MASWA MARKETPLACE
MASWA TEST KITS
Free water testing
Do you know that we now have a new Forum
called MASWA Marketplace? This is similar to
how RTAW members used to sell their stuff
before the classified was brought in.
MASWA members are able to bring along water
samples to any meeting and test their water.
This is handy to verify your own test kits, or to try
a kit you don’t have at home.
If you have anything for sale or trade or you wish
to look at what is available, even from our
commercial members, then this is the place to go.
The kits are mainly Salifert
tests and include
pH, Calcium, Carbonate
Hardness/ Alkalinity,
Nitrate and Silicate.
You can find all the information at the following
link. Maswa Marketplace
Chris also brings along his
Phosphate Light Meter and
MASWA now has a Refractometer to test the
salinity of your water.
This is a great free resource so be sure to take
advantage of it.
If you are unsure of how to test your water, bring
along about 100ml and ask for help (also free!)
DID YOU KNOW?
That the Oarfish Regalecus glesne is the longest bony fish in the world?

Last Months Meeting Rundown...
Last month’s meeting was at Chris Kolzan’s place in Ballajura. Chris has a beautiful 600 liters six sided tank
with quite a few gadgets that he builds, including those Luminac look alike reflectors.
Chris is very much into hard SPS and you would never catch him with one of those soft coral, which he
called ‘flubber’ in his tank! Those who attended are amazed by Chris’s setup. ☺
Congratulations to all prizewinners!

Top Ten Reasons You Should Not Have Picked Up This Hobby...
10) Because every time I walk into a local fish store, I seem to lose $100.
9) Because student loans are for books, food and rent... not for protein skimmers, two-part solution
and frags.
8) Because your boss isn't always receptive to, "I will be in at noon tomorrow because I have a coral
being delivered that I have to inspect and acclimate before the "'Arrive Alive" guarantee is voided."
And even less receptive when you call him at noon and tell him that FedEx didn't deliver it on time
and you have taken the whole day off. And don't forget the fact that the coral cost as much as the
workday you just wasted.
1) Because now I’m single…

The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Newbies
As a corollary and companion to WaterKeeper’s Bogus Information article from last issue’s column,
the intent of this article is to reinforce habits that are important for newbies to adopt. Certainly,
nothing contained in this article is new or revolutionary. On the contrary, this article focuses on the
well-established behaviours and practices that experienced reefkeepers often take for granted, but
which may not always be obvious to newcomers. In addition to staying with mainstream concepts, I
am purposely avoiding recommendations about specific equipment or practices – rather than argue
why one water change schedule is better than another, I aim to give newbies a set of guidelines
they can use to make decisions on their own. So, I present seven habits that will help you, as a
newbie, become highly successful.
