Major public services and businesses were closed across the region, roads were impassable, the Gold Coast airport shut down, and even icons like Dreamworld and Pacific Fair closed their doors. Sadly, there were two fatalities from the flooding, as well as families who lost all their possessions and even their homes. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to all those affected by this terrible event. However thanks must be passed on to the staff of WorldMark Kirra Beach who helped relocate 99 owner families when the resort had to close due to the freak weather downpour. SYDNEY - HERE WE COME! Almost a third of owners recently surveyed stated that they would like to holiday in Sydney with WorldMark. This will soon be possible with Trendwest South Pacific announcing the purchase of Southern Cross Suites, which will be rebranded Trendwest Suites Sydney. As it was school holidays, the resort was at 100% occupancy, and it was a major feat of coordination to find alternative accommodation. One staff member even worked all day assisting owners even though their own house had succumbed to the floodwaters. So on behalf of WorldMark owners and staff, we would like to congratulate and thank the WorldMark Kirra Beach staff for your outstanding efforts. Centrally located with the CBD, Darling Habour and the entertainment precinct within walking distance, the hotel will be the first Australian urban destination for WorldMark. Updates on the refurbishment, credit values and season dates will be released in upcoming issues of Destinations South Pacific, so watch this space! Discover the exciting possibilities WorldMark ownership provides at a workshop near you. J an Silijanovska from Sydney loves to holiday. She enjoys exploring new places and takes immense pleasure in the luxury of not needing to be anywhere. In 2000 Jan and her sister became owners of WorldMark South Pacific, this enabled their families to enjoy numerous holidays together. Having experienced the hospitality of WorldMark Port Stephens and WorldMark Port Macquarie, Jan and her sister Biljana Ristevska both agreed those family holidays were lacking something: the rest of the family. To see the 2005 New Year in as a family, Jan and her sister decided to refer their cousin, Liz Ignatova to an Owner Referral consultant. Liz was invited to a relaxed and informative WorldMark presentation, where they discovered all the benefits of holiday ownership. They loved the concept and became owners also. The Friends First program was created to help owners share the experience of unforgettable holidays with family and friends. The program was designed to thank owners for referring their family and friends to WorldMark, and has worked wonders for Jan, Biljana and Liz. 6 The three families booked into WorldMark Kirra Beach for Boxing Day and enjoyed ten days of festive celebration, as a family. The childminding facilities allowed the adults to indulge in the Resort’s wine tasting hour and prolonged periods in the spa and sauna. The barbeque area provided the families with the perfect area for family meals and Jan’s penthouse views became the favourite place for relaxing in the sea breeze. A recommendation from an owner is the highest compliment, so by introducing her cousin to WorldMark Jan received 2,500 Friends First Bonus Holiday Credits, credits which the Siljanovska family will use to upgrade their next holiday. W hen David Pilbrough and his partner Ines Grainger decided to take a break from their busy Christmas schedule, they headed towards the sunshine and the over-indulgent lifestyle of WorldMark Golden Beach on the Sunshine Coast. When not relaxing in their stylish apartment they explored the cosmopolitan sights and sounds of Hastings Street, Noosa with family and marvelled at the mystery and wonder of the picturesque landscape surrounding the coast. A Christmas holiday made even the more memorable when the smiles and laughter were shared among friends and family. “We referred our friends because we thought they would enjoy the WorldMark experience as much as we had”, exclaimed an exhilarated David. David and Ines have already used their Friends First Bonus Holiday Credits towards an ICE South American Cruise set to depart January 2006. d his gh an u o r b Pil inger s Gra David e n I r e partn Our previous winners W4IN Day Gardiner Colin & Jodi day ners of a 14 - the first win enture! To celebrate Christmas in July, the historic WorldMark Ballarat was the perfect setting for murder, mystery and mayhem with Escapades organising a Christmas Mystery. Guests enjoyed a chilling evening of fun, suspense, passion, revenge and lots of laughs. Murder mysteries evenings are fast becoming the preferred alternative for dinner guests with a passion for the unusual. Murder mysteries events are an interactive clue game, where the guests become the main suspects in a murder and must solved the puzzle of who committed the unspeakable crime. Everyone in the game has a motive and the means, but each guest must use their own sleuthing skills to find the real villain. It’s all in good fun and the laughs certainly outnumber the screams. WorldMark owners and guests arrived on the crime scene to be greeted by Santa, pre-dinner canapés and drinks, and the angelic voice of Emma Rix who spellbound suspects with the traditional array of Christmas carols. The event also featured a sumptuous 3-course dinner and an entertaining and interactive atmosphere where strangers were talking and conniving like best friends. Sometimes it is not easy to strike up a conversation at a party, particularly if you do not know anyone. However Alison O’Connor and Andrew Larkins, the MC for the evening, created a relaxed atmosphere that allowed for more intimacy between guests and the opportunity to comfortably talk, blackmail or even to bribe! Having noticed the Escapades Christmas Mystery information in issue two of Destinations South Pacific magazine, Michael Garner and Margrett Oakley jumped at the opportunity to don a period costume and relive the fantasy of an Agatha Christie or Sherlock Holmes novel. Always wanting to uncover the mystery behind a murder and, enjoy a short getaway all at once the Escapades Christmas Mystery was ideal. It provided the chance for them to utilise their unused credits and escape the commotion of Sydney to immerse themselves in the middle of spine-tingling homicide investigation. Terry and Jenny Darke also couldn’t escape the lure of nefarious schemes and spontaneity, and having been owners since 2001 decided it was time to finally experience an Escapades activity. Like Michael and Margrett, this was the first time the Darkes had explored the majestic grandeur of WorldMark Ballarat. The chilly winter climate created the perfect backdrop for cosy evening fireside drinks and strolls around the lake. And after a day of exploring the world-renowned Sovereign Hill, a sauna and spa at the resort became the perfect way to warm up and unwind before the ingenious detective work began. Be sure you look out for the next Murder Escapade in Destinations or on the website, and take pleasure in an evening you will never forget... if you survive, that is! Margrett 8 Oakley at World Mark Ba llarat Ballarat is one of those rare discoveries - a region that combines attractions that appeal to all generations. The charm and heritage of the Ballarat’s gold rush era is mixed with a cosmopolitan and sophisticated lifestyle. Strategically situated in the Central Highlands Region of Victoria, Ballarat is approximately 110km north-west of Melbourne, surrounded by a luxuriant countryside. Ballarat parks and reserves provide an assorted range of activities; all are within easy access of Ballarat. Each location has something exceptional to offer from picnicking, bush walking, bird watching to rock climbing. Ballarat offers impressive heritage streetscapes and historic hotels, boutique shops, art galleries and antique shops. Complementing these is a tantalising array of cafes and restaurants, and an abundance of superb wineries, plus the new thriving arts precinct featuring work by local, national and international artists. Most Ballarat attractions are family friendly, and a must see is Blood on The Southern Cross, Sovereign Hill’s nighttime sound and light spectacular which reenacts the 1854 Eureka uprising. You should also visit the fabulous The Eureka Centre, Ballarat Wildlife Park and Ballarat Bird World. Ballarat is renowned for the worldfamous Begonias Festival in the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. Known as the garden city, visitors are provided with a picturesque landscape of colourful beddings, set amongst a remarkable collection of mature trees and marble statues. Top 5 things you really must do in Ballarat! • Sovereign Hill • Botanical Gardens • Local Wineries • National Parks • Ballarat Fine Art Gallery Heritage listed architecture lines the streets and provides a brilliant example of the country’s finest Victorian streetscape. The grandeur of these majestic buildings is a reminder of the splendour and opulence of a bygone era in Australian culture. A little over an hour’s drive from Melbourne, Ballarat is a banquet of fun, fine food, local wine, shopping and an opportunity to spend time with family and friends all year round. Like many who attend workshops we were surprised to find ourselves owners. In fact during the ‘cooling off period’ we rang with many questions and considered opting out. Having just returned from a truly wonderful month overseas we are totally convinced we did the right thing and are telling all our family and friends to join up. We began our month with a week in New Orleans at the Avenue Plaza Hotel in the Garden District of the city thanks to an exchange with Interval International. It is situated in a lovely area with some great restaurants nearby and the streetcar to the French Quarter stops right outside ready to transport you to all that New Orleans has to offer. We enjoyed paddle-wheel boat trips on the mighty Mississippi River, horse-drawn carriage rides and walking tours through the French Quarter. We did ghost tours, visited plantations from a bygone era, had wonderful evenings of Jazz at the famous Preservation Hall and observed the crazy nightlife that is Bourbon Street. Thanks to ICE we also included eight days on The Jewel of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, which surpassed all our expectations. Visually she is a beautiful ship with the glass Centrum providing a spectacular setting and the opportunity to take in activities as you ride the glass elevators. From the minute you board until the minute you depart you are looked after and can choose to be as active or as lazy as you want. For our 13 year old son the activities run for teenagers allowed him to make lots of friends and to enjoy a freedom no other holiday has ever provided. Meals were a wonderful experience. The food and service was simply without fault and our dinner companions made the whole thing very special and something to be looked forward to every evening. This trip turned into a holiday of a lifetime and one our son claims was the ‘best ever’. Our membership of WorldMark, Interval and ICE made this a very affordable holiday and has left us in no doubt that our ownership has and will in the future repay us with memories that are priceless. We finished off with another week in Orlando this time at Wyndham Palms Resort which allowed us to play golf, revisit favourite rides at Disneyworld and make the most of the resort amenities. Having just returned from a truly wonderful month overseas all using credits we are totally convinced us we did the right thing and telling all our family and friends to join up.
