German Students Eat and Dance at Liederkranz York Suburban Middle School and High School students took part in German Student Day at the Lancaster Liederkranz in Manheim, Lancaster County, on a recent Sunday afternoon. Students were able to taste an authentic German lunch, followed by performances from several choral groups. Then came the dancing! After watching various age groups perform traditional German dances, the students took to the floor and gave it a try themselves. The eighth grade German classes recently took part in a “German Food Experience.” As a culminating activity to their final food unit, students signed up to prepare some of the foods they had learned about. During their lunch period, each student had the opportunity to sample a wide variety of authentically prepared German dishes, and then made room for dessert, which they enjoyed during their German classes later that day. With the addition of a fourth elementary building in 2011-2012, several important changes will occur. First and foremost is the regrouping of grade levels. Valley View and Yorkshire will become primary buildings housing students in grades kindergarten to second grade and East York and Indian Rock will house intermediate level students in third through fifth grades. Students who attend Valley View in grades K to Dr. Kate Orban 2 will attend Indian Rock in grades 3 to 5. K to 2 students at Yorkshire will attend East York as they move to the intermediate level. The addition of the new building will facilitate a more balanced enrollment in the buildings, end the overcrowding (and need for portable classrooms), and educationally the K-2, 3-5 split will be an important instructional piece. In addition, it is anticipated bus transportation will be significantly improved in that attendance zones will be less spread out and fit into a more natural boundaries. In order to accomplish all of the above, the elementary attendance zone boundary was realigned. A Transition Committee first examined seven different possible scenarios for the boundary realignment which will occur during the 2011-2012 school year. Families who will be affected by the selected scenario were contacted earlier this year via letter, followed by personal phone calls to each household and an invitation to a general meeting explaining the proposed change. Information was also posted on the district website. I appreciate the efforts of the Transition Committee, administrators, families, and the school board as they addressed this realignment. Everyone involved felt it important to inform the public well in advance of the change. The district will continue to keep all elementary families posted not only about the boundary realignment but also the Valley View to Yorkshire move, the progress of the Valley View renovations, and the anticipated move to the new grade level structure in 2011-2012. Please contact me with any questions.
