In the Beginning…
York Catholic’s
First Graduating Class of 1929
Summer 2013
From the Principal
Dear York Catholic Family,
One year ago, I wrote to all of you expressing the honor and privilege it is for me to
be the Principal of our alma mater. Those feelings have remained as I have had the
opportunity to meet more members of the YC family, share in the faith with many of
you, and observe the success of our students. The Class of 2013 is an example of
how a York Catholic education assists in preparing our youth for the future.
Over 71% of our 130 seniors who graduated in May achieved almost 11 million
dollars in scholarship offers and served our community with almost 20,000
community service hours. We are beyond proud of them. We are confident these
young men and women have the skills and abilities to contribute positively to the
greater community.
As our students prepare to start their college and work careers, we have had two faculty members choose to
retire and enjoy more time with their families. Ricki Lilly of the Science Department and Laurie Overmiller of the
Art Department provided YC with over 50 years of combined service teaching our students. We are grateful to
them for their many years of dedicated service.
Jennifer Stees Glassmyer, Director of Institutional Advancement, and I are grateful for everything our community
has done to welcome us in our first year back at York Catholic. Not only have you all affirmed our love for YC
through personal interactions, but your fiduciary support for our school has been generous. Our golf outing at
Regents’ Glen Country Club proved to be the most successful in decades, and our Pot of Gold Drawdown Dinner
saw a dramatic increase in income. Both events were enjoyed by many new and returning faces. We look
forward to celebrating these events again and others in the upcoming year of our 85 th anniversary. The kick-off
event for the year is going to be a wonderful celebration of York Catholic’s history of faith, education, and
service. If you have not reserved your table for September 28 please do so as the seats are reasonably priced
and filling fast. Hopefully, we can have as many decades as possible represented that night for an evening of
reminiscing and entertainment. More details about the Kickoff Event can be found in this issue.
I again thank all of you who have generously supported our school’s programs this past year. Whether it was a
contribution to the general fund, tuition assistance, growth of the endowment, support of the music or athletic
programs, etc., every gift, small or large, allows York Catholic’s tradition of education and service to continue.
As we celebrate our 85th year, we are challenging each of our alumni and friends to donate $85 or more. Please
look for updates throughout the year regarding which group is in the lead.
Sincerely,
Katie Seufert ‘96
Principal

85th Anniversary
A Look Back Through the Years
The First 50 Years
York Catholic High School was founded to serve the Catholic community of the
York Deanery, York County, and nearby areas. Plans for the high school were
implemented in 1927. Originally named St. Mary’s High School, and located on
South George Street in York, the school received full State recognition by
1929 and was renamed York Catholic. Three Sisters of Saint Francis made up
the faculty and on June 11, 1929, three females received their diplomas as
the first graduating class of York Catholic High School.
Athletic teams were introduced in 1931 and have long been an integral part
of York Catholic’s history. The teams were born in humble beginnings:
they wore hand-me-down blue uniforms from Mount Saint Mary’s College.
The original nickname for YC teams was “Dukes.” School historians note that
because of strong anti-Catholic sentiments at the time, many games involved fights
where players had to “put up their dukes,” and numerous games were suspended mid-contest and
never completed because of the brawls.
In 1938, the school uniform was introduced: girls wore jumpers, the boys coats and ties. In 1940, additional space was
needed to accommodate the increased enrollment of 309 and the high school was moved to West King Street.
In 1948, students sang their Alma Mater, “Fondly, We Hail Thee,” for the
first time. Father Fitzpatrick, the principal at the time, composed the
music and Sister Maria Leona, I.H.M. and Sister Catherine Gertrude, S.S.
J., wrote the lyrics. That same year, YC won its first state championship
in boys’ basketball. In the early 50s, the athletic teams’ nickname was
changed to the “Fighting Irish.”
As enrollment continued to grow, it soon became evident that York
Catholic would have to expand even further or build to meet the large
influx of students. In 1954, Catholic authorities purchased land
adjoining Memorial Park as the site for the new high school. Ground
was broken in September of 1957 and the new building was opened to receive
students in September of 1959.
New Building… Same Tradition
Students settled into the new building and focused on the academic regimen that has become a tradition of excellence.
Student fund raising allowed the construction of a school chapel in 1965 and students and faculty now had a dedicated space
for Mass, reflection, and spiritual services.
In 1978, during York Catholic’s Golden Anniversary year, the Fighting Irish boys’ basketball
team won the state championship on St. Patrick’s Day. The following year, they repeated the
title and the girls’ team also won the state championship. This was the first time one school
won both titles in the same year in the history of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic
Association. The cross country team earned state championships in 1983 and 1985. The
boys’ basketball team completed an undefeated season in 1987 with yet another state
championship.
The first issue of “Greensleeves” was printed in 1986 and continues to keep alumni upto-date on their alma mater and their classmates. In 1989, major renovations to parts
of the building provided a new chapel, an art room, an attendance office, a computer
room, and a career/guidance room.
In 1990, the boys’ basketball team won another state championship and the Gaelic Club was established
to recognize major contributors to the school. The Junior High program for grades 7 and 8 began in
September, 1992 and during that school year the building expanded to accommodate a weight room and storage areas. The
football field was created on campus and the library was computerized.
With the turn of the century, many upgrades were made to the building including remodeling the auditorium and lobby,
refurbishing the cafeteria, replacing the windows with energy-saving glass, building a prayer garden dedicated to Our Lady of
Guadalupe, and creating a peaceful prayer grotto dedicated to the Blessed Mother.
The athletic teams continued to win numerous division, league, district, and state championships in multiple sports. The girls’
basketball made state history by winning 8 consecutive District titles and competed in the state championship 7 times since
2006, winning gold in 3 of those trips.
Founded upon the principles of the Catholic philosophy of education, York Catholic continues to nurture academically strong,
faith-filled young men and women ready to fulfill their roles in church and the community. The family continues to grow and
the tradition of excellence endures.

Celebrating
85 Years
Congratulations to Alex
Williams, Class of 2013,
whose artwork was selected
as the logo for York
Catholic’s 85th Anniversary.
Alex’s logo will be seen
throughout the year on
stationery, flyers, and
posters.
Lasting Memories
As York Catholic’s most recent alumni class, the Class of
2013 left behind powerful words when asked
what York Catholic meant to them...
Not once did I feel out of place or unwanted because of a
judgmental student body. Here, groups of friends are based
on likes, dislikes, beliefs, and values; not race, gender, or
social stigmas. I’ve come to value individuality and accept
people for who they are.
~Dee Dee Davis ‘13
I not only received an education at York Catholic, I became
part of a long-term family that I will forever and always be
able to depend on if needed.
~Ciara Wood ‘13
One of the best things I have received at York Catholic is the
deeper knowledge and appreciation I now have for my faith.
I have been taught the moral views of my faith which will
assist me while making decisions in my future.
~Josh Elsen ‘13
I have never walked into a high school that does not have
locks on their lockers. Never once have I worried about
someone stealing something out of my locker or gym bag.
York Catholic is the only high school I know that has frequent
money turn-ins at the office. Coming from public school, it
boggles my mind that the students at York Catholic do not
even think twice about turning in money to the lost and
found.
~Nicole Krevetski ‘13
Religion class helped me to understand there is not a more
powerful force than true kindness and love. I also learned I
must put faith in God and believe He has a plan for there are
many things in life over which I have no control.
~Callum Wallace ‘13
York Catholic gave me roots to an amazing, helpful, and
caring community. With each value and virtue I have gained
here, my future has grown brighter. After my years at York
Catholic, my eyes have been opened to opportunities I have
in the future and things I know I will accomplish. I will carry
the values I learned here with me forever. York Catholic has
given me feathers and I’ve been growing my wings each
year.

TEACHER AND HUMANITARIAN
Señor Milner Sosa, YC Spanish teacher, and his wife, Eileen, coordinated a medical team to travel to Milner’s
homeland of Paraguay in June. Their non-profit group, “OutreachPARAGUAY,” traveled to rural areas of Paraguay and
focused their efforts on the prevention and treatment of respiratory illness. The team was composed of 8 nursing
students and 2 professors from Drexel University, professional staff from Southeast Lancaster Health Services,
including a Physician, 2 Family Nurse Practitioners, a Licensed Practical Nurse, and OutreachPARAGUAY support staff.
They worked directly with school-age children and their families, educators, and community leaders.
LICHTYS GIVE BACK
Junior High Social Studies teacher, Mrs. Pat Lichty, returned to the classroom this past
spring after receiving a double lung transplant. She and her children were featured on
the New York City Triathlon website this summer. Claire Lichty ‘05 and Kevin Lichty ‘07

A Donation Option with Double the Tax Benefits
Despite any market uncertainty of late, many of your investments are likely still worth more today than what you
originally paid for them. And if you sell, you would pay capital gains taxes at a maximum rate of 15%. But by using
appreciated securities you’ve owned for more than one year as a charitable gift, you will receive two tax benefits:


You are entitled to a federal income tax deduction based on the current fair market value of the
securities, regardless of their lower original cost.
You will be exempt from paying capital gains taxes on any increase in value – taxes you would
pay if you were to sell the securities.
And now is a particularly appealing time to give because if you make your gift by December 31, your tax benefits
could be effective on this year’s tax return if you itemize.
How to Make a Gift of Stock
If you have the physical securities:


Hand-deliver them to us; or
Mail us the stocks and stock power separately.
If you don’t have possession of the physical securities:


Instruct your broker to electronically transfer your intended shares; and
Ask your broker to notify us once the transfer is complete.
Case Study: Cash vs. Stock - Which Gets More Bang for Your Buck?
Throughout her working years, Kim saved and invested diligently to prepare for retirement. Now that she is retired,
she is ready to diversify her portfolio and wants to use $100,000 in stock (which she originally purchased for
$10,000, resulting in a $90,000 gain) to fund a gift to York Catholic High School. Take a look at the chart below to
see how Kim will benefit from giving her stock directly to YC as opposed to selling it and donating the proceeds.
