I would encourage you to try to have your pictures taken this summer so you will not have any problems making the Monday before Thanksgiving deadline to turn in the picture you want to appear in the yearbook. If you are not able to have your pictures taken during the summer, I suggest at least making the appointment during the summer so that the pictures can be taken in plenty of time to meet the deadline. The yearbook staff would also like to include a baby picture (any age) of each senior in the yearbook, and that can be turned in along with the senior picture. Those pictures will be returned to the student at the end of the school year. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Brian Bratt, yearbook adviser, at 299-3384 ext. 407 or bbratt@vbschools.net. Experiencing the Gettysburg battlefields, the memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and the U.S. Holocaust Memorial and Museum in person makes for the ultimate field trip! A special part of this year’s trip was a visit with U.S. Congressman Bob Latta, at which he was generous enough to take a number of “selfies” with students. At the time of the year we visit Arlington, prior to Memorial Day, we are always privileged to see active duty military personnel placing flags in front of each of the 400,000+ graves in the cemetery. Finally, many students will remember the dinner cruise along the Potomac River, which replaced the Medieval Times experience of past trips. Many thanks to our parent and grandparent chaperones and staff for making this trip such a success! We enjoyed many compliments on our students’ behavior. A $1,000 donation will buy over 500 books for children birth to age five! News from the Hancock County Health Department It is once again time to start thinking about vaccinating your children for the upcoming school year. Any child entering kindergarten or 7th grade will need vaccine updates before the start of the 2015-2016 school year to be in compliance with the Ohio Revised Code guidelines. Tdap is required for the students entering the 7th. We continue to be concerned about the resurgence of pertussis (whooping cough) which is the reason for the Tdap requirement. Along with the Tdap vaccine, we would encourage you to consider the meningitis and chickenpox vaccines for any child age 11 through 18. These vaccines are available at most physician’s offices or here at the Hancock County Health Department. The Hancock County Health Department is now a vaccine provider from most local insurance companies and bill insurance for services provided. If you are interested in scheduling for vaccinations at our office please call 419-424-7869. I would strongly encourage you to call and get these scheduled now. Please don’t wait until August as our clinics are usually filled to capacity. May - Back Row: Eian Still, Kennedy Sterling, Carter Thomas, Luke Bresler, Jose Roman, Sophia Reineke, Aeris Butler. REMEMBER DON’T WAIT VACCINATE Page 14 Knightly News June 2015 Sport News Wow! What a Softball Season If you didn’t get a chance to watch the Van Buren softball team play this spring, you missed a piece of history. Coming off an excellent 2014 season, in which the Black Knights finished 15-13 and were District Runners-up, the team was more than ready to get going this spring. The Black Knights were challenged early in BVC play as the defending BVC champion Arlington Red Devils came to town in early April. It took extra innings, but the Black Knights came out on top, beating Arlington 6-5. That win helped set the tone for the remainder of the year. Shutting out 6 of the 11 league teams they faced, the Black Knights went on to finish 11-0 in the BVC and were crowned 2015 BVC Champions. Not interested in stopping there, the Black Knights earned the #1 seed in the District and hosted a Sectional final game for the second straight year. After beating Holgate to win the Sectional title, the Black Knights headed to Elida for the second year in a row to play in the District Semi-Final. They faced a familiar opponent in Patrick Henry, the team that ousted them last year in the District Final. The Black Knights came with their bats and were able to knock off the Patriots by a final score of 11-1. Van Buren was headed to the District Final once again. With experience on their side and a great group of Senior leaders, the Black Knights beat a very good Ayersville team and brought home the first District Softball Title in school history. The next stop was the Regional at Findlay High School to take on Lakota. With the game being so close to home, there were MANY Van Buren fans at the Regional Semi-Final and it was an awesome experience for the team to play in such a great atmosphere. The game ended with a Lakota win, but the Black Knights fought hard and should be P.R.O.U.D. of all they accomplished this year. Finishing the season at 21-6, the Black Knights won more games than any team in school history. Congratulations on an amazing season! Go Knights! First Place in Extreme Dance & Cheer Competition in Florida Van Buren students Mackenzie Wagner (class of ‘16), Tori Bookwalter (class of ‘17) and Kennedy Jones (class of ‘23) were members of the Co-ed Senior Level 3 Platinum All-Stars competitive cheerleading squad this year and spent countless hours at Gold Medal Gym with their teammates perfecting their tumbling and routine. With their high flying tosses and stunts along with their precision tumbling and dance moves, the team won their division in two of the Extreme Dance & Cheer Competitions this year - first at Kalahari Resort in Sandusky, Ohio, and then in Lansing, Michigan. They also took home Grand Champions for Level 3 at the competition in Lansing. These two wins earned the team full-paid bids to a competition in Chicago in April and the International Championships in Orlando, Florida the weekend of May 9-10 causing Mackenzie to miss her junior prom. The team rallied around her commitment and leadership to turn in outstanding performances both days placing them 1st in the Co-ed Senior Level 3 Division at the two-day International competition in Orlando. Mackenzie has been a Van Buren cheerleader since 3rd grade and on the Platinum All-Stars competitive team for 11 years. Tori began cheering for Van Buren in elementary school then re-joined her freshman year in high school. She has been a member of the competitive squad for 5 years. Kennedy started gymnastics when she was 3 and has been a Platinum All-Star for the past 3 years. Congratulations to these Lady Knights and all their teammates!
