Converting your Car to LPG/Autogas with Birway
Converting your Car to LPG/Autogas with Birway www.birway.co.uk What is an LPG Conversion? An LPG conversion will enable you to run your car on LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas), also referred to as ‘Autogas’. It is an additional fuel system, the existing petrol system remains unaffected. This means your vehicle will become a ‘duel fuel’ car. 1. A filler point is mounted to the exterior of the vehicle, usually in the body work, the bumper or fixed to the tow bars. 1 2. Refuelling an LPG car is quick and easy! Consult Birway about the possible locations of your fill point! 3. 2 An LPG tank is fitted in place of the spare wheel (even if the wheel is mounted underneath the boot floor) so there is no loss of boot space. (Carry a can of ‘tyreweld’ so the tyre can easily be re-inflated in the event of a puncture.) 3 4. Boot can be recarpeted/trimmed. 5. Under the bonnet, the LPG passes through a ‘reducer’ which vaporises the LPG before it reaches the engine. This is controlled via the LPG ECU which is calibrated to achieve the same level of power and performance that the petrol system achieves. 6. The system is fully automatic! The car will initially start in petrol. Once the engine has warmed up, the Reducer is able to transform the LPG from liquid state to gaseous form. If the tank runs out of LPG, the system will automatically revert to the petrol system! 7. The gas is fed into the manifold through the LPG injectors. There is an LPG injector for every petrol injector. During the changeover the LPG injectors will open one by one as the petrol injectors close to give a smooth and unnoticeable transition. 8. A small switch is installed inside the vehicle which allows the driver to change over manually. An LED located on the switch informs the driver when the vehicle is running on petrol (red) or LPG (green). There are 4 lights to indicate the level of fuel in the LPG tank. 9. BRC’s highly sophisticated software allows the installer to make precise calibrations by communicating with the ECU. All of the components conform to strict European safety codes and legislation. www.birway.co.uk 4 5 6 7 8 9 Why should l choose BRC? We understand that there are many different manufacturers of LPG Equipment supplied in the UK. They will all claim to be “the best” system for your car, using the “latest technology”. Only BRC Gas Equipment have the facts and figures to back up their claims and this sets them apart from the rest of the competition A Global Brand BRC is an American owned (M.T.M S.r.l) Italian run company, headquartered in Cherasco, Northern Italy. They are among the world leaders in both the manufacture and marketing of components required for LPG conversions. BRC Gas Equipment are one of the principle companies in the alternative fuel sector with a presence in more than 60 countries, with a market share of approximately 25%. In the UK market, a third of all certified conversions are fitted with BRC. Research & Development Part of BRC’s success can be attributed to their Research and Development work which enables them to design and produce all components in-house. Chosen by Manufacturers Well established alliances with over 20 major vehicle manufacturers are evidence of BRC’s high level of product quality and technology. Dedicated installation centres carry out vehicle conversions. Much of the activity is based in the 24 production lines in Cherasco and Livorno. No Loss in Performance The sophistication and quality of the BRC system results in no noticeable loss in the power and performance of the vehicle. This is showcased by BRC’s participation in motor racing across Europe. Quality & Reliability BRC Gas Equipment is a high performing, advanced, reliable system using components produced to the highest quality standards. All BRC parts are warranted for 2 years, unlimited mileage. Remember, not all quotes are like-for-like, BRC is a premium product and not comparable with budget systems, in the same way that food from a fast food outlet is not comparable with a Michelin star restaurant and a budget DVD player will not support Blu-ray disks. For peace of mind and to maximize your savings choose BRC, chosen by manufacturers. www.birway.co.uk What is Valve Protection? LPG/Autogas has a higher combustion temperature than petrol. The LPG is vaporised before it reaches the engine and therefore loses the natural lubricating effect of a liquid. This dry heat can potentially cause damage to some vehicles with susceptible valve seats in the engine. To compensate this potential issue, a lubrication system can be fitted to the engine to keep the valve seats cool. Some vehicles can adequately cope with the higher combustion temperature, other vehicles may need a small amount of protection or a more full-proof system. So what are the Options? The Manual System The Electronic System The more basic of the 2 options, this system operates by drip feeding lubrication fluid directly into the engine manifold. The lubricant is drawn into the engine by way of vacuum. A more sophisticated and measured way of delivering lubrication fluid to the engine manifold. An ECU calculates the amount of lubricant that is required depending on how much fuel is being delivered to the engine and it is added to the LPG fuel line. This means that the lubricant is mixed into the LPG ensuring that the valve seats are protected. A reservoir is installed in the engine bay and topped up in the same way you would top up the windscreen wiper fluid. A small LED is fitted inside the vehicle to alert the driver when the fluid is low. At Birway, we can advise you if your vehicle requires a valve care system or not and which system will be most suitable. VS BRC (GB) Ltd supply the system from Sl-Elektronik in Germany. As well as having an LED to alert the driver when the fluid is low, a relay can be fitted to automatically change the fuel supply from LPG to petrol, should the reservoir be empty of lubricant. A major benefit of the BRC system is that its injectors are of high quality, enabling the lubrication fluid to be added to the LPG. Topping Up If your vehicle requires a lubrication system, you will need to ensure that the reservoir is topped up. Its as easy as filling up your windscreen wiper fluid. The lubrication fluid “Gaslube” can be purchased in 1 or 5 litre containers from your installer. Alternatively, visit the BRC website www.brcgb.co.uk and click on the Driver Store to order Gaslube online. Only a small amount of lubrication fluid is needed so it will have a very small impact on the huge savings you will make driving on LPG. 01902 631514/609579 info@birway.co.uk www.birway.co.uk Birway Garage Ltd 90 Newhall Street, Willenhall West Midlands WV13 1LQ
