Although no official figure on how much hosting stage two of the Aviva Women’s Tour will benefit the area has been quoted, it has been estimated elsewhere in the country that in previous years it has been as much as £1million. The stage will end in Stratford on Thursday, 16th June, afternoon, after the cyclists have passed through a large part of south Warwickshire on the 86-mile route that will start in the north of the county in Atherstone. Not only is the five-stage, week-long race expected to attract cycling fans to the area, it will also be shown on ITV4, with tourism chiefs excited at the exposure it will bring. It comes just weeks after the commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the death of William Shakespeare brought the world’s media, and thousands of visitors, to Stratford. ‘A real buzz’ “Having seen the success of the Tour de France starting in Yorkshire, and that leading to the creation of the Tour of Yorkshire event, we were delighted that Warwickshire County Council successfully bid for the chance to be involved in the Women’s Tour,” Helen Peters, Chief Executive of Shakespeare’s England, which represents the tourism industry in south Warwickshire, told the Midweek. “The recent Shakespeare celebrations were certainly a success in attracting visitors, but this is something that reflects on the whole of the county of Warwickshire. “It’s also the effect it will leave behind, and we would hope that for those who do come that it will be the first time and not the only time they do, we want what people see to drive them here throughout the year, not just on this particular day. There’s a real buzz about this, although its difficult to put a figure on what it will bring to the economy and the figures do take some time to come through. “The riders will be out in the countryside and we’re hopeful for good weather, of course, everything looks nicer when the sun’s shining! Some 1,017 pupils and teachers from Warwick attempted to break the world record for the largest human image of a bicycle at Warwick Castle last Wednesday, 8th June, as the countdown to the Women’s Tour arrival in the county. Coten End Primary, Westgate Primary, Briar Hill Infants and Newburgh Primary Schools took part in the attempt to break the previous record of 794 people set in Cumbria last year. It will be announced whether the record has been verified by officials later this week. Photo: Chris Fossey Photography. Inset: Olympic 2012 gold medalist, Dani King, will be among the Women’s Tour riders. “The exposure that will bring on the TV coverage will be so valuable, not only to the bigger organisations such as the Birthplace Trust and the RSC, but to the smaller ones, such as B&Bs, they are just as important to the industry. “We are confident this will show the whole of Warwickshire in a really good light.” The tour was first held in 2014, but this is the first time it has come to Warwickshire. Neighbouring Northamptonshire, which will host a stage for the third year running, claimed 67,500 people lined the streets to cheer on the cyclists when it was in the county last year. That, according to an independent report commissioned by Northamptonshire County Council, was worth £1million to the local economy, while the event also inspired 65 per cent of spectators to cycle more often. There will be cycling-related activities in Market Square, Warwick, and Waterside, Stratford, on Thursday. In Stratford, there will also be balance bike races, for children aged from 18months-old to five, at 11.45am and 12.45pm. Warwickshire County Council is hosting the second stage in partnership with the University of Warwick. The tour itself will finish on Sunday in Kettering. FRIENDS of a woman who lost her battle with cancer earlier this year after raising nearly £60,000 to fund medical research, have vowed to carry on fundraising in her memory. They are hosting a charity ball in her honour at the Coventry Hilton on Saturday, 25th June, with the aim of boosting funds by a further £15,000. Natasha Fermor, also known as Tash, from Warwick, set up the charity Tash’s Bashes in 2013, after learning that her breast cancer had spread and was not curable. The pinnacle of the fundraising success achieved by Tash and her friends came at the charity’s first ball last summer which saw 200 dinner guests raise nearly £15,000 in a single night. Added to the money raised by monthly events such as skydives, walks, head shaving, marathons and quizzes, the total raised reached £59,000, which was £9,000 more than Tash had aimed to achieve. This enabled Tash’s Bashes to fund a researcher for a year to carry out ground-breaking research into secondary breast cancer at St Bart’s Medical Institute in London. Before Tash died in January, her friends agreed to host another ball with the aim of funding additional vital research into metastasis, the spread of cancer from one organ to another, at the Francis Crick Institute in London. The evening will be hosted by local Free Radio DJ, JD and the 21st century’s answer to the Andrews Sisters, The Rockabellas, will be providing vintage swing musical entertainment during the evening. Tickets to the black tie event are £45 each and include a three-course dinner and drinks reception. This year two charities were chosen to benefit, the Leamington Rehabilitation Centre and West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre, both of which have personal connections to the pre-school. A mother of two children who attended the pre-school was involved in a road accident and has been receiving treatment and support at the Leamington Rehabilitation Centre. And another child on the roll receives treatment from the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre. Both families accepted the cheques on behalf of the chosen charities. Hazel Jones manages the 52-year-old preschool, which is based in the Warwick Space building in Emscote Road. She said: “We are very proud of the children and their families. We would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and carers of children that attend pre-school for all their help in helping to raise these funds for very personal causes.” For the latest and breaking news and sport, see www.stratford-herald.com, facebook.com/stratfordherald or Twitter, @heraldnewspaper. Mayor Juliet Short and Cyril Bennis, front, with, back, Nick Birch, owner of Avon Boating, Karen Williams, of Escape Arts, and Roxanne Bennis. (Submitted photo) Reviving a tradition MAYOR, Cllr Juliet Short, helped resurrect a traditional Stratford activity earlier this month when she attended a Swan Hopping event on the River Avon. Swan Hopping, was a popular event started in 1867 when the retiring vicar of Holy Trinity Church gave his private flock of swans to the town. The mayor and townsfolk would then go out on the river every year to count and mark the birds before enjoying a picnic on the riverbank. This month’s trial at resurrecting the event was not just about counting swans but was an opportunity to learn more about their habitats and lifecycles, and to raise money for the charities that care for them. The amount collected was £200. Other guests included Cyril and Roxanne Bennis, Maureen Beckett, from Geesepeace, Karen Williams, from Escape Arts, and Nick Birch from Avon Boating who supplied the boat. Seventy five swans were counted on the river, including four signets and a female swan still nesting. Two that were showing signs of requiring treatment were taken to the Wychbold Swan Rescue sanctuary near Droitwich. Tea and cakes were served on Avon Boating’s riverside lawn where Escape Arts supplied materials to help children make their own swans. “Mum and Dad are so happy here and they get to see so much more of their grandchildren” Designed exclusively for the over 55s, this stunning development offers everything you need to live life just the way you want to whilst still being close to your loved ones. “To make everyone welcome” is Queensway Court‘s motto, with a restaurant, coffee shop, bar, hair salon and beautifully landscaped gardens all within the development you’ll find it so easy to invite friends and family to visit. Recipients of money from Persimmon Homes South Midlands Community Champions scheme have included Wellesbourne’s Sports and Community Centre, the Shakespeare Hospice and Pebworth Village Hall. The fund was initially launched in March 2015 and was due to run for one year to support grassroots activities that improve the quality of life for local people. It invites local groups and charities to bid for cash from a £720,000 national fund, with two donations of up to £1,000 being made locally every month. The donations are made across Persimmon Homes’ 28 regions, as well as from its head office in York. The company’s South Midlands region, which covers Warwickshire, now has £24,000 available for the coming year. Andy Peters, Area Managing Director, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the response to the scheme and we are delighted to announce that it will continue for another year. “We hope that our funding over the next 12 months can make a huge difference across our region and want to hear from everyone as we’re determined to donate our money where it will help the most. “All we ask is that the group or charity has already worked hard to raise money themselves, and we will then match this effort with funding of up to £1,000.” To apply to the fund, see www.persimmonhomes.co m/charity Established 1976 All vehicles on offer have MOT and a parts and labour warranty. Gillian Bardsley’s Making Cars at Longbridge, 1905 to the Present Day honours the anniversary of the production of the first Austin car, as well as the 150th birthday of its designer, Herbert Austin. The book is written in partnership with the Reverend Colin Corke, the former Chaplain to the factory, lifelong car enthusiast and now Vicar of Longbridge in Birmingham. It is illustrated with unique images from the official company archive. Depicting both the car design and manufacturing process, it is also an amazing social record of those who worked at Longbridge over the years. A section of colour photographs bring to life the various stages in the life of a car, from sketchbook design, through to clay modelling, manufacture and finally its release into the showroom. The story concludes with the many changes that have taken place since the car plant’s closure in 2005. The area now looks to the future with much of the old site redeveloped for housing, retail and leisure. Although, the Chinese company, MG Motor UK, leases 69 acres of land where initial design development and some final assembly of its new MG range still takes place. Gillian said: “Whilst my book is about Longbridge and Austin, it is not all dry facts about cars! “It is packed full of fascinating photos that capture the social history of the time, and take you back to the fashion, technology and advertising of the day”. The book, published by the History Press, is priced £17.99 either online from the museum’s website, in the gift shop or from local bookshops. We are looking for new members OO. (Submitted photo) STAFF at a company that comes up with technology software for financial companies have used their expertise to turn £50 into an impressive £6,953.58 for The Myton Hospices. A team from Iress, based on Warwick Technology Park, generated enough to provide 278 of specialist care, winning the charity’s Take 50 Challenge. They were among 12 local businesses, which took on the challenge of demonstrating their entrepreneurial ability by turning £50 into as much money as possible in just 50 days. The teams raised a combined £30,153. On Thursday, 26th May, at the end of the challenge, participants were invited to a dinner at Woodland Grange in Leamington, the challenge’s sponsors, where a variety of awards were presented. Best Newcomer was awarded to Bennetts, a specialist motorbike insurer based in Coventry, which raised £2,030.52. This year’s Most Innovative Fundraiser award was presented to George and Co Chartered Surveyors in Rugby, which arranged a ghost hunt at Guy’s Cliff House in Warwick. One of the individuals who went above and beyond to raise money for this year’s Take 50 challenge is Max Burton from John Taylor Funeral Directors in Warwick, who completed a static cycle ride for Myton outside a number of supermarkets across Warwick and Leamington. Max’s efforts, along with events organised by other members of his team, helped raise £6,650. The ambitious employees at John Taylor Funeral Directors also won this year’s Most Improved award after raising £3,810.55 more than during last year’s challenge. Hannah Morris, Partnership Manager at The Myton Hospice, said: “We are delighted with the result of this year’s challenge and would like to thank each and every team member for taking part in this year’s challenge. We need to raise over £8million each year to provide our services in the local area and therefore rely heavily on events such as the Take 50 Challenge to raise these funds, and we hope to see even more teams taking part next year!” Health report impresses award judges THE annual Public Health Report complied by Warwickshire County Council has been praised at the Association of Directors of Public Health AGM, being named runner up in the association’s Annual Report Competition. The report is a statutory responsibility and seeks to inform the Warwickshire population on the health of their communities, as well as providing necessary information to allow decision makers in local health services and authori- ties to address health gaps and priorities. The county’s 2015 report focused on early years, education, mental health, healthy weight, risky behaviours and vulnerable groups for children and young people living in Warwickshire. The judging team commented on clear messages and the layout of the report, the visual design was undertaken by design services at the county council. It was short-listed as one of the top six in the country, and received second place for its ‘engaging content and wow factor’. First place was awarded to Leeds and third place to North Yorkshire. Cllr Les Caborn, the council’s portfolio holder for health, said: “This award demonstrates the hard work and dedication of Warwickshire County Council Public Health in informing the Warwickshire population and working to protect the health of our children and residents.” Tuesday, 14th June, 2016 Midweek Herald Bard rates highly in school poll SHAKESPEARE’S works remain some of our most fondly remembered books, so says a recentlycompiled list of the nation’s favourite school books. Four of the Bard’s plays appear in the top 20 that has been drawn up by Oxford Home Schooling. The highest ranked was Macbeth in sixth place in the poll of 2,000 people, with 17.71 per cent of the votes. Romeo and Juliet (17.16 per cent) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream (15.71 per cent) came in at seventh and eighth place, respectively, and Much Ado About Nothing (5.79 per cent) was listed as the 17th most remembered. Number one in the list was Animal Farm by George Orwell, with 27.08 per cent of the vote. Dr Nick Smith, Principal at Oxford Home Schooling, added: “Shakespeare’s impact on culture is impossible to ignore. Everyone has their own shortlist of the Bard’s greatest works, but I think what everyone agrees upon is an appreciation of the wit, playfulness and drama that feature in all his works.” Top 20 Most Read School Books 1 Animal Farm 2 Great Expectations 3 Lord of the Flies 4 To Kill a Mockingbird 5 Wuthering Heights 6 Macbeth 7 Romeo and Juliet 8 A Midsummer Night’s Dream 9 Of Mice and Men 10 Charlotte’s Web 11 Dracula 12 An Inspector Calls 13 Frankenstein 14 Tess of the d’Urbervilles 15 Catcher in the Rye 16 The Great Gatsby 17 Much Ado About Nothing 18 The Colour Purple 19 Journey’s End 20 Others 7 Midweek Herald 8 Tuesday, 14th June, 2016 Clickety clicking for knitting competition All the latest news and views in the: SHEPHERDS, sheep and lambs are not just for Christmas, Wellesbourne Methodist Church knitters have said. Children and families of Wellesbourne Primary School, as well as organisations that meet in the village, have been challenged to go out walking with friends or family and find the sheep and make a list of all their names. Dawn added: “This activity is not limited to children; of course adults of any age love a challenge too.” She added: “This centenary year of events has provided us with a valuable opportunity to engage more fully with the community. “Without exception shops and businesses have fully engaged in this fun. One business owner, whose location must remain top secret, has built a sheep pen for their two sheep and others are joining the challenge to make homes for their new pets.” The competition comes to a close on Saturday, 18th June, where everyone is invited to attend a party at Wellesbourne Methodist Church, on Bridge Street, from 1pm to 3pm. At the party the challenge will continue to find the remaining 50 sheep and lambs grazing in the church. There will be fun, stories, crafts, games and food at the party. Children must be accompanied by an adult. There will be a separate coffee lounge available for those adults whose children want to search the church by themselves. Dr Melanie Griffiths said being diagnosed a second time was ‘like Groundhog Day’ because it meant repeat treatment on the opposite breast, exactly a year after her first diagnosis. Now the 49-year-old mum-of-two will share her story on stage in front of more than 3,000 women in a bid to highlight the importance of early diagnosis and funding for research. She is urging anyone who can to join in Stratford’s Race for Life at Ragley Hall on Thursday, 16th June, or the Stoneleigh Race for Life on Saturday, 25th, and Sunday, 26th June. Places are still available. Melanie, who is Head of Service Improvement at Warwick Hospital, said: Dr Melanie Griffiths will sound the starting horn at the Stratford Race for Life at Ragley Hall. “Never in my mind did I think that there could be another cancer growing in my opposite breast after all the chemotherapy I had. “It was very difficult to cope with. “We were just getting back to normal and then all of a sudden every day was like Groundhog Day. I started chemotherapy treatment exactly a year and two days after the first dose.” Melanie will start the 5km and 10km Race for Life at Ragley Hall, at 7.30pm, on Thursday, as well as the Stoneleigh events in Kenilworth. She will also be a marshal at Ragley Hall and the Kenilworth Pretty Muddy. To enter a Race for Life, see www.raceforlife.org or call 0300 123 0770. Though the MASH opened its doors to referrals in May, the official opening at Old Shire Hall in Warwick last week gave partner organisations from across the county chance to hear about its progress. The idea of the MASH is to bring together a number of different organisations including the police and health services, to better protect vulnerable residents. The Mash was launched because issues and challenges surrounding safeguarding span beyond the remit of any single organisation. The hub will focus on early engagement and providing support to potentially vulnerable children, adults and their families. Since opening its doors in May, the Warwickshire MASH has been focusing solely on cases relating to children and young people and this will be followed by the protection of vulnerable adults in September 2016. John Coleman, Manager of the MASH, said: “The Warwickshire MASH is already proving itself to be a vital resource in making sure our most vulnerable residents are safe and protected from harm. I would like to congratulate all partners for their dedication and hard work.” Deputy Chief Constable Karen Manners from Warwickshire Police, said: “The Warwickshire MASH has moved safeguarding to a better level with agencies based in the same location, sharing information in real-time to enable more informed and faster decision making to protect the most vulnerable in Warwickshire.” For more information about the Warwickshire MASH visit www.warwickshire.gov.uk/mash Some of the staff who will be based at the MASH at last week’s official launch. Girls win first trophy STRATFORD Thunderbirds secured their first trophy since being launched in Warwickshire’s first Hi 5 tournament. The Thunderbirds fielded five teams of their youngest members, from under-nines to under-11s, in the event at Caludon Castle Sports Centre, Coventry, and took the top three places in the Under-11s. Amy Barrett, captain of the Thunderbirds A team, was presented with the trophy after her team won six matches and drew one with their team-mates, Thunderbirds B. The club was only formed nine months ago. Around 90 youngsters, ranging from Year Four to Year Nine, train regularly and such is the demand that the club is looking for further venues. Head coach, Kelly McCormack, said: “I am immensely proud of the players, team managers, parents and club officials who attended this event. It really has put Thunderbirds on the map! “With 19 teams taking part from both schools and clubs around Warwickshire, this is a massive achievement for the girls Panthers swept aside STRATFORD were dismissed for just 39 runs as they suffered a ten-wicket defeat to Wombourne at Swans Nest Lane on Saturday. Andrew Fisher top scored with 16 for the Panthers, but seven of his colleagues were dismissed without scoring. It left Wombourne the formality of securing a win that keeps the pressure on Harborne at the top of Birmingham League Division Two. Only five players are allowed on the court at any one time with a strict rotation through every position. Players must be fit and skilled to play both offensive and defensive positions. Chairperson, Lucy Hargraves, said: “The way the club has taken off has been a phenomenal suc- cess. It’s been fantastic. We keep growing and growing and now we’ve got nearly 100 players.” The Thunderbirds train on Mondays at Shottery, and on Tuesdays at KES.
