After a Tremendous 2015…
Some years, from an agent’s perspective, are special. Last year was
one of those for us. The international launch and joint publication
of David Lagercrantz’ Det som inte dödar oss/The Girl in the Spider’s
Web taught us a lot, and it showed that hard work, patience and longrunning collaborations between international publishers pay off.
That the whole can be bigger than its parts.
After a year such as that, one would almost expect a quieter season.
But our spring rights catalogue is teeming with exciting books. Highlycurrent non-fiction, a fascinating debut thriller, a real Parisian novel
(in Swedish!), new vintage from our literary bestseller, and The Love
War of the Century. Talk about great books of spring!

The brightest star of contemporary Swedish literature!
Getting Things Done
Maria lives with her husband Anders and their
two children in a two bedroom-flat in a midsized northern Swedish town. It is the 1970s,
and Maria has cut down on her working hours to
attend a distance course in art history. A chance
at something greater, something just for her.
tive behavior become a downward spiral towards the inevitable nervous breakdown.
She’s failing at life, and the thought of her
failure makes her not even want to try anymore. But the family remains, calling her
back to them.
At home the demands and musts, real and imagined, press upon her. Anders wants a house
and maybe another kid, but her coldness and
absent-mindedness these days makes him
hesitant. Fredrik is growing up quickly, distancing himself, staying out with friends or
on his room. And Siri, still just a child, but
with eyes that see, that understand more
than Maria would like. The home that needs
the constant attention and care; and the job
where the hours are never enough; and the
studies that never get done… The glass and
the bottle and the pills that make it all easier.
Ta itu is a powerful portrayal of how women’s
conditions and modern social patterns don’t
always go together, and how difficult it can
be to fulfil the roles that have been given.
In 2016, Norstedts republishes this modern
life drama following the immense success of
Kristina Sandberg’s Maj Trilogy and the insatiable demand from readers and booksellers across the land for more from Sandberg’s
pen. Maj has become a literary phenomenon
of national importance, and Kristina Sandberg is now one of the brightest shining stars
of contemporary Swedish fiction.
Kristina Sandberg
Kristina Sandberg (b. 1971) is a psychologist and author. She made her literary
debut in 1997, and is generally regarded – by critics and readers alike – as one of
the most important contemporary Swedish writers.
Sandberg has been awarded numerous prestigious scholarships and prizes, including the finest national literary award: The August Prize for Best Fiction in
2014 for Liv till varje pris/Life at Any Cost, the third instalment in her trilogy
about houswife Maj.
The Maj Trilogy has sold more than 350 000 copies in Sweden to date.

The Maj Trilogy – a Literary Phenomenon
In 2010, Norstedts published the first instalment in Kristina Sandberg’s trilogy about
housewife Maj – Att föda ett barn (Giving Birth). It was followed in succession by
equally acclaimed Sörja för de sina (Care for One’s Own) in 2012, and Liv till varje
pris (Life at Any Cost) in 2014 – for which she was awarded the finest national literary award: The August Prize for Best Fiction. The Maj Trilogy has sold more than
350 000 copies in Sweden to date.
Translator B.J. Epstein: “Kristina Sandberg might be thought of as Sweden’s contemporary Virginia Woolf. The beautifully poetic language, the attention to women’s
lives, the psychological depth and perspicacity – all these aspects are reminiscent of
Woolf, but here in an updated and spare Scandinavian style.
The trilogy follows Maj as she moves through her life: first as a single working
woman; then pregnant and with no choice but to marry a man she scarcely knows;
and through to her years as a housewife with an alcoholic husband, two children, an
array of in-laws from a decidedly different background and class form her own. Maj
herself may not think her story remarkable, but Sandberg’s talent is to give voice to
previously untold tales and to highlight the vitality of everyday details. Maj’s journey
is fascinating for what is shows the reader about women’s roles and opportunities in
mid-20th century Sweden, and it is moving in portrayal of Maj’s experiences, frustrations, and joys.”

“One of the most sensitive psychological realists in contemporary Swedish fiction /.../
It is complex but not complicated, and it
confirms Kristina Sandberg’s position as one
of the most sensitive psychological realists
in contemporary Swedish fiction.” Svenska
Dagbladet
“Kristina Sandberg’s trilogy about Maj is a
series of books that should, both literarily
and when it comes to the topic, get more attention than that other person… what’s his
name again… Knausgård. Maj’s struggle is so
ridiculously more interesting to me and my
sisters. Sorry, Karl Ove.” Borås Tidning
“Liv till varje pris has enormous energy and
vitality. Sandberg elegantly utilizes – and
twists and turns – some of the genre’s more
overused tools to create something else,
something new, and in addition, something
uniquely personal. She has her own voice, a
unique literary tone. It is even more noticeable and convincing in this new novel. The
trilogy is not only one of the most arresting
and intimate women’s portraits written in
recent times.” Helsingborgs Dagblad
“Kristina Sandberg’s final installation in
the trilogy about the housewife Maj from
Örnsköldsvik is as well written as the earlier books, as dense and suggestive. And the
angst is so heavy that the lines almost give
way.” Fokus
“Kristina Sandberg has written an impressive
trilogy that lends its voice to a story about
a marginalized majority. It is strong and insistent and moving. /.../ The dual narrative is
particularly well suited to address questions
about then and now. They are never over
simplified, nor are they easily answered because they are not simple questions. All the
more important to keep them alive.”
Svenska Dagbladet
“This generation raised today’s people, and
those who follow behind need to read Sandberg if they want to understand why Maj’s
home is still such a loaded political and feminist scene. And why Kristina Sandberg must
get the August Prize this fall.”
Dagens Nyheter

Waiting for Monsieur Bellivier
At 73 Boulevard des Batignolles, Mancebo tends
to his little grocery. He lives with his wife Fatima
in a flat just two stories up from the shop and
spends every afternoon with his cousin Tariq. A
content life of long-accustomed habits and routines, where every conversation follows the same
groove.
Then one day Madame Cat turns up at the
store, giving Mancebo a mission. Against
payment, she asks him to spy on her husband, who she fears is having an affair. Surprisingly, even to himself, he accepts and in
a beat Mancebo’s life if changed forever. The
mission causes Mancebo to start noticiing
the world which passes outside his shop. He
becomes attentive, curious, and soon aware
also about other things around him, making
him question all he’s taken for granted about
his loved ones.
Not too far away the story’s ‘I’, a freelance
journalist named Helena Folasadu, is sitting
at a café. She’s in the middle of writing an
article on ‘top sights in Paris’ when a man
comes up to her and asks if she is waiting
for Monsieur Bellivier. At first she refuses,
but then an impulse makes her say yes. Next
thing she knows she has accepted a job to forward cryptic emails to Monsieur B at a desk
in an otherwise empty office floor. The prospect of a scoop attracts her, but perhaps even
more so the considerable pay she has been
promised at the end of the three week contract period. Every day she goes to the office,
and every afternoon a big flower bouquet
awaits her in the reception. To take it home
doesn’t feel right, so sometimes she gives it
away, sometimes she leaves it on an unattended grave at the Jewish cemetery close by.
But even an innocent gift such as a bouquet
bear consequences and soon Helena is drawn
into other people’s lives and dramas, and new
bonds of friendships are formed. And there
is still the mystery of Monsieur B to reveal.
In chapters by turns we follow the two thre-
ads of action as they weave together. The plot
is funny and exciting in an alluring Godotstyle, set in a well-captured and vivid Paris
filled with interesting and unique characters.
It is a genuine tale about a city and the people who live there, and about chance, suggestive of Paul Auster’s early works and Short
Cuts. Britta Röstlund’s novel debut is a tour
de force, and with heightened curiosity and
fascination we follow Mancebo and Helena
all the way to the surprising end.
From the sample translation:
‘Are you waiting for Monsieur Bellivier,
madame?’ The question was asked formally,
as if the answer itself were unnecessary. The
question was more of a set phrase, a greeting or a message. Thinking back, the words
were more of a code than a question. There
was no hope in it, nothing personal, no emotional expression whatsoever. I shook my
head quickly, almost instinctively. The man
looked at me, as if to give me time to change
my mind. He took several steps back and returned to his place in the middle of the café,
then started scanning the customers again.
I studied him, and became convinced that
it must be a woman who was waiting for
Monsieur Bellivier. All of a sudden he was at
another woman’s side, asking her the same
question. She shook her head. I put a full
stop at the end of a sentence and studied the
woman. She had brown hair in a pageboy
style, like me. /.../
The man was still standing in the café. He
had decided to find out who was expecting
Monsieur Bellivier. That was when I had the
idea. It was a banal act in itself, but it both
frightened and attracted me. The man was
looking out over the café guests again. I beckoned him over. The first step. A slight movement of the hand. He did not look surprised,
more embarrassed that I had not waved him
over sooner.
‘Yes, I’m waiting for Monsieur Bellivier.’

The Love War of the Century
A marital break-down in the mendacious paradise of equality. Two voices: a woman and a man
who have lived together half a life.
Through the dialogue you can hear the last, pounding heartbeats of their shared existence.
What was once great love has turned into a drawn out struggle. It is brutal, quick-witted,
naked, piteous, and so infinitely sad.
Århundradets kärlekskrig is a novel in paragraph format, influenced by Märta Tikkanen’s classic novel Århundradets kärlekssaga/The Love Story of the Century from 1978.
From the sample translation:
He said:
I guess this morning we’re
no worse
for wear.
It won’t get
any better than this.
In fact, we’re losing
goodwill
on both sides
by a few percent a week.
I don’t know
what could reverse
this process.
Why don’t you ask
your therapist.
She said:
I asked.
He wants me to give
an ultimatum:
we go to therapy
you go to therapy
or else I leave you.
Don’t kill the messenger.
He said:
I will never go back there.
He is a charlatan
like all psychoanalysts.
Tranquility sets in
during therapy only because
both parties imagine
thanks to the relative calm
that the other party
has yielded
and one’s own conditions
will soon
be met.
But since in fact no one
has backed down an inch
it is only a matter of time
before war breaks out anew.
A war only ends
when one side is
wholly conquered
or dead.
She said:
That’s dictator talk,
my friend.
In a war of love
there are no winners
only losers.
A kiss, a bite
The two should rhyme,
for one who truly loves
With all her heart can
easily mistake them.
He said:
The precautionary measures
the therapist wanted to
teach me
are ones I have been using a long time
but I don’t know
why I bothered.
I still can’t shrink
myself down
to the right format.
She said:
“Precautionary measures.”
What kind of
prase is that for
a loving relationship?
Would I demand that
you shrink yourself
to my tiny format?
He said:
You have to laugh.
It’s like the UN.
This guy has no idea
what sorts of folks
he is welcoming
into his corner.
He’s a well-meaning amateur.
His good advice
is not for clients
like us.
We have been sharpening
our knives
too long.
Peace be with him.
Have a nice day.

Manuscript and sample translation available in May!
He has written two non-fiction books prior to taking the step over to fiction. Sleepwalkers is his thriller debut, and the first
book in a planned series.
Sleepwalkers
Anette Jansson, former UN police, now Detective Inspector at the Swedish Security Service
(Säpo), is investigating a case of radicalized
youngsters in a southern Stockholm suburb. At
the same time intelligence from Germany indicate increased activities of terrorist groups with
connections to Sweden.
Mohammed el Mehti is on his way to Stockholm to build up a small cell of righteous
soldiers, camouflaging it behind a legitimate
import business.
And Jamal Abu al-Khair, a nice but rebellious young man, is trying to find his path in
life and seeks knowledge and strength from
religion. But are prayers enough when Muslims are persecuted and waged war upon by
the Western world?
In his thriller debut, Håkan Eriksson investigates the motives and beliefs of the three
main characters, who all in their own way try
to do what they think is right in the world. It
is an initiated and suspenseful depiction of
how people driven by pure conviction work
their schemes, and how the security police
and the society fight acts of terror, trying to
prevent the worst from happening and still,
most of the time, finding themselves one
step behind.
From the sample translation:
Anette Jansson and Per Stavfeldt stared at
the computer screen. The image had frozen
on the image of the unmasked man’s head
being jerked up by one of the men in the
background. Stavfeldt looked expectantly at
Anette.
“Glad you phoned,” she said.
She pointed at the screen. Anette recognised the writing on the banner in the
background. She had a working knowledge
of Arabic after taking a few in-house courses, but Arabic was a difficult language with a
completely different alphabet. Even so there
were certain key phrases she recognised.
“It’s from the Quran. A summons to
follow the path of the righteous.”
Stavfeldt clasped his hands behind his
neck and leaned back in his chair. His uniform shirt gaped over his chest. He fixed his
gaze on a random spot on the ceiling.
“That’s what I was afraid of. I’m familiar with the method from TV, of course. This
is what usually happens in Syria and Iraq
when they kidnap and murder people.”
Anette rewound the footage and
turned up the volume. Once again the chanting could be heard from the man holding
both the victim and the book. She assumed
it was the Quran he was holding. She could
make out some of what he was saying.
“It’s also about the path of the righteous. And the condemnation of apostates.
All part of the standard rhetoric.” /.../
He paused the film and turned to face
Anette. During her time with the territorial police she had for a while worked closely
with Stavfeldt. He was a meticulous and methodical colleague who rarely let his imagination run away with him. /.../
“Of course, it could just be some immigrant kids who’ve been watching too
much CNN,” he suggested.
“Hmm,” answered Anette. “We’re
keeping tabs on a bunch of them. New Muslim converts, young lads choosing a radical
religious and political path.”
Stavfeldt had also read the report
about radical Islamists in Sweden that Säpo
had made public. Over two hundred people
who in one way or another were tied to this
small but excessively violent offshoot of Islam. He had also read about the young recent
Muslim converts in the west who frequently
chose to adopt the most radical path of all.
“On the other hand,” said Anette hesitantly, “This could be part of something
much bigger.”

The Terrorist’s Wife
“The night was long, the children fell asleep, but
I couldn’t. The merciless lights from the fluorescent tubes, the heat and the hard concrete floors
made it impossible. I thought of Said. Of his slim
body. Of days, weeks and month and years of interrogations and torture. Of that it might come
a day when the mujahidin will storm the prisons and open the cells and cast down the tyrant
Bashar al-Assad.”
This is the true story about Anna Sundberg,
a young Swedish woman from a well-off
middle-class background who joins the international jihadist movement and remains
with it for 16 years. We follow her story
from 1994 until today; from secluded Salafist
groups in Sweden, to a flat in central Berlin,
to secret training camps of the mujahidin in
Chechnya, and to cells in Bashar al-Assad’s
labyrinthine prison systems. By her side is
her second husband, a man by the US later
declared a global terrorist.
Anna Sundberg’s witness is unique, also internationally speaking. Few men – and almost no women – have dared or been able
to tell about the everyday life from within
the jihadist movement. And the account she
gives us, with the aid from proficient author
Jesper Huor, is both intriguing and horrifying. This is the story of her way into and out
of extremism, and its importance as a testament to all of us cannot be overestimated.
From the sample translation:
“The Anna who was standing outside the
door of my apartment in a stylish coat and
high-heeled boots one winter’s day almost
five years ago was an Anna wearing new
clothes – that I knew. There was something
dramatic about her appearance, and at the
same time a certain wariness. /.../
It was as if she had only just woken up
out of a dream, and now that she was relating
it, she was shaking her head at how unreal
and implausible it all sounded. But sixteen
years of her life had passed and you could see
there was sadness over everything that might
have been, the relationships she could have
had, the conversations. /.../
After a while it became clear that
Anna and I would write the book together.
She would write about what she had witnessed; I would help her with the narrative,
interview her where there were gaps, establish the bigger picture – the role played by
her circle of fundamentalists in the global
Islamist network, the pursuit of her and her
husband by the security services in Europe.
/.../
At times the process was difficult.
Some things came easily for Anna, while
others were painful to write and speak about.
Sometimes she wanted to reveal everything,
ruthlessly and with no heed for the consequences; at other times she longed to forget,
to be a totally normal person. We got to know
one another, we often laughed, but I can’t say
that I ever fully understood her. She remains
a mystery to me, perhaps even to herself.”

Stig & Etta. En berättelse om skuggor
Stig & Etta. A Story of Shadows
by Lo Dagerman & Nancy Pick
Spring 2017, 260 pages
Senior Editor: Stefan Hilding
English manuscript available
Lo Dagerman
Lo Dagerman has lived and worked in USA for 30 years. As
the daughter of Stig Dagerman and actress Anita Björk, Lo
has devoted a significant part of her life to making Stig’s legacy better known in the world. She runs the US webpage dedicated to his works and has produced two short films together
with her son, director Dan Levy Dagerman.
Nancy Pick
Nancy Pick works as a writer, editor and translator. She has
previously written The Rarest of the Rare, about the natural
history treasures of Harvard University. Nancy lives with her
family in western Massachusetts.
Stig & Etta. A Story of Shadows
It’s 1947. Stig Dagerman, the young Swedish
author on everybody’s lips, is feverishly working on a play, his third. Skuggan av Mart/
Marty’s Shadow, as Stig will call it, will be his
best-known play, and the most frequently staged
both in Sweden and abroad.
The play is inspired of real people: the Viennese-Jewish writer Etta Federn and her sons
Jean and Michel. Stig Dagerman and his wife
has visited Etta in Paris just weeks before he
sits down to write the play.
Some sixty years later, unknowingly and
independently of each other, Lo Dagerman
and Nancy Pick are pursuing research. Lo is
in search of her father, the star writer who
committed suicide when she was only three;
Nancy is in search of her distant cousin Etta,
the anarchist, feminist, journalist, force of
nature, and role model; both are driven by
a need to understand the persons whose absence in their lives bear such significance to
their identities today.
The play, Skuggan av Mart, brings Lo Dagerman and Nancy Pick together on their
quests. And the brutality of it almost tears
them apart. Why did Stig paint such a cruel
and garbled portrait of Etta and her family?
Lo and Nancy’s pursuit of who Stig and Etta
really were imbues the book, and pieces to
the puzzle are fit together along the way.
Stig & Etta is a personal book and winding
road back in time and into the minds of two
extraordinary and fascinating people.
From the English manuscript:
“She wants a typewriter.
It is November 1945, not long after the
end of the war, and she wants a typewriter
sent to her in France.
I think: perhaps she is a journalist.
Later I will learn that the reports she
plans to type are strange. Later I will learn
that her books have been destroyed. Later I
will come to obsess over her, identify with
her, and invoke her to strengthen me against
pain.
But when I first encounter her, as I flip
through family files in Chicago concerning
relatives no one talks about, all I know is
this: she wants a typewriter.
Her name is Mrs. Marietta Federn,
but she calls herself Etta. Etta—a Yiddish
name, from the Hebrew for hidden. The
file in the family office does not contain the
request she has sent to Chicago. I have only
the reply from Miss Hutchinson, my greatgrandmother’s secretary, along with the
notes accompanying her thorough investigation. Shipping a typewriter from Chicago to
Paris in 1945 would be difficult and expensive—and besides, given the scarcity of metal
after the war, there are no typewriters to be
had.
‘I took up the question of a typewriter with Mrs. Pick,’ writes Miss Hutchinson,
who, as secretary to a wealthy Jewish widow,
finds herself running an informal charity in
the wake of Hitler’s atrocities. ‘She feels that
there are so many calls for help during these
days that she can not advance the funds. Why
do you not buy it on credit there in France,

Sara Larsson was born in 1973, and lives
in Stockholm. She is a qualified civil engineer but has also studied journalism and
law. Today she works as a consultant in the
public sector.
Den första lögnen is her debut novel.

The First Lie
It is the summer of 1997, in Visby on Gotland.
16-year-old Josefin wakes in great pain all over,
she’s naked and confused. Last night, she and
her best friend Camilla had gone to party with
three older guys from school. She had flirted,
they had had fun, but then the images turn dim.
Thailand 2010. Oskar, a successful athlete, is
vacationing with his wife and two children.
On the surface idyllic, but Oskar is more
interested in bars and nightlife than in his
family.
After one particularly wet evening, Oskar
wakes up in a dirty shed, disoriented and in
need of a doctor. He had left with a woman
from the bar for a ‘little fun’, but their sexual
encounter had gotten out of hand and then
someone had assaulted him. The next day,
when he cannot find his passport, he realizes
that he has to find the woman.
At the same time in Stockholm, Jonas receives an email containing a photo of a naked young woman. For the last thirteen years
he has done all he could to forget that night
in Visby, but this photo could ruin his life.
Reluctantly, but out of necessity, he contacts
his two former friends. Again they have to
stick together in order to save themselves.
Their first lie necessitates many new ones in
order to conceal their secrets.
Sara Larsson debuts with Den första lögnen,
a suspenseful novel revolving around an ever-current and uncomfortable topic. It concerns our views on sexuality, the word ‘no’
and the lack of legal protection for women.
It concerns our morals and sense of justice,
our expectations and prejudices, as well as
our perception of crime and punishment.
Press voices:
“Sara Larsson’s debut novel is skilfully narrated, it’s actually entertaining, even though
it is so unpleasantly realistic. She writes an

Den åttonde dödssynden is her first novel,
and she’s currently writing on her next
novel planned for 2017.
The Eighth Deadly Sin
Nora is a successful columnist, author and lecturer, the kind that instill in her readers and audience that everyone can achieve happiness and
success if they just make an effort.
That is exactly what Nora did herself after
the accident ten years ago, when she fell in
a stairwell from the seventh floor and nearly
lost her life, an incident she only vaguely remembers.
Now she lives with her husband Frank and
their two children in a stately villa in a welloff residential street. Once a year Nora organizes a grand party for all their neighbours,
where she can really excel as the centre of
attention.
which she is not at all accustomed to. Slowly
but surely fragments of Nora’s past is coming back to her and suspicions start to haunt
her – maybe what happened ten years ago
wasn’t an accident.
Den åttonde dödssynden is a suspense novel
revolving around false fronts, pretence and
the things we want to hide from others. Rebecka Edgren Aldén has written a clever and
contemporary psychological thriller about
human failures, horrific secrets and the betrayal of trust.
But one day Klara moves in across the street
and the idyllic picture is disrupted. And as
Nora starts to write on her next future bestseller (on the theme of the deadly sins) she is
met by a series of problems and difficulties,

Stina Stoor (born in 1982) has roots in no

speakers as well as roots from northern

She lives with her Sami husband and two
small children in her great-great-grandfather’s old house, tending to the inherited
forest. Unlike most in her generation she
has chosen to live and work in the sparsely
populated area of northern Sweden.
Beasts and Other Stories
Bli som folk consists of nine short stories, all
set in the border districts of Västerbotten and
Ångermanland, in northern Sweden. But also
in the border area of present and past, and of
childhood and adultness. Girls trying to become
women, boys having to become men. And then
there are the mysteries of nature.
Bli som folk is rich in detail as well as in suggestive images of a Västerbotten in change.
Stina Stoor moves along paths already trod
upon by great writers, but she brings us – in
this unique debut – to places where we have
never set foot before.
From the sample translation:
“The sun shines in all the squash glasses making all the squash sparkle. Rubies, red campion, rowan! Kind of like that. Like magic!
And Party Mum carefully slices the cake so
that Sandra’s bit comes out beautiful and
very large, almost scandalous, and it stands
up in the middle of a flowery plate. The
other children get cream-clogged spoons on
the tablecloth but Party Mum is so kind she
doesn’t even say anything about it. /.../ On
the way home when Sandra leans back in
her seat she feels that crown on her head and
a slender elastic band under her chin. The
crown is made of thick paper, golden on the
outside and white inside. A kind of toy. She
takes it off and leaves it there. Among the
ice cream wrappers, pools coupons and wadding.
She asks:
‘Can I drive?’
And Dad replies:
‘Later.’
Because she hardly ever gets to, out on the
big road:
‘Later Sandra, when we’re more closer to
home.’ ”
Press voices:
“Stina Stoor writes in the same spirit as the
great writers of the same landscape. I think
of Sara Lidman, of course, but also of Torgny
Lindgren and Per Olov Enqvist. The dialectal tone permeat the stories. It is a language
offering resistance, forcing the reader to do
retakes, to immerse in the text and to let the
laconic formulations effect deeply. /.../ We
have probably witnessed a new literary star
being born. Make a mental note of the name
Stina Stoor.” Dalademokraten
“... a rather irresistible, sharp humour, which
remains even in serious moments. /…/ Bli som
folk is a debut that really makes me happy”
Aftonbladet
“Stoor narrates with evident authority in a
language strongly characterized by dialect,
which sings and paints its way through the
text. Her attention to detail as well as the affection for the characters shine through the
stories and allow the collection to become a
convincing whole, where none of the stories
are overshadowed or feel the least irrelevant.
“Stoor writes as if she is composing music, I want more from the pen of Stina Stoor.”
with full stops and phrases that makes a Svenska Dagbladet
rhythm of its own. Reading becomes a bodily
experience. /.../ Stina Stoor’s stories are not “It would disappoint me, but above all surprise

The World’s Last Night
Hidden on a train, Simos and his friend Aristidis make it to Sweden. It is the end of the 1970s,
they are both children of Greek partisans who
after the end of the civil war was given asylum
in communist Hungary. Isolated, both from the
Hungarian society as well as from all things
beyond the border, they have been nurturing a
dream about a life on the other side of the iron
curtain. And now they have arrived.
But a place isn’t the same as a dream. In Sweden, Simos is greeted with cold politeness.
Eventually he is able to make a decent life for
himself in Lund, but his innermost desire –
to become an author or movie director – will
never come to pass.
Excerpt from the sample translation:
“They left the train, half-heartedly exhorted
by the two guards. Ahead of them, about ten
meters from the rails, there was a massive
concrete cube. It looked like an abandoned
bunker, a grey lump without any roads leading to or from it. The crackles from the cooling metal and the rumble of the motor a
few railcars away drowned out everything.
No one said anything. They walked silently
through the tall grass, borne by the practised
belief that they were prepared, that they
had already gone through all imaginable
scenarios, that they’d discussed all possible
questions, all possible answers, and therefore
would handle whatever would come.”
Long after, his son tries to write him back to
life. All Simos’ dreams and hopes of something greater for himself depicted through
the longing of a humble voice.

Agneta Pleijel was born in Stockholm in
1940. She has worked as a critic and cultural editor of various Swedish newspapers
and magazines. Between 1987 and 1990 she
was President of the Swedish PEN, and
since 1988 she is a member of the academy
Samfundet De nio. Between 1992 and 1996
Agneta Pleijel was Professor at the Institute of Drama in Stockholm.
Apart from being one of Sweden’s formost writers, she is also a playwright and a
poet. Her books have been translated into
more than 20 languages.
A Fortune Foretold
A prophecy is received by a beloved aunt, a
prophecy that the girl eagerly awaits to see fulfilled.
In an open-hearted and pregnant recollection, Agneta Pleijel writes her memoirs
about a young girl who once was her.
The childhood is dominated by geographical movements. The girl is engaged in reading –the books give words to the vagueness
of existence – and she’s also busy thinking
about the female sex, family and the stupendous diversity of people. Her dad, the mathematician, and her mum, the musician, are
very different from each other. They are in
constant conflict, and she loves them both.
Slowly she realizes that she’s grown up in a
lie. She must guard herself carefully. Protect
herself and her two younger sisters and tread
gently through the war zone that her parents’ marriage is increasingly turning into.
She believes in the miracle, the magic and
the transformation.
The story takes place in the suburbs of Stockholm, in the university town of Lund and in
the USA. It is a tale both painful and humorous about the search for truth, morality, and
a place of your own in the world. Agneta
Pleijel writes about a time gone by, but the
story about a girl growing into womanhood
is ageless.
Press voices:
“Agneta Pleijel’s marvelously lustrous autobiography is one of those that will set the
tone for others.” Expressen
“A classic coming-of-age-story, in short,
but also captivating in an unconventional
way. The language of Agneta Pleijel is carnal and melancholic /…/ Pleijel has created a vibrant portrait of a family rooted
in a specific zeitgeist, but at the same time
living in a historical period of progress. Like
many children of the fifties, Agneta Pleijel
decides not to be like her parents. She wants
to try to be a writer. How fortunate for us.”
Dagens Nyheter
“Despite a distressing and dark plot it is as
always very pleasant to find oneself in the
language of Agneta Pleijel. Spådomen is a
low-key, grand novel about a family who
has lived in a messy lie, about a suffocating mother-daughter relationship and
about the immense issue: what is love?”
Svenska Dagbladet
“Agneta Pleijel’s psychologically observant
portrayal of a child emerging adulthood, captivates from the very first line.”
Jönköpingsposten
“Yes, it’s painful, but depicted in a remarkably beautiful way.” Ljusdals-Posten
“The style is explicit and firm, not a word too
much, but still intense and touching. Spådomen is absolutely one of Agneta Pleijel’s
best books, you sense its total genuineness.”
Hallandsposten
“The memoir is universal in its portrayal of
the tumult of adolescence, specific in its rich
evocations of a past era, and acutely, physically personal. /…/ stylistically this is writing
of the highest order.” Swedish Book Review
“Spådomen affects me strongly, both emotionally and intellectually. I very much like
the author’s close reasoning and her ability
to see herself from within, but also from an
outside perspective. Agneta Pleijel is a linguistic master and an attentive psychologist. “Frank, captivating and wistful.”
Nothing is superfluous, nothing is missing.” Aftonbladet

ADVENTURE

Michael Mortimer
Michael Mortimer is a pseudonym for critically acclaimed writers Daniel Sjölin and
Jerker Virdborg.
Daniel Sjölin (left) was born in 1977, he
made his debut in 2002 with Oron bror. In
2007 he was nominated for the August Prize
for Världens sista roman. Daniel works as a
literary critic and for many years he hosted
the literary tv-show Babel.
Jerker Virdborg was born in 1971 and debuted in 2001 with the short story collection
Landhöjning två centimeter per natt. In 2002
his breakthrough novel Svart krabba was
published. Jerker is also active as a cultural
journalist.
The Michael Mortimer Series
Driven by love for the classical adventure genre
and admiration for authors such as Jules Verne,
Frans G. Bengtsson and Hergé, Michael Mortimer enters the stage with a grand project.
This is a cohesive adventure story in six parts.
With an impressive narrative drive and quality throughout the text, Michael Mortimer
is able to combine the joyous narrative from
classic adventure books with the urgency of
dystopias, as well as the complexities and
pace of thrillers.
The adventure started with Jungfrustenen
in September 2013 and in May 2014 Fossildrottningen was published. This year the third
instalment, Blodssystrarna, will come out.
Press voices:
“In this way it reminds you of the dangerous
secrets that undermine the authority of the
Church in Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code and
Umberto Eco’s Name of the Rose, and halfway
between these two works Mortimer’s book
could be placed. Faster and trashier than Eco;
more learned and ingenious than Brown. /.../
It’s clear that the author had fun during the
writing. He or she switches easily between
different eras, settings and styles. The language is restrained and functional, slightly
more elegant than the usual use of prose in
the genre. /.../ It’s hard to be bored when
the story zaps between Nobel festivities in
Stockholm, a treasure hunt in Lapland, record label offices in California and Copenhagen during the WWII occupation.”
Svenska Dagbladet
“Mortimer is a gifted writer with a sense of
humor. Though his characterization is brief,
he does propel his characters into spectacular
events with a joyful brawl.”
Katrineholms-kuriren
“It’s not often that I read a book capable of
sweeping me off my feet and transporting
me to another world while at the same time
teaching me, in a very grounded way, things
about the world I live in. But that’s just what
Michael Mortimer’s novel Jungfrustenen
does. /…/ It’s rare to find a novel that is as
adventurous, page-turning and well-crafted
as Jungfrustenen. I can’t wait to read the next
instalment in the series!”
Swedish Book Review
“The speed is breathtaking from the very
first page and I am immediately hooked! I
read from cover to cover, 500 pages feel like
nothing, for each page I read I have to read
the next one so I can find out what happens.
There are so many things I like in this book
that it’s even difficult to mention them all –
the element of popular science, the fact pages about historical persons that are a part of
the plot, the breathtaking speed with which
the story is told, and much, much more. Then
there’s the fact that when I read the book,
my imagination soars.” Boklysten
“Despite the extensive format this book is
so easily read. Once started it is most difficult to put down. Unlike many other novels
it never gets boring. The mix of genre, the
fast paced and thrilling plot together with
the solid characters and settings must be the
reason.”

Ida, Alma and Lasse travel to Moscow to search for
old Soviet files at a governmental archive inside the
Kremlin, and there they find a second piece of the
stone called the Queen Fossil. Their hunt for the
remaining two pieces now begins, and take them
through the marshes of Ukraine to Chernobyl, and to
the Vatican City in Rome.
The scientific adventure continues.
In 1697, the grand royal castle Tre Kronor in
Stockholm burns to the ground, destroying most
of the national library and the royal archives.
One precious book is salvaged: a rare and cryptic manuscript, which is later buried on a southern Swedish island to be hidden from the world.
Two catastrophic accidents occur in Stockholm: a regional train derails off a bridge,
and a few days later a passenger plane crashes in a heavily populated area. Hundreds of
people are killed. A local watchmaker finds
a strange connection between the two accidents and two very exclusive turnip watches,
one of which he has in his shop for repair.
There is a strange force field between the
two watches that breaks if one of the watches stops. And if they stop, catastrophes follow.
Three months after their flight from Italy,
our three heroes, Alma, Lasse and Ida, have
settled down close to Alhambra in the south
of Spain. Together with Miranda – their former foe – they have created a temporary
laboratory to research the Queen Fossil. But
their main mission is to find Eva, Ida’s mother.
The news reports of the fatal accidents in
Stockholm travel far, and Alma believes that
they must be linked to the Queen Fossil and
the Solve and Coagula substances. Incognito they travel back to Sweden to find the
watchmaker. Soon an even more serious catastrophe threatens an underwater tunnel in
Gothenburg.
In Blodssystrarna, the third instalment of
the Michael Mortimer series, we again follow the adventures of young student Ida, her
genious grandmother Alma, and Ida’s foster
father Lasse. With the help of Miranda and
the Voynich manuscript, they take on the
quest to find the Fountain of Youth.
