Sermon Series
The Book of Hebrews
“By Faith!”
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1
For the Christian, faith is not just an uncertain hope that “everything will be ok,” it is a sure
and certain hope in what God has done and what God will do! By faith, we believe that Jesus
Christ lived, died and rose again so that we might have eternal life. Join us for a six week sermon series on the Book of Hebrews, which teaches us all about living by faith. Faith is not
optional for the Christian it is a way of life!
Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to Him must believe
that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.

BIBLICAL STEWARDSHIP
A number of good things happen in
the month of October. We will celebrate
LWML Sunday on October 4th, hear about
Lutheran Family Services on October
11th, and on October 25th we will celebrate Reformation Sunday.
In many parts of our country October is also a month for harvesting crops
like corn and soybeans. The Bible in a number of places makes reference
to the rejoicing of God’s people at the time of harvest. Harvest is truly a
good time to remember God’s goodness and mercy and raise our songs of
thanksgiving like:
“Come, ye thankful people, come; raise the song of harvest home.
All be safely gathered in ere the winter storms begin;
God, our maker, doth provide for our wants to be supplied.
Come to God’s own temple, come; raise the song of harvest home.”
Of course, due to drought, hail and other weather issues, some crops are
damaged and this causes hardships for many farmers and their families;
however, overall, seedtime and harvest prevail and the activities of agriculture, commerce and transportation continue so that the earth yields its increase and provides food for all God’s creatures. This is indeed a good
reason for rejoicing.
But our rejoicing over the goodness and mercy of God should not be limited to the times of harvest, whether in the summer or the fall, because Jesus taught us pray: “Give us this day our daily bread.” Dr. Martin Luther
explained the meaning of that petition with these words: “God certainly
gives daily bread to everyone without our prayers, even to all evil people,
but we pray in this petition that God would lead us to realize this and to
receive our daily bread with thanksgiving.”
One of the way we give thanks is through our stewardship of our time, our
talents, and our treasures. Stewardship is at its best when it is thought of
as whole-life, year-round and for all ages. Our definition of Christian
stewardship is the free and joyous activity of the child of God and God’s
family, the church, in managing all of life and life’s resources for God’s
purposes. This definition reminds us of the truth that our stewardship is
not just a matter or money, but also a matter of sharing the good news of
Jesus, using our time and talents for ministry, and taking care of God’s creation and our own bodies, plus so much more. May God help us all
throughout the year to understand that while stewardship is often measured
in dollars and cents it is much more than that—all of life and life’s resources.
“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special
possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” 1 Peter 2:9
This month’s featured book is a new one chosen by one of our young members and purchased
through the Thrivent Action Team “Lovin’ the Library” outing we made to the Family Christian bookstore as a group in August. It is a children’s book (recommended for ages 2-7) called
My Princesses Learn to Be Brave by Stephanie Rische and illustrated by Heather Heyworth.
In My Princesses Learn to Be Brave, friends Grace and Hope want to play on their favorite slide at the park. However, when they get to the slide, they meet a mean bully who won’t let them. As the girls turn to leave, Grace recalls the story of Queen Esther, who bravely stood up for her people. Inspired by Esther’s story, the girls ask the
bully to be their knight and invite him to play with them on the slide.
This book teaches that girls are daughters of the King and boys can be His knights. It encourages us all to live as
God would want us to. The full-color art features adorable, multicultural characters that will be especially appealing to princess fans.
Also newly added to the library is a copy of the photobook that was given to the Hendersons on their last Sunday
with us at Risen Christ. If you are interested in perusing it, look for it in the reference section in the library. We
ask that reference materials remain in the library, unless special arrangements are made.

Kids Against Hunger
Risen Christ, Trinity, Holy Cross and Immanuel Lutheran
Churches are sponsoring a Kids Against Hunger campaign.
Kids Against Hunger is a national organization that sends
food to people overseas. The food that we package for this
event will go to Nicaragua, Haiti, or Honduras. We are collecting money for food; $1.50 will buy supplies for one
package which serves 6 people. This year’s goal is 5,000 packages. On October 17, volunteers are needed to package
this food. Risen Christ has been asked to start working right away at 9:00 am in the Trinity gymnasium. Assembly
lines will be set up to package rice, soy, vitamins and dehydrated veggies. Anyone over age 5 can help, and those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. What can you do? Donations are accepted through October 11, and may be
placed in the offering plate (please write KAH in the memo line). Volunteers may sign up on the sheet on the kiosk
(although you may come without officially signing up). Finally, please pray for this project, as this is a way to follow
God’s command to assist our brother in need. Contact Michelle Warner at 563-349-2078 or warnertmjm@gmail.com
for additional information.

Psalm 106:1
Have you ever heard the term, “mighty mites”? Our gift of mite monies goes a long way
to further the kingdom of God in very tangible ways. Each coin or bill that you place into
that small box helps to support LWML as an organization as well as going out to the
ends of the earth. At the National Convention in Des Moines this past summer, the Mission Goal for Grants for the next two years came to a total of $2,000.000. Wow! The
mission grants cover a broad range of requests for funding from outreach to refugee
camps in Lebanon, to clean water efforts in areas where this most basic need is lacking, to inner city ministry, to training
Pastors and leaders to share the Gospel throughout the world. What a blessing to be a part of this effort…all because of
Christ and what He has done for all people. We are the hands and feet of Jesus, blessed to be a part of this organization
for such a time as this. Mite boxes are available to all members to take home with them and can be found on the Welcome kiosk in the Fellowship Hall. Return the box to church once filled. Talk to Patty Thomas if you have questions.
Here in our own congregation, we are blessed with leadership of our society by very dedicated women. Thanks again to
Patty and Sharon for their service over the past couple of years. We welcome Cindy Stanfield aboard as Vice President
and Patty Thomas to a second term as President. Take time to get to know these ladies and encourage them through your
words and prayers.
October 4 is LWML Sunday at Risen Christ. It will be a time to pause and thank God for the work of this national organization. There will be special music during the worship services as well as a blessing upon the items we send for aid
through Lutheran World Relief. Your generous donations are greatly appreciated!
Mark Monday, October 19, on your calendar as we will be having a “Quilting Extravaganza” in the Fellowship Hall at
6:30P. The need for quilts continues to rise; especially with the recent refugees fleeing from Syria. Come and join us for
an evening of fellowship as we work to offer assistance to these individuals who have fled their homes. No sewing experience needed! There are a wide variety of tasks that are needed in this endeavor.
Gentle, individually wrapped soap continues to be a need in baby care kits and health kits. If you are able to donate
soap, it can be placed in the bin in the coatroom. Thank you.
Continue to lift the leaders of our Synod and District in prayer as well as Pastor Larson. Pray for missionaries throughout the world as they tirelessly share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with the people in the area of their assignments.

Little Blessings – “Proclaiming the good news of salvation through Jesus
Christ to children and their parents through a high quality child care program.”
October 13th the children will be adventuring out to the Wapsi Pumpkin Patch. While on the tour the children will get a hayrack ride around the farm. A movie will be shown on how a pumpkin starts from a seed
and grows big and round. While at the pumpkin patch, the children will be visiting the petting zoo. Each
child comes home with a pumpkin.
During October the children will be learning that all the children understand that God has made them for a
purpose and loves them just as they are. Next they will talk about nighttime and Jacob’s dream of blessings. Nighttime includes nocturnal animals, how light affects the darkness, time, heavenly bodies and
bedtime routines. After darkness and Jacob’s dream, the children will talk about opposites and Jacob
and Esau, some twins who were completely different. The last week of October, the children will talk
about Jackets and Joseph’s coat of many colors and how Joseph’s father only gave one of his twelve
sons a special coat or jacket.
The center is required to have an open house once a year. Usually our open house is during Trunk or
Treating, so the daycare is working on having a Halloween theme for our open house. Our open house
will consist of a meal for families and fun times for the children. If any church members would like to join
in and help, please let us know.
The daycare board has been very busy updating employee and parent handbooks the last year. We are
finally to the finishing stages of this project. Thanks to all board members for putting the time in to finish
this project.
The center will be having a couple openings on our board starting this January. We are in need of a couple adults that would like to get involved with the center. Must be able to commit 1 ½ hours on the second Thursday of each month. Our meetings start at 6:00pm and are always finished by 7:30pm. If interested, please talk to me or Pastor Larson for more details.

Last Wednesday service 9/16/15
Once a year, the financial personnel along with the staff and boards assemble a spending plan for the upcoming
year. It’s that time once again, so we are hard at work planning for the ministries of Risen Christ for next year.
The preliminary plan will be presented to Church Council at its October meeting, and the entire Voters’ Assembly
will vote on the spending plan in October. The church staff, elders, and board leaders are considering how best to
use the resources given to the church in the Glory of God.
We are truly blessed with the faithful service our church staff, board chairmen and officers, committee members,
and volunteers provide. We honor and praise God when we contribute to the work of the church, which enables
everyone to spread the Good News of the Gospel. Risen Christ has been blessed this year with continued strong
offerings (see the statistics above). We give thanks to God for our members who provide the resources so that our
church staff, leaders, and volunteers - all of us – to spread of message of salvation through Christ Jesus.
Lift ev’ry voice and sing Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty.
Let our rejoicing rise High as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;
Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun Of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
Respectfully Submitted,
Michelle Warner
Treasurer
God of our weary years, God of our silent tear,
Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;
Thou who hast by Thy might Led us into the light,
Keep us forever in the path, we pray
Lest our fee stray from the places, our God,where we met Thee;
Lest, our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee;
Shadowed beneath Thy hand, May we forever stand,
True to our God, true to our native land.
