Laundry Keep Moving for Health Trendwest South Pacific was one of the proud sponsors who supported the Fijian Rotary Walkathon on March 18. Promoting an active and healthy lifestyle, the Rotary Club’s first Community Fun Run/Walk attracted over 800 participants, including some very enthusiastic owners on holiday at WorldMark Denarau Island. In the presence of the Fijian Vice President, Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi, the event raised much needed funds for the local school community. As well as donating towards the event Trendwest also pledged a further F$100 for every lead turned into a tour, from that day. WorldMark Denarau Island has a long history of providing support and education to the local community. Focusing on village initiatives, the resort donates food and gifts for official village functions and has provided computer hardware to the village church and chief. The resort is also committed to assisting local schools, and has donated much needed airconditioning and building supplies. WorldMark Denarau Island has also developed a scholarship programme which allows selected local children, and WorldMark Denarau Island staff, to pursue a tertiary education. This positive presence has earned WorldMark Denarau Island employer-of-choice status on the island and the respect of the Fijian Great Council of Chiefs. T he Treasures of Spain, Morocco and Portugal is an exciting 16 day Club Tour into the heart of the Mediterranean. Providing a treasure chest of highlights and unforgettable scenery, this tour will leave you mesmerised. Sit back, relax and be guided though a moveable feast of sights and sounds. Exciting cities, medieval castles and fortresses are just some of the treats in store. Spain is one of the most diverse and visually stunning nations in Europe. Spain has long been a meeting point (and battleground) for a myriad of civilisations and, as a result, the country brims with remnants of a glorious and chaotic past. Travellers are presented with a silver-service experience of culture and charm iconic to the region. Discover the extraordinary Moorish architecture of the Alhambra Palace in Granada, marvel at the jewels on display at the world-renowned El Prado Museum and sample wines produced from the sun-kissed vineyards that grace Valdepeñas. A short boat trip across the Straits of Gibraltar and you’re in Morocco, a land full of tantalising vistas and aromas. Tangier, Casablanca, Marrakesh - just the names of these cities stir the imagination. Morocco is a land so intrinsically beautiful and rich with heritage that the moment you step foot on it you feel completely transported to another time. This allure has captured the hearts and dreams of adventurers and travellers for centuries. Morocco has been thoroughly mythologised and for good reason. It is a country where the spices and bazaar of the East come together with the West, in a collision of colour and vibrancy. And it’s the perfect place to haggle for carpets in the Casbah. spainsensations spanish sensations From the magic of Morocco the tour moves to Portugal where you can uncover the many attractions and excitement of Lisbon. Scattered with beauty, diversity and customs, this is a city overflowing with surprises. From castles to monasteries, the monuments of the Lisbon region trace the history of Portuguese architecture and art back thousands of years. This luminous city boasts an eclectic blend of cosmopolitan lifestyle with tradition, in an exciting concoction with something for everyone. The Treasures of Spain, Morocco and Portugal Club Tour offers an exotic holiday experience filled with fascinating cultural experiences, friendly people and delicious food. The feelings of nostalgia are forced upon you as if left behind from other passers by, equally as overwhelmed by the statuesque gardens, artistic imagery and skeletal relics to behold. I n this country of sheer architecture and art born from genius there is little you will find uninteresting. Where the shop displays compete for attention and magnificence against the architecture – Rome represents an overexposed world of grandeur and contrast. The world continues to learn from Italian style but seeing the iconic representations of gods and demons, the palatial buildings and sheer unworldly architecture, this mismatched city of contradictory features opens your eyes to a history rich with indulgence, and therein lies its style. The feelings of nostalgia are forced upon you as if left behind from other passers by, equally as overwhelmed by the statuesque gardens, artistic imagery and skeletal relics to behold. 14 Wandering down the narrow streets from the Termini Station towards the pedestrian walkways lined with shops and wine bars, be mindful of the traffic. The first thing to be aware of in this crazy maze of ancient and new streets is that crossing the road is a near impossible task. This is a city where congratulatory tickets should be given to motorists who abide by and are respectful of traffic rules! However, given the labyrinth-like side streets and back alleys the main centre of Rome is surprisingly easy to navigate through. Bear in mind a few things: the River Tiber divides Rome from North to South and most of the historical sites are in the East. italy Restoration of the Eternal City has recently been completed allowing the capital to be seen in all its glory, with mood-lighting and re-laid paving and fixtures bringing back the grandiose imagery of the city’s facade. For those visiting ancient Rome’s ruins, the Forum and Colosseum are both nestled between the Capitoline and Palatine hills. The Forum, once the political and economic centre of Rome, has little left with just a few pieces of marble, columns and a rough floor plan. However, the remnants are still so awe-inspiring that it isn’t hard to imagine the building during Caesar’s rule. The Piazza del Campidoglio is only a short distance away (originally designed by Michelangelo it took more than a century to complete). The world’s oldest public museums are also a fascinating distraction. The Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo Dei Conservatori together make up the Capitoline Museums and house some of the finest collections of Renaissance art and sculpture to be seen. Of course there is no shortage of churches in Italy and Rome. The Church of the Santa Maria in Aracoeli is right on the brow of the hill and of course there’s Vatican City. The views of the Vatican gardens are amazing along with Bernini’s piazza and the city below. The under chapels contain Michelangelo’s Pieta and the tombs of recent popes. The Basilica at the end of the route is the one containing Michelangelo’s frescoes, the Last Judgement and the renaissance works by Botticelli, Rosselli and Signorelli. Moving on from Rome there is plenty to see in this vast country of Italy. Take a scenic drive along the Amalfi coast or try a nice Chianti in the Chianti wine region. Travel to Capri and see the geological marvel of the Blue Grotto or Juliet’s balcony at fair Verona, or lose yourself in the amazing canals of ultra-romantic Venice. There are always numerous outdoor festivals, concerts and markets being held too – just find out at your local information stand what’s on. For a sly tip at sightseeing: most desert the city for the beaches and mountains in summer time which makes it an ideal time to explore. For the young travellers Testaccio is a great summertime getaway. Festivals are rife and the collection of cool participants make it the scene to be part of. 15 The remnants are still so aweinspiring... Discover Italy with WorldMark. If this is you, then I suggest you holiday at WorldMark Denarau Island in Fiji. WorldMark in Fiji is your ultimate all-in-one holiday experience. If you are after just pure relaxation, as I was, simply stay put at the resort. Lull away the afternoon under one of the huts by the beach with front row seats to the sunset. Cool down at any time, jump into the pool, which is the largest in the area. When tired, have a break and swim to the pool bar where the bartender is ready to make your favorite drink. You can also order at the restaurant just next to the pool and your food gets delivered to your chosen relaxation spot. Now if that is too much then go have a massage. For all your beauty needs, including traditional hair braids, visit the hair and beauty centre as my friend did. Now, not all of us are into quiet afternoons. If you are after action and adventure as my kids are, then all you ever need is also at the resort. Kayaking is available all day and so is sailing in a hobbycat. Snorkelling, parasailing or any other water sports, are right here at the resort. The other fantastic thing is that if you are after the authentic Fijian experience, then the resort offers that also. Every week they have the traditional lovo feast which we went to. This was accompanied by a display of various Polynesian dances including a fire dance. My husband almost got burned for being too close to the dancers! Throughout the week, we went to the various cultural activities at the resort such as kava tasting, lovo demonstration, language lessons and basket weaving. Everyday before sunset we got the traditional serenade by the pool bar. And as the sun begins to set, the Fijian drums start to sound and the torches are lit to signal the end of another blissful day. So if you’ve always wanted that complete holiday experience without having to step out of the resort, then go to WorldMark Denarau, mate! Grace Corpuz Have you got a great story from your latest WorldMark holiday?
