Sherwood Residents Commit to Our Community
♦
Our Sherwood Women’s Club , generously gave $300, towards the
purchase of plants and mulch for the Oak Stream and Timberline Drive
entrances. Nina Conn ,Liz Shuler, and Virginia Dietz planted the
Red Knock Out Roses at the Oak Stream entrance. Thanks to Charles
and Eleanor Asaud for allowing unlimited use of their water to
keep the plants alive. Thanks to a Wilcrest Walk resident who also watered the plants when she could. Drawf Yupon shrubs were planted at
the Timberline Entrance.
♦ Roberto Zumeta, owner of Brick Restoration
, Inc , and a Sherwood resident, offered his services
to power wash all of our entrance signs. He also did
much needed repairs to the masonry at the Hazlehurst
entrance. He has helped with the entrances in the past
and continues to be a “Sherwood supporter.” Thanks
so much for the much needed help.
♦ Robin & Jeff Tompkins, Marian Geiger, Steve
Tompkins, and Jose Grimaldo, donated the materials and the time
to make custom designed Life Guard Chairs for the pool to replace the
old ones that were falling apart and no longer safe.

John Johnson, used his trailer to haul mulch and heavy yard mix to the pool
and entrance areas. A time consuming effort, with the Brittmore construction!

Vernon Dietz and Andrew Pasek distributed the mulch and hauled the heavy
yard mix to the pool grounds to level the lawn. They also mulched the Oak
Steam Entrance. The Dietzs painted all the entrances.
♦
Samual Raiffeisen helped with the pool fence line clean up and dirt distribution.
♦
John Johnson, Wesley Stuart, and Andrew Pasek removed the huge pile of
tree branches from the pool parking lot.
All entrances are cleaned, signs painted, repaired and landscaping redone.
Pool area cleaned out, fence painted, new lifeguard stands, diving boards
painted, WOW .
PROHIBITED YARD PARKING APPLICATION APPROVED
After a long and sometimes frustrating process, the Sherwood Oaks
Property Owners Association received approval from the City of Houston to
establish our subdivision as a “Prohibited Yard Parking Requirement Area”.
We have seen a noticeable decrease of parking on the grass since we sent
the approval notice to all on the email list.
This is your neighborhood and this accomplishment of the Board will help to
maintain the value and beauty of the area. Thanks to all who had the signs
in their yards, your patience was appreciated.

swim season
was fun and
exciting for
all involved!
Under the
guidance of
our new
head coach

Team swimmers started
out the season mid April
with a new
“Pre-Season
Dry Land Exercise Program”. This
program was
designed to
give our
swimmers
the opportunity to get in
shape before
the swim practice for the season began. Once swim practice began , our swimmers were provided with
Stroke Clinics , along with pool practice each day. This helped swimmers improve their strokes.
New this season, Sherwood joined the Memorial Spring Branch Swimming Conference. This conference
focuses on promoting sportsmanship and competition within the Spring Branch and Memorial Areas.
This is a very friendly league, and it was really nice to be competing again on our home turf, rather
than driving to Katy for meets. This has proven to be a great fit for our team . For the first time in a
couple of years, we were able to host meets at out home pool. This gives us a great chance to show off
our team to our neighbors and our beautiful shaded pool area to other teams.
Our head coach Megan Doby, and assistant coaches Michael Bishop, Kasey Bishop, Meg Winata, and
Gene Koo trained our swimmers well. Our team was the smallest team in the conference, yet at the
“Meet of Champs” we were able to increase our overall team ranking by two places, beating out two
bigger teams that had beaten us earlier in the season.
Many of our swimmers qualified to swim at the Meet of Champs this year. Sherwood’s Hannah Stuart
was a standout for our team this year by winning First Place Overall, Girls 13-14 Butterfly. Way to go
Hannah! We also won the Memorial Spring Branch Swimming Conference 2010 Sportsmanship Award.

This season we received lots of support from out local community business and neighborhood families.
These sponsorship dollars helped to keep our registration fees affordable for families and to fund our
scholarships for swimmers that would otherwise not have been able to join the team. We were able to
purchase much needed equipment for the team, such as hand paddles and a lane pace clock.

MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD by Michale Danke, Pres.
The Board is encouraged by all of the discussion regarding the need for an association fee increase. We have read all emails and appreciate that so many of you are willing to openly share
your thoughtful comments on the issue of neighborhood expense.
To give some background, you need to know that Nina, Bob,Walter, Sheri and I have
consistently economized where possible, while still maintaining the standard of services we believe the majority of neighbors expect. This has involved cutting expenses,
recruiting volunteers to do needed maintenance and repairs, deferring projects and
drawing down the association balance. We obtain multiple bids for each service contract , we have “fired” non-performing and overcharging vendors, and we closely audit all expenditures. I believe that we obtain good value for money spent. Unfortunately, costs for the services we require as a neighborhood do not stay fixed forever.
A partial list of measures that your neighbors on the board have taken to reduce expenses include eliminating paid landscaping maintenance of the three neighborhood
entrances, deferring much needed pool main maintenance ( such as bathhouse siding), adding timers to the pool pumps to reduce electricity use, and renegotiating
contracts ( even mid-contract).
In the last four years, we have managed our way through a decade of deferred pool maintenance, gas increase to $4/gal with subsequent significant increase in trash collection fees, Hurricane Ike and a nearby influx of Section 8 housing residents. All of this with a very modest
three percent increases in association fees, as outlined in the by-laws. This last year, it became clear these approaches, along with savvy and hope, would not be enough.
We did not reach this decision point for the neighborhood suddenly. The fact that our expenses cannot continue to exceed revenue indefinitely was clearly discussed at the November
2009 annual meeting and in the March 2010 newsletter.
We have reached a point where our by-laws dictate a vote in favor of an increase in association fees, or a substantial reduction in the quality of services the association provides for the
neighborhood. The Board is obligated to put the issue to the residents.

Many of you have commented on upon possible solutions to our current budget shortfall.
Neighbors have suggested completely eliminating expense categories, such as security, the
pool, private trash pickup, insect control and others. More moderate suggestions include, reducing trash service, increasing COP( dependently entirely on volunteers) while decreasing
hours of constable patrol. Should the request for an increase fail, all ideas will be considered.
The Board will be faced with some tough decisions as it tries to balance the needs of the residents and the future “health “ of our neighborhood.

neighborhood, can come together, have civil and respectful discussion of the issues and the
solutions, and vote on the proposed fee increase.

DEED RESTRICTIONS, WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY?
.As we drive thru the neighborhood, it is obvious that the overwhelming
majority of our residents care about their homes , keep them neat ,
trimmed, painted, and maintained. It is also clear that those that don’t
stick out like a sore thumb and make Sherwood neighbors crazy.
The Board sends letters to each location that has issues and 95% of our
neighbors fix the issues immediately. Some issues, like the garage on Pecan Creek took awhile, but the Board had persistence and the garage
was rebuilt without having to resort to expensive legal action.
It is best for the community to have simple resolution to these issues. It
makes for better relations with neighbors and it is cost effective. We pursued the issue of parking on the grass, got out application passed and at
this time it is a non-issue. We all have busy lives, things happen, and
suddenly we are “behind” on yard and home maintenance.
All of the work on Deed Restrictions by the Board does not , at
this point, cost anything but the time of the Board member
working on the issue. All liens are filed by a member, without
the expense of a lawyer.
So, who is responsible for Deed Restrictions? Perhaps we all are. Each
of us needs to talk to neighbors that seem to have an issue. Each of us
needs to send our concerns to the Board to check if perhaps they are already working on it. Each of us needs to know what the restrictions are
and make sure that your home is the best it can be.
We will not publish specifics regarding letters we have sent, since in the
spirit of “community”, we need to be respectful.
STRIP CENTER STILL A CONCERN by Jim Allosso
At the last Annual meeting I volunteered to act as a liaison to the Board, regarding issues with the strip center at the front of Sherwood Oaks. I recently spoke with Rasoul, the owner of the automotive shop in the center. The move that was to take place on August 14th fell through. He
has retained a Houston Realtor to help him find a location within a
close radius, and is looking a five locations on Upland. He wants to
move, since his location has a leaking roof and the owner will not fix it.
It may take two to three months for him to relocate.
I will call officer Ceglaski again about the broken windows and ask that
they are boarded up. Once the automotive business leaves, we will
need to all call 311 and press for demolition. Also call District A office
and let them know the issues and concerns. Please feel fee to contact
me with any information you have and any issues. I will work with all of you and
the Board to get this resolved.

WATER AERBOICS TO CONTINUE UNTIL OCT 1ST
Alice Granbery wants everyone to know that at this time water aerobics is Monday
through Friday from 9am to 10 am. Come on down, attendance has been steady, but
we would love to have a lot more participate in the fun.
As soon as the weather gets cooler in the mornings, we will change the time to 4pm to
5pm. We welcome all, young, old, male, and female. You do not need to be in great
shape, just do what you can of the exercises, and you will be pleased to see how fast
you progress.

CITIZENS ON PATROL by Betty Sadler
With summer almost over and school started, we are grateful for little to no
crime in our neighborhood. We have had an issue with cars getting egged.
This is serious, as you know, eggs can ruin a paint job on a car. Thanks to our
evening and night constables , this problem has been alleviated. This issue is
related to bored, unsupervised children and parents who do not take responsibility for
their kids.

A big thanks to all of our new COP drivers, that are on board and contributing to the
safety of our neighborhood. Even if you are working full time, we can always use drivers
after 5pm and before the work day begins. We also need drivers on the weekends. There
are plenty of flexible time slots for all our neighbors to give their two hours a month to
help keep our community safe.
This program is not supported by your association fees. It is an all volunteer
program that is made up of your neighbors who give of their time and their gas.
We have been getting a lot of information via email from surrounding neighborhoods with
increasing crime activity. To my knowledge none of these neighborhoods have an active
COP program. Criminals do not like being watched. Our drivers have a sign on their car
like the logo above, indicating City of Houston Police Department sponsorship.
There will be a neighborhood COP Certification/Recertification meeting in September
or October. It will be at the Sherwood Pool and finger foods will be served. Those that attended in the past enjoyed meeting new neighbors and visiting with old friends. Plan to
attend and bring a neighbor with you. We lose drivers due to relocation , health issues,
and death. We can’t have too many drivers. We have time slots that go unfilled each day.
Sherwood Oaks has always been know for a willingness to create a better neighborhood
and COP is an excellent way to volunteer your time.

COP or Citizens on Patrol, is a community program sponsored
by the Houston Police Department, where residents of a
neighborhood, train to patrol their own community to be eyes
and ears for the area. They never confront any situation, but report any unusual activity to the police. Having this program
takes a lot of volunteers, driving each day, seven days a week.
We all have a stake in making our community a safe place to live.

CONSTABLES WORK TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE
Sergeant Hauer and Constable Benford patrol throughout our community many
hours each week. A detailed report is given weekly to the Board on their activities.
They continue to stop speeders, stop sign runners, as well as monitor the activity of
persons walking or driving within our community who do not live here.

SOMETHING OR
Constable Benford patrols late night on weekends and has been able to reduce loud
party activity as well as “stray persons” loitering on our streets. Many of their traffic
stops will result in a warning, unless the person stopped is wanted on a warrant, the
vehicle is not properly registered, or the driver has no license.
SOMEONE
They maintain special watch on certain homes that have known issues or homes
that the owner is on vacation.
HAS THE CONSTABLE
Bottom line, there is not much going on within Sherwood that they are not aware of.
Of course, they are not here all the time, so things can and will happen. We cannot
let down our guard and must inform the constables about things such as the late
night ringing of doorbells. This helps them target where and what to watch.

We benefit from the longevity of our constables, they really know Sherwood and the
residents. We will not publish specifics regarding people and arrests, since sometimes they are our neighbors. If you have any questions regarding a particular issue
you are concerned about, please contact any board member.
LAST DAY OF SCHOOL SWIM PARTY by Virginia Dietz
On June 2, 2010 the Sherwood Oaks Swim Team hosted a end of
school party for the entire neighborhood. You didn’t even have to have
a child to come for the fun!
Chili dogs and corn were served to all. The food was a huge hit !
There were pool balls of all sizes and float tubes for the swimmers to
play with, as well as great music. At 7:30 a 12 foot inflatable movie
screen and projector were set up. The screen faced toward the pool
and the movie “Grease” was run. It was a “dive in “ movie that you
could watch from in the pool or the grass. Everyone had a fantastic
time! Pie throw ( see picture) was enjoyed by
all.
Several families from the neighborhood without
a swim team connection came and had a ball.
It is hoped that next year we can have a larger
turnout of “non- swim team” families, and they
can see how much fun it is to meet folks, eat ,
swim and watch a movie. The cost of the party
was footed by the swim team, as a thank you
to all for supporting us this year.

SHERWOOD POOL HAS A GREAT SEASON by Adrienne Danke,
The Sherwood Oaks Pool has had another great season! This was in no small part to our
management company, Quality Aquatics. We were so pleased to have great lifeguards,
a clean facility, beautiful sparkling water, and a responsive management team.
The pool was heavily used this summer by the residents , and it was wonderful to see
everyone enjoying a cool break from the summer heat. We were also pleased that the
neighborhood swim team enjoyed using it once again. They have reciprocated the generosity we have extended to them by providing improvements to the pool area, using
their own funds. This year the neighborhood were the proud recipients of a fabulous
outdoor pool shower, as well as power washing of the concrete tables and the basketball court. All of this was paid for by the swim team, no cost to the neighborhood, yet
for all to enjoy!
In light of the association's current financial constraints, the pool committee of the
board, has worked hard to keep expenses down. Last December, Powell Scheumack
generously donated his time and knowledge to install a special timer that turns the pool
on and off during the colder months to save on electricity. Sheri Feithshans consulted
with the phone company and determined that we can place the pool’s phone on
“vacation hold”, which reduced our cost by 75% for seven months out of the year. Quality Aquatics, raised this years contract by only $850, despite their quickly increasing
costs of pool chemicals, labor and insurance. Much needed maintenance to the rotting
siding on the pool’s pump house and the bath house have been delayed. Tree care for
the pool’s two large oak trees will require a professional , and this has been deferred.

The Pool Committee is grateful to all of the residents that donated time and money in
the spring to repaint the wrought-iron fence, power wash and repaint the diving board
supports, build new lifeguard chairs, freshen up the landscaping, trim the smaller trees
and haul debris away. Without this kind of generosity of time and money, none of these
much needed projects could have been done. We were able to accomplish all of this no
cost to the association!
Sadly, the pool season is coming to a close. We hope that you are all proud of our beautiful pool and that you have taken advantage of a refreshing swim this summer!

Out of the 342 resident of Sherwood, we still lack about 70 email addresses. We are
aware that of this 70 about 20 have no computer. We don’t really know why the others won’t send their email to Irene, so that they can have updates and the newsletter
by email. Irene does not give the email to anyone, not even the board. She is very
protective of your privacy.
If you have no computer, we will try to get a copy of the newsletter to you, either by
one of your neighbors, or a volunteer who has agreed to help. If you know your
neighbor does not have email, it would be great to have them over to see the newsletter , since the pictures look so much better in color!

JAN WEISS, LONG TIME SHERWOOD NEIGHBOR PASSED AWAY AUG 17
Sherwood friends said good bye to Jan on Wed. Aug 25, at the
Holy Cross Lutheran church. Jan and her family were residents
on Pecan Creek for more than thirty years. She was an active
part of the Sherwood community, serving as President of the
Civic Club and as President of the Garden Club. This picture was
taken at the May 2009 installation of the Women’s Club ( formerly the Garden Club). Her bright smile and positive look on life
will be missed by all that had the good fortune to know her.

Peter Gannon, Sherwood friend and neighbor, passed away Aug 17. Friends from the community sat
together at his service on Aug 24th at St. John Vianney Catholic Church. The current Board members for the Sherwood Oaks Property Owner’s Association wishes to recognize Peter for his service
and leadership as Vice President of the organization for four years. Peter was dedicated to making
his community a better place to live and we thank him for that.

Women’s Club Installation
The Sherwood Women’s Club held their annual installation of Officers for 20102011 in May. The setting was the beautiful chapel at the Brookwood Community in
Brookshire. Once the installation was done, we all went to the fabulous café at the
Brookwood Community for a delicious lunch. We also had ample time to look
around the gift shop and greenhouses before loading on the bus for the trip home.
The first meeting for this year will be held at the Hampton Inn on September

The Women’s Club would like to increase their membership. All women that live in Sherwood
are invited to attend.
A coffee will be held on September 9th at the home of June O’ Driscoll , at 11419 Pecan
Creek. This is for all women in Sherwood, it is not necessary to be a member of the
Women’s Club to attend. Come on out, meet other women in the neighborhood and learn
more about the activities of the Women’s Club.

JOIN US FOR ADVENTURE AND FUN by Darline Falke
Each month of the school year the
Sherwood Oak’s Women’s Club takes
trips, via a Harris County Precinct 3
bus, to areas around Houston. We invite all Sherwood adults to join us on
these trips.The more the merrier! The
bus will depart from and return to the
swimming pool parking area. We will
send a reminder email each month
giving specific information for each
trip.
There is no charge for the bus, but we
will generally collect $1 additional from
each person to cover the driver’s lunch
and/or tip. All dates, events and prices
are tentative until confirmed with Precinct 3 transportation department and
destination personnel. We must have
at least 10 riders to secure a bus. Feel
free to invite friends, adult family, and
spouses to any and all events. This will
held ensure that we have enough riders to secure the bus. Some events
include a guide with a set fee and the
more we have the cheaper the cost
per person. If a lift is needed for
wheelchairs, etc., please let Darline
Falke know when you sign up.

Your Sherwood Property Owners’ Board of Directors are volunteers from the
neighborhood that give time and service to make Sherwood a better place to
live. Board meetings are held at least quarterly and more frequent if needed.
Minutes are kept of the meetings. Individual Board members cannot make a
decision on their own. It takes a majority vote of the Board to make a decision. Different members take on project responsibilities and report to the
Board as a whole and go to the Board for all votes and decisions. Below are
the members and their project chairmanship. Please contact them with your
ideas, suggestions and volunteer to help.

IMPORTANT REMINDER
Mark your calendar for SEPTEMBER 14 at 7pm! Please make sure that at least one
person per household shows up at Sherwood Elementary School to attend the
special meeting called by the Sherwood Property Owner’s Board. There will be information regarding the proposed increase in association fee’s. Each person present will have the chance to be heard. At the
conclusion of the meeting those in good standing ( fees paid for 2010) will vote on the proposal.
