Dear Friends,
As we welcome another bright class of students and plan for the year ahead, I
find myself reflecting on the past to prepare for the future and a new year.
This year, we’ve experienced several groundbreaking accomplishments. A new
director of the VCU Philips Institute for Oral and Craniofacial Molecular Biology.
Our school’s first endowed chair in honor of a revered oral surgeon. And the first
time you, our alumni, have raised an incredible $1 million during your reunion festivities. The list of achievements goes on and on.
We also have completed the process of developing a five-year strategic plan that
mirrors the VCU Quest for Distinction. The Quest outlines the university’s route to fostering student success at all stages of their education, promoting innovation through research and scholarly activity,
advancing human health and engaging in the communities we serve.
In the same vein, we have worked with alumni, students, faculty, staff and members of the community to develop a four-pronged mission for the next five years at the VCU School of Dentistry. We will
focus our efforts on the education of highly qualified dental professionals; research that advances the
understanding of oral health, disease and effective treatment; service to the community; and the improved
oral and general health of our patients and the greater population. Implementation strategies for the fiveyear plan are now beginning, and we look forward to sharing our progress over the coming months.
But we can’t do it without you. You push us to be a better school and to provide even better dental
professionals, who will be your future colleagues. You are our biggest cheerleaders, and I can’t thank you
enough for your support.
This magazine issue, our 2013 Annual Report to Investors, serves as one big “thank you” to all of
the alumni, donors and friends who have supported our school financially in the past fiscal year. Your
commitment to our students, to our faculty and to our educational and service initiatives has truly made
the difference.
We are poised for the future. And we look forward to a future partnership with you.
Best wishes,
David C. Sarrett, D.M.D., M.S.
Dean, VCU School of Dentistry and
Associate vice president for health sciences, faculty affairs
Celebrating a century of dental hygiene
guest of honor at many conference programs. But the
real stars of the show were the notable speakers who
presented 30 continuing education courses.
Among them were M. Anjum Shah, assistant
professor, and Tammy K. Swecker (B.S. ’93, M.Ed.
’05), associate professor, both of the VCU School of
Dentistry Department of Oral Health Promotion and
Community Outreach. Shah presented a course entitled “Critical elements of the health history: Are you
asking the right questions?” Swecker’s course was
called “Modified diets: Do you know the oral and
nutritional implications?” In addition to lecturing,
Shah and Swecker, as co-chairs of the VCU Student
Chapter of the American Dental Hygienists’
Association (SCADHA), led a group of four dental
hygiene students to their first national ADHA annual
session.
(Left to right) Jorel Belarmino, Veronica Lopez and Danny Le presented their research project at the 2013 Clinic Day in April.
All dental hygiene students at the VCU School
of Dentistry participate in SCADHA through monthly meetings and service activities. The organization

More than 3,000 dental hygienists and aspiring
practitioners from all across the country joined
together in Boston, Mass. this June to commemorate
100 years of the profession at the 90th American
Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) Annual
Session. Dental hygiene students and faculty from
the VCU School of Dentistry attended the conference
to network with their peers, engage in educational
activities and present research findings.
During the week-long event, several celebrities
championed the causes of dental hygiene. Two plenary sessions featured Erin Brockovich, the real-life
figure and public health advocate behind the movie
bearing her name, and Geena Davis, Oscar-winning
actress and activist. Debbie Reynolds, actress, singer
and dancer, served as emcee for the ADHA black tie
gala. And Dr. Esther Wilkins, author of what is considered by many the dental hygiene bible, was the

and Project Homeless Connect.
Students provide oral screenings
along with critically important education on improved oral health.
Participation in SCADHA also serves
as a model for future interaction with
the ADHA as a practitioner. “SCADHA provides an opportunity to connect with practicing dental hygienists,
learn about legislative action that may
affect our profession and provides a
voice for all dental hygienists,” said
Swecker. “It fosters a relationship to
dental hygiene by strengthening their
commitment to the profession.” And it
was through SCADHA that several
dental hygiene students were able to
attend the ADHA Annual Session.
This year, a portion of the money
raised through SCADHA activities
allowed a group of students to submit
a proposal to present research through
table clinics at the ADHA Annual
Session. “Three students took the initiative to submit their research,” said
Shah. These three students, Jorel
Belarmino, Danny Le and Veronica
Lopez, were motivated to share their
research with their future colleagues
at ADHA after the excitement and
success of presenting at Clinic Day
within the VCU School of Dentistry.
All dental hygiene students participate in the annual Clinic Day, a celebration of research conducted by dental and dental hygiene students as
well as residents. The project presented by Belarmino, Le and Lopez, entitled “Bisphosphonate-related
osteonecrosis of the jaw: Is your
patient at risk?” explored the current
professional literature surrounding the
use of bisphosphonates with regard to
necrosis of the jaw bone resulting
from invasive procedures. “The first
thing we had to do was create a project relevant to dental hygiene practice,” said Belarmino. “After that, we
created an abstract and submitted an
application to present at the ADHA
Annual Session. Our application was
accepted, and Veronica and Danny
presented. We were excited to represent the VCU dental hygiene program
and to promote research activities at
the School of Dentistry.”
In the dental hygiene program,
research is emphasized early, spearheaded by Dr. Joan M. Pellegrini
(Ph.D. ’08). “Our goal is for students
to leave our program knowing how to
do research – to be good consumers
of research and to be able to differentiate between adequate research and
valid, reliable, usable research,”
shared Pellegrini. “Then, as practitioners, they can translate current lit-
erature and use that information to
help their patients maintain good oral
health.”
Research has taken on an increasingly important role at VCU, as well
as the VCU School of Dentistry,
through the VCU Quest for
Distinction. Faculty in the dental
hygiene program have responded in
kind by pursuing more research
avenues and opportunities for themselves and for their students.
“Student involvement in research
is important for the purpose of
strengthening their commitment to the
profession, to the community and to
patient care. Being involved in
research while in school is an early
introduction to being a lifelong learner,” said Shah. Swecker
added,“Participation in research helps
keep students on the cutting edge of
dental hygiene practice theories, and
our mission as faculty is to develop
critical thinkers.”

2013 ANNUAL REPORT 3
Creative Solutions - the Contour Healer
“It all started here.”
After graduation, White went into private practice
with a fellow alumnus, Dr. Dennis F. Howard (D.D.S.
’79), who recently retired. It’s no surprise that his new
partner also is a VCU graduate – Dr. Michael G.
Heffelfinger (D.D.S. ’05). White’s Virginia Beach
office, Oceanfront Dentistry, focuses on general dentistry, and over the past few years, he entered the
implant arena.
As White took on more and more implant cases,
he became frustrated with the process and materials
used in dental implants. He would hear returning
patients complaining about food getting trapped
around their implant crown or that it just didn’t feel or
look right. When the complaints grew more frequent,
White decided to try and find a solution that would
satisfy his patients.
White recently visited the VCU School of Dentistry
Department of Periodontics to share his story with residents.
Dr. Allen “Trey” White III (D.D.S. ’98) didn’t
imagine that he would become an inventor. In fact, as
a cardiac tech in his college town, he did not even
intend to be a dentist. But when Dr. Marshall
Brownstein, former assistant dean of admissions and
student affairs at the VCU School of Dentistry recommended that he shadow a few local Virginia dentists,
White found a unique profession in which he could
combine health care, creativity and service. Dentistry
was his calling, and he applied to only one dental
school.
“I owe a lot to VCU. I had the best experience of
my life here,” said White. “I have a profession that I
wake up every morning and just can’t wait to get to
work.”
4 VCU School of Dentistry
He discovered that one of the biggest issues was
how the gum tissue healed around the implant itself.
The traditional method for placing an implant
involves inserting a cylinder into the gum tissue and
then fitting the implant on top, which White described
as “putting an orange on a toothpick.” The open
embrasures allow food to get trapped between the
gums and the implant, and the only way to get around
the issue was to create a custom chairside abutment to
shape the tissue.
“I talked to a few labs, and they didn’t really have
any answers other than custom abutments,” said
White. “I talked to a few of the implant companies –
same thing.”
So he started making some custom abutments in
advance of procedures and shared them with his some
of his colleagues, especially Drs. Bryan M. Konikoff
(D.D.S. ’03) and Albert B. Konikoff (D.D.S. ’73).
They gave him their feedback and suggestions, and
soon White had a prototype for what would become
the Contour Healer.
White credits his alma mater with fostering his
creativity. He hopes to help others follow in his path
by donating a portion of the profits from the Contour
Healer to the VCU School of Dentistry. “The school
allowing me that vision to take something to the next
step has always given me the spark to say, ‘Hey, if
you want to change something, you can.’ And I’m
really excited to help give back to you guys who
helped me get to where I am.”
White holds one of the Contour Healer abutments.
White started from scratch. With his prototype, he
applied for and successfully received a patent. Next
was the lengthy process of receiving clearance to produce the abutment from the Food and Drug
Administration. With the help of a consultant, he powered through the 500-page application, a process that
took almost a year and a half. During that time, he
retooled a former Toyota plant and set up shop for
production of the Contour Healer. When he finally
received FDA approval, he was in business.
Now that White has one successful product development under his belt, his colleagues have been asking what’s next. He’s not taking a break. An impression coping that captures the molded tissue is in
development right now and awaiting FDA approval.
And he’s putting his creativity to use for his family too. “My next project is
developing an app that tells
you when the school bus
is within a half mile of
your house. With winter
coming, how great would
that be?”
“After developing the product, I was selling it on
my own in between patients,” said White. Eventually,
he teamed up with another consultant who assisted
him with bringing the product to market through
Patterson Dental and a number of other distributors.
From concept to completed product, White spent
nearly six years developing the Contour Healer. And it
was largely self-funded. “I funded everything I possibly could, and leveraged my house much to my wife’s
chagrin,” shared White. “My dad saw how much passion I have for this, so he loaned me money, and I’ve
just about paid him back. I didn’t set out to make a
million dollars, and I haven’t. I set out to fix a problem, and I fixed a problem. And if I get out of it what
I put into it, which I just about have, then it’s a home
run for me.”
Calling all innovators!
The newly created Dental Innovation Program

Research and innovation at the
VCU School of Dentistry
A vision for the future
In March 2013, Dr. Iain Morgan arrived as the director of the
VCU Philips Institute here at the VCU School of Dentistry from the
Medical Research Council-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus
Research in the U.K. He has a background in cancer research and, for
the past 14 years, has been studying human papillomaviruses, almost
certainly a causative agent in oro-pharyngeal cancers. He will continue these studies at VCU in close association with the Massey Cancer
Center.
Dr. Iain Morgan, Director, VCU

INVESTIGATOR
The vision for the Philips Institute is to develop a nationally recognized center of excellence in oral health research. There will be
four main themes pursued by the Institute: cancer, infection and
inflammation, bio-engineering and health disparities in underserved
populations. The Philips Institute will therefore be multi-disciplinary
in nature and will consist of VCU faculty from a variety of different
schools coming together to tackle oral diseases from a number of
angles. The short term goal is to recruit new faculty to the Institute.
Through bringing in new faculty and building upon the strength of
our existing research faculty, the VCU School of Dentistry will
increase its research funding and strengthen its reputation in the academic community.
The ultimate goal is to improve human health by making new
discoveries and developing new reagents and therapeutics for treating
and alleviating diseases of the oral cavity.

There also are a number of researchers looking at better use of materials and bonding agents to improve dental practice.
What all our researchers have in common is their ability to win research funding. Since January 2013, our
researchers have been awarded $4.6 million in recognition of their excellent research. This research is contributing to
the next generation of solutions and treatments for oral health care problems. It also provides our D.D.S. students
with the opportunity to conduct high quality, leading edge research during their time with us as we train them to
become the healthcare solution providers of tomorrow.
Kim Isringhausen (B.S. ’95, M.P.H. ’04) recently won two awards
to educate the public and provide improved access to oral health
care. Isringhausen received $2,500 from John Snow, Inc. for educational interventions to improve and maintain oral health in older
women and $70,541 from the Virginia Health Workforce
Development Authority to fund an innovative program to increase
access to the oral health care workforce.
Dr. Todd Kitten received an award from the American Heart Association.
Research in Kitten’s lab concerns bacteria that live in the mouth and their
relationship to health and disease. He will use the $154,000 to identify small
molecule inhibitors of an endocarditis virulence factor.
Dr. Janina Lewis (Ph.D. ’97) was one of the recipients of the VCU
Presidential Research Quest Fund. Lewis is utilizing her $50,000
award to examine the global regulation of gene expression by OxyR
in periodontopathogen Porphyromonas gingivali. She also received
an award of $1.9 million from the National Institute of Dental and
Craniofacial Research to explore Nitrosative stress defenses in periodontopathogen Porphyromonas gingivali.

Dr. S. Esra Sahingur’s research focuses on genetic and epigenetic susceptibility to inflammation and the link between periodontal and systemic diseases.
She is the recent recipient of two grants. The first is an award of $228,500 from
the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, National Institutes
of Health and Department of Health and Human Services to examine inflammatory responses initiated by periodontal bacterial DNA. She also received
$200,000 from the National Institutes of Health, KL2 and VCU Center for
Clinical and Translational Research to test the frequency and functional effects
of toll like receptor 9 single nucleotide polymorphisms in periodontitis.
Dr. Ping Xu is studying oral microbial diseases by integrating
advanced sciences including comparative metagenomics, proteomics and bioinformatics. He was awarded $1.9 million from
the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research to
explore the interaction of colonizer and pathogen in oral biofilm.

Making a difference, one child at a time
VCU Alumni takes great pride in recognizing outstanding alumni for professional
achievements, excellence in community service and other accomplishments. Dr. Julian C.
Metts, Jr. (D.D.S. ’63, Orthodontics ’65) was honored at the 2013 Alumni Stars recognition
program on October 25 for his humanitarian efforts as the founder of the World Pediatric
Project.
VCU president Dr. Michael Rao (left) and VCU Alumni president Dr. W. Baxter Perkinson, Jr. (right, D.D.S. ‘70)
presented Metts (center) with his 2013 Alumni Stars award.
As a young man, Metts developed a strong work ethic that carried him into adulthood.
Immediately after high school, he traveled to Iceland to work as a civilian in the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers. Later, he served his country at the end of the Korean War. With a GI
Bill and the encouragement from his father, Metts pursued a college education. And at age
22, he attended the University of Richmond to study biology and chemistry.
Two college experiences nudged Metts toward a dental education, and toward a higher
calling. He tutored two classmates in biology – one who ended up in medical school, and
the other who went to law school. Metts figured if they could pursue advanced education,
he could do it too. Then he saw the effects of dentistry first-hand. The classmate who studied law had a problem with his jaw, so he came to see Dr. S. Elmer Bear at the MCV
2013 ANNUAL REPORT 9
School of Dentistry to get it fixed. Metts witnessed how
correcting this man’s jaw affected his whole life. He too
wanted to find a vocation that would allow him to help
others.
“During school, I would pray, ‘Please Lord, give me
something to do so that I can make a difference,’” said
Metts. Dentistry opened that door for Metts.
pitals, including the VCU Medical Center. In 2011 after a
decade of exemplary service, the International Hospital for
Children rebranded to become the World Pediatric Project.
The World Pediatric Project sends surgical teams to developing countries to administer medical, dental, vision and
other treatments as well as bringing children back for
more advanced surgeries that could not be done remotely.
After graduating from the MCV School of Dentistry
in 1963, he completed an orthodontics residency and graduated in the first class of four in 1965. He immediately
went into practice in Richmond’s Southside and began
serving his community’s orthodontic needs.
Metts also served the needs of the greater community
through his participation in the South Richmond Rotary
Club, where he has been a member since 1968. In the late
‘80s, Metts and his fellow Rotarians raised funds and
awareness in the hopes of eradicating polio worldwide.
They raised $225,000 for the cause – more than any other
Rotary Club. “I thought to myself, if we could raise all
that money, maybe we could make a big difference.”
Big difference is an understatement compared to what
happened next. Through the South Richmond Rotary
Club, Metts and four other colleagues made the journey to
Guyana, South America for a mission trip in 1991. While
there, the group learned about how dental and health care
worked in Guyana and were disturbed to see children suffering from diseases and injuries that could be easily treated in the United States. One such child had ingested lye
and was near death. With considerable effort and governmental cooperation, the child returned to Richmond with
Metts and his colleagues and received pro-bono treatment.
After nearly 18 months, the child was able to return home
to live a healthy, normal life.
The trip to Guyuna changed Metts’ life and laid the
groundwork for what would eventually become the World
Pediatric Project. Founded in 1999 as the International
Hospital for Children, Metts envisioned a hospital without
walls to link critically ill children in developing countries
with the resources and health care professionals to help
them. A “virtual” hospital developed in Richmond, and
the organization would lease space from several area hos-

Teresa and Maria, accompanied by their mother
Lisandra, visited Pediatric Dentistry@VCU for a dental
check-up following their surgical procedure.
“One by one, we’ve made arrangements to bring children
back with us for procedures,” said Metts. “And there have
been so many examples of incredible work and exciting
success stories.
One such success story was the landmark 2011
surgery that brought much-deserved attention to the organization and Metts’ alma mater. The World Pediatric
Project learned about Maria and Teresa Tapia, conjoined
twins from the Dominican Republic who were born connected at the chest and abdomen. The mother of these
beautiful girls was told that they wouldn’t live more than a
week after they were born. In a 20-plus-hour, complex
surgery conducted at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond
at VCU led by Dr. David Lanning (M.D. ’95, Ph.D. ’00),
the Tapia twins were separated successfully. The twins
have thrived since their initial procedure. They returned to
Richmond in 2012 to follow up with the team of health
professionals who treated them and were given a clean
bill of health.
None of the many accomplishments of the World
Pediatric Project would be possible without one man and
his goal of making a difference. Although Metts has
retired from his orthodontics practice, he has plenty to
keep him busy.
“Dr. Metts remains actively involved as Founder and
World Pediatric Project’s guiding light,” said Susan
Rickman, president and CEO, World Pediatric Project.
“VCU should be very proud of this dental school graduate
and what his impact has been on providing access to care
for the children of the world.”
Metts lives with his wife Elizabeth and has five
grown children, two of whom are adopted, and nine
grandchildren. Although he retired from private practice
in 2008, Metts stays active chasing his two-year-old
Bernese Mountain Dog and working on his Cartersville,
Virginia farm, where his family has lived for the last 38
years.
Metts has accomplished his goal of making a difference tenfold through his hard work and dedication.
And he remains as committed today as he was more
than 20 years ago to helping children across the globe
live healthy, happy lives.

revered practitioner, educator and mentor. To aid
the fundraising effort, Andrea Bear, Bear’s daughter, produced a video tracing his life, his work at
VCU and his impact on his chosen profession,
which introduced him to a whole new generation of
oral surgeons and VCU alumni. The chair will support the residency program’s continued development through recruitment and retention of the best
and brightest faculty and residents.
Bear served from 1960 to 1981 as the first
chairman and founder of the OMFS residency program. He made a name for himself nationally and
internationally and devoted himself to his profession, his fellow oral surgeons and his residents,
whom he affectionately thought of as his family.
“The VCU School of Dentistry always meant a
lot to Elmer and it meant a lot to me too. Many of
our best friends were other oral surgeons from
across the country and abroad,” noted Barbara
Greenberg, Bear’s widow.

Bear Chair. At its September meeting, the VCU
Board of Visitors approved the chair, established
with funds totaling $1.1 million.
Previously, the Bear Chair was an endowed professorship within the Department of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery. On the thirtieth anniversary of
Dr. S. Elmer Bear’s passing, with the leadership of
Dr. A. Omar Abubaker, professor and chairman of
the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,
and the guidance of the VCU School of Dentistry
Development Office, several alumni renewed the
commitment to honor and preserve the memory of a
12 VCU School of Dentistry
Bear’s children also spent a considerable
amount of time at the dental school and around the
medical campus. One of Bear’s sons, Dr. Donald
Bear, recalled, “We all grew up at MCV, having our
turn at making rounds with Dad, so it’s a special
connection.”
Another of Bear’s sons, Dr. Harry Bear (M.D.
’75, Ph.D. ’78), grew that connection into a career.
Inspired by his father’s passion for patient care, he
pursued a medical education and now serves as
chairman of the Division of Surgical Oncology at
the VCU Massey Cancer Center and professor of
surgery and of microbiology and immunology at the
VCU School of Medicine. “As a VCU faculty
member, this honor of the Bear Chair is especially
gratifying,” said Dr. Harry Bear.
“We always knew that Dad’s first love next to
his family was his work,” shared Andrea Bear. “He
Thank you!
loved teaching students and residents the right approach to difficult
problems, and he worked every day for what was best for the specialty and to improve the lives of patients.”
What’s so remarkable about the Bear Chair is that it was kickstarted by many of the early residents that Bear trained, like Dr.
Ronald L. Tankersley (D.D.S. ’68, OMFS ’71) and Dr. Charles L.
Cuttino III (D.D.S. ’66, OMFS ’72), but brought to fruition by residents that came long after his tenure as chairman including recent
graduates of the program. These alumni and oral surgeons share
Bear’s enthusiasm for the residency program and his commitment to
ensuring that the program
and the department continue
to be among the best in the
country. The Bear Chair
funding to the program will
enhance the educational
experience of future residents, while forever keeping
Bear’s legacy alive.
Abubaker will be the first
Bear Chair and the first chair
within the VCU School of
Dentistry.
As department chairman, Abubaker will be named the inaugural
Bear Chair. “I am honored and extremely privileged to be the first
person to hold the honor in the department and the school,” said
Abubaker. “And I’m excited to share the news with alumni, friends
and the entire specialty.”

2013 ANNUAL REPORT 13
A renewed focus on faculty development
Every year, donors contribute generously to the VCU School of Dentistry Annual Fund. These donors,
ranging from alumni to community dentists and from students to faculty and staff, choose to support the
school’s immediate needs as determined by the dean. In fiscal year 2013, Dean David Sarrett allocated funds
to two important groups of people at the dental school – students and faculty.
The two top priorities at the VCU School of Dentistry are student scholarships and faculty development.
New student scholarships are created each year, but securing funding for faculty development is more of a
challenge. Dean Sarrett knows that helping faculty members achieve their highest potential as professors effectively creates better educated students, so he dedicated one-third of the previous fiscal year’s Annual Fund to
fostering the faculty.
Professors in the departments
of prosthodontics, oral pathology
and general practice benefitted
from funds for faculty development.
The Philips Institute Seminar Series offers faculty a chance to learn more about
specific research topics while earning continuing education credits.
Led by W. Tyler Haynes
Professor and chairman Dr. John
W. Unger, the Department of
Prosthodontics has begun planning its own faculty development
program using the donated funds.
Unger also has used funds to support faculty as they travel to specialty meetings and educational
events.
The Department of Oral
Diagnostic Sciences used its funding to aid in the professional growth and teaching efficiency of three members of the department through travel
to conferences. Dr. James C. Burns (D.D.S. ’72, Ph.D. ’80), associate dean of clinical dental education and
chairman and professor of oral pathology, Dr. Sonali Rathore, assistant professor, and Dr. John A. Svirsky
(D.D.S. ’73, M.Ed. ’79), professor, attended annual meetings in their specific areas of expertise. “In each of the
cases, the participants attended CE courses, networked with other professionals and returned with new materials
to add to their teaching files. The monies were greatly appreciated, particularly in these days of fiscal constraints
where attending meetings like these are not possible with the state allocated funds,” said Burns.
The Department of General Practice is one of the school’s largest departments with many roles and responsibilities in the education of the pre-doctoral dental student. “I’m more than happy to report that the funds for
faculty development for GP have been a resounding success,” shared Dr. Alfred Certosimo, department chair.
“For this first time in my tenure as chair, we were able to send a majority, 18, of our full-time faculty for professional training. The professional development training they received will benefit the school, our department and
the students in innumerable ways for many years to come. This was all made possible by the generosity of our
alumni. Our department is extremely grateful for this generous funding, and we hope that our success story will
again be made available from future alumni giving.”

Become a part of history...
and help us lead the way
Dr. Ronald Tankersley (D.D.S. ’68, OMFS ’71) is the chairman of the VCU School of
Dentistry’s new leadership annual giving society called the Deans Society. He has great confidence in Dean David Sarrett’s leadership of the school. “I have witnessed the progress of the
school under several deans, and I think that Dean Sarrett is the right dean to lead our school into a
great future. He is able to maintain the perfect balance between academic needs and clinical
needs.”
This new giving society will help us enhance our Annual Fund, which is the lifeblood of our
school. The Annual Fund allows the dean to respond to immediate needs affecting students, faculty, staff and our patients. The fund also supports student scholarships and professional development for our educators.
Starting on July 1, 2013, the leading alumni and friends who support our Annual Fund will be members of the Deans
Society. The Deans Society has three different levels, each named for a visionary leader from our school’s history. All
donors who are inducted into the Deans Society will be applauded for their support of the school’s current needs with a
special salute in the 2014 Honor Roll of Investors. Members also will receive special lapel pins, which will allow you to
visibly show your pride in the school on a suit jacket or a white coat.

1893–1910
Harry Lyons, D.D.S., D.Sc., LL.D.
Dean, 1951–1970
Dr. Lewis M. Cowardin was the founding chair of the
University College of Medicine’s dentistry department.
Despite receiving no pay while serving in this position,
he made large contributions to the school to keep it in
operation when there were no endowments or funding
from the commonwealth. He was one of the founders
of the Richmond Dental Society in 1894 and practiced
dentistry for more than 56 years.
Dr. Harry Lyons graduated from the
School of Dentistry in 1923 and joined its faculty
shortly afterwards. He rose through the ranks from
instructor to professor went on to chair the Department
of Oral Pathology, Diagnosis and Therapeutics. He was
named dean in 1951 and served in that role for 19
years. Lyons oversaw the move of the school from
McGuire Hall to the Wood Memorial Building and
helped break ground for what is now known as the
Lyons Dental Building.

a national reputation in dental education and was president of the American Association of Dental Schools
and the American Society of Oral Surgery. He also was
a Fellow of the American College of Dentists.

2013 ANNUAL REPORT 15
Dear Friends of Dental Education,
You did it! This year you gave more than 200 students (almost half of the
student body) a scholarship to help defray the gargantuan debt that dental students now accrue.
You did it! This year, you created the first endowed chair in the history of
the VCU School of Dentistry – the S. Elmer Bear Chair in the Department of
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The mark of highest honor in academia, an
endowed chair allows the VCU School of Dentistry to attract and retain the best
and most talented faculty anywhere.
You did it! You brought what started as the James H. Revere Jr.
Lectureship to a distinguished professorship, and it is now on the brink of
becoming the school’s second endowed chair.
You did it! You provided our wonderful faculty with opportunities to continue in their path of life-long learning and gave them needed enhancements for
their departments.
You did it! You raised more money for your school than any year in its
history through reunion gifts.
Every annual fund dollar you gave, every call you answered, every visit from
our staff that you kindly allowed us to pay – it all made a difference.
Do you hear it? That sound is every dental student, every faculty and every
staff member giving you a round of applause and thanks.
You make us proud every day, and we brag about you at VCU: the School of
Dentistry has the highest alumni participation of any school at this University –
more than 26 percent, and,
You did it!
With my most sincere thanks and hopes to see you soon –
either at the school or wherever you are,
Gloria Callihan, J.D.

2013 ANNUAL REPORT 27
Paying it forward with planned gifts
Dr. Marshall C. England, Jr. (D.D.S. ’58, M.S. ’67) has made a name for himself through his
lengthy career as an endodontist and an educator, but his humble beginnings inspired him to help
others through a planned gift.
England, a classic car enthusiast, showed off his wheels at the 2013 Reunion and Alumni Weekend.
Dr. England entered the MCV School of Dentistry as a freshman dental student in 1954, and
times were tough. His family knew that a dental education was worth it, so they all supported him
while he learned and grew as a clinician. And his wife worked hard to keep the young couple
afloat financially throughout the four years till graduation.
Dr. England recalls one particular visit from the dean’s secretary, Ms. Lucy Moffatt, instructing
him to visit the dean’s office. The dean at the time, Dr. Harry Lyons (D.D.S. ’23), was known for
being very straight-laced, meticulous and a bit intimidating. “I must have looked like a deer in
headlights!” said Dr. England. Dean Lyons asked England why he had not joined the Junior
American Dental Association. “When I told him it was because it cost $3 that I didn’t have, Dean
Lyons said, ‘Mr. England, I will loan you $3.’” Although he didn’t take Dean Lyons up on his
offer, he fondly remembers the gesture.
He also was fortunate to have received an educational loan from Delta Sigma Delta, the oldest
and largest historic professional dental fraternity. “They supported me at a time in which I had no
other resource,” shared Dr. England. “Even though it was only $1,200, it kept me in school. And I
always appreciated that.”
Dr. England went on to graduate in 1958 and completed an internship at the U.S. Public Health
Hospital in Seattle, Washington in 1959. He then became a general practitioner in Richmond and
taught part-time at the MCV School of Dentristry while pursuing a master’s degree in anatomy. He
was appointed associate professor in 1965 and taught full-time until 1971 when he was granted a
leave of absence for specialist training in endodontics at the University of Pittsburgh. His career as
an educator spanned a remarkable 27 years – 17 of them as chair of the Department of
28 VCU School of Dentistry
Endodontics. And even after he retired
from teaching, Dr. England has
remained connected to his alma mater.
Through the years, Dr. England has
supported the school, its students and its
faculty through philanthropic giving,
never forgetting the support that he
received during his time of need as a
young student. “I really have strong
feelings for those that support and help
others to achieve the goals that they set
out for themselves,” shared Dr.
England. “And now, I feel that I’d like
to give back to support students in their
dedication to education.”
Dr. England’s most recent gift to the
school came in the form of a bequest
through his estate plan. His bequest will
touch a new generation of dental students and will strengthen this legacy of
teaching excellence and student support.
The decision to make a planned gift
was an easy one. “It was fairly painless!
Giving back is the motivation, and if I
can gain a tax advantage, even better,”
said Dr. England.
The VCU School of Dentistry
recently launched a planned giving
website to make it easy for alumni like
Dr. England to plan for the future. The
site serves as a research tool for alumni
and their advisors to use when creating
an estate plan. Gloria Callihan, associate dean of development and alumni
affairs, said, “I view our office as a
resource for our graduates. It’s amazing
how many people don’t have an estate
plan, so we want to provide as much
information as possible to help you
make the important decisions.”
For more information on planned giving opportunities and estate planning,
please visit www.vcusodgift.org, or contact Gloria Callihan, associate dean
of development and alumni affairs, at gfcallihan@vcu.edu or (804) 828-8101.
