Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church of Abita Springs, Louisiana Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost August 23, 2015 — A Prophet without Honor 1 Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church Abita Springs, Louisiana The mission of Trinity Lutheran Church is to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ and to go and share the good news of Jesus Christ until he returns to take us home. WELCOME TO WORSHIP Welcome! We consider it a privilege to worship the Lord with you this morning. In our service we gather before our almighty God to offer him our worship and praise. We also gather to strengthen ourselves through the study of God’s holy and powerful word. If you are looking for a church home, we are happy to share ours with you. Please come again and worship with us very soon! Bring the kids. Children are always welcome at our worship services. If your child is having a difficult morning, there is a speaker in the Fellowship Hall which will allow you to hear the service. Restrooms are located in the Fellowship Hall next door. Don’t feel obligated. Our members give offerings to the Lord as an expression of thanks for his love. When the offering plate is passed, you’re not expected to give an offering; it’s your choice. While the offering is gathered, we’ll ask you to sign our Friendship Register. Leave any information you’re comfortable giving us—we use it simply to thank you for coming and to invite you back. Make yourself at home. After our services, we normally join together in the Fellowship Hall for coffee, snacks, and conversation. We’d be honored if you could join us! 2 BEFORE WORSHIP As you prepare to worship your Lord today, spend a few quiet moments in prayer before the service. Helpful prayers, including the one below, may be found in the front section of the hymnal, pages 10-11 and 134-139. O Lord—our Maker, Redeemer, and Comforter—we are assembled in your presence to hear your holy Word. We pray that you open our hearts by your Holy Spirit, that through the preaching of your Word we may repent of our sins, believe in Jesus, and grow day by day in grace and holiness. Hear us for Jesus’ sake. Amen. TODAY’S WORSHIP THEME Everyone seems to love Jesus. Some people today use him as an example of love as though the only words he had to say were, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” The rest of what Jesus had to say might not seem as important. People reject other controversial things he has said. That was true when Jesus ministered here on earth too. Today we see our Prophet rejected in his home town. C: Amen 4 PSALM 95 Venite 5 CONFESSION OF SINS M: God invites us to come into his presence and worship him with humble and penitent hearts. Therefore, let us acknowledge our sinfulness and ask him to forgive us. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. BE SEATED 6 THE WORD LESSON Ezekiel 2:1-5 He said to me, "Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you." 2As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me. 3 He said: "Son of man, I am sending you to the Israelites, to a rebellious nation that has rebelled against me; they and their fathers have been in revolt against me to this very day. 4The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says.' 5And whether they listen or fail to listen-- for they are a rebellious house-- they will know that a prophet has been among them. 1 7 PSALM OF THE DAY Psalm 143 Refrain O LORD, hear my prayer, listen to my cry for mercy; in your faithfulness and righteousness come to my relief. Do not bring your servant into judgment, for no one living is righteous before you. My spirit grows faint within me; my heart within me is dismayed. Refrain Answer me quickly, O LORD; do not hide your face from me. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,* is now, and will be forever. Amen. Refrain 8 VERSE OF THE DAY M: Alleluia. The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any twoedged sword, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Alleluia. (Hebrews 4:12 cf. RSV) C: Alleluia! STAND GOSPEL Mark 6:1-6 Jesus left there and went to his hometown, accompanied by his disciples. 2When the Sabbath came, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. "Where did this man get these things?" they asked. "What's this wisdom that has been given him, that he even does miracles! 3Isn't this the carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. 4Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6And he was amazed at their lack of faith. Then Jesus went around teaching from village to village. 1 BE SEATED HYMN OF THE DAY Lord Jesus Christ, the Church’s Head 536 SERMON A Prophet without Honor Mark 6:1-6 9 STAND WE PRAISE YOU, O GOD Te Deum 10 BE SEATED 11 THANKSGIVING THE OFFERING Moved by God’s love in Christ, we offer him our first and best gifts, purely out of thanks to him.
