PRESS INFORMATION www.scripttomovie.com The future of filmmaking SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is a web-based software platform combining the creative and logistical processes of filmmaking in one single network. It works across platforms with all major web browsers. It is practice oriented and project specific. In many ways SCRIPTtoMOVIE® represents the future of filmmaking. Developed by highly experienced film professionals and based on the needs of filmmakers in the field, SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is structurally configured like no other film software. Pathways are streamlined, sources of error reduced and time and money are saved. And above all – creativity is enhanced. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is focussed on every individual user and provides a department-specific and intuitive user interface. Those involved in a project can complete their individual work and directly share it, hereby supporting all team members connected to the project. Whether it be film, TV-shows or commercials, SCRIPTtoMOVIE® adapts to the individual needs of any film production, combining the creative and logistical areas of filmmaking. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® transcends borders. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® will be connecting global filmmakers and their projects. From the start it will be available to everybody in German, English, Spanish, French and Italian. The future is „green“. - SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is not only a tool to improve collaboration within a team but also is paving the way towards an entirely paperless film production. No monthly fee! SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is project-oriented. Even the price is project-oriented. The user subscribes individually to access to a specific project. www.scripttomovie.com The software for film professionals Everyone can start a project. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® works best when as many members as possible are connected to a team. However, a project can be prepped by just one person. The owner has special access to import a script and create a production schedule. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® knows the specific role of every user and adapts its user interface automatically to everybody’s individual needs. Users only see pages and areas relevant to their work, but at the same time they profit from others logging in to the same data pool, therefore eliminating tedious transferring of information. Changes in the script or the production schedule are immediately visible to all members with the appropriate clearance. SCRIPTtoMOVIE®’s user interface and menu prompts have been developed in brand new ways. The look is as important as the user friendliness. Members should feel at home quickly and not worry about being prompted to adapt to a brand new way of working. There are ways of scheduling work flow according to scenes, characters, themes or locations. Every piece of information entered will later be available automatically in the summary of daily scheduling. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® records changes automatically. Users can log in to a scene’s protocol at any time which allows them to keep track of all the changes other team members may have made. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® works with an integrated production schedule supporting the daily work flow. Traditionally as Stäbchenplan, horizontally and vertically. It draws data automatically out of all the creative departments. Logistical planning has never been linked as tightly to the creative side. The script and the production schedule are the pillars of SCRIPTtoMOVIE® . However, both retain flexibility and mobility at all time. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® includes a brand new and unique memo system. Creativity is paramount. Every member can contribute ideas by attaching notes or memos. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® collects and sorts these notes so the creator can come back to this section of the script, the character, the scene or the location, wherever the note was attached. Notes can also be sent to individual team members or the members can be invited to a chat regarding a note. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is safe. Our servers are located in Germany and comply with German data security and privacy laws. The owner of a project has the opportunity to guard his script pages with a watermark. With that there’s never a question who generated a report or a page. For the first time watermarks can be applied to all areas of the project, wherever script pages appear as part of a film software. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® makes casting easier thanks to the digital set card. Every director, casting agent or producer can create their own casting-archive and cast actors, extras, stunt people etc. via the integrated platform SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CAST PRO. www.scripttomovie.com SCRIPTtoMOVIE® includes a current catalogue of available equipment. With just a few clicks of the mouse the director of photography, lighting technician, grip or members of other technical departments can create a list of equipment needed and use and share it between projects. There is an option to track your own equipment and combine it with the SCRIPTtoMOVIE®’s catalogue. www.scripttomovie.com Function overview SCRIPT The basis for working with SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is a script, no matter if it’s a first or a final draft. Scripts can be imported very easily. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is scanning all scenes, characters and sets. After importing the script, the user has access to the most important information and statistics like how many characters, sets, night- or day-, exterior- or interior shots there are. However, the script can’t be created or written with SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. That way changes remain detectable and comprehensible. We recommend FINAL DRAFT as your script writing software. But every other word software can be used as long as the creator follows the recommended text format. With commercials, storyboards have to be imported and scenes and shots have to be created manually. PLANNING As soon as a script is accessible through the system, a production schedule can be created with just a few clicks of the mouse. If desired SCRIPTtoMOVIE® will pre-sort the sets. Then the schedule can be worked on in portrait or landscape view. In the end all collected information will appear automatically in the daily shooting schedule. LOCATIONS The allocation of sets within a shooting location will be generated by the the set-configuration function. As soon as you know your location, SCRIPTtoMOVIE® will generate a map via OPEN STREET MAP©. MAP QUEST© is integrated into our software. Travel routes to and from the location can be accessed by all team members automatically. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® will include the current scene schedule within the location. All logistical details like electricity, parking, restrooms, recreation rooms, catering, security etc. can be added and updated. COSTUMES SCRIPTtoMOVIE® supports your project from conception to the final billing. Feel free to go over the script and add some notes. Then start planning which costumes will be worn by what character and create their virtual wardrobe. All clothes can be stored there and can easily be put together as costumes. You can store concept photos and continuation pictures for every character, scene or situation. With SCRIPTtoMOVIE® you will always be aware of your costs for costumes. You can create your costume related calculations, track current spending and stay on top of your budget. www.scripttomovie.com MAKE-UP SCRIPTtoMOVIE® adapts to the size or the organization of your film. Make-up artists can be assigned to each actor directly. They then have a protected space to plan their looks. Should make-up and hair be placed on two or more artists, they can be scheduled and calculated separately per character. PROPS SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is an extensive tool to manage your props. You can plan according to character, location or scene. Calculate and allocate your props, upload photos which can be approved by the decision maker with one click of the mouse. Do your accounting with SCRIPTtoMOVIE® and be always on top of your budget. CASTING You have the opportunity to create and cultivate your own archive of actors, from which you will cast your movies. In addition feel free to use the SCRIPTtoMOVIE CAST PRO casting data-bank of actors, voice-over actors, singers, dancers, models, stunt people or extras. DIGITAL SET CARD - SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CAST PRO / CREW PRO During the casting process it is important for an actor to present themselves clearly and neatly so that the casting department has easy access to data that is important about them. The digital set card stored with SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CAST PRO can be created with only a few mouse clicks. It stores the links to important websites (i.e. demo reel, agency, resume, press clippings, voice reel, fan pages). Uploaded headshots are presented by the horizontal image slider. As long as your links are up-to-date the digital set card doesn’t need up-keeping. It’s a collection of all information about you and it updates automatically. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CREW PRO stores the members of all the other departments and their information is presented in one network, clearly and easily accessible. CONCEPTS Concepts and mood boards can be created for all creative departments. These can be assigned to scenes or characters and allow an overall vision of the project during creative planning. www.scripttomovie.com EQUIPMENT SCRIPTtoMOVIE® creates a catalogue of available shooting equipment and keeps it current. The catalogues are labeled CAMERA, GRIP, LIGHTING and MISCELLANEOUS EQUIPMENT. With only a few mouse-clicks individualized lists can be created, updated and shared. The recipient can add comments, copy, add to and share the list. Additionally, lists for equipment add-ons can be created and added to the scene-list. Since it’s attached to the production schedule you instantly see when and how often you will need a certain add-on. If you own personal equipment you can schedule and take care of it with the help of SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. Lists for customs or insurance purposes can be generated. Help us keep the SCRIPTtoMOVIE® EQUIPMENT CATALOGUE current. NOTES Integrated into SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is a project based communications tool. No matter where you are, with NOTES you can create your own comments and share and discuss them with the other team members. No memo is being lost and the flood of emails can finally be held at bay. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS SCRIPTtoMOVIE® works across platforms. Your work is generated in your browser. Please use the most current versions of Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. In Mac OS X use Safari. We advise strongly to avoid Microsoft Internet Explorer while working with SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. All reports and lists are being generated as PDFs by SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. You will need a PDF reader in order to open them. At this time the SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is not available for use with a touch screen tablet. ASSIGNED ROLES AND RIGHTS A film team consists of unlimited members who work in multiple departments. Every department, even every member of a department, has their own individual job and purpose to fulfill. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® adapts to the individual needs of every member, no matter which role they have within the project. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® adjusts the user interface automatically to the needs of the selected role. Over 80,000 individual rights have been pre-defined. www.scripttomovie.com Interview with the creator „Filmmakers are full of passion for their craft. Nobody I know was forced to make movies. - That’s why I believe we deserve a good software to work with!” Florian Froschmayer, Creator SCRIPTtoMOVIE® YOU ARE A FILMMAKER. WHY DID YOU DEVELOP A SOFTWARE? SCRIPTtoMOVIE® was born out of necessity. No software could handle what I needed for my projects. Not only from a director’s point of view, also from the entire project’s point of view. AND THAT DIDN’T EXIST YET? There is software for the logistical aspects of film production. There are also apps to use for certain departments. But that’s all. Nothing covers all aspects, combines the team in a way that all members can benefit from it. Today, everybody preps on their own und countless lists are being sent around. They all look different and you have to find a way to make them cohesive. That’s very time intensive and susceptible to mistakes. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST HURDLE TO OVERCOME IN DEVELOPMENT? Film making is based on two pillars. The script and the production schedule. Both are independent from each other and yet connected at the same time. Whatever you decide in terms of the script will have consequences sooner or later for the production schedule. Changes to the script or the schedule cost a lot of time for administrative purposes. The biggest challenge during the concept stage of SCRIPTtoMOVIE® was to keep both pillars flexible while connecting them to each other. I believe we’ve succeeded. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® combines the creative with the logistical. WHY HASN’T THIS BEEN THOUGHT OF BEFORE? The difficulty is that so many departments with different needs are colliding, while they all work for the same goal: to make a film as good as it can possibly be. WHAT DID YOU PAY MOST ATTENTION TO IN DEVELOPMENT? Filmmaking is a predominantly creative business with mostly creative people. They often collide with each other. The experience, accessibility and the look of a software are very important to them. A lot of energy and research went into the user interface which is intuitive, but at the same time has to look good. During the intensive prep phases I’ve spent many hours in front of a server. Why not work with a software that makes you feel good, is fun to work with and looks presentable? www.scripttomovie.com DOES SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CHANGE THE WAY FILMMAKERS WORK? SCRIPTtoMOVIE® digitalizes a film team without changing the workflow of a specific department. The past 100 years of filmmaking have proven certain patterns as being useful. I didn’t want to change them. On the contrary. I’ve tried to understand the different needs of every department und develop SCRIPTtoMOVIE® in a way it can be helpful to everyone equally. Of course that took some time for me to familiarize myself with everybody’s process. A database is only as good as the information that it contains. The more meticulous you work, the more you get out of it in the long run. In the first few weeks we’re talking mainly data entry, later that data just needs to be managed and updated. IS SCRIPTtoMOVIE ONLY USEFUL, IF THE WHOLE TEAM WORKS WITH IT? Not at all. With SCRIPTtoMOVIE® you can work on your own. However, the script and production schedule updates will depend just on one person. For that reason SCRIPTtoMOVIE®is more valuable if more team members are involved in the prep with SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. The workload of every team member lessens since everything only needs to be entered once and is available to everybody thereafter. When I assign a scene to props for example, the prop is also visible in scheduling. Nothing needs to be copied and pasted, that happens automatically. The director’s assistant who is in charge of scheduling will only have to decide wether the prop needs to be visible or not. HOW SAFE IS SCRIPTtoMOVIE OR IN OTHER WORDS, HOW IS THE SCRIPT PROTECTED FROM GETTING OUT AND BEING CIRCULATED? We care a lot about the security of people’s intellectual property. The owner of a project can decide if they want to activate a watermark which will appear on every page of the script. Every report that gets generated will be distributed with the name of the team member imprinted as a watermark. For the first time in a film software the watermark is built in to the user interface wherever there’s a script page. That way the distribution of screenshots can be prevented as well. WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION, IS ONE SPECIAL FEATURE THAT SIMPLIFIES FILM PREPARATION THANKS TO SCRIPTtoMOVIE®? Film-prep is constantly changing. It is often hard to pinpoint what has been changed. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® logs changes automatically and states, for example, which props have been removed or what has been renamed. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® doesn’t make your movie better. The people who make the film do that. But SCRIPTtoMOVIE® helps everybody who wants to make a good film to make it better. Filmmakers are full of passion for their craft. I don’t know anybody who was forced to make movies. - That’s why I believe we deserve a good software to work with. www.scripttomovie.com DO YOU BELIEVE SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CAN BECOME STANDARD? Film is always an individual art form, from the conception to its finished product. It’s hard to speak of “standard” here. I would hope that in the future a lot of filmmakers will work with SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. Because, as I said before, with every additional person the value of the content will rise manyfold for already active users. If we succeed to create a large community we will keep improving and optimizing SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. We have many more ideas! IS SCRIPTtoMOVIE® COMPATIBLE WITH OTHER PROGRAMS. OR IN OTHER WORDS, CAN YOU IMPORT PRODUCTION SCHEDULES CREATED WITH AN OTHER SOFTWARE? No, SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is its own, self contained system. With importing and exporting, mistakes can happen and that’s what we want to avoid. There are functions within SCRIPTtoMOVIE® like a full, newly developed shooting schedule which doesn’t exist in this form in any other software. HAS SCRIPTtoMOVIE ALWAYS BEEN PLANNED THIS WAY? SCRIPTtoMOVIE® has certainly changed during the course of its development. From the basic structure to its functions. We’ve quickly realized, once the user interfaces were up, which needs were not met yet. It’s astonishing how quickly you get used to new possibilities and functions and you forget that they weren’t available just a very short time ago. Out of these needs the integrated casting platform SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CAST PRO was developed, which will be a valuable tool for casting departments, once more actors join it. This casting tool is helpful and practically relevant, even if the movie itself won’t be pre-produced with SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® CAST PRO combines a „Best Of“ of features from other casting platforms. It stands on its own but it integrates existing portals which can serve well with the presentation of an artist. IN OTHER WORDS, TEAM MEMBERS WON’T HAVE TO COMMUNICATE PERSONALLY ANYMORE? Not at all. Communication is the most important tool on a movie set. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® creates time which can be used to brainstorm about new ideas. In order to spontaneously place a note we’ve created a internal communication system. On almost every page the notes-module can be found. With it an idea or note can instantly be preserved. A central notes-system collects the notes. With a link you’ll always get back to the place where the idea was generated. Every note can be shared and answered. With this tool the typical flood of emails can be held at bay and at the same time information won’t be lost. While SCRIPTtoMOVIE® automizes many procedures, the notes have to be read and marked manually. That way it’s always clear, who has received and read the note. www.scripttomovie.com WHY ARE YOU LAUNCHING IN FIVE LANGUAGES? Films are made all over the world. Sometimes you shoot in a foreign country with French, Spanish or German speaking teams. With the help of SCRIPTtoMOVIE every team member can access the software in their own language. A common language should be agreed upon for project entries. WHY IS SCRIPTtoMOVIE NOT AVAILABLE FOR TABLETS? Film prep often happens in an office on the big screens. The screen of an iPad would be too small to open a script page and at the same time attach notes. I wouldn’t rule it out however that there will be an iPad version of SCRIPTtoMOVIE® at a later date. A tablet, in my opinion, is primarily a reader. Today it replaces paper. I do use my iPad in conjunction with SCRIPTtoMOVIE®. With SCRIPTtoMOVIE® you can generate over 160 different reports which then will be saved as PDFs. I personally transfer the PDFs onto my iPad and have them and all my info available on set on the day of shooting. I’ve shot my last three movies without one piece of paper! AFTER THE LAUNCH OF SCRIPTtoMOVIE, WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT ARE YOU OFFERING? Our philosophy is to strengthen the collaboration within the team. Of course we will support you in that effort, but our vision is for teams to find support amongst team members. At the launch of the software our user forum will go online, moderated by us. There you can post questions that will either be answered by users or us. The forum will be hosted in German and English. www.scripttomovie.com Florian Froschmayer - Creator ”Faster. Louder. Younger,“ marveled Swiss newspaper BLICK in 1999 about Florian Froschmayers directorial debut EXKLUSIV. At the time the movie accomplished the seemingly impossible a Swiss film became a box office smash. Realized without any public funds, just with the director’s creativity, sponsoring and crowd funding, for which there wasn’t a word yet. It established Froschmayer as a doer and visionary in Switzerland, as well as in his chosen home, Berlin. Froschmayer approaches his newest project with the same verve as he does movies. SCRIPTtoMOVIE is his answer to the daily grind of filmmakers. A web-based platform, connecting the creative, logistic and administrative areas of film work for the first time. Wether it be film, TVshows or commercials, SCRIPTtoMOVIE® adapts to the individual needs of every film production. Forschmayer has been fascinated by computers ever since the early 80s. He created video games with an IBM computer he bought from his math teacher. Later he taught himself how to code HTML in order to design websites that were up to his high standards. Born 1972 in Zurich, Switzerland, Froschmayer started as an actor in several productions of the Züricher Kindertheater. There, at a tender age of 7, the theater’s head teacher Rosmarie Metzenthin identified him as a future director. ”She noticed that I liked telling the other kids what to do,“ remembers Froschmayer. ”Clearly, I only told them when and where they had to stand.“ On December 28, 1985, at the age of 13, a life-altering decision was made. That’s the day he saw Robert Zemeckis’ BACK TO THE FUTURE for the first time. ”When I left the movie theater I knew I was going to be a movie maker. At 13, I knew what I wanted to do with my life.“ Self-made man Froschmayer’s path to becoming a director was not without obstacles. After a business-apprenticeship he quickly got tired of sitting in an office. When Swiss TV was looking for editors he was offered a job by a friend, provided he’d learn the craft in self-study. He quickly quit his job working at a video store in Zurich and started shadowing an experienced editor for a week. Every night, until 7 am, he edited his own pieces and after two weeks he got to cut the first story that aired on TV. He had landed the job. For five years he was editing documentaries, TV-shows and over 1000 news stories until the TV format became too constricting. His first feature film EXKLUSIV sent shockwaves through the Swiss cultural society and media. Never before dared a young director to ignore traditional conventions of Swiss filmmaking, which was almost entirely produced with public funds and money provided by cultural promotion. His innovative style opened new ways of financing Swiss art and made more recent Swiss films like ACHTUNG, FERTIG, CHARLIE!, ERNSTFALL IN HAVANNA, KATZENDIEBE or WHO KILLED JOHNNY possible. The editor in chief of the film department at Swiss TV DRS, Madeleine Hirsiger, praised EXKLUSIV, a crime caper set in the world of news, for its ”wonderful imagery and biting dialog“ and the film was described as ”revolutionary“ by the news magazine FACTS. Despite the enthusiastic reception of EXKLUSIV, Froschmayer couldn’t see his professional future in his homeland. ”There’s no movie business in Switzerland,“ he explains his decision to move to Berlin in 2001. ”I don’t want to make a movie every six years, I want to make six films a year.“ www.scripttomovie.com Success in Berlin Once in Berlin the motivated filmmaker shot several episodes of tv-shows like KÜSTENWACHE and DIE SITTE before he traveled abroad. His second feature film L.A. X. is a road movie about a loner (Martin Rapold) traveling through the American west while looking for himself. With a micro crew of only a camera operator, an actor and a director the film was shot in only 14 days and was one of the first Swiss films shot in digital format. The film website cineman.ch wrote: ”A quiet and reflective movie.“ Back in Berlin Froschmayer got an offer to direct several episodes of the German TV-drama TATORT. Episodes like DER POLIZISTINNENMÖRDER with Eva Mattes as the detective or BOROWSKI UND DIE HEILE WELT with Alex Milberg in the lead were received with much critical praise. TV movies followed, like DIE ROUTE (2009, RTL) or NICHT OHNE MEINEN ENKEL (2013, ARD/ORF) with Thekla Carola Wied and Christian Kohlund in the lead roles. His talent as a filmmaker was described as ”sensitive and without pretense, with a clear focus on the essentials“ by STERN magazin in 2009. It is this focus that has made him direct not only 50 successful feature and TV-movies, it was the motivation for his newest project. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is a software that will streamline a filmmaker’s work process. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® was created on set, out of Froschmayer’s frustration over cumbersome procedures. The sophisticated computer program facilitates the communication between director, production team, cast and crew and eliminates hours of administrative overhead. SCRIPTtoMOVIE® works for all areas of filmmaking, be it shooting a feature film, TV-shows or commercials. ”My goal was to shoot my movies with the best possible software. It would make me very proud if other filmmakers in Europe or overseas were interested in making films with my cool tool as well.“ REGIE FERNSEHEN (Auswahl) 2015 SWEET SEPTEMBER THE NEW LIFE OF INA CRIME SCENE: YOU WILL BE JUDGED 2013 THE LEGEND OF THE MASK 2012 NOT WITHOUT MY GRAND SON THE LAW OF SILENCE 2011 IN MY SISTERS WEDDING DRESS 2010 CRIME SCENE: LET MAN BE A NOBLE CREATURE, AND HEALTHY CRIME SCENE: BOROWSKI AND THE QUESTION OF PURE TASTE 2009 THE ROUTE CRIME SCENE: THE COP KILLER 2008 CRIME SCENE: BOROWSKI AND THE UNTAINED WORLD www.scripttomovie.com SCRIPTtoMOVIE® is a registered trademark, © FF Entertainment GmbH 2013 Operator: FF Entertainment GmbH Gervinusstr. 12 D-10629 Berlin mail@ffentertainment.de Managing Director/CEO: Florian Froschmayer Local Court: Berlin Charlottenburg, HBR 92629 B VAT identification number: DE 234 518 128 Legal advice: HERTIN & Partner PartG mbB Rechts- und Patentanwälte, Berlin, Dr. Sandra Wagner, Dr. Tobias Boeck Publicist: 8EINHALB Johanna Bartsch, Ninja-Katharina Paetow Gleimstraße 39, 10437 Berlin Telefon: +49 30 68 00 10 79 mail: jb@8-einhalb.de oder np@8-einhalb.de Initiator, idea, concept: Florian Froschmayer Programming: CAP & More Solutions GmbH, Berlin Design: ©Florian Froschmayer Project manager: Florian Froschmayer (FF Entertainment GmbH) Patrick Lange (CAP & More Solutions GmbH) Programmers: Denis Strobel, Enrico Berndt Narrator Tutorials: Victoria Sturm, Charles Rettinghaus, John (Ned) Irving Consultants: Patrick-D.
