Kava_ENG - Estonian Embassy in Riga
Dance and Music Productions
of the State Theatre Vanemuine
season
2012/2013
The Vanemuine is the oldest theatre in Estonia,
founded in Tartu in 1870. It was also the first
professional theatre in Estonia (1906) and is the only
three-genre theatre in the country, staging operas,
operettas and musicals, classical ballet and modern
dance and drama. The theatre has three different
buildings and employs more than 350 people,
including a ballet troupe with a highly international
cast, and a large symphony orchestra. The theatre often
hosts guest soloists. The Vanemuine is a repertory
theatre – every season the programme includes more
than 40 different productions in a variety of genres.

CABARETNEW
Musical in two acts

Stage Designer Roy Spahn (Germany)

Choreographer Jean Renshaw (Great Britain)
“I find this city enchanting. Everything is so full of life and
lavish here. People have been taken over by an obsessive thirst for
having fun. If it were a film, I wonder what could happen here? A
volcano could erupt, the city might be struck by a tempest and a
flood…” (Cliff)
CABARET lets the audience take a glimpse at a pleasure-seeking
society. The life filled with frivolous and promiscuous entertainment reminds us of someone dancing on a precipice.
The song “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” hints at the emerging national socialism that does not care about the wellbeing of the individual nor about the world of artists and outcasts.
CABARET has been hugely successful all over the world thanks to
its enthralling music and fantastic show combined with a serious
theme. A theme that always touches, and moves us, the audience.

GREASE NEW
Musical in two acts
Director Georg Malvius (Sweden)
Musical Director and Conductor Tarmo Leinatamm
Stage Designer Ellen Cairns (Scotland)
Lighting Designer Palle Palmé (Sweden)
Greasers was the name given to a working class youth subculture
in the United States as the male members of the subgroup were in
the habit of greasing their hair with pomade.
The musical is set in Rydell High School in 1959. Having had a
love affair in summer, Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski end
up in the same school in autumn. However, at school Danny is the
leader of the gang of greasers called the Burger Palace Boys, and
being the leader it is not suitable for Danny to show his feelings.
The overly demure and disappointed Sandy then joins the girls’
gang called the Pink Ladies. After several ordeals Danny finally
realises that Sandy is his true love. Sandy, in turn, finds that in
order to win Danny back, she needs to change her image...
A musical of the same name was produced in 1978 in Hollywood,
directed by Randal Kleiser, making John Travolta, who was only
23 at the time, and the Australian singer Olivia Newton-John, famous all over the world.

CASANOVA
Ballet in two acts
Choreographer-Director, Costume and Music Designer David
Sonnenbluck (Belgium)
Historical costumes Mare Tommingas
Light Designers Imbi Mälk, Andres Sarv
From time to time the fate of Casanova has excited the desire for
beauty. That scandalous Venetian was not only an adventurer,
fraud and a freethinker as he is usually portrayed, but also a poet,
memoir writer, philosopher and musician. Emanating from that,
David Sonnenbluck with its style as well as music has created a
timeless ballet – it is baroque as well as contemporary at the same
time.
The production makes use of the music by Mozart, Vivaldi, Typsi
and traditional Arabic music.

TOSCA Opera in two acts
Musical Director and Conductor Paul Mägi
Director Mikk Mikiver
Production brought back to the stage by Ervin Õunapuu
Stage Designer Ervin Õunapuu
Costume Designer Mare Raidma
The production which premiered in 1995 is directed in the
honour of Mikk Mikiver’s 70th birthday.
The plot of the opera is set in Rome in 1800. The Republic of Rome
has been overthrown and a brutal police dictatorship has been established in the town. The central character in the opera is the
ruthless power-seeking Baron Scarpia. In parallel one sees the unwinding of the passionate and tragic love story of the artist Mario
Cavaradossi and singer Floria Tosca.

WERTHER Opera in two acts
Musical Director and Conductor Paul Mägi
Conductor Lauri Sirp
Director Albert-André Lheureux (Belgium)
Designer Liina Keevallik
Werther is hopelessly in love with the beautiful Charlotte, who
returns his affection. However, because of a promise she made
to her dying mother, the girl marries another man and Werther
commits suicide.
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s novel The Sorrows of Young
Werther published in 1774.
The deeply romantic story of a young poet was a sensation and became one of the most read books of the time. The highly popular
novel even influenced fashion – young men throughout Europe
tried to emulate Werther’s style of clothing. Alas, this success had
a less pleasant side to it, as many young men also committed suicide in the same way as Werther.

Ballet in two acts
Choreographer-Director, Libretto Pär Isberg (Royal Swedish
Ballet)
Set Designer Bo Ruben Hedwall (Sweden)
Costume Designer Emma Gauffin (Sweden)
Conductor Lauri Sirp
Specially for the Vanemuine troupe, a totally new libretto has been
created to the „Sleeping Beauty“. The era as well as the area of
activity has been readjusted. Instead of the fairytale castle we see a
beach resort from the beginning of the 20th century…

FAIRY QUEEN
(HALDJAKUNINGANNA)
Semi-opera in two acts
The Annual Awards 2012 of the Estonian Theatre Union – Jury’s
Special Award to the creative team
Director, Choreographer, Visuals Sasha Pepelyaev (Russia)
Music Director and Conductor Lauri Sirp
Costume Designer Liisi Eelmaa
“Purcell’s „Fairy Queen“ seems to be a brilliant and enigmatic
example of conceptual baroque performance. Originally performed as a part of colossal court show, it carries on its own beauty and secrets. Fantastic, naive and wise characters do not hurry
to reveal their goals and means. Decorated by the Purcell’s melodies’ jewellery, they observe Shakespeare’s „A Midsummer Night’s
Dream“ and make their own comments and conclusions.
We can only guess what all those stories, words and sounds meant
400 years ago. But the desire to stage this opera now immediately
demands a whole set of keys for the endless doors of its labyrinths.
I went to the area of machinery and absurd mechanics to search
for those keys.
So here it is: a kinetic conceptual „Fairy Queen“ driving through
the forests and palaces of „No fear Shakespeare“. “
Alexander Pepelyaev

(KAUNITAR JA KOLETIS)
Ballet
Music: Joaquin Turina, Malcolm Arnold
Director-Choreographer Silas Stubbs
The ideas behind the story are a lot to do with how people are
judge or treated differently because of their appearance. Because
of how the two main characters look, they both feel they do not
fit into society. She is beautiful and so she expected to marry well.
But it has attracted someone she does not love. He has scars on
his face so is seen as a monster by society. They both are dreamers
so they feel trapped and constricted by the depressing world they
live in. Although they are very different people they find that they
share a similar mind and imagination. It is a love story also...they
are attracted by each other inner beauty etc.

Opera in two acts
Musical director and conductor Paul Mägi
Conductor Lauri Sirp
Director Dmitry Bertman (Helikon-Opera, Moscow)
Designer Igor Nezhny (Helikon-Opera, Moscow)
Costume Designer Tatyana Tulubyeva (Helikon-Opera,

Based on Alexandr Pushkin’s verse novel by the same name
“Eugene Onegin” is a masterpiece among Tchaikovsky’s ten operas
and Russian classical operas in general.
A young poet Lenski is engaged to cheerful Olga. Staying at his
fiancée’s country house, he introduces his friend Pushkin to his
future mother in law and Olga’s sister Tatyana. The dreamy and
modest Tatyana falls in love with the dandy Pushkin, who arrogantly rejects her feelings. Melancholic, yet full of longing, passion
and love the opera offers beautiful flowing melodies, charming
choir sets and engaging dance music.
