WELCOME
We’re proud and excited to present the 12th Annual Boulder International Film Festival,
a wildly successful non-profit festival staffed almost entirely by volunteers. It’s all because
of the huge, film-hip Boulder audiences who show up by the tens of thousands to be part
of the vast world of film, ideas and passions.
Because of BIFF’s tremendous growth, we’ve added three new venues this year: the Boulder
Art Cinema and, for the first time, theaters in Longmont and Broomfield.
For opening night, we’re excited to feature Miss Sharon Jones!, a rousing documentary from
two-time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple, who follows soul-singing powerhouse Sharon Jones
and her band, the Dap-Kings, through a tumultuous two years of despair and triumph.
Critics have called it “the best musical documentary of the decade.”

Fresh from its smash opening-night premiere at Sundance 2016, our closing night film,
Norman Lear: Just Another Version of You, features the comedic imagination that made Lear
the most influential and controversial writer and producer in the history of television.
The highlight of the festival will be a tribute and interview with a member of Hollywood
royalty, Bruce Dern, who is currently appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight,
which has been nominated for three Oscars. Mr Dern has appeared in more than 80 films
and has been nominated for two Oscars.
We are awed this year to present, in person, a man who is a significant part of human
history. Real-life space cowboy Captain Gene Cernan, who stepped off the moon in 1972,
will be in Boulder to talk about his new film The Last Man on the Moon.
On Friday night, BIFF presents CineCHEF, a culinary competition that will pit Boulder’s most
famous chefs in a cooking shootout. These are the renowned culinary wizards who helped
get Boulder its “Foodiest Town” title from Bon Appétit. Chefs will choose a movie theme and
serve small plates based on that theme.
BIFF’s Global Town Hall will bring together festivalgoers and experts from around the world
for a live video hookup and discussion focusing on the film Code: Debugging the Gender
Gap and the lack of women in tech.
The Global Town Hall is just a part of BIFF’s pioneering Call2Action program. Attend a
TalkBack after a Call2Action film and engage with filmmakers, presenters and fellow film
lovers over concrete ways to translate this energy and passion into action.

Bruce Dern’s tremendous career is made up of playing both modern-day heroes and legendary villains. Through decades of critically
acclaimed performances, Dern has acquired the reputation of being
one of the most talented and prolific actors of his generation.
A celebrated stage actor, Dern was trained by famed director Elia
Kazan at The Actor’s Studio and made his film debut in Kazan’s Wild
River (1960). In the 1960s, Dern appeared regularly in contemporary Western TV series, as well as Alfred Hitchcock’s television series.
Hitchcock was such a fan of Dern that he cast him in both Marnie
and Family Plot (Hitchcock’s final film).
During the 1960s, Dern went on to work with director Roger Corman
and appeared in several of his classic and decade-defining films,
including Wild Angels. He received critical success for films such as
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Drive, He Said, and went down
in history for his role as Long Hair in The Cowboys in which he became the first man ever to kill John Wayne. Dern went on to star in
such classic films like The King of Marvin Gardens, as well as playing Tom Buchanan in The Great Gatsby (for which he received a
Golden Globe nomination). It was his brilliant and powerful performance in Hal Ashby’s Coming Home that earned him both Academy
Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Dern co-starred with Charlize Theron in Monster, one of the most
critically acclaimed independent films of all time, and has recently
worked with iconic directors Francis Ford Coppola in Twixt and Quentin Tarantino in Django Unchained. Most recently, he worked with
Tarantino in The Hateful Eight. Dern won the 2013 Best Actor Award
at the Cannes Film Festival, and garnered another Academy Award
nomination for Best Actor in Nebraska directed by Alexander Payne.

died a year later of AIDS at age 34. At the time, Brookner was best
known for his debut film, Burroughs: The Movie, and, 20 years later,

baby seal hunt, Brian Davies started a movement to end it. He
raised money to bring media out to document the hunt on the remote ice floes with images of cruel, bloody slaughters, often while
the mother seal looked on helplessly. This led to international outrage and the hunt was shut down. But now, under massive lobbying
by the fur industry, Canadian politicians have revived the hunt. Brian
Davies is now nearly 80, but a young, tough activist has taken up
the torch. Sheryl Fink is leading the hunt watch and fighting to completely end the commercial seal hunt, once and for all. But the industry is fighting back.

A real-life space cowboy, Captain Gene Cernan logged almost 600
hours in space, 73 of them on the moon. He is the only man to
have descended toward the moon in the lunar lander twice, the first
during Apollo 10 (a non-landing mission), and the second driving a
lunar rover on the moon in Apollo 17. He also took one of the first
space walks and set the speed record for a manned vehicle, hitting
24,791 miles per hour during Apollo 10’s fiery re-entry into Earth’s
atmosphere. When Captain Cernan stepped off the moon in 1972,
he left his footprints and his daughter’s initials in the lunar dust.
Only now, 40 years later, is he ready to share his epic but deeply
