With the World Games in Los Angeles broadcast around the world on ESPN and with more people getting involved here in our state, we are making a great impact in Connecticut, around the nation and around the world. Our athletes continue to demonstrate that they are champions who are changing the world and you are champions for supporting them. Thank you for your most generous support and continued involvement! More than ever, Special Olympics is about inclusion of those with and without intellectual disabilities. Through Special Olympics, people with intellectual disabilities have the same opportunity anyone else would have to be on a sports team, to have a place where they feel respected and included and to have a chance to develop, excel and connect. Because sports are activities that people enjoy and relate to, Special Olympics can foster a more inclusive and respectful society. We consistently hear from volunteers, sponsors, coaches, family members and friends that experiencing just one Special Olympics event – whether a practice, a qualifier or a state competition – can truly open one’s heart and mind about people with intellectual disabilities and the talent and character they possess. We watch hearts open in high school students through our Unified Sports® program, which is offered in over ninety percent of Connecticut’s public high schools and brings people with and without intellectual disabilities together to play sports, enriching the lives of all participants. Amie Pyatt, a student at Simsbury High School, put it best in her essay about participating in Special Olympics: “When we all walk into the gym or onto the field, the differences go away and we come together as a team. Now that I am able to set aside differences in my everyday life as well, it allows me to be a more accepting and patient person. Not only did Unified Sports® improve my junior and senior years of high school, but it also helped me realize that special education is something I want to do with my life.” Special Olympics Connecticut is also striving to improve sports performance by enhancing athletes’ health. Health problems seen in our nation, such as the obesity epidemic, can affect individuals with intellectual disabilities to an even greater degree. According to a Special Olympics International Research and Evaluation Department report, in 2013, 46% of adults with intellectual disabilities in the United States examined by Special Olympics were obese compared to 35.9% in the general population. To address concerns such as this, we’ve expanded our Unified Sports® Fitness Club significantly during the past year, so that more people can enjoy the camaraderie of membership and challenge themselves to stay fit, eat healthy and keep moving. We are also working to improve the well-being of our athletes by giving them more frequent opportunities to receive health screenings, nutritional advice and referrals for care through our Healthy Athletes Program. In 2015, a record 683 athletes were screened for vision, hearing, dental, foot, balance and healthy lifestyle habits. Over 140 athletes received prescription glasses on the spot through our Opening Eyes program. As this Annual Report shows, Special Olympics Connecticut has come a long way since its founding in 1969. In 2015, we served over 13,000 athletes and Unified Sports® partners with the help of over 10,000 volunteers. Along the way, we are changing attitudes and changing minds. None of our work would be possible without each and every one of you. With your help, we look ahead confidently to continued expansion of our services. Thank you for your generosity of heart which allows us to accomplish so much and aim so high. Catherine Kortlandt, Board Chair Beau Doherty, President Our mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. 3 STATEWIDE COMPETITIONS Speed Skating Invitational February 19th Rose Garden Ice Arena, Norwich Colchester Golf Skills Challenge August 9th Tallwood Country Club, Hebron Windham Swim Meet March 14th Windham High School, Windham Croquet Invitational August 15th Elizabeth Park, Hartford Curling Bonspiel March 14th Nutmeg Curling Club, Bridgeport Alternate Shot Golf Invitational August 22nd Orange Hills Country Club, Orange Traditional Basketball Invitational March 14th Holy Cross High School, Chase Collegiate School, Chase Park House, Kennedy High School and Tinker Elementary School, all of Waterbury New England Golf Invitational October 10th Raceway Golf Course, Thompson WINTER GAMES SUMMER GAMES FALL SPORTS FESTIVAL HOLIDAY SPORTS CLASSIC Athletes: 711 Unified Sports® Partners: 158 Coaches: 252 Athletes: 2,007 Unified Sports® Partners: 324 Coaches: 470 Athletes: 919 Unified Sports® Partners: 331 Coaches: 197 Athletes: 1,785 Unified Sports® Partners: 581 Coaches: 240 Cross Country Skiing & Snowshoeing Cycling Bocce Unified Basketball Cycling Time Trials May 17th Eversource Energy, Cheshire Bowling Developmental Aquatics Time Trials May 21st Oxford High School, Oxford Powerlifting Sailing Invitationals June 27th Essex Yacht Club, Essex July 25th Norwalk Yacht Club, Norwalk August 2nd Cedar Point Yacht Club, Westport February 28th and March 1st Eversource Energy, Simsbury Figure Skating & Speed Skating International Skating Center of Connecticut, Simsbury Alpine Skiing & Snowboarding Ski Sundown, New Hartford Floor Hockey Pratt & Whitney, East Hartford June 5th, 6th and 7th Gymnastics September 12th, 13th, 19th and 20th Savin Rock, West Haven Croquet Swimming Ocean House, Watch Hill, Rhode Island Tennis Golf Track & Field Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven Soccer Hamden Hall Athletic Fields, Hamden 4 ADDITIONAL COMPETITIONS Sleeping Giant Golf Course, Hamden November 21st and 22nd Quinnipiac University, Hamden AMF Circle Lanes, East Haven and AMF Lanes, Milford James Hillhouse High School, New Haven Sailing The Wadawanuck Club, Stonington Unified Volleyball Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven Softball Connecticut SportsPlex, North Branford and Kennedy Memorial Field, East Haven Husky Classic Soccer Divisioning Tournament May 2nd UCONN, Storrs Southern Time Trials May 9th Weston High School, Weston Northern Time Trials May 17th The Loomis Chaffee School, Windsor Unified Basketball Divisioning Tournament October 24th Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven Unified Volleyball Divisioning Tournament October 25th Floyd Little Athletic Center, New Haven New England Flag Football Invitational November 15th Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, MA Golf Skills Jamboree July 19th Lyman Orchards, Middlefield Softball Divisioning Tournament August 8th Prageman Park, Wallingford 5 SPECIAL OLYMPICS WORLD GAMES & USA TOURNAMENTS ® UNIFIED SPORTS VO & SEGNULP NIUGNEP 4102 EHT RECLUB EGDEFITNESS Special Olympics World Games & USA Tournaments With 6,500 athletes and 2,000 coaches representing 165 countries, along with 30,000 volunteers and spectators from around the world who attended the Games and watched highlights on ESPN, the Special Olympics World Games was the largest sports and humanitarian event anywhere in the world in 2015. Unified Sports® are played in accordance with formal game rules and with certified referees, although the focus is on collaboration, joy and personal achievement rather than competition. Participants are similar in age and skill level. Divisioning of teams is based on skill level. Sports include basketball, bowling, soccer, track and volleyball. The Unified Sports® program gives participants with intellectual disabilities opportunities to play sports and form friendships with their peers. It helps participants without disabilities overcome misconceptions they may have about people with disabilities. And the program helps all participants gain skills, physical fitness and confidence, and develop life-changing relationships. It also helps to inspire a more positive school climate and an environment where there is acceptance and inclusion for students of all abilities. Since 1992, Special Olympics Connecticut has partnered with the CIAC to inspire students to play unified. Students are encouraged to follow a pathway throughout their education that allows them to participate in Unified Sports® at every grade level. In the earlier grades, the focus is on practicing individual skills and, in the higher grades, teamwork and team sports are emphasized. This pathway can continue after graduation, as Special Olympics Connecticut offers Unified Sports® programs in communities throughout the state for people of all ages. 8 PLAY UNIFIED. Mohegan Sun Resort & Casino hosted its 5th annual Over the Edge event to benefit Special Olympics Connecticut on September 4th. This year’s event was sold out! Before they make the leap into the waters, participants collect donations from those who wish to support their valiant effort - and earn event t-shirts, incentive prizes and awards. Penguin Plunges, held at six locations in different parts of the state, provided a fun, festive and exciting atmosphere for participants and spectators alike and featured music, refreshments, special guests and parades with participants showing off their creative costumes. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Connecticut is an event that happens every June. Over 1,500 law enforcement officers and officials carry a torch lit with the “Flame of Hope” through their community and pass it on to officers in the next town. Departments across the state do this for three consecutive days, across 530 miles, to create a chain of support for Special Olympics and raise awareness of the organization’s mission. On the third day, this annual run culminates during the Special Olympics Connecticut Summer Games Opening Ceremony. Officers complete the Torch Run by making a procession onto Southern Connecticut State University’s Jess Dow Field as athletes and friends cheer them on. An athlete and officer light the ceremonial cauldron with their torch, as is tradition, to help kick off the Games.
