2015 Calendars have arrived!
The theme of our 2015 calendar is
‘hooghan’. The calendar shows different styles of hogans in diné bizaad
(Navajo Language). From ßAãch’î’
‘adeez’á to hooghan dah
diitã’iní you’ll find photos for each
one, and pictures of the construction
of a hoghan in St. Michaels in 1905.
It also includes a Chief Hoghan Song
from Blessingway, and explains how
the different poles for the interlocked
forked pole hoghan are erected and
named.
In a word, the Hoghan spells a long
life of happiness - Sà’ ah Nagháí
Bik’eh Hózhóón. The poster is 18 x
24 inches, and months are written in
Diné bizaad.

These books are only available from Native Child
Native Child is republishing the first ever written and illustrated bilingual readers. For the first time since the 1940s, these booklets are
made available again to the schools in their original bilingual version, illustrated by leading Navajo artists of the twentieth century. Some
are also collected and translated by Robert Young and William Morgan. These bilingual picture books are too beautiful and too historically significant to be forgotten – they describe and illustrate traditional Navajo ways that have been slowly disappearing in the last 65
years, since they were first printed at Phoenix Indian School.

Bilingual Books Published by Native Child
We have republished the bilingual Navajo Historical Series (originally published by the US Indian Service in the fifties). They were created with the help of Robert W. Young and William Morgan. The stories given by the Diné people are told in their own words – they were
originally collected in Navajo and then translated into English.

Bilingual: Navajo/English
Bilingual: Navajo/English: The selected articles were published in Navajo in a monthly newspaper: Ádahooníłígíí. The
newspaper was printed on a single folded sheet of newsprint and distributed from 1943 to 1957 throughout the Reservation
and was a predecessor of the contemporary Navajo Times. Ádahooníłígíí was published by the Navajo Agency of the Bureau
of Indian Affairs in Window Rock, Arizona and contributed to the standardization of Navajo orthography. The only widely
available texts intended for a Navajo audience up to that point had been religious publications and parts of Diyin God Bizaad
– the Bible. The paper was edited by Robert W. Young and William Morgan, Sr. whose task it was to create a simplified Navajo
alphabet with Roman letters found on an English typewriter keyboard. They write in the introduction: “We have endeavored
to select the best of these historical accounts, to publish them bilingually in the present volume, and it is our hope that they
may be of interest to all persons and students of Navajo history.” We find stories about the traditional Navajo country–about
the Four Sacred Mountains and how the clans were created, as well as a story about Navajo scouts on the trail of Geronimo.
Articles about the livestock reduction period and the resulting economic and social disaster and the long range 10 year rehabilitation program after World War II are also included. Perfect for teaching advanced Navajo language class.
Many books have been published about The Long Walk and forced internment at Fort Sumner. In
some publications, the authors might not have researched the original material. This publication
presents firsthand accounts documented at the time, so readers can make up their own mind and
draw their own conclusions.
updated Navajo Treaty of 1868
The past comes alive in the pages of this book, and provides a resource for the teacher and student
alike that leads to a better understanding of a very painful history. The book draws its content mostly
from primary material (i.e. historical letters between Carson and Carleton) and collects it all in one
publication. It is based on years of research, and gives access to a surprising amount of historical
resources, that never before have been documented in one publication.
It is put together to be the perfect book for your Navjo history class in High School or College. An
extended bibliograpy gives access to online resources that let you explore source material even further.
updated and expanded edition now also includes:

Meet the Navajo Code Talkers--young men from
government-run reservations called upon to fight for
the nation that had killed many of their grandparents. First-person accounts relate how a handful of
WWII marines devised the only unbreakable code in
modern military history which remained classified
until the Vietnam War’s end.
Exploring the personal and heartfelt story of the
Navajo Code Talkers, this program tells the stories
of the young Navajo men recruited from harsh
government boarding schools into the Marines
during World War II. From 1942-1945, the Code
Talkers devised an unbreakable code in their
native language and transmitted vital messages in
the midst of combat against the Japanese.
Sheep is life: Story of he Navajo-Churro sheep which is
the original domestic breed that sustained the Navajo, Pueblo
and Hispanic people for nearly 400 years. On the verge of
extinction a generation ago, the Navajo-Churro is making
a comeback. Used for both wool and as a source of lean,
healthy meat. the Churro is a desert animal that can take
care of itself; is more drought-tolerant; has a higher lambing
rate; has healthier lean meat; can produce two wool crops a
year; and that the wool is easier to use and more durable.

Blackhorse Mitchell : “The Creation Of Traditional
Navajo Pottery. It shows how our pottery is made—
the clay that is used, how it is molded and finally
how it is fired using traditional fuels. The DVD
is geared towards first–time makers of Native
pottery and also includes some explanation of
traditional Navajo symbols. The film is in Navajo
with English subtitles narrating the lessons. “

A word about the Navajo Language...
Navajo is a very old language, yet it only has been written down in recent times. The Native speaker is confronted with some problems: not
only does the language vary from area to area, it also differs according to the time it was first written down, i.e., old Navajo and new Navajo.
The vocabulary of each unit has been edited by several Native speakers. The following dictionairies have been consulted for the Diné spelling:
•
•
•
•
•
•
The Navajo Language, Young and Morgan
The English-Navajo Children’s Picture Dictionairy, Navajo Community College Press
Diné Bizaad, Irvy W. Goossen
Conversational Navajo Dictionary, Garth A. Wilson
English/Navajo The New Oxford Picture Dictionairy, Marvin Yellowhair
Saad Ahaah Sinil, Rough Rock Demonstration School
In case of conflicting spellings the revised edition of The Navajo Language by Young and Morgan has been taken as the overiding reference.
