The skills and knowledge imbibed while working with the community are of immense use in future areas of work and increases their social connectivity. The following four community service projects were taken up from January to March’2013 in the local area by the students of the college. The students conducted street plays, awareness marches, door to door campaigns, collaborated with teachers of local schools and nutritionists to carry out these activities. MID DAY MEALS The students of the college went to Chetram Kanya Girls Inter College, Sadarpur with the main objective to ascertain the nutritional and health status of school children, who consumed mid day meals. It was found that the school provided hot cooked nutritional meals to the primary and upper primary classes, especially to the girls of the weaker disadvantaged sections of the society. To encourage the girls to attend the school more regularly and help them focus on their studies. The learners of the college went to the neighboring areas to motivate the people to send their girls to the school. This project helped increase the attendance, especially of girls in the above school. SAY NO TO ALCHOL The project was carried in the local area. As the area is a village so males of the family are persistent alcohol takers. To motivate them to abstain from alcohol, street plays were organized showing the ill effects of alcohol. This was followed by a door to door campaign to further strengthen the desired message. SAY NO TO POLYTHENE BAGS The college is located in the village, its drains are choked with polythene and during the monsoon these drains are clogged and the roads are water logged. The open spaces outside the village are cluttered with discarded polythene bags. To create awareness about the harmful effects of polythene bags on the environment, students of the college staged street play showing that the land gets littered by plastic bag and garbage, apart from making the surroundings ugly, increases ground pollution, causes rampant infection due to poor hygienic and sanitary conditions. The "Throw away culture" results in these bags finding their way in to the drainage system This littering reduces rate of rain water percolating, resulting in lowering of already low water levels in our cities. The soil fertility deteriorates as the plastic bags remains in the soil for years and poisons the soil and ground water and entering the human food chain causing disastrous effect on our health. The faculty members Ms Subhanshi Purwar and Ms Priyanka organized a workshop to teach the students to make paper bags. These paper bags were distributed in the locality, especially to the shops. The project was a success. CONSERVATION OF ENERGY The students of the college created awareness in the locality as to judicious use of energy such as LPG, petrol, diesel and electricity, as all these fuels are from non renewable resources and hence are limited. The consumption of these fuels increases the carbon footprint, causing further deterioration in our environment. The students carried out campaigns to sensitized the locals to energy / fuel saving tips while cooking, driving and in use of electricity. The B. Ed.
