Stress corrosion, which leads to crack formation, is a
more special type of corrosion. It occurs primarily in
high-strength alloys (e.g. AlZnMg alloys) where these
aresubjectedtoprolongedtensilestressinthepresence
ofacorrosivemedium.
ThistypeofcorrosiondoesnotnormallyoccurincommonAlMgSialloys.
Galvaniccorrosion
Galvanic corrosion may occur where there is both metallic contact and an electrolytic bridge between differentmetals.Theleastnoblemetalinthecombinationbecomes the anode and corrodes. The most noble of the
metals becomes the cathode and is protected against
corrosion.Inmostcombinationswithothermetals, aluminum is the least noble metal. Thus, aluminum presentsagreaterriskofgalvaniccorrosionthanmostotherstructuralmaterials. However, theriskislessthanis
generallysupposed.

(25year’suse).Therectangularhollowpro ilewasheld
inplacebyacarbonsteelbolt.Thecontactsurfacesbetween the steel and the aluminum were often wet and
attack was aggravated by wintertime salting. Galvanic
corrosionofaluminumoccurs:

thegalvanizedsteelwill,at irst,preventthealuminum
being attacked. However, this protection disappears

ofthezinc.

Thus,incombinationwithaluminuminaggressiveenvironments,hotdipgalvanizedmaterialshouldbeused.
Preventinggalvaniccorrosion
Theriskofgalvaniccorrosionshouldnotbeexaggerated
– corrosion does not occur in dry, indoor atmospheres
andtheriskisnotgreatinruralatmospheres.
Electricalinsulation
Wheredifferentmetalsareusedincombination, galvanic corrosion can be prevented by electrically insulating
them from each other. The insulation has to break all
contact between the metals. The illustration shows a
solutionforboltjoints.
 Only where there is contact with a more noble metal
(orotherelectronconductorwithahigherchemicalpotentialthanaluminum,e.g.graphite).
 While, at the same time, there is an electrolyte (with
goodconductivity)betweenthemetals.
Galvaniccorrosiondoesnotoccurindry,indooratmospheres.Noristheriskgreatinruralatmospheres.However,theriskofgalvaniccorrosionmustalwaysbetakenintoaccountinenvironmentswithhighchloridelevels, e.g. areas bordering the sea. Copper, carbon steel

Crevicecorrosion
Crevicecorrosioncanoccurinnarrow,liquid- illedcrevices.Thelikelihoodofthistypeofcorrosionoccurringin
extruded pro iles is small. However, signi icant crevice
corrosion can occur in marine atmospheres, or on the
exteriorsofvehicles.Duringtransportandstorage, watersometimescollectsinthecrevicesbetweensuperjacent aluminum surfaces and leads to super icial corrosion(“waterstaining”).
