The Professional Women’s Association
PWA is the only group of its kind which
provides women in Rome with their very own
forum for exchanging more than ideas -shaping their businesses, sharing contacts
while forging friendships and offering ways to
support each other’s careers and ambitions –
in short, improving themselves, their work and
their life experience.

Once again we are ready to celebrate the special
woman who, through her participation in PWA
activity, and her deeds to enhance and increase
PWA membership base has earned the title of
WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2011/12.
This year we had as many as 8 eligible women:
Rosemary Aspinall, our longest standing member,
who received 2 Nominations from the Board:
Ambition & special achievement and Culture/
Social Chic; dynamic and full of ideas, one you
can always count on is Maria Grazia Caiafa, who
gave a significant contribution to PWA Seminars
“Da Venere a Minerva” by impeccably
coordinating 400 women employees of Comune
di Roma, and this year co-chairing on Board as
Social Director; Françoise Chotard, ready to
approach her second year as Membership
director, and is always the first person to greet
members and guests at our events with her pale
blue eyes and timeless smile; Swee Heang Khoo,
whose trekking expertise on our Footloose
excursions is second to none, and her quietly
refined elegance a gift for the eyes; Margrit Mau,
always a generous donor of gifts for our raffles,
and who this year again has offered her precious
Aloe Vera products for the greater beauty of the
lucky winner; Sile O’Broin – now third time
adjudicator of yet another 3 Nominations: Media/
Communications/Marketing skills, Competitive/
willing to learn and Commercial Skills – one of the
most deserving Professional women and a great
asset to our Association in many ways; Laura Rizzi,
who received her Winter Queen coronation as
highest scoring participant in our activities and
now receives 2 Nominations for Loyalty and for
Ambition & Special achievement, as we
discovered her talents as Art historian in PWA
Seminars “Da Venere a Minerva” and for IWD in
Tivoli, a worthy and competent co- director for
Social events with yours truly. Finally Marta
Schneider, a little lady with a huge heart, a giver, a
motivator, and full of pepper, who this year
receives a Nomination for Credit rating, always
respectfully dutiful, and a wonderful Public
Relations director which her second term election
to the Board confirms. How true the saying
“precious things come in small parcels”. She has
also donated for the third
time the most
magnificent safari to South Africa, and has
secured CARIPARMA as our sponsor in order to
obtain the Air-ticket Rome/Johannesburg/Rome
for 2 people. We in PWA thank all members for
their contributions to making our Association
evermore Professional, spreading the word to an
increasing number of Women, in the city of Rome,
Caput mundi.
So ladies, this is your big night! It’s your chance to
celebrate 20 years of Professional Women’s
Association in Rome. Enjoy meeting the new Board
whilst networking; enjoy eating, drinking and
listening to the soft, smooth jazz trio live on this
magnificent terrace, let’s toast each other with the

“28 Ways to Rock Your Own World!” by Sile O’Broin
There was a time in my life I was really
disconnected to my own self. I didn't even know
what I liked, what pleased me, not to mention,
what I wanted to do with my precious life. But the
one thing I did know, I was not living the life I
desired. I felt this in my soul. It's not something I
had to know – it was a feeling deep down inside
me.
desires. How do you step into who you really are as
a women and be who you are meant to be? Take
a look at this list and see what you can change
and start working on today.
Once I figured out who I was as a woman, I was so
afraid to reveal this to the world. I was afraid to
dress the way I truly wanted, even as far as being
afraid to wear too big of earrings in case people
talked about me. I was afraid to tell people that,
once, I really wanted to take my own life. I was
afraid to eat super healthy food in front of people
who weren't eating the same way or who were
unhealthy themselves. I thought people will think I
am crazy; too much – too demanding – too into
living a higher quality life.
So, I just kept myself a very small version of me in
hopes I wouldn't rock the boat. In order to not get
people mad, I kept myself safe and small so others
would like me and wouldn't judge me for living a
happy and healthy life.
Has something like this ever happened to you?
Women Who Rock Out Life Authentically …
1. Never apologizes for who she is, what she
wears, what she desires and for what she does
or what she doesn't like.
2. Says what she means even if it pisses people
off.
Many of my private clients used to be scared silly
to express who they are as a woman and what
their place is in this world. They stay quiet; stay in
the wrong place in their lives or careers; carry extra
weight and have depleted energy and bank
accounts. Sound familiar?
3. Lives her life with compassion but doesn't
sacrifice her happiness for others.
Take an honest look at what your life is right now.
When it comes to your body, your relationships,
your personal life, your career - Are you a woman
who is rocking it authentically, or are you hiding
behind the rock? Playing small, playing safe and
hiding behind a rock – doesn't work EVER! I know!!
And it is the blindspot for stress.
7. Asks for what she needs – without hesitation.
I lived behind the rock for a long time. Why?
Because nothing was ever allowed to feel good...I
never allowed myself the pleasure of a job well
done; the pleasure of living a good and healthy
life; of having quality relationships. Living behind
the rock keeps you completely out of alignment
with who you really are; who you are meant to be
and it will never bring you any closer to your heart
4. Has very clear boundaries
5. Is very clear with when she says YES and when
she says NO
6. Lives free from guilt, self-criticism, and gossip
8. Brings her best self forward even when she
doesn't feel like it.
9. Knows that if she is at a restaurant and her
meal comes not to her standard, she can
graciously ask for it to be returned, corrected or
ask for something else – without feeling like she's
been needy or a b%$#@.
10. Knows how to please herself and knows how to
ask others to please her.
11. Is surrounded by friends that support and
challenge her to be her best.
12. Wears larger than life earrings when she feels
like (My private clients did this – it felt so good
to her to wear what she truly desired)
Be a part of it!
Continued: “28 Ways to Rock Your Own World!” by Sile O’Broin
13. Rests and replenishes because she craves it.
24. Continuously adds more color in to her life.
14. Makes decisions without the need to justify
them.
25. Allows herself to connect to her sensual energy a
s women.
15. Knows when she indulges in spa treatments or
shopping, she doesn’t have to hide it from her
loved ones.
16. Spends quality time with her children and loved
ones, free from distraction.
17. Thrives on contribution.
18. Knows exactly when she needs rest.
19. Flosses her teeth, feeds her body with high
quality food.
20. Seeks all things wonderful
21. Doesn’t waste time in drama and chaos
22. Has decided to no longer waste time with
body image issue; rather set her life up to love her
body and support it.
26. Lives in love not in fear.
27. No longer pretends everything is o.k. when it’s
not. She stopped pretending and telling herself it will
get better. She finally gives herself the gift of a
powerful coach.
28. Allows dreams; she is curious; she desires the best
for herself, family, animals and community
So tell me… how will you
authentically start Rocking Your
Life Out? Start today by sending
me your comments on how you
will start. I would love to hear
them!!

guilt.
Guest Speaker: A hint about September
“Designing the scents that make cents” - Marcella Bartoletti
Though our year is coming to
the end of a cycle, you can
still expect our meetings to
continue next year, on the
third Wednesday of each
month, from September to
June. Our programming
director of 2012, Jacqueline
Brassey, is leaving the position
after an excellent year, and a
new member is ready to freshen-up the role from
September onwards. Her name is Francesca Barra,
she is an Italian self-employed Editorial consultant
and her full profile can be read in our previous
newsletter, published in May.
For September we can already give our members
a small teaser about the next conference that is
already confirmed. The conference "Designing the
scents that make cents" will be conducted by the
speaker Marcela Bartoletti, an expert in scents and
how they are crucial to, for example, consolidate
and recognize corporate identities and brands.
She also knows all about scent and creativity and
how important it is that certain products smell
good in order to sell them well (and this goes
beyond just perfumes and creams). She will come
on the 19th of September to tell her story and how
she helps companies to integrate scents in their
business strategy. Marcella Bartoletti founded
MABA—Sense the Magic Happen—in August 2011
and was global fragrance director at Unilever
(2000–2011) where she established the Unilever
Fragrance Capability.
We hope our members have a great summer
holiday, coming back very keen to continue
another PWA year full of interest in our special
guests!
Next PWA Conference:
When: Wed, 09/19/2012 - 18:30 - 21:30
Where: BOSCOLO HOTEL ALEPH—Via di S. Basilio, 15—Rome
(But, before that, on 04/July we still have our last aperitivo!)

“Carol Bourg is the 2012 Ambassador of Telefono Rosa—Congratulations Carol and
PWA” by Alessandra Sorge (translated by Karolina Cardoso)
The chronicles of the
Professional Women's
Association
are
enriched with a new
a u t h o r i t a t i v e
recognition that marks
the value of a path full
of big hits, always in favour of women. The work of
our dear Association, through the figure of
President Carol Bourg, was publicly acknowledged
and praised by the Telefono Rosa, one of the most
important organizations in prevention of violence
against women. Carol has received the prestigious
appointment as Ambassador of the Telefono Rosa
in 2012: "To have chosen violence against women
as a theme on which to increase the effort and the
strength of the Professional Women's Association,
and for allowing us to help women, positioning
other women beside them". The awards ceremony
was held at Terrazza Caffarelli on the 18th of May,
in the presence of numerous personalities from
politics, show business and Italian journalists, who
have done their daily commitment to a
motivational drive to combat violence against
women. The wonderful location in which we were
received gave a breath-taking view over the roofs
and alleys of the Eternal City, the sun was high in
the sky and the air sensed a shy scent of spring
flowers. My thoughts, as probably many of those
present, however, were cured in the flow of ideas
that a little later would come to life. Soon we would
be talking about violence against women,
struggles, discrimination and intolerance, but at the
same time you would have thrown yet another sign
of hope, to cry that together we can win, together
we can make it. Despite the good wishes, the
ceremony began, against our will, with yet another
act of violence which, as you will recall, involved
the young student of Brindisi, a victim of the
cowardly bomb attack. From this sad episode, the
thoughts of the audience moved on the 70 women
who, in 2012, died at the hands of their husbands,
lovers, ex-boyfriends. "Violence against women said Carneri Gabriella Moscatelli, President TF, in the
opening ceremony - is the cancer of our society. It
has no time or boundaries, is endemic and does
not spare any nation or country, industrialized or
developing. The violence does not even know the
socio-cultural differences, because victims and
aggressors belong to all social classes. Elsa Fornero,
the Minister for Gender Equality, has recently
reiterated the importance of a real shot of culture,
and an awareness campaign to the phenomenon
of gender violence that is already active from
primary schools. Picking up the hope and the will of
the minister Fornero proposals of Telefono Rosa, I
turn on my conviction that each of us can make
inroads even greater sensitivity to the issue of
violence. "With this nomination - said Carol Bourg the PWA must feel part of the actions of the
Telefono Rosa. Our Commitment - goes – it is not
accidental, but stems from the sad reality that
surrounds us, one of violence and silence." This may
make each of us feel differently, with a sense of
belonging, usefulness, openness, generosity that
enriches us inside. This hemorrhage of death and
violence that is affecting our society must be
stopped and corrected, so that violence against
women does not become a practice. Among the
many awards, the PWA was the only association
which, in the last 5 years, has been credited with
having contributed actively to the side of the TR.
Among others, the singer Marco Meloni, author of
the song "Domani ho 40 anni" (Tomorrow I have 40
years old), has his music available on I-Tunes and
Amazon, and the funds raised shall be entirely
destined to support the multiple activities of
Telefono Rosa. The song is really beautiful; I advise
all of you to hear it!
Summer Party Special
The PWA supporters for the 20th Anniversary of the Association
A non-profit association is not able to hold itself up
without having supporters. Some as members,
some as Board members, some as contributing
speakers and some as sponsors. This year for the
summer party we decided to have a symbolic and
glamorous party that could represent the
importance that PWA has reached as an
organization in Italy dedicated to women, made
up by women. To support us in our venture, the
party has received very special help of the Board
but also of sponsors that decided to give a little
something (in most cases, a big something!) in
order to help raise funds for the organization and
for the Telefono Rosa. We are proud to mention
that the prizes in the raffles and the silent auction
were donated by the following partners:
 Baglioni Hotels
 Cariparma
 D’Appollonio Photography
 First Art Hotel
 Garonga Safari Camp - Lezard Bleu Guest House Madikwe Hotel -Through Marta Schneider
 IMATE Mexican Fiberglass and Composite
 Maggiore Italia
 RCI Resorts —Through Vera Weill-Halle
 Westin Excelsior – Via Veneto
Besides the institutional sponsors, Barbara Lee,
Laura Rizzi and Margrit Mau are our members that
also decided to come forward with sponsoring
prizes, as well as Cristianne Alvarez, our JCU intern.
We would like to express our most sincere and
warm THANK YOU!!!
Highlight of the month: D’Appollonio Photography
“The sponsoring photographer for the Summer Party 2012” - Written by Laura Rizzi
I’m very glad to introduce a new friend of PWA, Lara D’Appollonio founder of D’Appollonio Photography
and I would like to give a big thank you to her because she will be a technical sponsor in our 20th
anniversary summer party.
I met Lara in a PWA-PPU event some months ago and I was impressed with her professional carrier. Lara is
a young and brilliant Italian photographer who has created, in the centre of London, an agency that’s
experienced in promotional photography, advertising and communication. The agency works with
professional equipment providing photographic services of the highest quality and innovative solutions to
a wide range of clients. Starting from 2011 Lara will became a member of the Royal Photographic Society,
an educational charity promoting both the art and science of photography. Lara is expert in many types
of photos: PORTRAIT AND EVENTS, FASHION AND PRODUCTS, INTERIORS AND ARCHITECTURE, ART
PHOTOGRAPHY.
When you visit her website and specifically the portfolio you can discover the Lara’s world full of fabulous
images: portraits of famous actors and actresses, beautiful landscapes and fantastic dresses; so I agree
with Lara’s words when she says it’s necessary to “Give photographs the importance they are worth, they
will be the successful keys of your business or they will simply preserve the better colours of your life."
In 2012 Lara has decided to open the first branch of D’Appollonio Photography in Rome, so welcome
home and good luck for this new activity!
New Members!
PWA continues growing, and this month we are happy to
welcome Francesca Barra as a new members to our
association! Have a great year with us!
