Randy Vogel Spans the Decades WHEN ADMISSIONS DIRECTOR RANDY VOGEL JOINED SERRA 40 YEARS AGO, Ronald Reagan was Governor of California. A first-class letter could be mailed for six cents. ESPN did not exist. Thirty percent of the current faculty was not even born yet. Randy has witnessed many changes. He has seen more than 7,600 students graduate from Serra. He has worked for five principals and with more than 325 faculty members. He also has watched enrollment grow from a low of 693 students in 1974 to a high of 1019 students in 2007. “I have had the opportunity to work with some amazing faculty and staff members,” he said. “Long time Serra faculty members Ken Houle, Jim Monahan and the late Larry Hennes were among those men who offered me guidance during my early years at Serra. They helped me to understand the special significance of being a teacher in a Catholic high school. I believe in Catholic education. We can teach values, not be afraid to pray and recognize the impact of God in our lives without criticism.” “The students and families that I have met over the years are truly wonderful,” he added. “So many alumni and their families still keep in touch with me. It is so gratifying to get that unexpected visit, call, email or note just checking in after so many years. At Serra, bonds are formed among students, parents and faculty that last forever.” “If you add up the Serra concerts, plays and games Randy has attended, teams he’s coached, students he’s taught and clubs he’s moderated, he stands alone in terms of involvement,” said Scott Delucchi ‘85. “I’d put him in a class of four or five people 2 A R O U N D T H E HA L L S • Randy Vogel Celebrates 40 Years (including Father Zoph) who have meant the most to Serra since the doors opened in 1944.” During the past 40 years, there have been significant changes in society that have affected students and teachers. “The greatest change has been technology,” Randy noted. “Our students would be amazed to go back 40 years in time. Cell phones, email, digital watches, DVDs, IPods, the Internet, Bluetooth—even personal computers were just a dream. I can clearly remember using a hand crank adding machine to add up report card grades. There were no computers. Typing was a required subject. Tests and worksheets were run on dittos and mimeographs.” teach an honors algebra class, which he calls “the highlight of my day.” “I loved coaching freshman baseball for 12 years, both as a head coach and later as an assistant,” Randy said. We were fortunate to win nine WCAL freshman championships. I also have had the privilege of working with my best friend, Bruce Anthony. We met in high school. His support for me, the school and the admissions program has been invaluable.” Randy has taught many fathers and sons. “In 1995, I remember having Keith Rauenbuehler in my algebra class 24 years after I taught his father, Dave,” Randy remembered. “At that time I thought, ‘I sure have been here a long time!’ Other father/son combinations have included the Dooley, Dunleavy, Healy, Grosey, Berriatua, Raffaelli and Dunn families. That’s a pretty extraordinary feeling!” The modern Serra student has changed as well. “Our students today need encouragement, someone to talk to and someone to listen,” Randy said. “They need structure and standards to guide their decisions. We as teachers, especially in a Catholic school, are in a unique position to serve as role models, instill values and offer guidance. We have a tremendous effect on the growth of our students.” Local Roots Over the years, Randy has worn many hats. In addition to being the school’s Admissions Director, he has served as Public Relations Director, Development Director, Math Department Chair, Counselor, Mothers’ Club Moderator, Baseball Coach, Trivia Club Moderator, Photo Club Moderator, Yearbook Moderator and Rally Committee Moderator. He continues to When he is not working, Randy enjoys spending time with his brother, Scott, sister in law, Irene, and three nephews— Kenny, Jeffrey and Steven. His parents, Rita and Warren, reside in Menlo Park and have been married for 66 years. Randy was born in San Francisco but has lived in San Carlos all his life. He graduated from San Carlos High School in 1966 and served as senior class vice president. After graduating from Santa Clara University in 1970, Randy began teaching at Serra as a full-time math teacher. He was only 21—just four years older than most of his seniors. “Although we are a small family, the eight of us are extremely close,” Randy said. “My mom and dad always instilled in me values and a strong work ethic. I have admired my dad for always doing the right thing; for his strong character. My mom is a loving, compassionate and caring person who is happiest when those around her are happy. They are the most loving and giving parents anyone could ask for.” Randy is a huge Giants fan and remembers sneaking a transistor radio in class when he was in high school to listen to the Giants-Yankees World Series games. He also follows the 49ers and Sharks. In addition to sports, Randy loves to travel. So far, he has visited 47 of 50 states, all but four major league ballparks and several foreign countries. As for the future, Randy looks forward to the next decade. “I hope that my passion for Serra encourages prospective students to become a part of the Serra experience and embrace all that we have to offer,” he said. “Serra is at the top of its game. When I talk to prospective students and their families about coming to Serra, I present the four As – academics, athletics, activities and the arts – all under the umbrella of Campus Ministry and service to others. This, combined with the spirit of our community, makes Serra an exceptional and unique place. Simply put, Serra has always felt like home. The school’s spirit and sense of community is like nothing else I have known.” Career Day Alumnus Peter Barsocchini ’70 delivers message of inspiration and success Faith in Action Summer Immersion Program Has Heart Most teenagers spend the summer relaxing at the beach, working a part-time job and playing summer sports under sunny skies. Yet summer had a different spin this year for a group of 14 community-minded Padres who participated in the Summer Immersion Program. Sponsored by the Campus Ministry Department, the two-week program offered volunteer trips to Jamaica and New Orleans. Teens spent two weeks under the hot sun painting houses, nailing new floors, clearing yards and caring for orphans. The work was grueling, gritty and surprisingly satisfying. Caribbean Soul “Magical” describes the transformation five students experienced in Montego Bay June 6-19. Students lived inside Blessed Assurance orphanage and spent two weeks tending to orphans with severe mental and physical disabilities. The trip was led by Summer Immersion Program Coordinator Patrick Cody and biology teacher Kim Bohnert. Campus Ministry Director Kyle Lierk joined the group during the second week before leading his own trip to New Orleans. “Every time I do something like this, I reconnect with my faith,” Patrick said. “That’s what we were aiming for with the boys. When you’re going into a new cultural experience, you can’t help but Serra students fed the orphans a cornmeal porridge breakfast each day. The group prayed and sang songs together. To help Serra students process the situation, they were encouraged to pray and write in their journals. The teens also had a few unconventional rules to follow —no iPods and no cell phones. Yet the volunteers didn’t seem to care. Instead, they swapped stories, played cards and read books. They worked from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. and slept on air mattresses. Chores were assigned—setting the table, cooking dinner, washing dishes and planning evening prayer reflections. According to Immersion Program Coordinator Patrick Cody, “This is done in places where the realities of poverty, indignity and injustice call us – as disciples – to act and be present to our brothers and sisters in solidarity and service.” 4 GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES • Summer Immersion Kyle Lierk and art teacher Peggy Farrell took nine students to New Orleans July 11-25. “New Orleans is such a magnetic city,” Kyle noted. “It has an energy about it I haven’t found in any other city. The people get what matters most—relationships. They have such a sense of hospitality.” “The French Quarter is fine but it’s not so good in the 7th and 9th Wards where we worked,” Kyle said. “People are still recovering from the flood. Life is slowly getting back to normal but there are empty homes on every block with weeds and dry rot.” However, for every run-down home there were two freshly painted and landscaped. Kyle was amazed by can-doers who set examples in their neighborhoods by restoring battered homes. realize we all belong to a single human family.” Patrick said some students were uncomfortable at first—they dealt with children who were starving, mute and abandoned. “There was a certain hesitance,” Patrick admitted. “When you step into a big room with 45 disabled children, it’s shocking. Some of the disabilities were hard to take – cerebral palsy, malnourishment and deformities. Some kids had socks over their hands so they wouldn’t chew them. It was really outside our comfort zone.” Southern Hospitality Partnering with Corpus Christi Parish, the teens mowed lawns, painted shotgun-style homes and installed flooring. Yes, it was sweltering – temperatures hit the 80s and 90s with high humidity. “i became more open-minded and have a stronger work ethic,” said senior zach mirich. “it was scary in a sense and sad to visit the children in the orphanges. the orphans became like our brothers and sisters.” The Immersion Program is rooted in the Catholic Christian tradition. Uniting prayer and action based on the example of Jesus, participants live out the program tenets of spirituality, justice, solidarity and community. “I became more open-minded and have a stronger work ethic,” said senior Zach Mirich. “It was scary in a sense and sad to visit the children in the orphanages. You wonder how people can dump their children in those places. The orphans became like our brothers and sisters.” “They have such pride and the attitude ‘If I can do this, anyone can’,” Kyle said. Kyle Lierk shares a moment with new friends in Jamaica continued on following page GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES 5 Kyle Lierk Inspires Students As Serra High School’s Director of Campus Ministry, Kyle Lierk is able to witness some pretty amazing events with his students. Whether he’s taking a group of volunteers to a third-world country, planning a spiritual retreat or helping a friend in need, Kyle has found his calling. Some might say God had a hand in leading Kyle to the road less traveled. Growing up in Alliance, Nebraska —a town of 10,000 people—Kyle once thought he would become an accountant, working for one of the “big four.” At Creighton University in Omaha, he majored in marketing and international business. For senior Anthony Fusaro, the experience was life changing. “In some ways, I felt more like a part of the community in New Orleans than my community at home,” he admitted. “We really became friends with these people. I think it’s because they were so thankful and so welcoming. It made me want to do more.” Students learned how to shop on a budget. Some learned to cook for the first time. Corn dogs, tater tots, tacos and mac ’n’ cheese became staples. According to Kyle, “Some kids even said, ‘I have no idea how my mom does all of this after working all day,’ so they gained a deeper appreciation for their parents.” “These kids are going to be amazing citizens in the future,” Peggy said. “They gained an understanding of justice issues and built a great community. It was a huge jump for them in terms of their spirituality.” stench of decay and pushing his way through random bits of furniture, he found the tiny gold band under layers of filth. “These boys have a real passion for social justice and people’s rights,” Kyle said. “They get very motivated when they see injustice and know that they have an opportunity to make a difference. They work so hard for people they’ve never met, so it really is faith in action.” Patrick’s personal experience with an immersion program in 2001 changed his life forever. “When I went to El Salvador for my first immersion program, it led me to study theology instead of law,” he remembered. “We have to live it out if our faith is to be meaningful. When you intentionally serve and stand in solidarity, you understand the disorienting experience through the lens of your faith. That’s what faith is all about. We want to shake them up and say ‘These faith traditions really mean something. Open up your heart.’” Shared Stories The tales are endless, the lives changed numerous and the potential of the Summer Immersion Program limitless. “There is a fallacy right now that New Orleans is fine, but it’s not,” Kyle said. “You hear so many stories from the people. These stories transform you and should be passed on to educate others.” • Summer Immersion After graduation, he applied to Jesuit Volunteers International, an organization similar to the Peace\ Corps but with a spiritual foundation. He spent the next two years in Micronesia, an island a few hundred miles north of Australia. “It was a humbling experience, particularly because I was terrified of water being from the Midwest,” he recounted. “It really teaches you a lesson right away—it isn’t about you. It’s about what the need is. The experience was liberating and it was taking that first step as an adult. You really grow when you step out of your comfort zone.” Kyle taught literature to students at Xavier High School. With a limited faculty and staff, Kyle pitched in wherever needed, serving as Head Basketball Coach, Campus Minister and even Dean of Students. After his stint in Micronesia, Kyle moved back to Alliance and found a job as a youth minister at the parish where he grew up. However, he knew he needed more theological training and realized he needed to go back to school for an advanced degree. Kyle applied to the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley and was accepted into the three-year Master’s of Divinity program. After receiving his degree One of Kyle’s favorite stories happened the first year when Josh Montoya (’09) was on a quest to find a man’s wedding ring. The house was trashed beyond belief and had been flooded with 12 feet of water. Josh didn’t give up and, after breathing in the 6 GLOBAL PERSPECTIVES Kyle said God was working on his heart when he participated in the university’s Spring Break Service Trips program, a hands-on service experience for college students. “It was pretty basic service but I really enjoyed it,” Kyle said. “I liked the people who were drawn to that line of work.” Immersion Program Coordinator Patrick Cody helps feed young orphan in Jamaica in 2007, Kyle was hired by Serra as the new Director of Campus Ministry. “I knew I wanted to work with high school or college students,” Kyle said. “This age is such a pivotal one in terms of character development and faith formation. We get to walk with the guys at this age, helping them to prepare for the future and determine what role God is going to play in their lives.” Kyle enjoys working with his Campus Ministry Team: Immersion Coordinator Patrick Cody, Retreat Coordinator Rick Boesen, Assistant Retreat Co-ordinator Kim Bohnert, Liturgy Coordinator Stephen Baccari and Christian Service/Justice Coordinator Eric Morin. “I get to be here with amazing people in this department,” Kyle said. “We are expanding the current Campus Ministry model which allows us to go deeper into what we do in each area.” For example, Kyle and his team can’t wait to introduce the Kairos (Greek for “God’s time”) Retreat model next year. The four-day, three night retreat will be open to juniors and seniors. “My mission is to help these young men grow in their faith, wisdom, service, community and leadership – to share the mission of our school,” he said. “I hope when a guy looks back at his time at Serra, he will have the tools to know how to best connect with God.” Kyle lives in San Francisco with his wife, Meredith. His philosophy of life is simple: “I try to ask myself, ‘How can I look for and be love in every experience?’” he said. As for Campus Ministry, Kyle hopes students will drop in to share their own life experiences. “I really want this office to be a place that’s open and free for people to come in and share a story or two,” he said. “The Padre brotherhood is very real and very supportive. Everyone is welcome at all times.” A R O U N D T H E HA L L S 7 Serra Welcomes New Staff Members Jean Adams, Math Teacher Jean Adams is a numbers girl. She joined the Serra faculty in August as an AP calculus, AB and BC math teacher. “I enjoy math and hope that my passion for the subject comes through in my classroom,” she said. “I enjoy the students’ enthusiasm and have found the faculty at Serra to be very welcoming.” Jean said math is appreciated much more these days as a career option, particularly because of local students’ proximity to the Silicon Valley. “A strong background in math will help them to be successful in the tech world, either as a software or hardware engineer,” she said. As a student, Jean most enjoyed geometry and calculus. Sam Baum, Head Crew Coach At the crack of dawn, Sam Baum can be found rowing on glassy water at the Bair Island Aquatic Center in Redwood City. “Crew is a unique sport,” he said. “It is both physically and mentally strenuous. You are as strong as your weakest link, so you intrinsically bond with your boat mates.” Serra’s crew team of 29 practices two days a week from 5:45 to 8 a.m. and three days a week from 4 to 6 p.m. In mid-October, they attended the Head of the Charles, a national competition in Boston. “Calculus is interesting philosophically and in its applications to the real world,” she said. Jean received a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics from Reed College in Oregon and her teaching credential from San Francisco State University. “I wanted to be a physicist until I went to college and fell in love with my math classes,” she recounted. For the past nine years, Jean taught math at Notre Dame High School and served as the Math Department Chairperson. Jean grew up on the Peninsula and learned to swim at Serra Swim School. In fact, Keith Strange was her coach. Jean and her husband, Keith, live in San Carlos with their little boy, Emmett. Jean enjoys reading science fiction and cycling (she is a member of the Serra Cycling Club). Another hidden talent one might not know about Jean? She is an avid juggler and is adept at balancing balls, clubs and fruit! of Pastoral Ministry Master’s Program at Santa Clara University. “It took me four years and 49 days exactly,” Stephen recounted. “I graduated on July 31. Prior to graduation, I went to a job fair at my alma mater, St. Ignatius. Mr. Thornton was there and he was pleasantly surprised to hear that I had taken his advice. He realized that not too many would start a Master’s program at 48 and finish at 52 when most people are getting ready to retire.” “It’s a great atmosphere here,” he said. “It’s a tremendous environment to coach and it’s encouraging to have athletes who really want to be out on the water.” Sam graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in June with a degree in Communications. While on the East Coast in 2006, Sam’s team won the Eastern Sprints Regatta and placed third in the Inter Collegiate Championships. His new position at Serra is his first job after college. Stephen and his wife, Barbara, live in San Francisco. They have two grown sons, Anthony and Stephen Jr. “I want to emulate what the Salesian priests and brothers taught me during my year of teaching in Richmond,” he added. “They taught Craig Gianinno, Head Baseball Coach Craig Gianinno’s positive attitude is contagious. Whether he’s teaching baseball strategies on the field or life lessons to his athletes, Craig is enjoying his new position as Serra’s Head Baseball Coach. Sam grew up in Berkeley and was a member of Oakland Strokes Crew Club. After his dad persuaded him to give crew a chance, Sam realized he loved the competitive aspects of the sport. “It has a perfect mix of power and finesse,” he said. “It ended up being the team sport for me.” me that you never stop teaching young people. You can be 85 and if your heart is there, your desire is there and your will to be with young people is there, then you must be there. That’s what I plan doing here at Serra.” “I feel welcomed, embraced and supported,” he said. “I believe in the philosophy of the school’s mission statement and hope to align my baseball program with it. We encourage an atmosphere of fun that helps developing young men build strong foundations of self-esteem and self-worth. My first objective is to help them understand what a good man of character is.” As the Senior Regional Executive Director of Rhythm and Moves Inc., Craig is responsible for managing physical education curricula for 150 public and private schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Local parents will recognize Craig from the popular Preparing Legends Baseball Camp, where he has worked as Camp Director with College of San Mateo Head Baseball Coach Doug Williams since 2003. He also has served as a consultant to the Burlingame, Foster City, Hillsborough, Belmont and Redwood City Little League Coaching Clinic. According to Craig, the game of baseball prepares students for the ups and downs of the real world. “I try to be as real as possible with these kids,” he said. “I want them to learn how to be a tenacious competitor and have fun while competing. Coaches must be available to refer students to proper academic and spiritual resources. As a result, Padre baseball players will emerge not only as better ball players, but better students, citizens and family men as well.” While attending Bellevue University in Nebraska, Craig played in the 1995 NAIA (National Association of Interscholastic Athletics) college World Series. His team beat Tennessee’s Cumberland University. In 2008, he received a Master of Arts degree in education from National University. Craig and his wife, Bonnie, live in San Bruno with their 4-year-old twin daughters, Eliana and Sophia. Stephen Baccari, Campus Ministry Liturgy Coordinator Stephen finally has what he calls his “dream job” after making a mid-life decision to go back to school for his Master’s Degree in Theology. Serra’s brand new Liturgy Coordinator worked in the airline industry for many years but always felt in his heart he had another calling – teaching religion. Stephen always has been a man of service. While living in Danville, he met Father Daniel Cardelli (Serra ’48), the first student from Serra High School to be ordained. Father Cardelli encouraged Stephen to join SPRED (Special Religious 8 A R O U N D T H E HA L L S • New Staff Members Education), a Catholic ministry designed to meet the spiritual needs of people with developmental disabilities. “The main thing I learned from people with disabilities is that every encounter with another person is an experience that should be cherished,” Stephen said. “SPRED reiterated to me what was always in my heart – all I ever wanted to do was teach religion and coach young people. My faith has always been important to me. I want to help students see the value of having a relationship with God.” A twist of fate occurred when Stephen attended a career fair five years ago at Serra. He met Barry Thornton, who suggested that he go back to school for a Master’s Degree in Theology. Stephen enrolled in the School Antonia Ehlers, Communications Manager Antonia joined the Serra staff in September. A former newspaper reporter and editor, writing is her passion. As the new Communications Manager, Antonia will serve as the Editor of Traditions magazine and will provide direction for all major publications, such as admissions marketing materials. She will manage the school’s public relations program and work closely with the local media to increase Serra’s visibility in the Bay Area. “This is the perfect job for me—I absolutely love it,” Antonia said. “There is so much to write about and I have been so impressed by the wonderful things going on at Serra. I particularly enjoyed covering the amazing Summer Immersion Program led by Campus Ministry this past summer.” Antonia is a 1986 graduate of Notre Dame High School and a 1990 graduate of Santa Clara University. In addition to her work at Serra, Antonia is a freelance journalist and teaches creative writing workshops to children. When she’s not typing on her computer, Antonia enjoys traveling with her family, going to concerts and spending time at the beach. Antonia and her husband, Steve, a Burlingame firefighter/paramedic, live in San Carlos. They have three children, Emily, Tiffany and Liam. A R O U N D T H E HA L L S 9 Celebrating 30 Years Three cherished staff members have left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of their students, parents and colleagues. (Pictured l-r: Tom MacKenzie, Kevin Donahue and Keith Strange) Keith Strange Reaches for the Stars Assistant Principal Keith Strange’s motto is simple: “Strive for excellence.” As he looks back on three decades of education, he believes his mission always has been to help students reach their full potential. Growing up, Keith respected his teachers and coaches. Becoming a teacher was a natural extension of who he was as a man. After high school, Keith attended Princeton, UCLA and Santa Clara University. Teaching math at Serra was his very first job. “I have always enjoyed the opportunity to talk with boys about what it means to be a young man,” Keith said. “I tell them that they have a calling to be something outstanding. Sometimes they don’t realize their own potential. They don’t necessarily have to be king of industry, but they can all be excellent at something.” After teaching math for 22 years, Keith served as Dean of Students for a year before becoming Assistant Principal. In 2000, he received a Master’s Degree in Public Administration/Educational Administration from Notre Dame de Namur University. “My current goal is to work with the faculty and administrators to define success at Serra High School,” Keith said. “Serra is moving forward in a very positive way. It is so important to prepare our students for the challenges they will meet after they leave our school. We want Serra to be a beacon for academics, campus ministry, athletics and performing arts.” “You’ve got to think about what you’re called to do—you have great choices in life,” he said. “Why not be the best you can? Why would you choose to do anything less?” Keith and his wife, Lisa, have four children and two grandchildren between them. He continues to inspire his own children, grandchildren and Serra students. Kevin Donahue Jumps through Hoops for Athletes Athletic Director Kevin Donahue loves his job. Whether he’s visiting the field, baseball diamond, water, track or gymnasium, Kevin enjoys working with Serra students and coaches. “I love the field of athletics because you get instant results,” he said. “You have to work hard. You have to learn to deal with immediate success and failure. It’s a great teaching opportunity and it’s great preparation for life.” During the past 30 years, Kevin has taught history, physical education and typing. He has witnessed numerous changes in the classroom and on the playing field. “Serra is doing what it needs to do to move into the 21st Century,” Kevin said. “There is such a community here—people really take care of each other. There’s a special bond.” Coaches play a key role in the lives of the athletes. “In many cases, coaches are like a second parent,” he said. “They have a lot of influence on the kids. Coaches are a lot more conscious and aware of the needs of the athletes. We are not only educating the students about the skills of the sport, but also teaching them life skills about how to take care of their bodies. Our coaches are better trained these days. There’s a lot more emphasis on conditioning and strength training from the modern day coach.” As Serra’s Athletic Director, Kevin’s goal to empower his coaches and students by encouraging them to be all that they can. This includes team work and sportsmanship. “We work with kids on how to set goals and maximize their potential,” he explained. “We also support the coaches and provide with them with the tools they need to succeed.” Kevin stressed that no one sport or coach is more important than the next. He strives for balance on and off the field between all sports teams and coaches. He also wants parents to know there are open opportunities for all students. “For example, our team managers are very important,” Kevin noted. “They are such a valuable component of our sports program. Our managers help to set up, keep stats, run the clock and work on equipment. Some students videotape the games.” Kevin was born in San Francisco and raised in Oakland. He attended Bishop O’Dowd High School in Oakland. At Santa Clara University on a full basketball scholarship, his team qualified for the NCAA Tournament and played against UCLA’s Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kevin received his teaching credential from Holy Names College. Notable achievements include serving as the current president of the Central Coast Section Athletic Directors Association and the Vice President of the 1 0 A R O U N D T H E HA L L S • Staff Members Celebrate 30 Years A R O U N D T H E HA L L S 1 1 California State Athletic Directors Association. In 2005, Kevin was named Central Coast Section Athletic Director of the Year. “Education today is so focused on test scores and getting into college, the physical component often gets pushed by the wayside,” he added. “Students need lifelong lessons on how to keep physically fit. Athletics provides that balance in the educational system.” Reflecting on Serra’s current athletic program, Kevin said, “I’m very proud of the balance we have at Serra. All of our programs are competing at a very high level. I love watching our kids compete and build confidence. We will continue to provide opportunities for these athletes to succeed. As for his own fitness plan, Kevin jogs, walks and swims. He is an avid college football and basketball fan. His sports philosophy can be summed it up this way: “When you walk off that field – win or lose – you should be proud of the effort that you made. You shake hands after the game and learn from mistakes. When the game’s over, the game is over. Leave it on the field.” Kevin and his wife, Robin, reside in Danville. Kevin has four children, two stepsons and six grandchildren. When he’s on not the sidelines, he enjoys photography, gardening and traveling. Tom MacKenzie Shares Parenting Wisdom During the past three decades, Tom MacKenzie has seen all sorts of personal and academic struggles. As a school counselor, his goal is to help students to live happy, successful lives. Tom taught social studies at St. John’s and Riordan high schools before joining the Serra Staff in 1979. “Shortly after arriving at Serra, I began to look at discipline in a different way,” he recounted. “I found much of the discipline on campus to be negative. I proceeded, with the help of the administration and the support of the faculty, to change the nature of our disciplinary procedures from a punitive approach to a system based on establishing consequences.” Tom knew in his heart he wanted to help teens make positive decisions and to think about consequences instead of acting on impulse. Tom became a Serra High School counselor in 1990. Even today, Tom’s version of detention has a modern twist. Instead of sitting in silence for long periods of time, students go green by cleaning up school grounds. If they show a “spirit of cooperation” by cleaning the campus in a timely fashion, they are released early. “I love to help students get on the right track,” Tom said. “For example, someone might come into my office because he missed first period. I’ll work with him to solve the problem. If he has overslept, we look at ways to be more organized in the morning and develop better strategies to keep him out of detention.” junipero serra high school Tom believes the key to communicating with teenagers is simple: “You have to be honest, fair and reasonable.” Tom has had a lifetime of experience interacting with children, particularly since he is one of 12 children who lost their mother when Tom was only 5. He said today’s teen faces more challenges than teenagers 10, 20 and 30 years go. “Our students have computers, Facebook and You Tube,” he noted. “They deal with issues like cyber bullying. They are more tech smart. Teens 20 years ago were more street smart. Today we have a kinder, gentler student body.” His experience as a dad and grandfather, coupled with his work as a school counselor and coach, has taught him some valuable tips about raising teens: (1) Don’t box teenagers in a corner; (2) Allow teens to have choices; (3) Talk to children about consequences BEFORE they happen; (4) Establish ground rules ahead of time; (5) Parents should make decisions together, in private. “The key to raising successful teens is good judgment with a heavy dose of common sense,” Tom said. “Parents must always be on the same page. If they disagree, it should be done behind closed doors.” “Every day presents a new set of issues,” he added. “They can be issues with mom and dad, financial issues or their spiritual relationship with God. My job never gets boring. I get the most satisfaction when a student leaves my office feeling much better than when he walked in.” Tom and his wife, Caroline, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day 2010. Caroline is a fourth/fifth grade teacher at Meadow Heights Elementary School in San Mateo. The MacKenzies have two children, (Bob ’92 and Dani NDB ’89) and three grandchildren. n n u l R e p o rt 2008-2009 2008 A Message from Board Leaders This is an exciting time in Serra’s history! Student achievement is evident in every area of the school—in the classroom, the athletic arenas, the visual and performing arts and in the growing Campus Ministry program. Serra’s extracurricular activities are also expanding in new and exciting ways. become a reality over the next two years. It will provide state-ofthe-art facilities for our science, art and music programs as well as the Academic Resource Center. In addition, a new and expanded Aquatics Center and athletic training room will be part of this major campus renovation. Two great examples are the Robotics Club and the Mock Trial Team. In its inaugural season last year the Robotics Club won the “rookie of the year” award at the annual competition in San Jose sponsored by USFIRST.org (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology). The Mock Trial Team is off to a great start and its 25 man roster is hard at work preparing for a case they will be arguing later this year. Kevin Flynn ’82, Vice Chair and Lori Whitney, Chair Serra Advisory Board of Regents The design for the Center for the Arts and Sciences is now complete. This new academic building will The Advisory Board of Regents has worked closely with Serra’s staff in support of all of these efforts. This year we are refining our strategic plan, which will ensure Serra’s future growth and success. Serra is a community where students discover and develop their talents—from the moment they step foot on campus as freshmen, until the moment they receive their graduation diplomas. We encourage all parents and alumni to support Serra’s vision. Every gift of time, talent and treasure makes a tremendous difference. For each of these we are grateful. Serra Welcomes Three New Board Members Greg Hart ’76 Linda Lucido Josh Rafaelli ‘98 Greg Hart has served as a Commander with the Colma Police Department since January 2005. He has worked for the City of South San Francisco Police Department for 21 years and will retire on October 31st. Greg has been an avid Padre supporter, and currently serves as the President of the Alumni Association Board. This year, Lars Lund added the President of the Alumni Association as a member of the Board of Regents to help streamline communications between the school and the alumni. Greg is also the father of Serra Padres Steven ’05, Sean ’07, and Brendan ’10. Linda is Partner and Planning Director at Integrated Marketing Partners, a San Francisco-based marketing agency she helped co-found nearly 10 years ago. She works with technology and other businessto-business clients to plan integrated marketing campaigns. She has been a member of the board from its inception five years ago, most notably as Chair of the Buildings & Grounds committee. Before her service to the board she was an active member of the Mothers’ Auxiliary, serving as President. Her commitment and dedication to Serra has been unwavering. I would be remiss if I did not mention that Kathy’s proudest connection to Serra is her son, Donny ‘06, who is now a senior at UC Berkeley. Under her leadership, the board took on several important tasks that have led to continued improvement in our programs and clarity in our vision for the future. A short list of her many accomplishments include her leadership in transitioning the school to the President-Principal governance model and her work with the design group for Serra’s new Center for the Arts and Sciences. I am personally grateful to Kathy for her hard work on Serra’s behalf. I am happy to report that Kathy will remain on the board as the chair of its 21st Century Learning Committee. Thank you, Kathy! Jim Doherty ’75 and freshman son Matt Serra alumni dads and sons attended a special Mass and breakfast on September 4. Attendance was almost twice that of past years. “The Mass celebrates the values we believe as a school that have been passed down from generation to generation,” said Principal Barry Thornton. During the Mass, dads and sons placed candles in a galvanized tub. By the end of the Mass, the candles melted together to signify unity. Father Howell pointed out that the chalice is the same chalice that was presented to Father Zoph on June 6, 1936. Particularly moving was the open forum-style Prayers of the Faithful. Students and their fathers prayed for all sorts of personal and community issues. After Mass, the group was served a light breakfast. Seniors and their dads were given a special commemorative frame. The rest of the crowd enjoyed seeing faces from the past and meeting new friends. “It’s carrying on tradition and it’s a reflection of the past for me and the future for my son,” said Jim Doherty ’74. Jim’s son, Matt, said the fact that his dad is a Padre makes his new high school experience even more special. Matt’s favorite freshman subject so far? Theology. Reich “ It’s obvious that without financial aid it would be unlikely that I would have had the opportunity to graduate from the University of the Pacific. If I did not attend Pacific I might not have had the opportunities to grow as a leader. However, what many may not know is how crucial financial aid was at a much earlier age. Being raised in a single parent home on government assistance made it nearly impossible to attend Serra without financial aid. In my eyes Serra is where the foundation was laid to excel in college and, hopefully, now in law school. Without the generosity of the Serra community, I could not even imagine where I would be today. Hurley Scholarship Fund to commemorate their 50th reunion at Serra. Dennis is excited that his fellow alums donated more than $25,000 to the new scholarship fund—evidence that the deep bonds formed at Serra continue throughout a lifetime. Archbishop Hurley taught English, speech and religion at Serra from 19541957 before moving to Washington D.C. He later moved to Alaska and retired as the Archbishop of Anchorage in 2002. Archbishop Hurley and Dennis have remained lifelong friends. The Archbishop was surprised and honored to learn a scholarship fund had been established in his name. “This is a very timely scholarship, particularly now with the current economic situation,” Archbishop Hurley said. “Those who are doing well should think very much about supporting this scholarship fund. Nothing is more important than helping students and their families when there’s a real financial need.” Dennis hopes that other classes will add to the new scholarship fund so that more students will be able to reap the benefits of a Serra education. A recent highlight for him was reconnecting with his classmates at his 50th reunion in September of 2008. “Everybody had such a great time at the reunion,” he said. “It was good to see everybody and renew acquaintances. I have such fond memories of Serra. We all have a real sense of being a person for others. That means that we should be sharing the wealth and spreading the good word that the priests at Serra taught us years ago. We left Serra with the spiritual seeds to grow and make the world a better place.” If you would like to contribute to the Archbishop Francis T. Hurley Scholarship Fund, please send your gift to Junípero Serra High School Development Office, 451 West 20th Avenue, San Mateo, CA 94403-1385. Be sure to include a note designating your gift to the Archbishop Francis T. Hurley Scholarship Fund. Fund A Dream Scholarship Luncheon Serra Padres are thoughtful, accomplished young men who value their Serra experience. The Fund A Dream Luncheon assures that each young man who dreams of becoming a Padre will have an opportunity to be a part of Serra, regardless of his family’s ability to afford tuition. The Fifth Annual Fund A Dream Luncheon was the most successful ever, raising $145,000 for tuition assistance for Serra’s deserving young men. If you are interested in attending the 2010 Fund A Dream Luncheon, please contact Theresa Stoye at 650.573.9935 x189 or email tstoye@serrahs.com. We call this The Serra Way. It’s the result of my 20 years of football and sports experience. Through the game of football we are teaching lasting life lessons to our men. Many people have asked how they can be involved with the TriSchool theater program, whether just wanting to stay in the communication loop or actively assisting with their time and talent. TRISTARS is the organization that encompasses the many staff, students, alumni, parents and community of supporters of Tri-School Productions, our award-winning Mercy, Notre Dame and Serra Theater Company. TRISTARS kicked things off last spring with “Twenty Years of Tri-School,” the first annual cabaret night featuring stage performers, pit musicians and stage crew from all 20 years of Tri-School. The night included one highlight after another as past performers - many of them professional actors and actresses traveling from as far away as Chicago and New York - reprised some of the most memorable songs of the past 20 years. The show also featured the Spring 2009 cast performing selections from the record-breaking production of “Footloose.” The event sold out with an audience of more than 400 people. If you would like to be part of TRISTARS, we would love to hear from you. Go to the TRISTARS page on the Serra website and enroll today! Mr. Dave Goddard Mr. and Mrs. John Burr Mr. and Mrs. Peter C. Dreier August 3, 1949 ~ August 10, 2009 Monsignor Bruce Dreier, one of the most respected and well-liked priests of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, lost an eight-month battle with cancer and passed away on Aug. 10 at the age of 60. Monsignor Dreier was a member of Serra’s Board of Regents for the past four years and a true Padre at heart. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of San Francisco in 1978, and was named a Prelate of Honor with the title of Monsignor by Pope John Paul II in 2000. Monsignor served at parishes including St. Elizabeth and St. Cecilia in San Francisco before his appointment as pastor of Church of the Epiphany in 1992. He was the pastor of St. Robert’s Parish in San Bruno since 2004. Kevin Carey ’93 teaches is the Social Studies Department Chair of Serra High School. He spent many hours with Monsignor at St. Robert’s. “He was a great man – a true priest,” Kevin said. “He wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and work in all aspects of the parish. When my mother died in 2006, he was my pastor. He always checked on me and was a great advocate for the everyday parishioner.” Serra High School Librarian Susan Cordes also belongs to St. Robert’s Parish. “He was a part of everything and was such a nice man,” she said. “He set a great example.” Monsignor was a former chaplain to the San Francisco Fire Department, Sacred Heart Cathedral high school, and former director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of San Francisco. Serra President Lars Lund recalled meeting Msgr. Dreier when they were graduate students at the University of San Francisco: “I was struck by how friendly and downto-earth Bruce was to each of his classmates. I had the privilege of working with him during my days as an Assistant Superintendent for the Department of Catholic Schools and I was very impressed by his dedication to and support of the Catholic schools in each of the parishes in which he served. He was a great supporter of Serra and played a very important role on the Serra Finance Committee. We will miss his wisdom, sense of humor and positive presence.” In Memoriam Judith Ann Chalkley, the mother of William Chalkley ’79, Michael and Elizabeth, passed away on June 25, 2009. She was the sister of John P. Hunter ’61 and the aunt of Christopher Hunter ’00 and Matthew Hunter ’00. Jerry Colombo ’63 passed away on July 24, 2009. John “Jack” Joseph Conneely, the father of John ‘84, Matt ‘86, Bryan ’88 and Todd ’92, passed away on July 30, 2009. Mr. Conneely is survived by his sons, seven grandchildren, his sister and three brothers. He was a proud Padre father who shared many wonderful memories with his sons and the Serra High School community. Steven Hart ‘05 passed away on August 24th. Thomas Hughes, the father of Tom Jr. ’60 and Dan ‘63, passed away in Napa on August 23, 2009. He was 93. Mr. Hughes was at Father Flanagan’s Boys Town and graduated in the first class of 1932. Jim McGinnis ‘60, founder and co-director of the Institute for Peace & Justice passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009. Jim died of an apparent heart attack while on his morning walk in his St. Louis neighborhood. Jim was the recipient of Serra’s first annual Junípero Serra Award in 1982, which is presented to an alumnus who best exemplifies through his life the goals and objectives of Catholic Education. He received the Junípero Serra medal at a mass held in the Serra Chapel in his honor. Jim attended Our Lady of Angels Elementary School in Burlingame before attending Serra, where he earned a perfect 4.0 grade point average for four years and participated in baseball and basketball. Jim is survived by his wife Kathy, co-founder and codirector of the IPJ, and their three children David, Tom and Theresa, and three grandchildren. John Havice Jones ’80 passed away on October 1, 2009 in Seoul, Korea after suffering injuries from a motorcycle accident. He is survived by his wife, Kwisook Choi; his father, Jack Jones; his stepmother, Sheila Jones and his sisters, Margaret Verduin and Susan Jones. Mr. Jones was the son of the late Lois Erna Jones. His father remembers his son riding his bike to Serra from Half Moon Bay. After graduating from Serra, John attended U.C. Berkeley and ran a communications business in Korea. Mr. Raymond J. Whelan A N N UA L R E P O RT 4 9 Alumni News Making a Difference, One Act at Time Serra alum Scott Syme Jr. ’06 recently embarked on a two-week mission trip to Cape Town, South Africa. The life-changing experience led the University of Arizona senior to plan a comedy ministry for children in need. Must Love Dogs: Serra Alums Reconnect through TAILS Program Correctional Officer Greg Businger ’83 ran into an old friend a few weeks ago while leading a new pooch-friendly program for inmates. He and Lieutenant Tom Gallagher ’85 remembered Padre tales from the past while settling Buster, a Pointer mix, into his new home. Just days before he left, Scott was short $1000 and wondered if he would be able to make the trip. While praying with his Christian service group, Chi Alpha, a woman called and gave an anonymous donation—everything was paid for in full. Scott and the Chi Alpha team arrived in Cape Town on May 24 and left on June 11. They visited children in an orphanage and cleared a large patch of grass for a new soccer field. The college students stayed at a Christian facility known as “the Kibbutz,” which was smack dab in the middle of a sketchy neighbor-hood known for gangs and violence. There, they planned improvisational acting activities for boys at the Eco Club. “The boys adored these games and we all had fun as a team,” Scott said. “Our trip was filled with amazing stories, laughter and tears.” Most memorable to Scott was when the team preached to a local church community. The group wrote the sermon together and talked about building one’s life on the sand or on God’s rock. After the service, the director thanked them and informed the team that the same message had been preached earlier that year by five separate missions teams! Scott Syme ’06 makes childen smile in South Africa. Scott discovered the art of improv when he was a student at Serra High School. He joined Gary Meegan’s Improv Club and appeared in eight plays and musicals, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “Aida” and “Les Miserables.” His favorite production of all time was “Little Shop of Horrors”. At the University of Arizona, Scott is majoring in creative writing with a minor in theater arts. He currently is working on an improv comedy ministry. “Improv is creative, inventive and live,” Scott noted. “I like the idea of creating something in an instant. This is a new way to spread God’s word to the lost, through comedy.” Alumni parents Peter and Loretta Cailles attended Parents’ Weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis September 11-13, where they were reunited with their son, Midshipman Gavin Cailles ’07. The family spent the weekend exploring the historic academy and the quaint town of Annapolis. Gavin’s brother, Marshall ’10, was unable to attend. A highlight for Peter and Loretta was roll call on deck. Midshipmen stood at attention while listening to daily announcements. Lunch in the King Hall dining room was also memorable. More than 4,000 Midshipmen and their parents filled the room. “We ate in 35 minutes, family style,” Loretta noted. “I have never heard so many ‘Mam, would you please pass,’ phrases. I kept looking for my grandmother. Deputy Bob Madigan was instrumental in bringing the program to life. He read many articles about similar programs in other states and was amazed by their success rates. Inmates train the dogs from 7 a.m. until 10 p.m. every day, seven days a week. On Fridays, they have a structured one-hour class led by Peninsula Humane Society volunteers. “The inmates look forward to TAILS because it gives them something meaningful to do,” said Peninsula Humane Society Senior Vice President Scott Delucchi ‘85. “It’s rewarding to know that their efforts will help to get these dogs adopted.” Padre Midshipmen Invite Parents to Annapolis Parents only have two chances to visit their Midshipmen in Bancroft Hall—once during Plebe (freshman) year and the other during Second Class (junior) year. “The term ‘ship shape’ came to mind,” Loretta said. “Gavin’s room was never this clean when he was at home!” TAILS (Transitioning Animals Into Loving Situations) is a joint partnership between the San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Office and the Peninsula Humane Society. The eight-week program is held at the minimum security transitional facility on Maple Street in Redwood City. Inmates work with dogs daily, teaching them simple commands such as “sit,” “yield,” “come,” “stay” and “lie down.” Some dogs come in shy and skittish but leave friendly and well-behaved. Midshipmen LtoR: Cameron Wood ’09, Gavin Callies ’07, John Minahan ’08 “The full-dress Formal Parade was beautiful,” she added. “The whole Brigade marched with sharp, clean turns as they reached their destinations.” For Peter and Loretta, the best part of the weekend was catching up with Gavin and his friends. Padres Cameron Wood ’09 and John Minahan ’08 joined the group for dinner. “They were all so excited when we told them we would have a barbecue just like the crew days at Serra,” Loretta said. “We hosted the barbecue at our hotel and enjoyed visiting with old and new friends.” “Dogs selected for the TAILS program have issues keeping them getting adopted or issues which would likely lead to them getting returned,” he added. “Some dogs are extremely shy and withdrawn and need time to trust humans. Others need basic doggie ‘manners’ and training. More important, the inmates’ significant time with the dogs outside of class helps them to become pets people would love for their own families.” Buster was one of the program’s first three graduates. He came to the shelter quiet and withdrawn, but has become confident, playful, and outgoing. He and two other dogs —Charlie and Quincy—are thriving after eight weeks of training. Tom Gallagher ’85 takes a break with Buster and Mancha. “I went over to take a look at the program, saw Buster and we bonded,” said Tom, a Lieutenant in the San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Office. “I said, ‘I would love to bring Buster home.’” That’s exactly what Tom ended up doing when he learned nobody had stepped forward to adopt Buster. Today, the pooch is much more relaxed and loves life in the country. Buster is great with Tom’s children and has made a new friend, Mancha, a chocolate lab. “The program has not only helped the animals but has bolstered our programs for inmates,” Tom said. “We are looking for creative ways to rehabilitate the inmates and reduce recidivism. We don’t like to have repeat customers! TAILS helps the inmates to start believing in themselves and it gives them job skills.” Tom noted that there are 30-plus Padres working at the San Mateo County Sheriff ’s Office. “Greg is Buster’s godfather,” he said. “I keep telling him I’m going to tell Buster I was forced to buy an elevator pass from Greg when I was a freshman at Serra.” “As for the elevator pass and in light of him now being my supervisor, I have no comment,” Greg laughed. “I run into so many people from Serra. There are so many Padres who still live here in our local community. Once a Padre, you’re always a Padre; that’s all you need.” A LU M N I N E WS 5 1 Ryan Svendsen Rocks the Stage Talent plus tenacity equals success. Ryan Svendsen ’06 has that special blend. The brilliant UCLA trumpeter recently played with the Dave Matthews Band while filming the famous group’s latest video, “You and Me.” Ryan listened to the Dave Matthews Band during his high school years at Serra. Three years ago, he asked DMB’s manager if the band had considered adding a trumpet to its ensemble. Unfortunately, they had just hired another musician. Ryan did what any serious musician would do – he sent an email to the manager of Robert Randolph and the Family Band, the opening act for Dave Matthews. (L-R): Dhruv Patel ’06 and Ken Zurcher ’08 assess patients in Honduras UCLA Pre-med Students Spread Padre Spirit Imagine being halfway around the world and meeting a fellow Padre for the first time. That is exactly what happened to Dhruv Patel ’06 and Ken Zurcher ’08 when they joined the UCLA Medical Brigades, an outreach program that helps people in third-world countries. While traveling to povertystricken Honduras, the Serra graduates discovered they had both attended the same high school. “I have such Serra pride and Ken overheard me talking to some other students about high school,” Dhruv recounted. “Ken said, ‘I went there too!’ I couldn’t believe it.” Ken is majoring in anthropology and hopes to become an emergency room physician one day. “Serra really teaches a sense of community – not just between Padres, but also among people in general,” he said. “As you grow to understand the meaning of service – really find the good in it – it becomes an opportunity, an honor. I view becoming a doctor as a way for me to continue service to others. I can say without a doubt that the values I learned at Serra led me down this path.” In Honduras, 35 UCLA students visited three villages and gave medication to approximately 400 patients each day. They spoke to their patients in Spanish while assessing their symptoms. Two doctors were on site to determine patients’ conditions and prognoses. Although the country is lush and extremely beautiful, people in rural areas face extreme poverty and dangerous water conditions. “A lot of people complained of stomach problems from parasites,” Dhruv noted. “Most people – including the children – had very bad tooth decay. There were also so many young pregnant women.” 5 2 A LU M N I N E WS One 21-year-old mother juggled four children in her arms —ages 6, 3, 2 and newborn. The family shared common stomach problems, which probably were a sign of parasites. “Many people in Honduras don’t have access to meticulously filtered water, thus making it easier for bacteria to find a way into their bodies,” said Dhruv, a fourth-year biology student with dreams of becoming a cardiologist. “They don’t get proper nutrients so a lot of people are malnourished. So many people lived in poverty yet they inspired me so much. They were always smiling and were just happy with less.” “I got in touch with the manager and said, ‘You have horns on your album but not in the band’,” Ryan remembered. “They said ‘OK, come and hang out with us.’ That’s exactly what I did. I was a freshman in college and still 18!” One introduction led to another and he was asked to play in the Dave Matthews video, which took 10 hours to shoot. The new track is featured on DMB’s new CD, “Big Whiskey and the Groo Grux King.” “I hung out with the band and brought Dave Matthews a bottle of wine,” Ryan said. “They are all the most humble people ever. They talk about normal things but you can see the passion they have for music.” Dhruv remembered the day he and the UCLA students played soccer with children ages 8-15 at a Honduran orphanage. “These kids didn’t have shoes and they beat us 7-2 – it was pretty humbling!” According to Dhruv, his four years at Serra High School instilled a love of community service. Early Notes “Serra focused on turning us into men,” he explained. “Community service was a huge part of my life at Serra and it was the first stepping stone to finding my true passion for medicine. I have always wanted to help people. At Serra, we learned to give to others and be selfless.” At Serra, Ryan played in the jazz band and in the orchestra for musicals including “Les Miserables” and “Beauty and the Beast.” According to Ryan, “Playing in the orchestra was so cool and it was the best seat in the house!” When Serra High School President Lars Lund learned about these Padres connecting in a land thousands of miles away, he commented, “Finding happiness by making a positive difference in the lives of others has always been at the core of Serra’s mission. It’s very gratifying to know that Serra’s commitment to educating men of service and leadership is a legacy that our alumni take seriously.” Ryan chose the trumpet as his instrument of choice in fifth grade at Park Elementary School. “I chose the trumpet because it had three valves, so I thought it would be the easiest instrument,” he recounted. “Actually, it turned out to be one of the hardest!” Although Ryan was on the Serra water polo and swim teams for a few years, at Serra, he realized he needed to dedicate himself to one activity if he wanted to seriously pursue a career in music. He focused solely on the trumpet during his senior year and became a member of the Peninsula Youth Orchestra and the California Youth Symphony. The young musician practiced at least three hours a day and also auditioned at universities including Eastman, Julliard, UCLA, USC and Vanderbilt. (L-R): Ryan Svendsen ’06 and Dave Matthews “It definitely built up my nerves – I would walk in, play for 15 minutes and then wait for several months to see if I had been accepted,” Ryan said. “I chose UCLA because I wanted a school that had more than a conservatory. I wanted to take regular classes and be with a diverse group of students.” The Music Man As a music major at UCLA, Ryan has worked with worldrenowned trumpet player and Professor Jens Lindemann. “It’s a pretty amazing major,” Ryan said. “I have traveled to Hong Kong and Japan. There are so many opportunities in L.A. to go to concerts at the Greek Theater, House of Blues and other historic venues.” Ryan’s hours of practicing paid off when he went to work for Warner Music Group. As an L.A. College Representative, he sets up interviews with famous musicians and helps with promotions. Ryan has played with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ryan Shaw and Dee Dee Bridgewater. He is a member of the UCLA Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Brass Choir. Ryan will graduate in June. He plans to attend graduate school but might try the East Coast for a change of pace. During the next few months, Ryan will audition for programs at Yale, Northwestern, UCLA, USC and Julliard. What does he picture himself doing 10 years from now? “Working as the CEO of Warner Music Group,” he said with a laugh, “or hopefully playing the trumpet with one of my favorite bands.” A LU M N I N E WS 5 3 Class Notes 1963 father timothy kidney is serving in a cooperative mission project between Jamaican Bishop Charles Dufour of Montego Bay, San Jose’s Bishop P.J.
