapp Technologies, Marzek Etiketten, Dow Industries and Skanem Hobro. judges comments on the winners : Best In Show jury award Marzek Group, Austria for Hirschmugl alcoholic drinks This category has two joint winners. Collotype USA for Kenwood Artist Series. The design of this label takes us back to the early part of the 20th Century. The flamboyant hairstyle and the hint of a feather boa in the background are very nostalgic. The label offers everything, delicate skin tones coupled with the contrasting black dress and the touches of gold foiling scattered throughout are the elements which place this label in the top drawer of quality. The combination of UV offset litho and stochastic screening is used to perfection. It is almost good enough to frame and mount on a wall. Skanem Introl SA, Poland for Zubrówka 1L Czysta Wódka The flexo, offset litho, screen and cold stamping processes have combined to produce an excellent label full of interest. The illustration of the animal in a snow scene contrasts nicely with the faint blue trees. The liberal use of cold foiling adds depth to the result. The italic lettering is very legible and the background seal adds distinction. The registration is spot on considering all the elements which go into making this label such a good example. A2: non -alcoholic drinks No winners in this category. A3: food products Wintek Flexo Prints, India for Bon Gold Coffee This is a dramatic looking label using the contrast of the black background and the gold and yellow inks to add interest. The highlighted illustrations add to the quality of the label. Gold ink is notoriously difficult to print with the flexo process. Wintek have managed this well. The white reversed out type stands out well against the background. FINAT YEARBOOK 2011 | The unusual shape of this label grabbed the attention of the jury members. The label gives the appearance of a coiled snake which winds itself around the bottle with the head and tail very A1: Total Group A category awards Many of the winners from this year’s competition will be entered in the World Label Awards competition which will take place just before Labelexpo Europe in September. Highly Commended 41 A4: household products Skanem Skurup AB, Sweden for Sun The quality of the flexo printing is very good with the holographic substrate adding depth to the label. The contrast of the silver substrate, the deep blue background and the red Sun logo gives an almost 3D effect. The white bordering to the type makes it stand out more clearly. We particularly like the dot structure of this entry. Kosangas: A5: industrial products Skanem Hobro A/S, Denmark for Kosangas A6: cosmetics Etisan Etiket, Turkey for Cortex Herbal Therapy Shampoo A very attractive “no label” look label. The basic printing technology is flexo with the addition of cold foiling and a screen embossing with an added sparkling pigment. The result is a tactile feeling which really brings this label to life. The jury liked the delicate colouring of the flower petals contrasting with the centre of the flower and the sweeping lines encompassing the product name. The cold foiling gives the label a definite “lift”. A7: pharmaceutical Universal Print Systems, India for Himalaya Eyecare FINAT YEARBOOK 2011 | 42 A straightforward screen printing job which has high light fastness and is weather resistant. The opaque white film substrate gives the label strength so that it lasts for several refills of the cylinder. The white border defines the edges of the label and separates it from the cylinder which is the same colour as the label. Lamination gives the ultimate resistance to weather conditions. An important characteristic of a pharmaceutical label is the ability to read the very small print which normally includes dosage information relating to the contents. This label meets that criteria extremely well, the small type face is printed very well using UV flexo. The orange colour adds interest as does the silver foil logo. The ability to achieve a good solid and small type reproduction is not easy and this has been accomplished very well. A8: security Securikett Ulrich & Horn GmbH, Austria for TÜV Car Plate The good test of a security label is that it is difficult to replicate. This label uses a combination of flexo, screen and digital printing to achieve the printed result. Add to this the complex die-cutting procedure and the fact that all the operations are carried out on the reverse side of the film, gives the label optimum protection to outdoor conditions. A special foil is used to prevent corrosion. All these procedures would make it very difficult to produce counterfeit copies. A9: booklets Skanem Introl SA, Poland for Oriflame Booklet It is getting more difficult to fit information onto normal single sided labels. This label overcomes this obstacle by producing a six page booklet with all the required ingredients information in addition to more than 30 languages describing the product. All of this has been achieved by over printing a red background in gold on a filmic substrate whilst keeping the text legible using a combination of letterpress and offset litho printing techniques. The use of gold foil on the “cover” gives the label a luxurious look. The swirling background design breaks up the monotony of the solid red. A10: promotional coupons Schreiner Group GmbH & Co. KG., Germany for Consumer label with Detachable Parts. A12: sets of labels This category has three joint winners as the jury could not differentiate between the merits of each of the entries selected. Kolibri Labels B.V., The Netherlands for Brouwerij ‘t IJ This label concept is designed for use as a decorative/promotional tool for packaging. Peeling back the top layer, which carries a message, reveals stickers which can be affixed to various items. The label is a multilayer construction which allows the top and subsequent labels to be removed separately. The design used for this demonstration consists of bold colours which draw attention to the message. Printed using UV flexo the colours are bright and the solid areas are printed well. A universal message carrier. A11: self - promotional labels IPE Innovaciones Para Etiquetajes S.L., Spain for IPE Pigments CheMes M Szperlinski, Poland for Dr. Marcus Titanium Series Stratus Packaging, France for Delpeyrat Magret de Canard Food is always difficult to portray on a label. However, this set achieves that purpose extremely well using the flexo process and CTP plates to produce some mouth watering illustrations. The duck meat looks tender and ready to eat. The addition of green vegetables gives a sort of colour balance to each label. The different colour ways add a touch of individualism to the set. group a award + best in show Collotype USA for Kenwood Artist Series. A really colourful set of peel & reseal labels. The quality of the printing does full justice to the flexo process. The labels represent a family of associated products to a very high technical standard. The complexity of producing a label with de-activation of the This label stood out head and shoulders above the rest of the category winners although it is fair to say that the general quality level in this group was extremely high this year. The combination of technical excellence and an evocative design are the main reasons why this label was chosen to represent this group. FINAT YEARBOOK 2011 | This category is designed to show off the capabilities of the individual label printer. By using offset litho for the main print process to achieve the detail in the illustration and screen printing plus a tactile pigment the label stands out from the rest. The use of the screen image also imparts a fade effect to the illustration which is particularly effective. Good use of optical pigmentation with two attractive designs. This set of labels looks very simple in design but a lot of work has gone into achieving just the right look of oldfashioned authenticity on modern materials. The labels look like paper but are in fact printed on a filmic substrate. The simple colour ways give the whole set a delightful feel reflecting the traditional beers inside the bottles. The letterpress process has been used very successfully to produce this set of beer labels without losing the feel of this small Amsterdam brewery. adhesive and then to achieve resealabilty is to be commended. A really well produced set of labels takes them to the top of the class. 43 category awards B3: screen printing (silk screen) B1: schäfer-etiketten GmbH & Co. KG, Germany for Trinity Créasoin printing processes group b flexographic printing Wintek Flexo Prints, India for Himalaya Revitalising Night Cream The illustration within an illustration persuaded the jury to select this entry. The sharpness of the “internal” box enabled us to read every word and the deep, rich purple background contrasting with the pale green herbs gave life to the result. The use of a little foiling lifts the overall appearance of the label. The reversed out type for the four colour tone areas is spot on. B2: B4: reel fed offset litho Tapp Technologies Inc., Canada for Sea Smoke One Barrel Pinot Noir 2008 rotary letterpress Pago International, Switzerland for Malve-Mauve Bath FINAT YEARBOOK 2011 | 44 The sharpness of the images produced by screen printing over the past few years never ceases to amaze the judges. This example does not disappoint. The small type faces are very sharp and well defined and are totally legible. The use of hot foiling is exactly right and gives the label a nice lift from an added quality point of view. The mauve circles and the Swiss emblem contrast well with the grey lettering. A really nice job. A really delicate looking label with nice halftones and soft flower shades in the background. The highlight dots are especially sharp and the vignettes smooth. This label exudes quality and the sharpness of the small type faces coupled with foiling gives the end result an overall luxurious feel. This is UV letterpress printing on a filmic substrate at its best. Tapp has always impressed the judges over the years with their excellent use of the offset process. Always high quality, always delicate in design. This label is no different. Subtle grey lettering moving to solid black, impeccable debossing and the almost invisible use of clear foiling over the “One Barrel” wording. A really well produced label of the highest quality. B5: digital printing Flexiket A/S , Denmark for ASDA Bed Cabinet A larger than life print using the digital process to its full potential. An almost photographic reproduction. The detail in this large label is excellent. Quality is required and quality is delivered. The glossy varnish gives the label a nice quality lift. The label illustrates the contents of the card board box with an almost lifelike result. The run length proves that the longer press runs can be economical for digital printing. B6: combination printing Kimbells Pack Inc., Philippines for Arengga Coffee Alamid This label is a true representation of combination printing. Several machines, several passes and several techniques all combine to give this very interesting result. The use of letterpress for the basic image gives a nice deep background and a fine range of dot values. The silver metallised substrate gives added quality. The white text using the screen process is sharp and well defined. The delicate rendering of the tactile pigment using screen technology requires the utmost control. Finally the embossing of the outline of the civet cat is in very good register. A real combination print. group b award C3: Pago International, Switzerland for Malve-Mauve Bath Stratus Packaging, France for Manchon Saveurs en or soupe à l’oignon This label truly deserves the group award. This delightful, delicate label highlights just how good the results from UV rotary letterpress can be. The soft tones give the label a very feminine appeal. This sleeve has made the impossible possible, to make onions look enticing! The very controlled use of the halftones with UV flexo on a PVC substrate has given the onions life and depth. The use of green lettering keeps the tone of the sleeve firmly in the vegetable arena. The case shows the well defined wood grain making it very realistic. The small green type faces are easily legible. The whole result would look good on the supermarket shelf. non -adhesive applications group c C1: non -adhesive labels / tags No winner in this category. C2: cartons Kimbells Pack Inc., Philippines for Omega Pain Relieving Liniment metallised box sleeves group c award Stratus Packaging, France for Manchon Saveurs en or soupe à l’oignon Schreiner Group GmbH & Co. KG., Germany for Safety Bag The whole idea of this category is to discover an application need in industry in general and then to meet that need with the application of a suitable label solution which is what the Schreiner Group do so successfully. They perceived a requirement for rescue teams to have immediate access to rescue data in motor vehicles to enable occupants trapped after a severe accident to be extracted quickly and easily. The Safety bag carries specific access data applicable to the vehicle to which it is attached. By using a reflective film the information is easily visible when it is dark. The adhesive attachment allows the bag to be removed for cleaning purposes and re-attached without difficulty. Digital printing on a polyester base is used to produce this label. A truly life saving concept. This label is also the Group D Award winner. FINAT YEARBOOK 2011 | This carton may look straightforward at first glance but digging deeper we find that it is quite complicated to produce. Using UV letterpress and screen in combination an attractive box has been produced which also contains anticounterfeiting features. Once printed with the basic design and the anti fraud images, the metallised silver paper is laminated to a 300 micron board. The final result is a practical box used for exporting a locally produced product. This realistic illustrations on this sleeve “sold” the whole idea of what a sleeve can achieve to the judges. They were impressed with the realism of the vegetables and the appealing look almost enabled them to taste the onion soup! innovation group d 45 HIGHLY COMMENDED CERTIFICATES Group A: Marketing/End-Uses A1 - Alcoholic drinks Adesa Etiquette Bahar Etiket Collotype Labels USA Etisan Etiket & Matbaacilik San.
