A MESSAGE
FROM
Dearly Beloved,
It is with great joy that I share the good news that our
fellow parishioner, Mr. Demetrios Wilson, who
resides in San Pedro with his wife Linda, will be
returning to Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of
Theology to complete his Master of Divinity degree.
Demetrios took a leave of absence from his studies
with only one semester left, in order to assist
his late Mother, and long- time steward of
St. Katherine, Mrs. Despina Wilson, as
she was very ill prior to her falling
asleep in the Lord on November
27, 2014. May her memory be
eternal!
Seminarian Demetrios plans on
returning to Holy Cross for the
Spring semester in January 2016
with the goal to graduate in May
2016. A Physical Therapist by
profession, Demetrios, who
works at UCLA Hospital, plans
on returning to his career as a
Physical Therapist in Los Angeles
after graduation. Presently, he is
teaching Bible Study at St. Katherine,
which has been a blessing to me as I am
unavailable to teach Bible study due to my time being
given to the Planning and Capital Campaign
Committee meetings as we continue our construction
project. I have heard wonderful reviews regarding
Mr. Wilson’s classroom presentation and knowledge
of the Holy Scriptures that he shares freely as a
volunteer.
Upon his return to St. Katherine after his graduation
in May 2016, in addition to continuing his
professional life as a Physical Therapist, Demetrios
has expressed to me his desire to continue to teach

Bible Study for our parish, and to revive the outreach
ministry to young adults. This will be a great blessing
for me, as we plan to move into Phase III of the
building plan in 2016, and a blessing to our
parishioners as well, who will benefit from Demetrios’
ministry. Indeed, we are doubly blessed as his wife
Linda (who will remain here while Demetrios is away
for his last semester due to financial constraints) has
completed her Master of Theological Studies
at Holy Cross, and will continue to offer
her services as a volunteer religious
educator to our parish.
This undertaking will require
more financial resources than are
currently available to Demetrios
and Linda. Our parish has
always come forward to assist
missionaries
from
our
community called to serve in
Africa, Eastern Europe, and
Alaska.

FOUNDATION NEWS
ANGELO REVELS
We can happily say that it has been a very exciting and blessed year for the Foundation and our Church. Our dream
for supporting our beloved St. Katherine Church in another very important area has become a reality. We have
already established a very successful Scholarship Program to aid the young men and women of our parish in their
academic pursuits by establishing endowments and by the participation of our community in the Thanksgiving Benefit
Drawing.
Our wishes to do more have been answered. Our dear Neko Colevins, of blessed memory, named the Foundation as
the beneficiary of most of his estate and we are deeply grateful and humbled with his decision. He had expressed great
trust in the Foundation to do what would be most beneficial towards his commitment and love of the Church. As
most of you witnessed on a Sunday after the Divine Liturgy, a check of ONE MILLION DOLLARS was given to the
Capital Campaign Committee represented by Chairman, George Mitsanas and Executive Assistant, Ellen Papadakis
by me, Angelo Revels, President of the Foundation. Neko’s love for the kitchen and the youth was well known. A
decision to name the kitchen in his memory was most appropriate and will be named the “NEKO COLEVINS
KOUZINA.” May his memory be eternal.
We welcome to meet with anyone interested in learning more about what the Foundation has to offer our Church
and how your donations will be used wisely and according to your wishes. No question or donation is too small. We
welcome your participation.
A reminder: November 22 is the date for the “Thanksgiving Benefit Drawing” benefiting the parish youth who are
college bound. Everyone is a winner in more ways than one! Thank you once again for helping to make this ministry
a real success.

STEWARDSHIP
ROZ HALIKIS
As we approach the last two months of 2015, we reflect on this past year and all that we have accomplished. Not only
in terms of stewardship but also in the love and camaraderie developed by all of us working together for a common
goal. We have been blessed with many material gifts but more importantly, we have worked together with love and
respect for each other.
Our festival was the best ever on record, the renovated campus is finally becoming a reality, our Sunday School has
175 students enrolled with 29 teachers as volunteers, our Greek dance, our Greek School, our devoted Philoptochos,
our wonderful Senior group, our Youth, AHEPA & DOP, our many volunteers, all the effective committees and too
many more to mention have helped in all this success under the leadership of Fr. Michael, Deacon Cary and of course,
our dedicated office manager, Tom Bouras. Despite overcoming some of our differences we have shown true
stewardship in our Lord’s House by working together with love and devotion. This is TRUE stewardship! AXIOI !!!
Many thanks to Ana Papadakis, Andrea Ballas, and Carolyn Crossley for developing and presenting the Youth
Stewardship Pledge Cards to our young people. We hope to give our young people an awareness on the importance of
pledging a commitment of time and talent to their Church.
We once again would like to emphasize the importance of turning in a pledge card as all churches require. It is
necessary that it be on file before you can participate and vote at the Parish Assemblies. We thank those of you who
have donated without submitting a pledge card, but would still like see you play an important part in the decision
making at our assemblies.
Our spotlighted stewards for the Nov/Dec period will be Irene Crossley and Phil Rausch. The Stewardship Committee
is grateful and honored to spotlight these dedicated stewards of St. Katherine. AXIOI !
More good news towards our 2015 goal of $480,000; as of October 27 we have received 409 pledges. The total
amount pledged is $439,052. We have also received $11,398 from donors who have not filled out a pledge card.

On the November agenda we will be voting on a 2016
& 2017 Senior Citizen board. After being installed the
new board will taking over on January 12, 2016.
Anyone, male or female over 50 who is young at heart
and wants to have fun should join the St. Katherine
Senior Citizens. We have 94 members. It’s time to pay
your dues for 2016, which are only $15/year starting in
January 2016. Meetings start at 10:30A.M. the second
Tuesday of each month. We serve lunch at each
meeting (with a few exceptions) for $5. We meet in the
Fotion Fellowship Hall. Please join us and enjoy.

As we approach Thanksgiving in our homes and in our hearts our Parish community has plenty to be thankful for. St.
Katherine’s kitchen is under construction and will soon be ready for equipment installation. Help to fill it with the
necessary tools to serve our church activities and ministries for the next 50 years. The time to become a part of the
Kouzina Honor Roll is now.
Our new kitchen will double in size and include the

On behalf of Saint Katherine Philoptochos, I wish our Saint Katherine community a blessed Thanksgiving and
Christmas.
November 1 we commemorate the feast day of the Unmercenaries, Saints Cosmas and Damianos, patron saints of
Philoptochos. In their honor, on Sunday, November 1, Philoptochos will pass a tray to benefit the philanthropic
programs and charities of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
On November 7, the Metropolis of San Francisco will celebrate the 10 year Anniversary of His Eminence
Metropolitan Gerasimos with Vespers and a Dinner at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Belmont, California.
Tickets are $75 per person and everyone is invited.
The Metropolis of San Francisco Philoptochos invites everyone to the annual “Light the Path” Christmas Luncheon
hosted by St. John the Baptist Church in Anaheim. This is a wonderful way to begin the Christmas season and
support the Bishop Anthony/Philoptochos Student Aid Endowment Fund which provides financial assistance to

Friday evening, December 4, 2015 everyone is invited to a concert by the Citrus College Singers at Assumption of the
Blessed Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church in Long Beach. The event is hosted by all of the Southern California
Philoptochos chapters and all proceeds will benefit the rebuilding of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and the
National Shrine at the World Trade Center in New York. Watch for more information.
We will again be participating in a Christmas project collecting toys for local youth. Watch for more information.
During this season of Thanksgiving we reflect on all that we have to be thankful for. In recent months, thanks go to:
everyone who participated in our Blessing of the Animals in October and to chairs Mary Beth Riblett and Georgene
Mitsanas who baked and packaged the dog biscuits; our St. Katherine parish for continuing to support our on-going
community outreach project to benefit local food banks; your support for our collection to benefit Holy Cross School
of Theology; Mary Pruitt & Linda Bhatia for representing us at the Metropolis Philoptochos Fall Spiritual
Conference, all of the prosforo bakers, and our coffee hour hostesses. We also thank all of you for your patience
during our “outdoor” coffee hours. Special thanks to our 2015 Philoptochos members. We sincerely appreciate your
participation and support.
The date for Vasilopita Sunday will be determined soon! Please watch your bulletins for the specific date. We invite
parishioners to bring a vasilopita to share with our community. Drop it off in the Narthex with a parish council
member and the vasilopites will be blessed in church. Then Fr. Michael will cut one vasilopita with a piece for each of
our parish organizations. Come see who will receive the blessed coin.
Looking back, on Saturday, October 3 we had our annual Blessing of the Animals. It was a very festive event and
much fun was had by all in attendance. We hope you will join us next year!

A TIME-LINE

By now we hope you have had a change to meet your children’s Sunday School teachers, visited their rooms and seen
their curriculum. If you haven’t please do! There is a lot of spiritual work happening at St. Katherine and your kids
are great! I have had the chance to step in as a substitute and I was so impressed with the children’s perspectives on
their faith.
As we move into the next two months there are some important dates to be aware of:
November 1 – Set your clocks back!
November 29 – Turkey and football but NO Sunday School (Happy Thanksgiving!)
December 20 – Christmas Program so NO Sunday School.
December 27 – Christmas Weekend so NO Sunday School.
As a reminder, the Sunday School office also doubles as our library, not just for the teachers and students, but for
everyone at St. Katherine. Please come in and browse and borrow a book. Be a student yourself of your faith while
the kids are growing in theirs in Sunday School. If there is a book that you think we really need to have let us know!!

YOUTH MUSIC MINISTRY
KATHRYN RAMSEYER NOEL
The minis are making mighty music! With the addition of older members and some changing voices, we now have a
bass section, praise the Lord! Our twenty-five-member group continues to work on harmony and challenge itself with
new hymns and arrangements. They are a wonderful, lively, funny bunch in rehearsal, and a focused, reverent choir
on Sundays in the loft. I’m very blessed to be their leader.
In the month of October, they sang the liturgy beautifully and are preparing to do so again on November 22, before
gearing up for the Christmas program on December 20.
All interested children are welcome. I’ve increased our rehearsal time by adding Sunday mornings (from 9:15–
10:00am) to the usual Tuesday evenings from 6–7pm. Please feel free to contact me at Katwinki@aol.com for any

Greek Dance is well on its way for the 2015-2016 year. There is still time to join if you are interested in learning
Greek Dance; ages 4-20. The dance school is blessed to have great directors, families, and dancers. A big thank you to
our directors: Anna Marie Sylvia, Christina Goergen, Teresa Hane, Taylor Hane, Eleni Giagos, Angelena Psaras and
Harrison Dulgarian for all the hard work they dedicate to working with our youth. A warm welcome to our two new
board members: Maria Tsiboukas and Georgia Duvernet. A big thank you to Nicole Carroll and Pete Georgopoulos,
our current board, for all the hard work they put in throughout the year.
Please come out to our annual Bake Sale; Sunday, December 14th in Fotion Fellowship Hall during coffee hour. We
will have a wide variety of home baked goods just in time for the holidays! Opa!!

On October 2 Father Michael began our meeting by reading and discussing a passage from the book of the Bible,
“Genesis.” Later we verified the board that was sworn in on Youth Sunday. Then we proceeded to speak about the
various board positions. Our board members include co-presidents: Athena Booras, Christina Georgen,
Stella Gianoukakis, and Ghattas Malki; vice-presidents Namie Fotion and Panos Makrygiannis; vice-presidents of
communications: Billie Gianoukakis, Valentina Tragus, and Styliani Tragus; vice-presidents of hospitality:
Stacy Manos, Harrison Mitsanas, and Riley Symans; and lastly vice-presidents of social media Harrison Dulgarian and
Lauren Pierson.

After discussing the next Sr. GOYA event (rock-climbing on November 6) we went to Alta Vista Park and played
“capture the flag.” Christopher led his team to a successful victory. The evening ended with much laughter and a
sense of excitement for the month of November.

CHRISSY MEISTERHEIM
We are excited for another fun year with our newborn-3 year olds at Budding Angels!
The beautiful thing about our group is the focus on early bonding and new
friendships.
Some of our parents have been lifelong St. Katherine members, others are new
families. It's so important to build new bonds while strengthening ones we
already have. The little ones benefit from learning how to be in social settings,
and starting their own life-long friendships.
We started off our 2015/2016 year with a play group at Ernie Howlett Park. On
October 21, we went to Cottone and Sons Pumpkin patch. This is an annual
tradition. Stay tuned for more fun outings. Please call with any questions.

GREEK LANGUAGE SCHOOL
MARIA POLYCARPOU POLSON
St. Katherine Greek Language School is off to a great start. We have 66 students enrolled this school year and 9
classes! We are also extremely excited and thankful to have a new teacher join our school. Sophia Schmidt and her
husband Chris moved to the south bay this past summer from Austin, TX. She is fluent in Greek and Spanish, has
taught Greek school in Houston and she is teaching two of our classes.
In our popular Greek with Music for Mommy and Me class, we are having way too much fun singing Greek songs,
using musical instruments and scarves for movement, while learning lots of vocabulary. We have two classes for our
younger students, Kavourakia for 3-4 year olds and Asteries 4-5 year olds. In these classes children are very busy
learning and tracing the alphabet, learning colors, animals, vocabulary, songs, all through crafts and hands on
activities. In our upper level classes, we are focusing on conversation, spelling, grammar and syntax.
On October 23rd and 24th, our students watched a presentation on October 28th 1940, also know in Greek as “OXI
Day!” The presentation was both in Greek and English and afterwards the students had a discussion about these
historic events in class and then got to make lots of crafts related to “OXI Day.”
Fun events for November and December are crafts and education worksheets for the olive harvest, which takes place
all over Greece and Cyprus during the month of November. The students will also learn about the importance of the
olive tree, olives and olive oil in our Greek culture, from archeology to present day. Last day of classes before Christmas
break are Friday December 18th and Saturday December 19th. Our Christmas party will be held on the last day of classes.
Starting this school year, we also have added a new upper level class for our most advanced students. The class is
designed to prepare students for the first two levels, A1 and A2 of the Certificate of Attainment in Greek. Established
in 1998 by the Greek Ministry of Education, it is the only certificate that officially recognizes ones knowledge of Greek
as a second language. There are six levels and the first two correspond to two years of foreign language instruction at
the college level. The students are tested on reading comprehension, grammar, syntax, spelling and verbal
development.
Regardless of whether our students decide to take the exam or not, we have made this certificate our new goal for
Greek school. Reaching that level will be what we will work towards starting with our youngest Pre-K classes. For
example, verbal development will be our first task starting with the younger students. That is the ability to describe
what you see, for example a picture in a storybook. To do that, you need vocabulary and the ability to form a correct
sentence, thus knowledge of grammar and syntax in the verbal form. Then as the students are older, they will need to
write a paragraph to describe what they see and that will be spelling and more syntax and grammar. Answering
questions to a story they hear will be their reading comprehension and listening skills and it will have similar
development. At the younger levels, they will need vocabulary and syntax to talk about it and then to write the
answers, they will need more syntax, grammar and spelling.
We are very proud of all the work our students and teachers have put into our school and for all the work the parents
do at home and for supporting our school in so many ways. Looking forward, we believe that when you raise the bar,
children will reach for it. We are excited about our new goals, it will be more work for everyone but we know we are
on the correct path. Our number one priority is always for the children to love coming to Greek school and feel
proud learning about their rich Greek heritage, culture and history.
