Dear South Side Brushes Painters,
Once again we had a WONDERUL and exciting Winter Elegance Party in January. A “huge” tanks to Cheri Putz and
Nancy Carley, Everyone received
a tea cup pin, painted by Nancy.
Our Favors were Tea Pots at every
table and each party goer received a different tea
cup with a tea bag and goodies. The installation of
the new officers by Geri Radon and presented by
Sandy Glowinke, was very creative, with a tea
theme also. We had delicious food and played
bingo. A “ Big thank you” to Cheri and Nancy for a very successful party.
Our raffle was a success as we received many wonderful hand painted items
from our members.
At the party we all learned that Cheri Putz, was our “Star of 2009”. Cheri has
done so much for South Side Brushes, from donating items for all our meetings, to fund raisers (Yankee Candles). Whenever you need a helping hand
Cheri is there to help out. She certainly is a “Star”.

We will be having our first seminar, which will take place before the newsletter
comes out. Jane Drynan is our teacher. Jane has travel taught for many years
and also teaches at Martin Weber’s booth at all the trade shows. As many of
you know she is a fun person and a fantastic teacher, so we are all assured of
having a great time.
Our March paint in will be taught by Marge Coughlin who
has taught in our area for many years. She will be teaching a
technique of bleaching the surface and then will teach flowers
done with colored pencils, within the bleached area. South
Side brushes would really like to thank Marge for showing
her technique.
We will be starting our fundraisers for the year, thanks to
Judy Stahl. Judy has searched around for different ideas and
will be presenting them in a timely fashion. Please see her article. We all need
to help out by participating. She is featuring items that can be sold outside of

the chapter. As you all know the money from the fundraisers go to further our education
in decorative painting.
In April, Judy Diephouse, Lynne Deptula’s partner will be visiting us for our
next seminar. Sue Taylor has been working hard to come up with projects that will
please everyone. We have quite a few for Saturday’s
class, but could use a few more in Sunday's class.
Please see her article.
Our new 2010 Board is in place and we are all working together to present exciting ideas at our meetings
and seminars. Any suggestions will certainly be appreciated.

PUBLICITY
We are at a stand still for publicity. We have been passing out brochures
at local libraries to interest people in coming to South Side Brushes. So
far we have not been too successful.
If anyone has any suggestions on how we can reach painters, that have fallen by the
wayside, we would truly like to know. If you know of anyone who would like
information please contact us.

MAY PAINT-IN
Our MAY PAINT-IN, Garden Sampler on Fabric, Pattern by Vicki Rhodes, CDA, Taught by Georgia
Wanda, is a darling, whimsical and colorful
pattern which Georgia painted on a tote bag.
Georgia is one of South Side Brushes’ best
fabric painters. I asked her to give me a little
biography of her painting history and, she
wrote it so well, I am including it, verbatim, as
follows:
MEETING THE PRESIDENT…..
In 1977 while window shopping at Brementown Mall I happened to see a tole
painted milk can in the window of American Handicrafts and asked the clerk
how much they wanted for it. After learning that it was not for sale but painting
classes were being offered I signed up for what has become a lifelong love of
painting – fabric painting in particular. (When you have an extra half hour I’ll
tell you about my experience at American Handicrafts.)
My classroom experience has taken me from Tinley Park to Carol Charifisi’s
Studio in Green Garden (oils), A Touch of Umber in Chicago (acrylics), Judy
Alyea’s Shop & Home Studio in Lemont (Jo Sonja Folk Art), 135th St. in
Crestwood (Classes, Books & Supplies), The Toad Stool in Beverly (Pattern
Packets & Books), Maureen Schultz’s Berry Bucket (everything over my head
but I loved to visit the store – purchased lots of wood pieces), HOOT (Trade

Floor & Classes), several National Conventions and finally to my encounter with
our President … BARB URBAN at her store BARB’S PAINTIN’ PLACE in
Palos Heights. She’s been stuck with me for decades. To my sorrow these
locations have closed.
South Side Brushes is very fortunate to have Barb Urban as our President and one
of many wonderful teachers associated with our club. We don’t have to look very
far to be associated with our very own “Big Brushes”.
My final thought: “Take as many classes and have as much fun as possible
through your love of Decorative Painting – too many people in this world never
find an outlet for their stress or a true passion. If a project appeals to you – SIGN
UP & GIT-IT-DONE!”
I’m looking forward to our time together in May. Thanks for the opportunity.
SUPPLIES FOR GARDEN SAMPLER ON FABRIC:
Surface: Surface of your choice: Tote, Shirt, Apron, etc. which should contain at least 50% Cotton. If using a Canvas Tote, you may want to get one at Hobby Lobby and use your 40% off coupon or buy when
they have all of their canvas items on sale. Otherwise, think outside the box – the elements of the design
could be adjusted and used on many fabric items. If you would like to paint this project for the Women’s
Crisis Center, you may obtain a tote from Georgia or Pat Brown.
Paints: DecoArt SoSoft Fabric Paints:

Christmas Red or Soft Red

Brushes: Your normal brushes – I use stiff fabric brushes and a scrub technique, but
your usual acrylic brushes will work – in some cases, the older the better.
Miscellaneous Supplies: Fine-tip Permanent Marker (Sharpie, etc.), Black Transfer
Paper or Black General Charcoal Pencil, Paper Towels, Water Container, Palette Paper,
and Textile Medium (if you like a softer look).
NEWS FLASH: South Side Brushes has a new Ways and Means Committee which will be providing a
new optional service for our members. Starting with our May Paint-In, this Committee will order your
paints and deliver them to you in time to paint Georgia’s Garden Sampler on Fabric. So…take an inventory
of your SoSoft Fabric Paints and, instead of traveling all over town to gather up the paints you need for this
project, bring a list to the March Meeting, prepay for your order, and leave the rest to the Ways and Means
Committee! Isn’t this great?
You may sign up for Georgia’s May Paint In, Garden Sampler on Fabric, at the March Meeting or you may contact me via phone or e-mail. In the meantime, Happy Painting!
Denise

2010 SSB FUND RAISER
We have wonderful members that support our club in many ways. One of those ways
is to support our raffles and annual fund raisers. This year you have 3 fund raisers to
consider for your support. Remember all our profit goes to reduce our seminar expenses.
Here is what we have available for our March 20th meeting.
GOLDEN OPPORTUNITIES COUPON BOOKS - Hundreds of coupons for restaurants, food and desserts,
entertainment, sports and accessories, personal care, home care, automotive, and a potpourri section
(jewelry, Hallmark, florists). Cost: $13.00 - coupons valid until Oct 1, 2010. Many buy one meal get one
free meal deals pay for the book. Books will be sold at the March meeting. Checks should be made out to
SSB. You can take some to sell, if you do not sell them, you can return them to us at no cost to you.
YANKEE CANDLES - Back by popular demand we will have catalogs for the spring and summer collection also at the March 20th meeting. There will be catalogs with order forms included
for your selections. These must be returned to us by April 9th in order to have them in plenty of
time for Mother’s Day and other spring and summer gifts.
CARSON’S COMMUNITY DAY SALE - In the fall we will be giving out coupon books for
Carson’s sale to benefit community not for profit groups (like us). These books will be $5.00 each and include a $10.00 off coupon, percentage off coupons and many specials. As with the other fund raiser
events, we do not have to pay for the coupon books and we get to keep the entire $5.00.
If you cannot attend the March 20th meeting, please contact one of us and we will arrange to mail or get the
coupon book or catalog to you. We know money is tight, but these are great deals and it supports us and
our club. Thank you in advance for your help!

SEMINAR INFORMATION
Judy Diephouse – April 17 and 18, 2010
Judy Diephouse lives in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area. She met Lynne Deptula at a local chapter meeting of the Society of Decorative Painters. Soon after meeting, they formed the partnership known as Distinctive Brushstrokes. They began painting for regional art shows and teaching at various regional and national conventions. Eventually, their business evolved into designing pattern packets, writing decorative
painting books, and travel teaching. The rest they say is history. You can see Judy at National Convention
and HOOT both teaching classes and at her booth. You can view the latest work of Distinctive Brushstrokes, download a free pattern and check their seminar schedules at www.distrinctivebrushstrokes.com.

WAYS & MEANS
Something New Okay! Here’s the scoop! SSB will have a new committee called Ways &
Means. For those who don’t know what this silly sounding committee is for,
let me explain. We will acquire items to sell to you, our members. Any bit
of profit we make will go into our treasury to help with education expenses.
We want to make this committee work for you, the members. We will have
a “Suggestion Box” so you can suggest which products you’d like to see on
the table. We are still in the planning stages of how we can make this committee work for you, and will have more information at the March meeting.
Until then, keep painting!!!!!!!!

RAFFLE
We would like to thank everyone who has donated and/or purchased tickets for the raffle at our Winter Elegance Party. We sold $690.00 in raffle tickets. You ladies have
been wonderful in your donations and ticket purchases. The hand painted raffle items
always seem to get the most excitement and the winners are very appreciative of your
work. We have enjoyed the past two years being the co-chairs for the raffle, especially the going shopping
part of our job. We now turn the raffle over to Susan Hanek . She is full

STAR OF THE YEAR
Thank you for the Star of the Year Award. I was quite surprised and truly moved by the honor. I really enjoy helping out at the club and hope that my enthusiasm will move others to volunteer also. Sometimes you
have to step out of your comfort zone in order to
grow. It is all of us that make South
Side Brushes a great club.
With gratitude,
Cheri Putz.

CRISIS CENTER TOTE BAGS AND DONATED ITEMS
Attention: South Side Brush Members
Pat Brown & I have the honor of heading up the Tote Bag Promotion for our
club and will do our best to make 2010 a HUGE SUCCESS.
Please take a second look at the list of articles needed to fill the Painted
Totes - think about waking up in the morning in a location other than your
home and wanting to brush your teeth, comb your hair, shower, etc. and all the time knowing that you left
home with just the clothes on your back. Our goal is to make the life of the ladies & children housed at the
center just a little easier. If there is something you can think of that is not listed but might be a good item to
include in the tote donate it & let the Crisis Center decide.
Alberta has ordered our 2010 supply of bags and they should be available for the March meeting. Pat & I
will have a few bags painted to begin our term and will also have some ideas & patterns (easy to paint) for
those of you that might like to use the examples.
If you have any questions OR SUGGESTIONS I'll take all the help I can get. My cell is 708-539-1561 and
email: gkwanda@att.net

a beautiful necklace made by Sandy for all
her donations to the Crisis Center.

HOSPITALITY
As you well know South Side Brushes will not be providing the beverage at lunch. We will still have
coffee and tea throughout the day.
Starting with the March meeting it’s bring your own lunch. For those who do not bring a lunch we will order
out. A sign up sheet will be at the door with a few choices of sandwiches and chips. Hope to keep the cost
low. We have not decided on where we will be ordering from. I will inform you a couple of weeks prior to
the meeting and as always snacks and desserts are welcome.
I’m looking for volunteers to help with the order taking at the front door, setup and clean.
Please contact me by phone or email.
