Built around an economy of drum construction and sales, the village of Okurase is a welcoming community pulling itself out of poverty through a comprehensive community development initiative. School groups get to support these efforts through a variety of projects including farming, construction, infrastructure improvement, education and more. Students also get to experience the rich artistic traditions of Ghana through a variety of drumming and dancing activities and hands-on art projects. Come experience the sights and sounds of Ghana! Day 1 & 2 : Arrive in Accra Kokrobite Upon arrival meet your SAGE Global Facilitator and get a good night’s rest. Day 3: Orientation / Walk Along the Beach / Transfer to Okurase Okurase Board your bus to Okurase. Arrive in the early evening and settle into your new community and enjoy a traditional Ghanaian dinner cooked by village women. Day 4: Community Tour / School Service / African Drumming Okurase Help with classroom lesson plans in the village schools and interact with the students. Afterwards, enjoy a hands-on African drumming workshop. Days 5: Option #1: Global Engagement / Option #2: Leadership Option #1: Help build the Art and Skills Training Center and work in the garden. Okurase Option #2: Volunteer in the primary school supporting classroom activities. Day 6: Continue with Community Development Okurase Spend the day in teams helping to construct the Art and Skills Training Center and working in the community garden. Also, learn about food security and sustainability. Day 7: Option #1: Global Engagement / Option #2: Leadership Okurase Option #1: Build the Art and Skills Train- Option #2: Support, training, and upkeep at ing Center and work in the garden. the village electronic classroom. Local Knowledge & Professional Support SAGE employs experienced trip facilitators and local in-country guides providing in-depth knowledge of the culture and natural environment along with professional health, safety, evacuation, and support services. Day 8: Village Departure / Transfer to Cape Coast / Slave Castles Cape Coast Say goodbye to the village and arrive in Cape Coast. Tour the historic slave trading castles that were the departure point for many ships bound for the new world. Day 9: Museum visit / Bus back to Kokrobite Kokrobite Transfer by bus back to the beachfront lodging at Kokrobite where you spent your first night and reflect on your time in Ghana. Day 10 & 11: Nkrumah Memorial / Accra Arts Center / Depart In Flight Visit the Nkrumah Memorial Monument in Accra followed by the Accra Arts Center. Do a little souvenir shopping at the Accra Market before dinner. Say goodbye to Accra and return home inspired by your time in Ghana!
